SALMONS, UNA M., was born May 11, 1914 in Buffalo, MO the daughter of Joseph Leroy and Minnie Belle (Cowgill) Hendrickson. She married Tom Salmons June 24, 1933 in Springfield, MO. He preceded her in death November 8, 1977. Una worked for a variety of employers but by far her most satisfying work was with Sartori Memorial Hospital. She died Tuesday, December 8, 1998 in Stockton, MO at the age of 84 years following a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease.
Una is survived by her three children and their spouses, Roger & Utae Salmons of El Paso, TX, Darrell & Shirley Salmons of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Donna & Joe Brody of Fair Play, MO; fourteen grandchildren, Stephen & Debbie Brody, Spencer Brody, Lori Brody, Sterling & Jackie Brody, Stacey Brody, Stewart & Alicia Brody, Jizel & Joe Palmer, Velvet & Monty Marshall, Una Lisa Salmons, Toni Salmons, Jolene Salmons, Dean & Lisa Salmons, Scott & Tonia Salmons, and Eric & Tammy Salmons, nineteen great grandchildren, and her sister, Betty Jean Miles and her husband, Harvey. Una was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two brothers, Hubert Rollin Hendrickson and William Henry Hendrickson.
Funeral Services were 1:30 p.m. Monday, December 14, 1998 at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home with burial in Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association.
SAMEC, MARLENE G. was born February 23, 1943 in Maple Leaf, Iowa the daughter of Albert and Leona (Lauck) Arndt. She married Virgil Samec June 28, 1961 in Maple Leaf, Iowa. Marlene died Friday, December 15, 2000 in Waterloo, Iowa at the age of 57 years.
Survivors include her husband, Virgil Samec, of Cedar Falls, Iowa; three sons, Roger Samec and his wife, Teresa, of Waterloo, David Samec of Cedar Falls, and Dean Samec and his wife, Rebecca, of Cedar Falls; six grandchildren, Carlie, Jesse Lucas, Morgan, Mitchell, and Drew; and her brother, Ronald Arndt of Cedar Falls. Marlene was preceded in death by her parents.
Memorial services were 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 19, 2000 at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the family.
SAMPSON, DONALD T. SR. was born November 19, 1901 in Hamilton, Missouri, the son of William Chapman and Addie Marion (Wright) Sampson. He married Amanda M. Stromer on January 3, 1923 in Waterloo, Iowa. She preceded him death on August 17, 1996. Donald was employed at Hedford Foundry in Waterloo for over 20 years; Viking Pump Company in Cedar Falls for many years; and retired with Roskamp Manufacturing after 25 years of employment. He died Thursday, October 28, 1999, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, at 97 years of age.
Donald is survived by his children, William Sampson of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Carol Kelley of Cedar Falls; nineteen grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife and parents; two sons, Donald Sampson, Jr. and Virgil Sampson; a granddaughter, Virginia Sampson; three brothers, Edmond, Harold and Richard; and a sister, Georgia.
Funeral services were 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 2, 1999, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with burial at Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Memorials may be directed to the family.
SANKEY, INUS M. was born April 21, 1934 in Decorah, Iowa the daughter of Walter and Marie (Lang) Van Brocklin. She married George W. Sankey May 20, 1951 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Inus held numerous positions in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls area as well as being a full time homemaker. She died Thursday, November 16, 2000 at her home at the age of 66 years.
Survivors include her husband, George; one daughter, Debra Berry and her husband, David, of Omaha; four sons, Gary Sankey and his wife, Sue, of Cedar Falls, George Sankey and his wife, Jackie, of Omaha, Gordon Sankey of Cedar Falls, and Galen Sankey of Omaha, sixteen grandchildren, seven great grandchildren; two brothers, Jack Van Brocklin of Oelwein and Lester Van Brocklin of Raymond; and five sisters, Margaret Kauten of Independence, Deloris Teepe of Dunkerton, Helen Teepe of Linn Grove, Patricia Brown of Raymond and Donna Brown of Jesup. Inus was preceded in death by her parents, twin granddaughters, two sisters, Darlene Westcott and Dorothy Van Brocklin, and one brother, Donald Van Brocklin.

