Alabama School Yearbooks by State and County

WATERLOO -- Evert "Ave" High, 73, of Knoxville, formerly of Waterloo, died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, at Knoxville Veterans Hospital of natural causes.
He was born Sept. 13, 1925, in Carrville, son of Eldon and Hattie Bartlett High.
Mr. High worked for the Illinois Central Railroad and for Mayflower Moving and Storage. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Survived by: five brothers, Harold of Garrison, Texas, James of Layton, Utah, Donald of Williams, Paul of Charles City and Leonard "John" of Waterloo; three sisters, Doris Anderson of Columbia, Tenn., Esther of Mount Pleasant and Ruth Viers of Waterloo.
Preceded in death by: two brothers, Ralph and Robert; and two sisters, Helen Fistler and Dorothy Carleton.
Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service/West Ridgeway, with burial in Waterloo Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 138 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1623. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday.
Memorials: may be directed to the family.

WATERLOO -- William L. Carleton Jr., 77, of Waterloo, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, at Covenant Medical Center of an apparent heart attack.
He was born Dec. 12, 1921, in Little Rock, Ark., son of William and Nettie Behrans Butler Carleton. He married Dorothy High on March 8, 1957, in Hernato, Miss. She died June 29, 1993.
Mr. Carleton was employed at John Deere in the maintenance department. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Korea and Vietnam.
Survived by: a son, Ronald of Waterloo; a grandchild; a brother, Tommie of Little Rock, Ark.; and a sister, Grace McGaughuey of Little Rock, Ark.
Preceded in death by: three infant daughters, Deborah, Sharon and Tammie; three brothers, Vernon, Frank and Isaac; and a sister, Ruby.
Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service/West Ridgeway, with burial in Waterloo Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 138 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1623. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

CEDAR FALLS -- James R. Preece, 64, of Cedar Falls, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo, of an aneurysm.
He was born Oct. 13, 1934, in Sioux City, son of Charles and Marie Foisy Preece. He married Patricia Cutler in Sioux City and they were later divorced. He then married Laura J. Corwin on March 14, 1987, in Spirit Lake.
Mr. Preece was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War. He was employed as a drug and alcohol counselor with Dickinson County Memorial Hospital, Spirit Lake, until 1988, then worked at the state prison in Clarinda, retiring in 1996.
Survived by: his wife; a daughter, Janine Preece of Cedar Falls; five sons, James of Henderson, Tenn., David of Romeoville, Ill., Ronald of Cedar Falls, Jerry of Lakeville, Minn., and Robert of Lamont, Ill.; three stepsons, James, Scott and Robert Ackles, all of Cedar Falls; a stepdaughter, Tammy Boyer of Cedar Falls; 22 grandchildren; and three brothers, Bob of Kansas City, Kan., and Tom and Bill, both of Tucson, Ariz.
Preceded in death by: two sisters, Diane Connors and Bonnie Rash; and two brothers, Dick and George.
Services: 1 p.m. Thursday at Richardson Funeral Home, with inurnment in Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens at a later date. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Visitation also for an hour before services Thursday.

CEDAR FALLS -- Bruce Keeling, 35, of Cedar Falls, died at home Monday, Dec. 28, 1998.
He was born Sept. 23, 1963, in Patchogue, N.Y., son of Howard J. and Dolores A. Kabatnik Keeling Sr. He had been employed as a glass cutter on high rise buildings in Florida.
Survived by: his parents of Cedar Falls; a brother, Howard J. Jr. of Waterloo; two sisters, Darlene Wiltzius of Casselberry, Fla., and Sharon Minnich of Oriedo, Fla.; and maternal grandmother, Anna Orna of Cedar Falls.
Services: 10 a.m. Thursday at Richardson Funeral Home, with inurnment in Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens at a later date. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

CEDAR FALLS -- Okkie Mehmen, 78, of Cedar Falls, died at home Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, of congestive heart failure.
He was born April 1, 1920, in Clarksville, son of William and Ella Lursen Mehmen. He married Ruth B. Raisch on Nov. 13, 1939, in Plainfield. She died July 6, 1975.
Mr. Mehmen was employed by John Deere Tractor Works, Waterloo, retiring in 1975.
Survived by: a daughter, Gloria Pierson of Cedar Falls; a son, Mike of Cedar Falls; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Ella Ramker of Greene, Elizabeth Rutter of Evansdale and Mamie Armstrong of Hemet, Calif.
Preceded in death by: a son, Richard; two grandchildren; four brothers, Fred, John, Carl and William; three sisters, Gertrude, Effie and Grace; and four brothers and sisters in infancy.
Services: 2:30 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the church parlor, with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Visitation also for an hour before services Thursday at the church. Richardson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

WATERLOO -- Erma F. Lassen, 93, of Friendship Village, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died at the village on Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, of natural causes.
She was born Jan. 30, 1905, in Vinton, daughter of Frank and Cora Bell Ames Bassett. She married Lee Roy Lassen on Dec. 15, 1926, in La Porte City. He died Oct. 20, 1980.
Mrs. Lassen was a sales representative for Amway and Nutrilite products.
Survived by: a son, Robert LeRoy of Garrison; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: a daughter, Mardene Wyckoff; and a brother, Leland Bassett.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball, with burial in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8:30 p.m. today and for an hour before services Thursday at the chapel.

