INDEPENDENCE -- Stuart D. Briggs, 56, of rural Independence, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at Peoples Memorial Long Term Care Center, Independence, of natural causes; services pending with White Funeral Home, Independence, (319) 334-2595.

CHESTER -- Lori Jean McKenna Livingston, 29, of Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, formerly of Chester, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, at Fort Walton Medical Center, Fort Walton Beach, Fla., from complications of a brain aneurysm suffered Nov. 29; survivors include her husband, Joseph; a son, Brandon; a daughter, Nicole; her parents, Glen and Bonnie McKenna of Chester; two brothers, John of Chester and Jason of Frost, Minn.; paternal grandparents, Floyd and Lillian McKenna of Osage; and her maternal grandmother, Iola Harrington of Grand Meadow, Minn.; she was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Everett Harrington; services were Dec. 19 at Eglin Air Force Base; memorial services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Evangelical Lutheran Church, LeRoy, Minn.; McLaughlin Mortuary, Fort Walton Beach, was in charge of arrangements; Mrs. Livingston graduated in 1988 from Riceville Community High School, and served with the U.S. Air Force at Sawyer Air Force Base in Michigan and Misawa Air Force Base in Japan as a computer specialist; she worked as a free-lance computer consultant after the birth of her children.

HAMPTON -- Todd Michael Porter,33, of Mason City, formerly of Hampton, died Friday, Dec. 18, 1998, at home of natural causes; survivors include his mother, Sheila Porter of Evansdale; and a sister, Tami Tomkins of Waterloo; he was preceded in death by his father, Ronald Porter; memorial services will be later; Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton, is in charge of arrangements; Mr. Porter was a graduate of Hampton High School.

RANDALIA -- Mary Jo McFadden, 64, of Randalia, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, at home of cancer; survivors include her husband, John F.; three daughters, Pamela Morales of Cedar Rapids, Patricia Hertog of Arden Hills, Minn., and Anne McFadden of Iowa City; two sons, Michael of Randalia and Vincent of Waterloo; four grandchildren; three brothers, Dr. John Brunkhorst of Waverly, Dr. Joe Brunkhorst of Iowa Falls and Philip Brunkhorst of Masonville; and three sisters, Patricia Maas and Monica Piersall, both of Cedar Rapids, and Marlene Goetschel of McHenry, Ill.; she was preceded in death by a son, Thomas; services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis Catholic Church, Fayette, with burial in the church cemetery; friends may call until 9 p.m. today at Burnham-Wood Funeral Home, West Union, with a 7 p.m. prayer service; memorials may be directed to the family; Mrs. McFadden had worked at Occo Chemical Co. in Oelwein and farmed with her husband.

ALDEN -- Alice Evelyn Cayler, 89, of Dodgeville, Wis., formerly of rural Alden, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998, at Bloomfield Manor, Dodgeville, Wis., of natural causes; survivors include a son, Gene of Dodgeville; a daughter, Carolyn Agar of McAllen, Texas; and nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; she was preceded in death by her husband, Emmett; two daughters, Beverly Cayler and Cheryl Pape; a son, Robert; a grandson; a sister, Dorothy Sexton; and two brothers, Dena and John Dixon; services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church, Williams, with burial in Williams Cemetery; friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Surls Funeral Home, Williams.

CRESCO -- Alma Helm, 87, of Cresco, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, at Regional Health Services of Howard County, Cresco, of natural causes; survivors include two sons, Harold of Cherokee and Lyle of Albert Lea, Minn.; three daughters, Delores Glassel of Hayward, Minn., Barbara Fenske of Cresco and Cheryl Cummins of Albert Lea; 15 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter; a sister, Evelyn Tonn of Grafton, Wis.; and a brother, Warren Ewy of Elma; she was preceded in death by her husband, four brothers, a sister, a granddaughter and a great-grandson; services will be 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Lindstrom Funeral Home, Cresco, with burial at 3:30 p.m. in West Freeborn Lutheran Cemetery, Hartland, Minn.; friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. today and for an hour before services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Engen, 54, of Independence, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo, after a lengthy illness; survivors include her husband, Dick; two daughters, Sally and Robin Engen, both of Independence; her parents, Kathrine and Dale Stupp of Independence; and four sisters, her twin, Judy Clough of Danbury, Rosemary Potts of Independence, Sandra Gardner of Waterloo and Deeana Hurst of Cedar Rapids; she was preceded in death by her birth father, Leland Kimball; and an infant daughter; memorial services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Independence; friends may call after 6 p.m. today at White Funeral Home, Independence; Mrs. Engen was involved in several small business ventures and also helped manage rental properties.

