Alabama School Yearbooks by State and County

CEDAR FALLS -- Jeanne Smith Nielsen, 82, of Cedar Falls, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at Sartori Memorial Hospital from complications of influenza.
She was born July 10, 1917, in Waverly, daughter of Lawrence and Gertrude Ogbin Smith. She married Ross A. Nielsen on March 25, 1940.
Mrs. Nielsen was president of both the UNI Faculty Dames Club and the Waterloo Kennel Club.
Survived by: her husband; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: a daughter, Sharon Kay Valo.
Services: There will be no visitation or services, her body was cremated. Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: may be directed to Jeanne Smith Nielsen Collection at Plainfield Public Library, Plainfield, or Ross and Jeanne Scholarship Fund at the University of Northern Iowa Foundation.

WATERLOO -- Lucille G. Lowe, 93, of 142 Graceline Blvd., died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at Covenant Medical Center of natural causes.
She was born Aug. 18,1906, in Waterloo, daughter of George and Sadie Beal Huntington. She married Lambert L. Lowe on April 20, 1929, in Waterloo. He died March 25, 1974.
Mrs. Lowe received a bachelor's degree in music from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, in 1927.
Survived by: a son, Robert L. of Waterloo; and a grandson.
Preceded in death by: three brothers, Roger, Robert and Leo Huntington.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery chapel, with burial in the cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Locke Funeral Home.
Memorials: may be directed to Kimball Avenue United Methodist Church.

EVANSDALE -- Jesse M. Hicks, 79, of 125 Hansen Drive, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, of congestive heart failure.
He was born April 18, 1920, in Wadena, son of Lucian and Ellen Poor Hicks. He married Maxine G. Holtzman on Jan. 16, 1947, in Fayette.
Mr. Hicks retired from Rath Packing Co. in 1982 after 30 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survived by: his wife; a son, Randy Jesse of Waterloo; three daughters, Diana Thomas of Waterloo, Carol Williams of Independence and Janet Bergan of Evansdale; six grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a brother, Joe of Oelwein; and a sister, Mary Ellen Zander of Tripoli.
Preceded in death by: two sisters, Vera Wilson and Lucille McLavey.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mark United Methodist Church, Evansdale, with burial in Floral Hills Memorial Garden, rural Oelwein. Friends may call for an hour before services Saturday at the church. Floral Hills Chapel, rural Oelwein, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: may be directed to the family.

WATERLOO -- Harry E. Tournier, 69, of the Cedar Falls Healthcare Center, formerly of Waterloo, died at the center Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, of cancer.
He was born Nov. 26, 1930, in Waterloo, son of Walter and Ureth Frye Tournier. He was a line worker at Rath Packing Co. for 32 years, retiring in 1985.
Survived by: a son, Darin of Cedar Falls; a daughter, Connie Vikre of Tempe, Ariz.; and three brothers, Kenneth and Richard, both of Cedar Falls, and Russell of California.
Preceded in death by; a brother, Howard; and a sister, Darlene LaPole.
Services: were 10 a.m. today at Garden View Chapel, with burial in Garden of Memories.
Memorials: may be directed to the family.

LA PORTE CITY -- Patricia A. Clark, 61, of 503 Bishop Ave., died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at Hospice House, Waterloo, of cancer.
She was born April 27, 1938, in Tipton, daughter of Charles and Lucile Wethington Driscoll. She married Daniel P. Clark on June 11, 1960, in Tipton.
Mrs. Clark received a bachelor's degree in elementary education in 1970 from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, and was an elementary school teacher for 34 years, 30 years in the La Porte City schools.
Survived by: her husband; three daughters, Laura A. McFarland of Carlisle, Lisa M. Clark of Des Moines and Stacey E. Takle of Waterloo; two grandchildren; and two brothers, Bill Driscoll of Tipton and Gene Driscoll of Washington.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in West View Cemetery, both in La Porte City. There will be no public visitation. Huisman Funeral Home, La Porte City, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.

