SLAUGHTER, DALE LESTER, JR., was born October 15, 1922 in Jesup, Iowa the son of Dale L. Slaughter Sr. and Eunice (Cook) Slaughter. He married Lois Singleton December 18, 1942 at Waterloo, Iowa. Dale was a machinist at John Deere retiring in 1985 after 44 years of service. He died Wednesday, October 6, 1999 at his home at the age of 76 years.
Survivors include his wife, Lois Slaughter of Cedar Falls, Iowa; two sons, Jeffrey Slaughter and his wife, Jen, of Union, Iowa, John Slaughter and his wife, Laura, of Montgomery, Illinois; three daughters, Linda Moore of Waterloo, Iowa, Mary Slaughter of Cedar Falls, and Caroline Slaughter of Waterloo; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Dale was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Dale R. Slaughter, and one brother, Lee Slaughter.
A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 8, 1999 at St. John Lutheran Church with private family inurnment in Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the church or Cedar Valley Hospice.
SMITH, ALICE M. was born March 21, 1920 at Grundy Center, Iowa, the daughter of Owen Earl and Ethel M. (Meyers) Wagoner. She married Donald J. Kiewiet in March of 1939. He preceded her in death on September 6, 1972. Alice married Edgar N. Smith in January of 1983 in Cedar Falls. She was a self-employed Home Decorator for over 40 years. Alice died Friday, March 2, 2001, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo, Iowa, at 80 years of age.
She is survived by her husband Edgar, of Cedar Falls; three sons, Ronald Kiewiet of Waterloo, Craig Kiewiet and Kurt Kiewiet, both of Cedar Falls; three step-daughters, Linda Janssen and Nancy Kelley, both of Cedar Falls and Janet Rasmussen of Waterloo; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, and one sister, Blanche Weberg of Riderwood, Washington. Alice was preceded in death by her first husband and her parents; one sister, Ruth Hawn, and two brothers, Lloyd and Ralph Wagoner.
Memorial services were 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2001 at First United Methodist Church in Cedar Falls. Private intermenty will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the church or the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo, Iowa.
SMITH, GLADYS N. was born February 17, 1920 in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the daughter of Robert and Susan (Huffer) Kiefer. She was a graduate of Cedar Falls High School and married Harry M. Smith on August 29, 1941 in Nashua, Iowa. He preceded her in death on October 31, 1998. Gladys died Thursday, October 4, 2001 at her home in Cedar Falls, at 81 years of age.
Survivors include two sons, Ron Smith of Cedar Falls, and Wesley Smith and his wife, Pat, of Hudson, Iowa, and a brother, George Kiefer of Murrieta, California. Gladys was preceded in death by her husband and parents; four brothers, Bill, Ernie, Lloyd and Earl Kiefer, and three sisters, Helen Kiefer, Clara Wittler and Marie Hathaway.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 8, 2001 at Bethel Presbyterian Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, both in Waterloo. A Memorial Fund will be established.
SMITH, MARY RUTH BABCOCK, was born March 26, 1921in Amherst, South Dakota, the daughter of Ray Porter and Anna Frances (Curr) Babcock. She married M. B. Smith on November 24, 1943 in Watertown, South Dakota. Mary was a graduate of Northern State Teacher's College in Aberdeen, South Dakota. She taught school in Brown County, South Dakota; was a machine bookkeeper in Los Angeles, California; and designed homes and worked at the public library after moving to Cedar Falls, Iowa. Mary died Friday, September 17, 1999, at Windsor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Cedar Falls, at 78 years of age. She is survived by her husband of Cedar Falls. Mary was preceded in death by her parents.

SMITH, AVA MAURINE was born on March 20, 1906 in Plainfield, Iowa the daughter of Fred and Carrie (Robinson) Bossom. She married Lyle Smith on October 12, 1924 in Waverly, Iowa. He died on August 26, 1990. Ava died on Friday, October 29, 1999 at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home at 93 years of age.
