Cassandra E. "Cassie" Freet (1985-2006)
WATERLOO -- Cassandra Eileen "Cassie" Freet, 21, of Waterloo, died in Waterloo on Saturday, April 22, from injuries sustained in an ATV accident.
She was born Jan. 19, 1985, in Waterloo, daughter of Tanya Price Penning and John Freet Sr. She was a 2003 graduate of Waterloo East High School and was employed by Omega Cabinets.
Survivors include: her parents, Tanya (George) Penning of Waterloo and John (Merlene) Freet of Illinois; three brothers, John (Lynnae) Freet Jr. and George Penning, both of Waterloo, and Kyle Freet of Illinois; a sister, Melissa Freet of Washburn; grandparents, Don (Linda) Freet of Gilbertville, Patrick Price of Waterloo, Florence (Robert) Ransdell of Missouri and Henry (Lucy) Penning of Waterloo; great-grandmother, Jean Brand of Waterloo; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and four nieces.
Preceded in death by: maternal grandparents and paternal grandfather.
Services: 1 p.m. Thursday at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Public visitation 4 to 8 p.m. today and 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and for an hour before services Thursday, all at the funeral home.

David Frost (1948-2006)
WATERLOO -- David Paul Frost, 58, of Waterloo, died Thursday, April 20, at home after a lengthy illness.
He was born Jan. 30, 1948, in Waterloo, son of Dr. Irwin J. and Rita Otting Frost.
Mr. Frost attended St. Edward's and Columbus High School. He attended Loras College in Dubuque before being drafted into the U.S. Army for the Vietnam War. He worked for John Deere and various other jobs. He also owned and operated his own maintenance business. He loved fishing and helping others.
Survived by: his mother of Waterloo; a stepdaughter, Sarah; seven sisters, Mary Ann (Jay) Paulukonis of Pennsylvania, Carolyn (David) Thogerson of Ames, Susan (Louis) Fettkether and Julie (Clayton) Thomas, both of Waterloo, Nancy (Don) Bellmont of Minnesota, Beth (Dan) Markowitz of Kansas and Lori (Sanjay) Shah of Cedar Rapids; six brothers, Edward (Francoise) of Virginia, Michael (Molly) of Massachusetts, Mark of Oklahoma, Robert (Jane) of Waterloo, Paul (Jana) of Nebraska and Ted (Joan) of Texas; 32 nieces and nephews; and three great-nephews and two great-nieces.
Preceded in death by: his father; his aunt Melia; and a nephew.
Celebration of Life services: 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street. Public visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Scott Myers (2006)
WATERLOO -- Scott Robert Dean Myers, infant son of Nathan Dean Myers and Bess LeAnn Cronan of Waterloo, died Saturday, April 22, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, where he was born hours earlier on Saturday.
Survived by: his parents; a brother, Jacob Cronan at home; maternal grandparents, Patrick and Teri Cronan of Evansdale; paternal grandparents, Mike Myers of Independence and Lisa Broell of Winthrop; maternal great-grandparents, Harvie and Roberta Fleming and Dixie Cronan, all of Waterloo; and paternal great-grandparents, William and Jo Myers of Fairbank, and Roland "Rollie" and Betty Broell of Cedar Falls.
Preceded in death by: maternal great-grandfathers, Charles Cronan and John Teare.
Graveside services: 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Fairview Cemetery, Waterloo. White Funeral Home, Jesup, is in charge of arrangements.
Irene Klein (1923-2006)
WATERLOO -- Irene Faye Klein, 83, of Waterloo, died Sunday, April 23, at Covenant Medical Center.
She was born Jan. 29, 1923, in Wessington Springs, S.D., daughter of John and Grace Musgrove McCombs. She married Max E. Klein Sr. Sept. 27, 1941, in Waterloo, and they were later divorced.
Mrs. Klein was employed with Chamberlain Manufacturing for 33 years, retiring in 1985.
Survived by: a son, Max Jr. (Margaret) of Waterloo; a daughter, Pamela (Keith) Hansen of Cresco; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren, with two more expected; a brother, Lee (Betty) McCombs of Waterloo; and a sister, Sally Gilfillan of Evansdale.
Preceded in death by: a son, Timothy; three great-grandsons, Samuel, Jakob and Brady; and a sister, Juanita.
Memorial services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bethel Presbyterian Church, with private family inurnment in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway is in charge of arrangements.