WATERLOO -- Joseph E. Henry, 44, of 142 Rachael St., died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at Covenant Medical Center emergency room of a heart attack.
He was born Nov. 27, 1955, in Seattle, Wash., son of George R. and Lupe Lara Henry Sr. He married Brenda K. Cowert on Nov. 27, 1982, in Columbus, Ga.
Mr. Henry received a bachelor's degree in history and had served as a Major in the U.S. Army. He was senior operations manager for Ryder Integrated Logistics.
Survived by: his wife; a son, Bryan of Waterloo; his parents of Marysville, Wash.; and two brothers, George Robert Jr. of Edmonds, Wash., and James of Lynnwood, Wash.
Services: 5 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, with burial in Columbus.
Memorials: may be directed to Blind Babies Foundation.

WATERLOO -- James Muehlbach Honan, 44, of Olathe, Kan., formerly of Waterloo, died at home Feb. 14, 2000.
He was born July 28, 1955, in Kansas City, Mo., son of John O'Rourke and Elizabeth Lucile Muehlbach Honan. He married Patricia Elizabeth Dowhower on July 17, 1981, in Waterloo.
Mr. Honan obtained a bachelor's degree from the University of Kansas, Lawrence, in 1978 and was employed by Reed Cadillac, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Frost Tax Service, Mercantile Bank and Norwest Bank. He was past president of the Rotary Club and initiated the Gateway Golf program for the handicapped.
Survived by: his two sons, Kevin Daniel and Theodore James "TJ," both of Independence, Kan.; a daughter, Jannette Elizabeth Honan of Independence; and two sisters, Nancy Suzanne Jones of Shawnee Mission, Kan., and Sharon Ann Cramond of Shawnee, Kan.
Preceded in death by: his parents and four brothers, John Anthony, Steven Francis and two infants.
Memorial services: Tuesday at St. Paul's Church, Olathe. McGilley-Hogue, Overland Park, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: may be directed to St. Andrew's School Library, Independence, Kan., or to charity of donor's choice.

Margaret Boedeker
MAYNARD -- Margaret I. Boedeker, 80, of Maynard, Iowa, died on Tuesday evening, February 22, 2000 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, after a brief illness.
Funeral Service: 2:00 P.M. Sunday, February 27, 2000 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Maynard, Iowa, with Rev. Ervin Hesterberg officiating. Visitation: 4 to 8 P.M. Saturday at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Maynard, and for one hour before services at the church on Sunday. Burial: Long Grove Cemetery, Maynard, Iowa. Arrangements by Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Maynard, Iowa. Memorial Fund: St. Paul Lutheran Church, Randalia United Methodist Church or to the donor's choice.
Survivors include: two stepsons: Frank Boedeker of Goose Creek, South Carolina and Allen Boedeker of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; six stepgrandchildren and several stepgreat-grandchildren; a sister: Gladys Rife of Mount Vernon, Iowa; a sister-in-law: Erma Talcott of Des Moines; and many nieces and nephews.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Martin on February 2, 1986, also by three brothers: Charles, Wesley and Leonard Talcott and an infant sister, Inez.
Margaret Inez Boedeker was born the daughter of Myron E. and Carrie V. Talcott on June 25, 1919. During her childhood at Tall Oaks Farm, Center Township, Fayette County, Randalia, Iowa, Margaret began her very active and busy life as a student at Randalia High School, 4-H member, Randalia Church and Epworth League member, member of Rainbow Girls in West Union, Iowa.
In 1941, she graduated from Iowa State College in Ames (ISU) with a degree in Home Economics. She served in the Bureau of Indian Affairs from 1941 till 1961. She was Home Economics teacher, department head, administrator in such wide ranging areas as Macy, Nebraska; Oraibi, Colorado; Pine Ridge, Dakota; Riverside, California; Wrangel and White Mountain, Alaska. Margaret received her Master's Degree from South Dakota State University at Brookings, South Dakota, 1961.
On July 29, 1961, Margaret married Martin John Boedeker in the Methodist Church, Randalia, Iowa. They moved to Tall Oaks Farm. Thereafter Margaret continued her professional work in Social Services for the elderly in West Union, Iowa. When they sold Tall Oaks, Margaret served as Director of Vocational Rehabilitation in the Cedar Falls region and became President of the ten-state Vocational Rehabilitation Organization.
After retirement, Margaret and Martin moved back to a home in Maynard, Iowa. They were active in St. Paul Lutheran Evangelical Church, Community Club, school and library work. After Martin's death in 1986, Margaret converted their bungalow into a Bed and Breakfast facility. She became President of the Eastern Iowa Bed and Breakfast Organization. Always active in the Democratic Party, she served on the County Democratic Committee. She continued her duties and joy in the Lutheran Church Altar Guild and the church Choir, was an active member of United Church Women and became a member of the Oelwein Goodwill Board. For several years she was a member of the State Disabilities Commission as well as the local committee. Among her additional major personal involvements in public works are those presented here by Ollie Pleggenkuhl, Coordinator of the Fayette County Tourism Council. Margaret staffed booths at the Fayette County Fair, the Iowa State Fair, and the Legislative Showcase (she knows every legislator and they know her), she was a Team Iowa Leader, a member of the Turkey River Tourism Group (Silos and Smokestacks connection), was a member of the Fayette County Sesquicentennial Commission, and took part in the Eisenhower Plan for the promotion of peace and friendship by being a part of an exchange program to Russia.
Margaret was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where she sang in the church choir. She was also a member of the American Association of University Women, Home Economics Association, Rehabilitation association, Past Regional President of the National Rehabilitation Association, Past Treasurer of the Iowa Rehabilitation Association, American Association of University Women, Iowa Bed and Breakfast Association, Fayette County Tourism Council, Eastern Iowa Tourism Association and the Tourism Federation of Iowa, Fayette County Historical Society and Genealogical Society.
Margaret Boedeker and her sister, Dr. Gladys Talcott Rife, traveled widely together and shared museum and preservation work on the board of the Fayette County Historical Consortium, Inc., and as Directors of the Old Town Hall/Jail Museum in Maynard.
Margaret I. Boedeker had a gift for life, and her life was a gift.