She is survived by two sons, Larry of Vorhees, Iowa and Robert of New Hartford, Iowa; tow daughters, Donna Johnson of Waverly, Iowa and Darlyce Drum of Dike, Iowa; a daughter in law, Marge of Fruita, Colorado; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren and her sister, Elna Beard of Plainfield, Iowa. Ava was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two sons, Lyle Jr. and Burdette Smith; three sisters, Ruby Eveland, Hazel Snyder and Ruth Cagley and four brothers, Howard, Leslie, Kenneth and James Bossom.
Funeral services were 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 2, 1999 at First Baptist Church in Cedar Falls with burial at 2:00 p.m. in Willow Lawn Cemetery in Plainfield, Iowa. Memorials to the Church.
SMITH, DOROTHY V. , 86, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, died Monday, September 15, 2003, at the Western Home Communities Elizabeth Martin Health Center in Cedar Falls. She was born July 9, 1917 in Plainfield, Iowa, the daughter of Roland and Jessie (Richards) Shadbolt. Dorothy attended Horton Country School near Horton, Iowa. She married Carl L. Smith on July 13, 1941 in Parkersburg, Iowa. He preceded her in death on May 11, 1964. Dorothy was a cook for 25 years in the Dietary Department at Sartori Memorial Hospital and was a member of First Baptist Church in Cedar Falls.
She is survived by her two daughters, Norma (Vagn) Pedersen of Cedar Falls and Nancy (Joe) Johnson of Charles City, Iowa; six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marjorie Stufflebeam of Orlando, Florida. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband and parents; a sister, Charlette Richmond; and two brothers, Donald and Raymond Shadbolt.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 19, 2003, at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home with burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family.
SMITH, LAVELLE C. was born April 10, 1910 in Waterloo, Iowa the third daughter of Oliver and Pearl (Flickinger) Smith. LaVelle was raised in a Christian Home and on July 8, 1924, at the age of 14, accepted Christ as her personal Savior. LaVelle was united in marriage to Clifford J. Smith on June 13, 1933 in Waterloo. As a young lady she worked at Black’s Department Store. Most of her married life, LaVelle was a homemaker and full time mother. LaVelle died Sunday, August 3, 2003 at Peoples Long Term Care in Independence, Iowa at the age of 93 years.
Survivors include her two daughters, Nancy (Mrs. Richard Orr) of Independence, Iowa and Judy (Mrs. Rod Kampman) of Baxter, Iowa; six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren; and one sister, Vivian (Mrs. Lowell Korfe) of Carlsbad, California. LaVelle was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two sisters, Ruth Hauser and husband Milt, Helene Luhm and husband Ezra.
Funeral services were 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 6, 2003 at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home in Cedar Falls, Iowa with burial in Orange Township Cemetery in Waterloo. A memorial fund will be established.
SMITH, MILDRED P. was born August 28, 1909 in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Pearl (Bickner) Mathes. She married Rex Smith on August 21, 1945 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He preceded her in death in August of 1973. Mildred worked in the laundry department at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls for many years, retiring in 1972. She died on Monday, September 21, 1998 at the Western Home in Cedar Falls at 89 years of age.
Mildred is survived by her two sisters, Esther Cook of Cedar Falls and Phyllis Beaumont of Waterloo, Iowa, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and her sister, Frances V. Sorensen.
Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m.Wednesday, September 23, 1998 at the Western Home Chapel with burial at Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Memorials may be directed to the Western Home or Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls.
SMITH, RICHARD WAITE "DICK", was born November 23, 1922, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the son of John Lester and Esther (Waite) Smith. He was a 1940 graduate of Cedar Falls High School and attended Iowa State Teachers College, now UNI. Dick served with the U.S. Army Air Corps as a left gunner, on a B-29 in the 73rd Bomb wing on Saipan, during W.W. II. He married Marilyn Hoffer on July 31, 1943 at Chanute Field, Rantoul, Illinois. Dick received his Industrial Engineering degree in 1949 from Iowa State College, now Iowa State University. He was manager of the Manufacturing Engineering Dept. with the Viking Pump Company in Cedar Falls, retiring in 1985 after 37 years of service. Dick died Saturday, November 11, at the Cedar Falls Western Home.