Anna E. Galatas (1908-2006)
DIKE -- Anna E. Galatas, 97, of Dike, died Monday, April 17, at Sartori Memorial Hospital, Cedar Falls.
She was born Aug. 25, 1908, near Dike, daughter of John and Anna Zapp Weber. She married Henry Galatas in 1947 in Kansas City, Mo. He died in August 1974.
She graduated from Dike High School in 1928 and worked at Dizlers Cafe the last three years of high school. She later worked at Russell Lamson Hotel in Waterloo. Mrs. Galatas and her husband owned and operated the Barn Coffee Shop until 1962. She worked at UNI as a housekeeper at Bartlett Hall for 10 years until retiring at 65. After her husband's death, she began working a few days a week for Helen and Ralph Immings at the Barn Cafe. She worked there 25 years.
Survivors include: two stepdaughters, Connie Barbatschi of Lanoka Harbor, N.J., and Shirley Baker of Rockville, Md.; four grandchildren and a great-grandson; and a sister-in-law, Ruby Weber of Cedar Falls.
Preceded in death by: two brothers, Chris and John Weber.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Dike United Methodist Church, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery, Dike. Public visitation for an hour before service Wednesday at the church. Dike Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Stanley Matthias (1938-2006)
READLYN -- Stanley V. Matthias, 67, of Readlyn, died Sunday, April 23, at Allen Hospital, Waterloo.
He was born April 30, 1938, son of Walter and Johanna Leonhart Matthias. He married Joan Brunscheon Oct. 1, 1977, at Zion Lutheran Church.
Mr. Matthias graduated from Readlyn High School in 1956. He had previously worked at Chamberlains and Rath Packing in Waterloo and retired from Carnation in Waverly in 1989.
Survived by: his wife; her three sons, Dan (Deb) Brunscheon, Ronald Brunscheon and Jeff (Laurie) Brunscheon, all of Readlyn; and five grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: a brother, Merlin Matthias; and two grandchildren.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Readlyn, with burial in the church cemetery. Public visitation 4 to 8 p.m. today at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Readlyn.

Edmund D. Oppold (1922-2006)
IOWA FALLS -- Edmund Donald Oppold, age 83, of Iowa Falls, died on Friday, April 21, at Scenic Manor Nursing Home in Iowa Falls.
Edmund Donald Oppold was born on July 31, 1922, in Ackley, Iowa, the son of Robert and Gertrude (Lamm) Oppold. He was united in marriage to Marjory Ann Roll on Sept. 30, 1943, in Eldora. He began farming in 1942 and farmed in the Parkersburg area from 1950-56. He then moved to Iowa Falls where he farmed until he retired in 1988. He was united in marriage to Jeanne Burton on October 23, 1993, in Iowa Falls. Edmund was a member of the St. Mark's Catholic Church and the Iowa Falls Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. No. 1674. He lettered in High School wrestling and was an avid wrestling fan. He loved his Canadian fishing trips and was an active collector of gas engines.
He is survived by his two daughters, Vikkii Beasley and her husband, Glen, of Yorkville, Ill., and Beverly Oppold Blessman of Clear Lake; a son, David Oppold of Houston, Texas; two grandsons, Wade Beasley and his friend, Amy Larson of Yorkville, and Brad Beasley and his wife, Jill, of Omaha, Neb.; seven stepgrandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; two stepdaughters, Marianne Jones and her husband, Ron, of Iowa Falls and Lynne Ciaramita and her husband, Peter, of Racine, Wis.; a stepson, Jim Burton and his wife, Christine, of La Porte City; two sisters, Evelyn Lawless and her husband, Harry, of Eldora and Ruth Scallon of Iowa Falls; three brothers, Francis Oppold and his wife, Peggy, of Iowa Falls, Robert Oppold and his wife, Pat, of Waterloo and Joseph Oppold and his wife, Gladys, of Waterloo; and two sisters-in-law, Agnes Mary Oppold of Eldora and Mary Ann Oppold of Raleigh, NC.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Marjory; second wife, Jeanne; and two brothers, Melvin and James Oppold.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mark's Catholic Church in Iowa Falls with burial in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Ackley. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls with a 5 p.m. Scripture service. A memorial fund has been established. Dr. Gregorio Kazenelson
WATERLOO -- Dr. Gregorio Kazenelson, 71, distinguished local pediatric cardiologist of Waterloo, died Monday, April 24, at the USC University Hospital in Los Angeles, Calif., from pulmonary fibrosis.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Sons of Jacob Synagogue, Waterloo, with burial in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends after 4 p.m. that afternoon at Sunnyside Country Club.

