Alabama School Yearbooks by State and County

WATERLOO -- Alma P. Orth, 91, of Waterloo, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at Parkview Nursing and Rehab Center of natural causes.
She was born July 3, 1908, in Colo, daughter of Gale and Lena Reingardt Etnier. She married Otto Petersen on Dec. 9, 1931, in Iowa Falls. He died in 1939. She then married Henry Orth on Feb. 12, 1945, in Waverly. He died May 9, 1986.
Survived by: two sons, Dale Petersen of Waterloo and William Petersen of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Iva Boddy and Pauline Maisel, both of Hubbard, and Alice Lageschulte of Waverly.
Preceded in death by: a son, Gale Petersen; and two sisters, Mabel Squire and Mary Lageschulte.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at Garden View Chapel, Waterloo, with burial in Harlington Cemetery, Waverly. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and for an hour before services Monday at the chapel.
Memorials: may be directed to Parkview Nursing and Rehab Center or Redeemer Lutheran Church, Washburn.

WATERLOO -- Weir "Bud" Uhlenberg, 82, of 5734 Aster Lane, formerly of Eagle Township, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at Parkview Nursing and Rehab Center from complications of a stroke.
He was born April 19, 1917, in Marshalltown, son of Harry and Inez Hildebrand Uhlenberg. He married Flora Porter on Aug. 22, 1942, in Waterloo.
Mr. Uhlenberg farmed and raised dairy cows in Eagle Township, retiring in 1996.
Survived by: his wife; two sons, John of La Porte City and Mark of Rochester, Minn.; two daughters, Jane Ryan and Mary Huffman, both of Waterloo; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: a sister, Carolyn Brandon.
Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Bethel Presbyterian Church, with inurnment at a later date in Amity Cemetery, Reinbeck. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Locke Funeral Home, and for an hour before services Monday at the church.
Memorials: may be directed to the church.

WATERLOO -- Eugene J. Hogan, 79, of 1434 Rainbow Drive, died at home Wednesday, March 1, 2000, of natural causes.
He was born Aug. 3, 1920, in Riceville, son of Joseph and Violetta Murphy Hogan. He married LaDonna Costello on June 19, 1940, in Waterloo.
Mr. Hogan was employed at Rath Packing Co. as a sales manager for 42 years, retiring in 1982. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater.
Survived by: his wife; three sons, Dennis E. of Waterloo, Michael J. of Columbus, Ohio, and Patrick T. of Iowa City; two daughters, Sally Mascaro of Farmington, Conn., and LaDonna Stockton of Midlothian, Va.; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Ben of Waterloo; and three sisters, Geraldine Lemon of Seattle, Wash., Shirley Nemmers of Waterloo and Margine Weber of Des Moines.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and Evansdale AMVETS Post 31. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 3 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service.
Memorials: may be directed to the church or Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

CEDAR FALLS -- Lori Jean Hacker, 46, of North Las Vegas, formerly of Cedar Falls, died at home Wednesday, March 1, 2000.
She was born Oct. 31, 1953, in Cedar Falls, daughter of Cecil G. and Gilma Hack Nelson. She married James Hacker.
Mrs. Hacker worked as an administrative assistant for a moving company.
Survived by: her husband; her father of Dunkerton; and two brothers, Victor Nelson of Utah and Ken Nelson of Iowa City.
Memorial services: 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Palm Mortuary-Cheyenne, Las Vegas.

WATERLOO -- Nadine N. Klingaman, 87, of Friendship Village Retirement Center, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at the center of natural causes.
She was born March 23, 1913, in Hudson, daughter of W.O. and Emma Steuben Arter. She married Elton Brandhorst on Aug. 7, 1934, in Waterloo. He died Sept. 22, 1967. She married Earl Klingaman on Aug. 8, 1971, in Waterloo. He died Sept. 28, 1980.
Mrs. Klingaman attended Iowa State Teacher's College (University of Northern Iowa), Cedar Falls.
Survived by: two sons, David Brandhorst of Chicago and Bill Brandhorst of Goose Creek, S.C.; a stepson, Dick Klingaman of Waterloo; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Wilma Kristensen of Audubon.
Preceded in death by: four sisters and a brother.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Hammond Avenue Brethren Church, Waterloo, with burial in Hudson Cemetery, Hudson. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Locke Funeral Home.
Memorials: may be directed to the church or Friendship Village Auxiliary.

TOLEDO -- Harry R. Anderson, 85, of rural Toledo, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center, Marshalltown, after a brief illness; survivors include his wife, Ruth; two sons, Dick of Dubuque and Gary L. of Golden, Colo.; a daughter, Shari Grieve of Pewaukee, Wis.; three grandchildren; two brothers, Ralph W. of State Center and Donald E. of Marshalltown; and a sister, Charlotte Roberts of Marshalltown; memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, Toledo, with burial at a later date; there will be a gathering of friends and family in the church fellowship hall after the service; Henderson-Overton Funeral Home, Toledo, is in charge of arrangements.

CHARLES CITY -- Icel May Williams, 95, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, April 25, 2000, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City, of a heart ailment; survivors include a daughter, Cheryl Beaudry of Cedar Rapids; a son, Gordon of Charles City; and three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; she was preceded in death by her husband, Herschel, on Feb. 12, 1978; a daughter, Phyllis McKay; two sisters, Alma Rich and Pearl Wilde; and a brother, Ira Riley; services at 1:30 p.m. today at Grace United Methodist Church, Story City, with burial in Story City Cemetery.