Dick served on several committees, including the Waterloo Technical Society. He was chairman of the Central Iowa Section of the Mechanical Engineering Society, and was chairman of the Industrial Development Committee of the Cedar Falls Chamber of Commerce. Dick served as the chairman of the AMVETS Board and was a member of the Lions Club. He was a founding member of “The Saints” Dixieland Band, and was co-founder of the Sturgis Falls Dixieland Jazz Festival, managing it for 11 years. Dick served for more than 20 years with the St. Vincent de Paul Society with St. Patrick Catholic Church, and was a former Sertoma Man of the Year.
He is survived by his wife Marilyn, of Cedar Falls; two sons, Michael John Smith and his wife Kerstine of Sartell, Minnesota, and David Waite Smith and his wife Dawn of Allison, Iowa; a daughter, Lore Ann Mick and her husband Jeffrey of Waverly, Iowa; nine grandchildren and a sister, E. Jean Finnell and her husband Marvin of Pueblo, Colorado. Dick was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services were 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 15, 2000, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with burial at Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Military committal rites were conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or St. Patrick Catholic Church.
SMITH, RONALD E. , 71, of Waterloo, Iowa, died at home on Wednesday, March 10, 2004. He was born November 26, 1932 , at Jesup, Iowa, the son of Ira and Elsie Maude (Cummings) Smith. Ronald married Judith I. Smith June 11, 1954, at the United Presbyterian Church, Barclay Township. They were later divorced. Ronald served in the United states Air Force from January 18, 1957 to March 18, 1963. He worked for Roger Smith Construction, Cedar Falls, Iowa. Ronald died Wednesday, March 10, 2004, at his home in Waterloo, Iowa at the age of 71 years.
Ronald is survived by three son; Rod (Lori) Smith of Waterloo, Roger (Darla) Smith of Janesville, Iowa and Robert (Teresa) Smith of Webster City, Iowa; two daughters, Roxanne (Leonard) Thompson of Janesville and Robben (Jim) Wilson of Waterloo, Iowa: sixteen grand children and nine great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Bud Smith and one sister, Vivian Nissen.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 13, 2004, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home in Cedar Falls. A memorial fund will be established.
SNYDER, WANDA J., 67, of Dumont and formerly of Cedar Falls, died Thursday, March 16, 2000 in Weslaco, Texas of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was born January 4, 1933 in Grundy Center, Iowa, the daughter of Wilford and Mae (Mast) Bienfang. Wanda married Robert G. “Bob” Snyder on July 20, 1957 in Waterloo, Iowa. She was a graduate of Orange Township High School and attended Iowa State Teachers College (UNI). Wanda worked as a Nurse’s Aide for twenty years at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home, retiring in 1997.
She is survived by her four sons, Kevin Snyder and his wife Jeannie of Bristow, Iowa, Curt Snyder and his wife Debbie of Spencer, Iowa, Darol Snyder and his wife Lynn of Calamus, Iowa and Matt Snyder of Keota, Iowa; her two daughters, Kathie Austin and her husband Chris of Lenexa, Kansas and Joyce Snyder and her friend Mark Hartman of Overland Park, Kansas; five grandchildren, Jeremiah, Eric, Cory, Miranda and Darci Snyder; six brothers, George Bienfang of Minnesota, Harold Bienfang of Jesup, Iowa, Kenneth Bienfang of Washburn, Iowa, Wilbur Bienfang of Texas, Elvern Bienfang of Robbinsdale, Minnesota and Arlon Bienfang of Waterloo, Iowa; and a sister, Evelyn Gray of Independence, Iowa. Wanda was preceded in death by her husband and parents, and a sister, Marcella Bienfang.
Services were 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at First Reformed Church, Bristow, Iowa, with burial at Rose Hill Cemetery, Grundy Center at 1:30 p.m. Memorials may be given to the American Red Cross or Cedar Valley Hospice.
SOLES, VIOLETTE M. was born August 16, 1905, in Fern, Iowa, the daughter of Byron and Theresa (Juel) Soles. She was a graduate of Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) and was a teacher for many years in Wellsburg and Decorah, Iowa. Violette died Thursday, April 27, 2000, at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home, at 94 years of age.