Donald K. "Donnie" Hatter (1937-2006)
WAVERLY -- Donald Kay "Donnie" Hatter, 69, of Waverly, died Saturday morning, April 22, at Grandview Health Care Center, Oelwein, after a brief illness.
He was born Jan. 1, 1937, in Spring Valley, Texas, the son of Carroll Sr. and Evie (Stephens) Hatter. He graduated from Lorena High School in Lorena, Texas. In 1961, Donnie graduated from Texas A&M with a Bachelor of Science degree in rural sociology. He accepted a position with the Internal Revenue Service in Sacramento, Calif., as a chief tax instructor. Donnie was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Robinson on March 17, 1962, in Beverly Hills, Calif. In 1963, he went to work for McDonald Douglas as a parts warranty manager for Apollo flights.
Donnie later moved to Bakersfield, Calif., where he was a police officer for more than four years. He retired and moved to Kosse, Texas, to help take care of his father. In 1996, Donnie moved to Sumner, and then to Waverly, to be near his family. He moved to Grandview Care Center in Oelwein in 2002 and enjoyed watching NASCAR races, working on old cars, visiting with people and listening to others. Donnie had a magnetic personality that everyone gravitated to. He had the gift of gab that could cheer up anyone's day. Donnie will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. "Good-bye Darlin'."
Survivors include his son, Steven Hatter of Waverly; a daughter, Debbie (Neil) Brase of Westgate; two grandchildren, Arielle and Troy Brase; and an aunt, Jeanette McGinnes of Waco, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his former wife, Mary Elizabeth; and a brother, Carroll "Goog" Hatter Jr.
Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, April 29, 2006, at the Lighthouse Assembly of God Church, Oelwein, with the Rev. David Canfield officiating. The family will greet friends and relatives before the service at the church on Saturday. Inurnment will be later in Moody, Texas. Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein, is in charge of arrangements.
WATERLOO -- Duane J. "Duke" Van Erem, 69, of 109 E. Third St., Apt. 210, died Wednesday, July 8, 1998, at Allen Memorial Hospital of natural causes.
He was born Nov 21, 1928, in Waterloo, son of Louis and Sarah Coughlin Van Erem. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps for 15 years. He worked for Construction Machinery Co. for 10 years and Weisman Steele, retiring in 1978.
Survived by: three sisters, Frances Wahl, Myrtle Schafer and Pearl Ertle, all of Waterloo; and a brother, William of Chicago.
Preceded in death by: a brother, Robert; and two sisters, Inez DuCharme and Virginia Paredes.

Joan M. Wendling (1942-2006)
WATERLOO -- Joan M. Wendling, 63, of Waterloo, formerly of Independence, died Wednesday, April 19, at Covenant Medical Center following a lengthy illness.
She was born June 10, 1942, in Independence, daughter of William H. and Donna A. Conrad Wendling. She was a 1961 graduate of St. John's Catholic High School, Independence, and was employed with St. Francis Hospital in Waterloo for 15 years prior to her retirement.
Survivors include: a sister, Judy Leisinger of Cedar Falls; and four brothers, John (Patricia) Wendling of Cedar Rapids, Tom (Judi) Wendling of Dixon, Ill., Jim (Pat) Wendling of Independence and Larry (Lori) Wendling of Hudson.
Services: 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Catholic Church, Independence, with burial in the church cemetery. Public visitation 4 to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, with a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. parish vigil service.