WATERLOO -- Dorothy Ann Cockhren, 45, of San Diego, formerly of Waterloo, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at San Diego Scripp-Mercy Hospital of a heart attack.
She was born Nov. 14, 1954, in Greenwood, Miss., daughter of Sandy and Nercise Hazel Cockhren. She was a nurses' aide for many years.
Survived by: two daughters, Deborah and Delores Cockhren, both of San Diego; a son, Demetrius of San Diego; 10 grandchildren; her mother of Waterloo; five sisters, Sadie Hill, Julie Mae Cockhren and Willie Mae Bolden, all of Waterloo, and Martha and Katie Cockhren, both of San Diego; and five brothers, Sammie Lee and James Cockhren, both of Waterloo, J.C. and David Cockhren, both of Cedar Rapids, and Charles Cockhren of San Diego.
Preceded in death by: her father; a sister, Pearlie Stringfellow; and a brother, Walter Lee Cockhren.
Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Community Baptist Church, with burial in Garden of Memories. Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Parrott & Wood Family Funeral Care, and for an hour before services Monday at the church.
Memorials: may be directed to 2416 Idaho St.

CEDAR FALLS -- Roger C. Hostetler, 77, of Missouri City, Texas, formerly of Cedar Falls, died at home Wednesday, March 1, 2000, of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
He was born Sept. 12, 1922, in Waterloo, son of Claude Hostetler and Emily McBurney, and raised by his aunt, Lepha Hostetler. He married Marjorie Lewis in 1947.
Mr. Hostetler served with the U.S. Marine Corps in the Pacific during World War II. He was employed at Rath
Packing Company until his retirement.
Survived by: his wife; three daughters, Mary Fratzke of Missouri City, Joanna Holm of Dike and Janice Hanson of Ankeny; three sons, Roger of Edmond, Okla., David of Seattle, Wash., and James of Cedar Falls; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: a sister.
Private family services: will be held in Missouri City. Garden Oaks Funeral Home of Houston is in charge of arrangements.