She is survived by her sister, Thora Peel of Galesburg, Illinois, and her two nephews, Jack Peel and his wife Regina of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Roger Peel and his wife Rebecca of Denver, Colorado. Violette was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Vera B. Soles.

SORENSEN, AXEL NORMAN was born May 17, 1917 in Grundy County, Iowa the son of Soren Peter & Anna Dorothea (Nielsen) Sorensen. He married Myrtle Nielsen June 29, 1944 at Fredsville Lutheran Church, rural Cedar Falls. Myrtle died November 8, 1994. Norman and Myrtle farmed for over 50 years in the Cedar Falls area and they also operated the Janesville Tap for 11 years. Norman died Monday, February 24, 2003 at Tucson Medical Center Hospice in Tucson, Arizona at the age of 85 years.
Survivors include four sons, Dean (Margaret) Sorensen of Cedar Falls, Dale (Pat) Sorensen of Tucson, Merle (Shelly) Sorensen of Janesville and Marvin Sorensen of Benson, Arizona; nine grandchildren, Matt, Aimee, Nathan, Kirsten, Katie, Shane, Shareen, Dana and Andrew; four great grandchildren, Megan, Kameron, Jonathan and Teddy; and two brothers, Gordon (Eva) Sorensen of Oklahoma City, Okalahoma and Hans Sorensen of Raymond, Iowa. Norman was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one grandson, and one brother, Raymond Sorensen.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 28, 2003 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Janesville with burial in Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens in Cedar Falls. Memorials may be given to the church or the Cedar Falls Senior Center.
SORENSON, MARGARET M. was born November 20, 1915 at Emmetsburg, Iowa, the daughter of Leman F. and Margaret (Roux) Place. She attended country school in Freedom Township, Palo Alto County, Iowa and graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1933. She received two years of normal training during high school, and then taught in the rural schools of Palo Alto county, for seven years. She married Walton J. Sorenson on February 27, 1941 at Emmetsburg, Iowa. They farmed for forty years in the Graettinger-Ringsted area, retiring in November of 1980. Margaret died Monday, December 8, 2003 at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home, at the age of 88 years.
Margaret is survived by one son, John (Carol) Sorenson of Waterloo, Iowa; two daughters, Mary (Doug) Glasnapp of Lawrence, Kansas and Carol Sorenson of Pleasant Hill, Iowa; four grandchildren, James and Jason Glasnapp & Michael and Rachel Sorenson; two sisters, Charlotte (Dick) Frink of Carmichael, California and Louise (Gene) Petty of Signal Mt., Tennessee and two brothers, Clifford Place of San Francisco, California and Harlan (Dorothy) Place of Emmetsburg, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and four brothers, Melvin, Clarence, Robert, and Gilbert Place.
Funeral services were 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 11, 2003, at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home Chapel. Interment was 10:00 a.m. Friday at Evergreen Cemetery in Emmetsburg, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Falls Lutheran Home or Cedar Valley Hospice.
SORENSON, WALTON J. was born October 23, 1915 at Evan, Minnesota, the son of John and Lena (Dalluge) Sorenson. He married Margaret Place February 27, 1941 at Emmetsburg, Iowa. He attended elementary and high school in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. Before his retirement he farmed in the Graettinger-Ringsted area. Walton died Monday, September 23, 2002 at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home at the age of 86 years.
Walton is survived by his wife, Margaret of Cedar Falls; one son John (Carol) Sorenson of Waterloo; two daughters, Mary (Doug) Glasnapp, Lawrence, Kansas and Carol Sorenson, Pleasant Hill, Iowa; four grandchildren, James and Jason Glasnapp, Michael and Rachel Sorenson; five sisters, Phyllis Knudson and Betty Highdale both of Battle Lake, Minnesota, Shirley Wilson, Orange, California, Kay Donna Phillips, Yucca Valley California and DeLoris Kelley, Santa Anna, California. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Lavern Sorenson and one sister, Ivadell Chapman.
Funeral services were 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home Chapel with visitation for an hour before service time at the Lutheran Home. Further visitation was held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Martin Matice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg, Iowa with a Graveside service at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Evergreen Cemetery in Emmetsburg. Memorials may be directed to the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home.