DECORAH -- John Kimber, 68, of Decorah, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, Wis., after a lengthy illness; survivors include his wife, Vivian; six sons, Mike of Waukon, Russ of Owasso, Okla., Pat and Jeff, both of Decorah, David of Cresco and Greg of Clermont; four daughters, Julie Bloxham of Waukon, Cathy and Mary Huinker, both of Ossian, and Linda Blake of Decorah; 29 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert of Minneapolis and Gail of Hot Springs, Ark.; and two sisters, Elizabeth Nelson of Burr Oak and Kathleen Powers of Decorah; services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Bridget's Catholic Church, Bluffton, with burial in the church cemetery; friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at French & Balik Funeral Home, Decorah, and for an hour before services Saturday at the church; there will be a 5 p.m. prayer service today at the funeral home.

FREDERICKSBURG -- Donald L. Gruenberg, 49, of Fredericksburg, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center, New Hampton, of natural causes; survivors include his wife, Linda; two son, Shane of Fredericksburg and Chad of Lawler; his mother, Alice Gruenberg of Sumner; a brother, Keith of Layton, Utah; and two sisters, Donna Tremaine of Sumner and Carol Ritter of Florida; he was preceded in death by his father, Alvin; services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church-Stapleton, Waucoma, with burial in Hawkeye Cemetery, Hawkeye; friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Chenoweth & Son Funeral Home, Fredericksburg; memorials may be directed to the family; Mr. Gruenberg was a 1968 graduate of Fredericksburg High School and had been employed by Wiley Ag Construction, Waucoma, for around 25 years.

MITCHELL -- Clarence J. "Bud" Fischer, 70, of Mason City, formerly of Mitchell, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, near Castalia, of natural causes; survivors include three sons, Dennis, John and Lynn, all of Mitchell; six grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Phillips of Waucoma and Mary Lou Bigler of Jackson Junction; and four brothers, Martin of Festina, Micky of Waucoma, Jerry of Fort Atkinson and Robert of Gladbrook; he was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol; a sister, Venita Phillips; and his fiancee, Evelyn Holms; services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Faith Lutheran Church, with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery, both in Mitchell; graveside military rites will be conducted by Osage American Legion Post; friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Champion Funeral Home, Osage, and for an hour before services Saturday at the church; Mr. Fischer was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War; he worked for 25 years in Mason City at the Decker and Armour meat packing plants.

WAVERLY -- Raymond M. Toresdahl, 86, of Waverly, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at home of natural causes; survivors include his wife, Marjorie; a daughter, Catherine Cool of Carrollton, Texas; two granddaughters; and a brother, Emory of Cedar Rapids; he was preceded in death by a brother, Gordon; services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, with burial in Harlington Cemetery, both in Waverly; friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly, and for an hour before services Saturday at the church; memorials may be directed to the family; Mr. Toresdahl farmed, worked at an Iowa State University hog farm, then worked in the maintenance department at the National Disease Lab, Ames, retiring in 1975.

CHARLES CITY -- Florence I. Melvin, 85, of Charles City, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at the Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City, from complications of Alzheimer's disease; survivors include a son, Cameron of California; and a granddaughter; she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Curtiss, on July 9, 1994; and a brother, Robert Benda Sr.; services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Charles City, with inurnment at a later date in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City; friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, Charles City, and for an hour before services Monday at the church; Mrs. Melvin was employed at the former Oliver/White Farm tractor factory and at the Melrose Insurance Agency, both in Charles City.

GENEVA -- Raymond H. Klein, 63, of Newton, formerly of Geneva, died Thursday, April 27, 2000, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines, from pneumonia; survivors include a brother, Jack of Woodburn; and two half sisters, Charlotte Burrington and Margaret Leonard, both of Waterloo; graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Laurel Hill Cemetery, Des Moines; friends may visit for an hour before services Monday at the cemetery; Hamilton's Funeral Home, Des Moines, is in charge of arrangements.

MAYNARD -- Helen E. Polk, 90, of Maynard, died Tuesday, April 25, 2000, at the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home, Strawberry Point, after a lengthy illness; survivors include three sons, Eldon of Hawkeye, Weldon of Wonewoc, Wis., and Duane of Grand Junction, Colo.; a daughter, Geraldine Kelly of Maynard; 15 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Erma Smith of Bervior, Mo.; she was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald, on July 16, 1994; a granddaughter; a great-grandson; and a sister, Elsie Ross; services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Hintz-Geilenfeld Funeral Home, Oelwein, with burial in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Hazleton; friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today and for an hour before services Saturday at the funeral home; a memorial fund has been established.

OSAGE -- Arthur W. Troge, 100, of Osage, died Thursday, April 27, 2000, at the Faith Lutheran Home, Osage, of natural causes; survivors include his wife, Lynda; a son, Eugene of Osage; a daughter, Audrey Benson of Rudd; and two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; he was preceded in death by four brothers; and five sisters; services will be 2 p.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church, south of Osage, with burial in Calvary Cemetery, rural Osage; friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Champion Funeral Home, Osage, and for an hour before services Monday at the church; Mr. Troge was a farmer.

Workman, 69, of rural Quasqueton, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, after a lengthy illness; survivors include her husband, Archie; three daughters, Brenda Irvine of Stanley and Wendy Merck and Candy Rude, both of Thief River Falls, Minn.; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild; two sisters, Geraldine Lesline and Betty Dyer, both of Dubuque; and a brother, Jimmy Postel of Postville; memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Reiff Funeral Home, Quasqueton; friends may call for an hour before services Saturday at the funeral home.