WADENA -- Mary Maxine Aeschliman, 78, of Wadena, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, at Mercy Living Plus, Oelwein, after a lengthy illness; survivors include eight daughters, Annola Rathbun of Las Vegas, Patricia Doocy of Waterloo, Juleena Burton and Evalynn Ver Ness, both of Rochester, Minn., Sherryl Aeschliman and Clairene Steele, both of Wadena, Annalee Nelson of Eyota, Minn., and Marsha Donaldson of Lamont; two sons, Richard and Robert "George," both of Wadena; 26 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ursuleen Kennedy of Spring Hill, Fla.; she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard C.; a son, James; and a brother, Eugene Scovel; services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Volga, with burial in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Wadena; friends may call until 8 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home, Elgin, where there will be a 7:30 p.m. Scripture service; visitation also for an hour before services Wednesday at the church; memorials may be directed to "Heart of Iowa Hospice" or Cancer Treatment Center, Waterloo; Mrs. Aeschliman worked as a cook in area restaurants for many years.

INDEPENDENCE -- Mercedes Logan, 86, of Independence, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, of natural causes; survivors include two sons, Ray of Van Horne and John of Independence; a daughter, Joann Pritchard of Decorah; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Doris Hoit of Mason City; she was preceded in death by her husband, John Raymond in 1995; and a brother, Marcus Crowley; services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Catholic Church, Independence, with burial in the church cemetery; friends may call after 2 p.m. Wednesday at White Funeral Home, Independence, where there will be a 3 p.m. Catholic Daughters of America and parish rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service; Mrs. Logan received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Normal School, Cedar Falls, and had taught country school before her marriage; later she and her husband farmed in Delaware, Buchanan and Fayette counties before moving to Independence in 1965, where they ran the Rush Park Cafe, retiring in 1975; she was past president of the Rosary Society at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Sumner.

WAVERLY -- Francis L. Harrington, 74, of Waverly, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, at Waverly Municipal Hospital of natural causes; survivors include his wife, Bernice; three daughters, Donna Leichtman of New Hampton, Nancy Bahr of Cresco and Lynette Vohsman of Nashua; five grandchildren and a great-granddaughter; and a sister, Helen DeBower of Allison; he was preceded in death by three brothers, Donald, Gerald and Joseph; and a sister, Dorothy Bean; services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Waverly, with burial in the church cemetery; friends may call until 8 p.m. today at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly, with family present from 4 to 8 p.m.; there will be a 7 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary and a 7:30 p.m. vigil service today at the funeral home; memorials may be directed to the family; Mr. Harrington farmed south of Plainfield, retiring in 1993.

IOWA FALLS -- Clarence Alton "C.A." Ramey, 86, of Iowa Falls, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, at Heritage Care Center, Iowa Falls, of natural causes; survivors include four daughters, Pat Donley of Middletown, Calif., Darlene Libro of Reno, Nev., Marlene Achterman of Denver, Colo., and Jolene Rush of Iowa Falls; two sons, Ralph Boylan of Lawrence, Kan., and Robert Ramey of Needles, Nev.; 20 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; four sisters, Ruby Sharpshire and Florence Stackhouse, both of Iowa Falls, Betty Staddler of Faribault, Minn., and Dolly Daughtery of Golden, Minn.; and a brother, Frank of Iowa Falls; he was preceded in death by his wife, Grace E., in 1995; a sister, Laura Bahr; and two brothers, Harold and Richard; services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at First Christian Church, with burial in Northlawn Memory Gardens, both in Iowa Falls; friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Linn's Funeral Home, Iowa Falls, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m.; memorials may be directed to the family; Mr. Ramey owned and operated Scenic City Motel in Iowa Falls from 1968 to 1975; he also had been employed by the Rock Island Railroad, retiring in 1968, and had worked on the Alaskan Highway with Welden Brothers Construction, worked for the Iowa Falls Community Schools (Eastside School), and had worked for Swift and Co.

WELLSBURG -- Lester Anderson, 96, of Wellsburg, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center, Marshalltown, of natural causes; survivors include his wife, Alice; two sons, Jerry of Chicago and David of Kearney, Neb.; a stepson, Wallace Albright of Minnesota; and five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; he was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters; services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Creps-Abels Funeral Home, Eldora, with burial in Eldora Cemetery; friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home; a memorial fund has been established; Mr. Anderson worked for Fisher Control, Marshalltown, for 40 years, retiring in 1969.

CRESCO -- Alfred Meyers, 87, of Cresco, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, at Regional Health Services of Howard County, Cresco, of natural causes; survivors include a niece and nephew; he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert; services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Lindstrom Funeral Home, with burial in New Oregon Cemetery, both in Cresco; visitation for an hour before services Wednesday at the funeral home; Mr. Meyers and his brother owned and operated Meyers Nursery in Cresco for many years.

DECORAH -- Florence T. Stortz, 93, of Decorah, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at the Aase Haugen Home, Decorah, after a lengthy illness; there are no immediate survivors; services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Decorah, with burial in the church cemetery; friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Fjelstul Funeral Home, Decorah, where there will be a 7 p.m, prayer service; visitation also for an hour before services Thursday at the church.

