RICEVILLE -- Merritt Eugene "Smitty" Messersmith, 75, of Riceville, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, of a massive heart attack; survivors include his wife, Bea; two daughters, Karen Zahasky of Tucson, Ariz., and Gail Morris of Riceville; five grandchildren; a sister, Carla Pulley of Shenandoah; and a brother, Merlin of Edwards, Calif.; services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with burial in Calvary Cemetery, both in Riceville; friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Lindstrom Funeral Home, Riceville, where there will be a 5 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary and a 7 p.m. Scripture service; Mr. Messersmith was a newspaper editor and was employed at the Shenandoah Sentinel, and at newspapers in Alliance, Neb., Maquoketa, Monticello and Independence; he and his wife purchased the Riceville Recorder in 1957 where he was editor for 39 years, retiring in 1996; he was past president of the Iowa Newspaper Association and the Iowa Newspaper Foundation.

WAVERLY -- Herbert J. Max, 88, of Waverly, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, at Bartels Lutheran Home, Waverly, of natural causes; survivors include his wife, Esther; a daughter, Lois Obregon of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three sons, George of Hickory, N.C., Dale of South Holland, Ill., and Myron of Champaign, Ill.; and 11 grandchildren; he was preceded in death by a brother, Fred; memorial services will be 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Waverly; there will be no visitation, his body was cremated; inurnment will be later in Mount Greenwood Cemetery, Chicago; memorials may be directed to Herbert J. Max Scholarship Fund at Wartburg College or to Bartels Lutheran Home; Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly, is in charge of arrangements; Mr. Max obtained a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Chicago in 1933; after working as a chemist for Abbott Laboratories for several years, he took a government position as a chemist at the USDA Regional Soybean Laboratory on the campus of the University of Illinois in Urbana; he received his master's degree in chemistry and later earned a doctorate in education from the University of Illinois; he taught schools in Rockford, Ill., Sheridan, Ill., and Chicago, and also served as assistant superintendent of the Illinois State Reformatory for Boys; in 1953 he accepted a teaching position in the education department at Wartburg College, and in 1954 became chairman of the department, retiring in 1976; he also was chairman of the Bremer County Democratic Central Committee for several years.
NEW HAMPTON -- Betty J. Visker, 71, formerly of New Hampton, died Friday, Nov. 5, at Dooley County Medical Center, Vienna, Ga., en route to her winter home in Avon Park, Fla.; survivors include her husband, Richard of Avon Park; a son, Scott of Kathleen, Fla.; a daughter, Virginia "Ginny" Visker of Iowa City; and a granddaughter; there were no services; Mrs. Visker was a psychiatric nursing graduate of New York State Hospital; she was employed as a registered nurse in New York state, Rochester, Minn., and at the Medical Associates in Waterloo and the New Hampton Care Center, retiring in 1988.
DUMONT -- Grace L. NASHUA -- Doris E. Lockey Dean, 89, formerly of Nashua, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at the Cedar Falls Health Care Center, Cedar Falls, of natural causes; survivors include three daughters, Wanda, Evelyn and Sophia Lockey, all of Nashua; a son, Wayne Lockey of Waterloo; and five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; she was preceded in death by her husbands, George W. Lockey on Feb. 17, 1939, and Lewis E. IOWA FALLS -- Ruth Caroline Reninger, 92, of Iowa Falls, formerly of Hastings, Neb., died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at Scenic Manor Care Facility, Iowa Falls, of natural causes; survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Eness of Iowa Falls and Eulyn Frostestad of West Branch; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a sister, Gladys Butler of Manson; and a brother, Donald Helgesen of Chicago; she was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, in 1980; a son, the Rev.