SANTEE, LUELLA SADIE, was born October 30, 1904 in Rock Valley, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Emma (Wattawa) Bauman. She married Leslie C. Santee, he preceded her in death February 12, 1977. Luella was a teacher for many years with the Dike Community School District in Dike, Iowa. She died Monday, December 28, 1998 at Heather Manor in Des Moines, Iowa at 94 years of age.
Luella is survived by her three nephews, Robert Vail of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Donald Vail of Clarkston, Washington and Richard Vail of Sand Point, Idaho. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a daughter, Marianna Strever.
Graveside Commital Services were held at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 6 at Fairview Cemetery in Cedar Falls. There was no visitation, her body was cremated.
SASSAMAN, PAUL G. was born March 31, 1914 in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Ralph George and Martha (Hackbarth) Sassaman. He married Mary Iona Coen on February 15, 1939 in Powersville, Iowa. She preceded him in death on July 7, 1996. Paul was a machinist and elevator operator at John Deere & Company in Waterloo, Iowa for many years. He died Sunday, September 1, 2002, at Westview Manor Healthcare Center in Sun City, Arizona, at 88 years of age.
Paul is survived by his children, Marti Hazen of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Judy (Larry) Bosley of Glendale, Arizona, Nancy (Larry) Mowatt of Wickenburg, Arizona and Ted Sassaman of Waterloo; sixteen grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, three step great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife and parents; twin daughters, Mary Mina and Catherine Florence Sassaman in infancy; three brothers, Robert, Keith and Ralph Sassaman and a sister, Eveline Sassaman in infancy.
Funeral services were 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 6, 2002, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, Cedar Falls, with burial at Washington Chapel Cemetery in rural Cedar Falls. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
SASSAMAN, RALPH was born on August 21, 1916, at Waterloo, Iowa the son of Ralph and Martha (Hackbarth) Sassaman. He married Elner M. Foote on March 28, 1938, at the Church of the Nazarene in Waterloo, Iowa. Ralph worked at Viking Pump and Hinson’s Manufacturing for many years. He died on Friday, July 23, 1999 at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa at 82 years of age.
Ralph is survived by his wife, Elner of Cedar Falls; one son James E. Sassaman and his wife Julie of Cedar Falls; four daughters, Carol E. Schirm and her husband Dick of Waterloo, Karen J. Meyer and her husband LuRay of Wellsburg, Iowa, Helen M. Bosley and her husband Herb of Cedar Falls and Liz R. Gardner and her husband Dan of Rowley, Iowa; fifteen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and one brother, Paul G. Sassaman of Glendale, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Keith A. Sassaman.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 27, 1999 at First Church of the Nazarene, Cedar Falls, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery in Waterloo. Memorials may be directed to the church.
SCHAFER, MERNAL IRENE, 88, of Cedar Falls, died Thursday, July 17, at Maple Manor Care Center, Aplington, Iowa. She was born September 24, 1914, in Grundy Center, Iowa the daughter of Morris and Savannah (Lynch) Pierce. She married Marvin C. Schafer on June 22, 1935, in Grundy Center. He preceded her in death on February 22, 1998.
Survivors include two sons, Marvin Charles (Marcella) of New Hartford and Michael Jon (Petra) of Sunnyvale, California; a daughter, Dee Ann Christensen of Coon Rapids Minnesota.; 9 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and a great great granddaughter; and two sisters, Mary Viet of Hudson and Bernice Saathoff of Tucson, Arizona. Mernal was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and four grandchildren.
Services were 10 a.m. Monday, July 21, 2003 at Valley View Baptist Church, with burial in Fairview Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Memorials may be directed to the church.
SCHARDT, ESTHER E. , 90, of Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque, Iowa and formerly of Cedar Falls, died Sunday, March 30, 2003, in Dubuque. She was born July 2, 1912 in Belmond, Iowa, the daughter of Rev. W. E. F. and Marie (Friesleben) Meier. She married the Rev. Adolph G. Schardt on July 16, 1933 in Manson, Iowa. Esther graduated from Manson High School and was an alumnus of Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. She and Adolph moved to Cedar Falls in 1944 when Adolph took the position as pastor of St. John Lutheran Church. Esther was a musician, served various charities and was employed by the Cedar Falls School System.
Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn (Rev. Andrew) Oppedahl of Dubuque; a son, Joel Schardt of Minneapolis, Minnesota; five grandchildren, Mark Oppedahl of Dubuque, Nathan Oppedahl of Minneapolis, Paul (Natalie) Leske Oppedahl of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Beth Chaplin of Dubuque and Paul Fisher of Palm Springs, California; three great-grandchildren and a son-in-law, Rev. Donald Fisher of Dana Point, California. Esther was preceded in death by her husband and parents; a daughter, Lucia Fisher and a sister, Magdalene Meier.
Funeral services were 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 3 at Nazareth Lutheran Church, with burial at Fairview Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. A memorial fund will be established.
SCHATZBERG, OTIS CHRIS 92, of rural Shell Rock died Saturday, May 15, 2004 at his home. He was born October 20, 1911 near Swanton, Butler County, Iowa the son of Chris & Hattie (Van Hauen) Schatzberg. He married Alice Christoffersen November 15, 1937 at Northwood, Iowa. Otis farmed his entire life, first at Riceville, Iowa and then at his farm in rural Shell Rock, Iowa until his retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Schatzberg; two sons, Gary (Patty) Schatzberg of Cedar Falls, Dale (Dorothy) Schatzberg of Janesville; six grandchildren, Kevin (Amber) Schatzberg of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Brian (Kelly) Schatzberg of St. Charles, Missouri, Todd (Michele) Schatzberg of West Des Moines, Iowa, Terri (Randy) Thomsen and Anne (Steve) Wilkins, all of Waverly, Iowa, and Nick Jones of Cedar Falls; thirteen great grandchildren, and one sister, Edna Lampman of Janesville.
Otis was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and Walter “Bud” Schatzberg; and two sisters, Alida Henry and Alice Meier.
Services were 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at Finchford Community Bible Church in Finchford with burial at Finchford Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the church or Cedar Valley Hospice.
SCHERRMAN, JAMES E. "JIM" was born February 6, 1928 in Farley, Iowa, the son of Frank X. and Philomena (Kelly) Scherrman. Jim served with the U.S. Navy during W.W. II. He received his B.S. degree from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1948. He owned and operated Scherrman Motor Company from 1948-1958. Jim was Vice President of Midwest Limestone Company in Gilmore City, Iowa until 1983, when he purchased the Pocahontas & Laurens Ready Mix plants, where he retired in 1988. He is a Past Director of the Iowa Automobile Association, a Past Commander in the American Legion, a charter member of the American Association of Accountants, past financial secretary of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and was secretary of the Cedar Falls Rotary International Club. Jim died Monday, July 16, 2001, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa, at 73 years of age.
He is survived by his wife Kay, of Cedar Falls, Iowa; three daughters, Sandra Scherrman of Denver, Colorado, Sally Brent (Rick) of Loveland, Colorado and Chris Jackson (Dave) of Cedar Falls; five grandchildren, Chad Brent, Danielle Polansky, Alysia Brent, and Shannon and Lindsay Jackson; three great-grandchildren, Madison and Camryn Polansky, and Ashlyn Brent, and two brothers, William Scherrman of Dyersville and Emmett Scherrman of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Kathy Scherrman and a sister, Mary Catherine Benedict.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 19, 2001, at St. Patrick Catholic Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. A memorial fund will be established.
SCHMIDT, JEANNE E., was born December 28, 1920 in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Jens Peter and Karen (Hansen) Jensen. She married Hilmer J. Schmidt on January 24, 1943 in Waterloo. He preceded her in death on December 3, 1986. Jeanne was a Registered Nurse, graduating from Allen School of Nursing in 1974. She worked as a Nursing Supervisor at Sartori Memorial Hospital and the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home, retiring in 1992. Jeanne was a volunteer at the Sartori Hospital Auxiliary, the Cedar Falls Public Library, IPTV and the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home. She was an avid quilter for the Lutheran World Relief. Jeanne died Monday, July 24, 2000 at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, Iowa, at 79 years of age.