DECORAH -- Robert D. Pagel, 76, of Decorah, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, at Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital, Decorah, of congestive heart failure; survivors include his wife, Annabel; three daughters, Cheryl A. Threlkeld of Postville, Karen A. Fox of Independence and Molly H. Pagel of Decorah; two grandchildren; and three sisters, Thelma Baumgartner, Wanda Miehe and Wanita Dyball, all of Waterloo; he was preceded in death by a son, Thomas; services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Floral Hills Chapel, with burial in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, both in rural Oelwein; friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until services Wednesday at the chapel; memorials may be directed to Winneshiek County Hospice or American Heart Association; Mr. Pagel was employed at Occo Feeds for 30 years and had worked for the Department of Natural Resources fish hatchery for 15 years; he was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

AREDALE -- Audrey A. Bochmann, 82, of Aredale, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at Sheffield Care Center, Sheffield, of natural causes; survivors include her husband, Floyd; two daughters, Avis Thrash of Euclid, Ohio and Belva Sheriff of Dougherty; a son, Max of Naperville, Ill.; and six grandchildren; she was preceded in death by two brothers; and four sisters; services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Aredale United Methodist Church, with burial in Dumont Cemetery, Dumont; friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Dumont; Mrs. Bochmann received a teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls, and was a teacher; she also was president of the Iowa Conference Women's Society of World Service, EUB Church.

AURORA -- Clyde Robert Weston, 78, of Aurora, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at Peoples Hospital Nursing Care Center, Independence, after a brief illness; he is survived by a sister, Frances Leet of Jesup; he was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Peeper; and three brothers, Earl, Clarence and Kenneth; services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Fawcett Funeral Home, with burial in Campton-Oak Hill Cemetery, both in Lamont; friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today and 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Fawcett Funeral Home, Lamont.

OSAGE -- Harold A. Meerdink, 86, of Osage, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at Osage Rehabilitation and Care Center of natural causes; survivors include his wife, Ruth; two daughters, Joyce Ramsey of St. Anthony, Minn., and Rosemary Mader of Hopkins, Minn.; two sons, Keith of Salem, Ore., and Dwight of Orchard; five grandchildren; and a brother, Floyd of Charles City; services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Christian Missionary Alliance Church, Osage, with burial in Orchard Cemetery; friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Champion Funeral Home, Osage, with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m., and also for an hour before services Saturday at the church; Mr. Meerdink graduated from St. Paul Bible Institute and Nyack College in New York and farmed east of Orchard until 1980.

TOLEDO -- Ernest "Ernie" Mayo, 86, of Toledo, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center after an extended illness; there are no immediate survivors; he was preceded in death by his wife, Ilene, in 1991; services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Henderson-Overton Funeral Home, with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery, both in Toledo, with flag-folding rites by Toledo American Legion; friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home; memorial fund has been established; Mr. Mayo retired as a city administrator for Toledo.

WATERLOO -- Kenneth Frank Wendt, 85, of Waterloo, formerly of Buckingham, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at Ravenwood Nursing and Rehab Center of Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease; memorial services 1:30 pm. Monday at Geneseo United Methodist Church, Buckingham, with inurnment in Buckingham Cemetery; no visitation.

EVANSDALE -- Wilma Mae Henry, 76, of Evansdale, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, of natural causes; services pending with Parrott & Wood Family Funeral Care, Waterloo, 232-3235.

CEDAR FALLS -- Berdina Mary Willadsen, 79, of Omaha, Neb., formerly of Cedar Falls, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at Methodist Hospital, Omaha, of natural causes; services 10 a.m. Monday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, 266-7525; visitation 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday and for an hour before services Monday at the funeral home; memorials to American Diabetes Association, Mid America Region, C/O United Way of the Midlands.

WATERLOO -- Arnold Herrmann, 90, of Parkview Nursing & Rehab Center, formerly of Jesup, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at Covenant Medical Center after a lengthy illness; services pending with White Funeral Home, Jesup, 827-3695.

CEDAR FALLS -- Dale L. Slaughter Jr., 76, of 2116 Victory Drive, died at home Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, of cancer; memorial services were 11 a.m. today at St. John Lutheran Church, with private family inurnment in Greenwood Cemetery; Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, 266-7525, is in charge of arrangements; memorials to the church or Cedar Valley Hospice.

OSAGE -- Othmar M. Blake, 73, of Stacyville, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at Stacyville Community Nursing Home of natural causes; services 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Visitation Catholic Church, Stacyville, with burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Meyer; visitation after 2;30 p.m. today at the church hall, where there will be a 3 p.m. Catholic Order of Foresters rosary, a 7:30 p.m. Scripture service and an 8 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary; Champion Funeral Home, Osage, (515) 732-3706, is in charge of arrangements; sons, David and Tim Blake, and daughter, Jean Hemann, all of Osage, are local survivors.

TRAER -- Doug Kinkade, 44, of rural Dysart, died at home Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, after an extended illness; services pending with Overton Funeral Home, Traer, (319) 478-2775; a memorial fund has been established.

WATERLOO -- Steven C. Lantz, 51, of Waterloo, died today, Nov. 12, 1999, at home; cause of death pending an autopsy; services pending with Chapel of Memories-West Family Funeral Care, 233-8437.