WATERLOO -- Donald C. Barnthouse, 72, of 1117 Maxhelen Blvd., formerly of Visalia, Calif., died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at Allen Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.
He was born June 7, 1926, in Alton, Ill., son of Harry and Helen Lenz Barnthouse. He married Peggy Lloyd in 1948 in California. She died in 1976.
Mr. Barnthouse worked as a real estate broker in Visalia until his retirement this year. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survived by: two daughters, Nancy Seidler of Waterloo and Judy Veneris of Colorado Springs, Colo.; four grandchildren; and three sisters, Eileen Voss of Santa Barbara, Calif., Clara Sullivan of Hayden Ind., and Barbara Ertel of North Vernon, Ind.
Services: will be in Hayden, with burial in Hayden Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Locke Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: may be directed to Rosewood Estates.

CEDAR FALLS -- Anna F. Pierce, 93, of Western Home Martin Center, died there Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, of natural causes.
She was born Jan. 17, 1905, in Bangor, daughter of Boyd and Ethleen Davis Carey. She married Roscoe Jackson Pierce on Nov. 16, 1925, in Ames. He died April 11, 1983.
Survived by: a son, Roscoe L. of Cedar Falls; a daughter, Mary E. Fosse of Cedar Falls; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: two sisters, Maxine Carey and Willian Jones; two half sisters, Lucille Funk and Helen Sneider; and an infant half brother.
Services: 1:30 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, Cedar Falls, with burial in Rosehill Cemetery, Grundy Center. Friends may call for an hour before services Thursday at the church. Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

WATERLOO -- Harry J. Allen Sr., 77, of 4041 Crossway Drive, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at Allen Memorial Hospital of natural causes.
He was born July 10, 1921, in Waterloo, son of William W. and Martha Woellert Allen. He married Agatha Pearl Baum on Feb. 18, 1939, in Waterloo. She died May 25, 1998.
Mr. Allen worked at Rath Packing Co. for 35 years, retiring in 1983. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survived by: two daughters, Martha M. Lewis of Albert Lea, Minn., and Nancy L. Downs of Waterloo; two sons, Harry J. Jr. of Columbus, Ga., and William W. II of Waterloo; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Wygle of Ionia; and two brothers, Carl Fuller of Waterloo and Ken Fuller of Bentonville, Ark.
Preceded in death by: a brother, Wilbur.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, with burial in Poyner Township Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Locke Funeral Home, and for an hour before services Thursday at the church.

CEDAR FALLS -- Howard P. Hinrichs, 78, of the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home, formerly of 1710 Washington St., died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo, of natural causes.
He was born Oct. 23, 1920, in Readlyn, son of Louie and Anna Zabel Hinrichs. He married Genevieve M. Hansen on Nov. 20, 1948, in Cedar Falls.
Mr. Hinrichs was employed at Viking Pump Inc. before retiring.
Survived by: his wife; two daughters, Mary Naber of Waterloo and Carole Petersen of Osceola; five grandchildren; and two sisters, Lucinda Mirs and Leona Flynn, both of Waterloo.
Preceded in death by: a sister, Julia Reuscher; and three brothers, Walter, Edward, and an infant, LaVerne.
Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with burial in Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Richardson Funeral Home, and for an hour before services Wednesday at the church.

WATERLOO -- Ervin D. Randall, 74, of 209 Spieker Road, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998, at Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center, Marshalltown, of natural causes.
He was born June 1, 1924, in Lawler, son of Edgar and May Chandler Randall. He married Mable Elizabeth Cutsforth on June 24, 1949, in Des Plaines, Ill.
Mr. Randall was a heavy equipment operator in California for 40 years, retiring in 1986. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survived by: his wife; a son, Ronald Joseph of Santa Barbara, Calif.; two daughters, Judy Randall-Green of Waterloo and Connie England of Paso Robles, Calif.; and five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Preceded in death by: a sister, Dorothy Wilson; and a brother, Clarence "Pete."
Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, Waterloo, with burial at 2 p.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery, Lawler. Graveside military rites will be conducted by Lawler American Legion. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today and for an hour before services Wednesday at the funeral home.