She is survived by three sons, Robert W. Schmidt of Anchorage, Alaska, Richard Schmidt of O’Fallon, Illinois and Jeffrey C. Schmidt of Cedar Falls; two daughters, Nancy Zetlmaier of Vancouver, Washington and Kristi Schaefer of Oregon City, Oregon; six grandchildren, Robert H. Schmidt, Jonathon P. Zetlmaier, David W. Zetlmaier, Kylie Schmidt, Jessica Schmidt and Stephanie Schmidt, and one brother, James P. Jensen of Carroll, Iowa. Jeanne was preceded in death by her husband, parents and one sister, Katherine Borchardt.

SCHMITZ, ROBERT JOSEPH was born April 20, 1923 in Eagle Center, IA, the son of Henry J. and Agnes M. (Beck) Schmitz. He attended Sacred Heart Grade and High School in Waterloo, IA. Robert joined the U.S. Navy in 1940 and served in the European Theatre of Operations until 1946. He married Arlene Doris Saaksmeier, on June 26, 1948 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waterloo. Robert was employed at John Deere & Company in Waterloo for many years. Later, he and Arlene lived in Watertown, NY, McKeesport, PA and Cherry Hill, NJ, where they retired in 1975. They moved to Plano, TX in 1984 to be closer to their grandchildren. Robert was a member in the National Clock Association and enjoyed antique clocks. He was the current ship historian for the U.S.S. Savannah, a ship on which he served in WW II. Robert died Monday, October 1, 2001 at Presbyterian Hospital in Plano, TX, at 78 years of age.
He is survived by his wife Arlene, of Plano, TX; his children, Helen Marie Schmitz of Cherry Hill, NJ and Steven Joseph Schmitz (Lesley) of Bedford, TX; three grandchildren, Jamie, Scott and Stephanie Schmitz, all of Bedford, TX; three sisters, Margaret Greiner of Grundy Center, IA, Sr. Frances Elizabeth Schmitz of Chippewa Falls, WI and Clare Staebell (Paul) of Waterloo, and a brother, Loren Schmitz (Marie) of LaMesa, CA. Robert was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Elaine Schmitz.
Services were 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 4, 2001 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Falls. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Hubbard Cemetery in Hubbard, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to Sacred Heart Catholic School Foundations, 620 W. Fifth St., Waterloo, Iowa 50702.
SCHOEMAN, PAUL was born March 22, 1939 in Cedar Falls, Iowa the son of Vernon and Eunice (Johnston) Schoeman. He married Audrey Naber June 12, 1959 in Cedar Falls. Paul attended Iowa State University then actively farmed until 1983 when he went into the drainage tile business. He was the current president of the New Hartford Lions Club. Paul died Wednesday, August 23, 2000 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa at the age of 61 years.
Survivors include his wife, Audrey of New Hartford, Iowa; one son, Steve Schoeman and his wife, Kendra, of Leawood, Kansas; one daughter, Julie Schoeman of Cedar Falls; two granddaughters, Regan and Erica Schoeman; his mother, Eunice of Cedar Falls; two brothers, David Schoeman of Denver, Colorado and Bruce Schoeman of Willmar, Minnesota; and one sister, Marilyn Dow of Seattle, Washington.Paul was preceded in death by his father.
A Celebration of Life was held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, August 26, 2000 at First Presbyterian Church, Cedar Falls, with burial in Hillcrest Cemetery, rural Cedar Falls. A memorial fund will be established.
SCHRAGE, LAVONA J. was born March 4, 1923 at Clarksville, Iowa, the daughter of Charles Walter and Mabel Emo (Alder) Greene. She married John Joel Cummings in 1939, they later divorced. LaVona married Lee Ernest Schrage in 1958, they later divorced. She was a graduate of the Waterloo Community School District and enjoyed travelling and attending parties with her friends throughout her life. LaVona died Monday, February 22, 1999 at her home in Waterloo, Iowa at 75 years of age.
She is survived by her two daughters, Annette Dietz of SanDiego, California and Pat Overkamp of Cedar Falls, Iowa; her five sons, Jonathon and Randall Cummings, both of Peoria, Illinois, and Charles, Dennis and Dale Schrage, all of Parkersburg, Iowa; fifteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; her sister, Esther Stephens and her brother, John Greene, both of Waterloo and her two former husbands. LaVona was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Virginia Greene.
Funeral services were 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 27, 1999 at the funeral home with burial at 2:00 p.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery in Waterloo, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the family or the American Lung Association of Iowa.
