LA PORTE CITY-- Erma D. Feller, 97, formerly of La Porte City, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at Denver Sunset Home, Denver, from complications of a stroke.
She was born Feb. 9, 1902, near Keystone, daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Jungclaus Gein. She married Cecil A. Feller on Dec. 20, 1922. He died Feb. 13, 1983.
Survived by: a son, Duane of Denver; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Henrietta Robb of Fort Collins, Colo.
Preceded in death by: a son, Lee; a brother, Merle Gein; and two sisters, Amanda Thomas and Lavanda Gein.
Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday at American Lutheran Church, La Porte City, with burial in Dysart Cemetery, Dysart. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Huisman Funeral Home and for an hour before services Wednesday at the church.

LA PORTE CITY -- Harold H. Pries, 73, of 1112 Jackson St., died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, of cancer.
He was born Sept. 9, 1926, in Tripoli, son of Herman and Christina Schellhorn Pries. He married Netha M. Friedly on July 24, 1948, in Waterloo.
Mr. Pries was a heavy equipment operator and welder, retiring in 1988. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Survived by: his wife; three sons, Hal, Arnold and Ronald, all of La Porte City; two daughters, Chris Logan and Colleen Paradine, both of La Porte City; and seven grandchildren and a great-grandson.
Preceded in death by: a brother, Wilbur; and two sisters, Bernice Christopher and Renetta Grosskrevtz.
Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, with burial in West View Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by La Porte City American Legion San Diego Post 207. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Huisman Funeral Home and for an hour before services Monday at the church.

WATERLOO -- Blytha Howrey Mills, 88, of the Cedar Falls Western Home, formerly of 524 Ardmore St., died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at the home of natural causes.
She was born April 15, 1911, in La Porte City, daughter of Abran J. and Kathryn Fry Howrey. She married Lloyd L. Mills Nov. 17, 1927, in Waterloo. He died Aug. 26, 1992.
Mrs. Mills was a nurse's aide at Miller Rest Home for 20 years before retiring.
Survived by: five sons, James of Summit, Miss., Clifford of Conway, Ark., Marlin of Parkersburg, Thomas of Wellton, Ariz., and Robert of Cedar Falls; three daughters, Patricia Wagner of Denver, Lynda Sondag of Cedar Falls and Joy Waddell of Waverly; and 50 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: two brothers, Clyde and Gerald Howrey; three sisters, Beth Hoel, Evelyn Chapman and Gazelle Howrey.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, with a 3 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service. JANESVILLE -- Gladys M. Plantz, 74, of Lake Kabetogama, Minn., and Scottsdale, Ariz., formerly of Janesville, died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth, Minn., of natural causes.
She was born Dec. 19, 1924, in Janesville, daughter of Charles and Sina Iverson McMullen. She married John W. Plantz on Dec. 11, 1942, in Kirksville, Mo. He died in 1994.
Mrs. Plantz and her husband operated the Harmony Beach Resort, Ray, Minn., for 20 years, retiring in 1974.
Survived by: a son, Thomas of Baton Rouge, La.; a daughter, Rhonda Rhoades of Refugio, Texas; and a granddaughter.
Preceded in death by: two brothers, Arthur and Vernon McMullen.

LA PORTE CITY-- Betty Thompson, 77, of La Porte City, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at home of cancer.
She was born Oct. 26, 1921, in Waterloo, daughter of Frances and Elizabeth Siebold Cotter. She married Tom Thompson on June 3, 1947, in Davenport.
Mrs. Thompson worked at the Mental Health Institute, Independence, and was a saleswoman for Avon. She attended Iowa State University, Ames, and Iowa State Teacher's College, Cedar Falls.
Survived by: her husband; three sons, Ronald of La Porte City, Bart of Waterloo and Bret of Columbus, Neb.; two daughters, Linda Cocchi of Las Vegas and Barbara Rice of Waterloo; and nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Washburn, with inurnment in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery, Waterloo, at a later date. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball, Waterloo.

WATERLOO -- Eleanor R. Scharnhorst, 71, of 1547 Bertch Ave., died Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, at Covenant Medical Center of natural causes.
She was born Aug. 12, 1928, in Waverly, daughter of Matthew and Gertrude Miller Huber. She married Wilbert Scharnhorst on Oct. 9, 1949, in Waverly.
Survived by: her husband; a son, Gary of Hudson; a daughter, Sandy Scharnhorst Boss of Waterloo; and six grandchildren.

CEDAR FALLS -- James W. Dennis, 80, of 5018 S. Main Street Road, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, at Sartori Memorial Hospital of natural causes
He was born Aug. 15, 1919, in South Bend, Ind., son of Charles W. and Hazel K. Hahn Dennis. He married Myrtle Catherine Robinson on Aug. 24, 1958, in Chicago. She died Nov. 3, 1985.
Mr. Dennis received his bachelor's degree from Lake Forest College, Chicago, and retired in 1981 from Viking Pump Co. as an engineer.
Survived by: a son, Paul W. of Washington, Mich.; a daughter, Linda D. Chinn of Honolulu; and three grandchildren.
Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday at Richardson Funeral Home, with burial in Ridgemont Cemetery, Des Plaines, Ill. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with family present from 5 to 7 p.m.

CEDAR FALLS -- Donald C. Griffen, 74, of Cedar Falls, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, at home of cancer.
He was born July 10, 1925, in Philadelphia, Pa., son of Ira P. and Gladys E. Dudgeon Griffen. He married Janet F. Gould on Sept. 12, 1947, in Ames.
Mr. Griffen received his bachelor's degree from Iowa State University in 1949 and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a salesman for many years for Cadillac dealerships in Waterloo, including Morris, Scriber, Tate and Reed. For the past 16 years he had been a court attendant for the state of Iowa.
Survived by: his wife; two sons, Gary of Bellingham, Wash., and Scott of Cedar Falls; four grandsons; and two half brothers, Dana of Provo, Utah, and Toby of Springfield, Ill.
Visitation: 1 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Richardson Funeral Home, with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Private family burial will be Thursday in Greenwood Cemetery.

CEDAR FALLS -- Zona Hixon, 96, of the Western Home, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, at the home of natural causes.
She was born Aug. 17, 1903, in Center Point, daughter of John T. and Ora M. Lindsey Allensworth. She married the Rev. William H. Hixon on Nov. 30, 1922, in Chicago. He died July 8, 1983.
Survived by: a son, John F. of Cedar Falls; a sister, Maude Jones of West Palm Beach, Fla.; three stepgrandchildren and a stepgreat-grandchild.
Preceded in death by: two sisters, Jessie Flake and Zelma Fee.
Family directed memorial services: 11 a.m. Thursday at Church of Christ, with inurnment in Center Point Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Richardson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
WATERLOO -- Marie V. Griefnow, 88, of Waterloo, died Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, at Allen Hospital of natural causes.
She was born Feb. 6, 1911, in Clayton County, daughter of Godfred and Theresa Eilers Kann. She married William Griefnow in Dubuque and he preceded her in death.
Mrs. Griefnow retied from Freeman's Cafe as a cook.
Survived by: nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by: two brothers, Herbert and Alfred Kann; and two sisters, Melinda Vogt and Lottie Robbins.
Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with burial in Garden of Memories. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Chapel of Memories-West Family Funeral Care, where there will be a 7 p.m. Scripture service. Visitation also for an hour before services Tuesday at the church.

WATERLOO -- Steven C. Lantz, 51, of Waterloo, died Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, at Allen Hospital; cause of death pending autopsy results.
He was born Oct. 30, 1948, in Waverly, the son of Delbert and Amylou White Lantz. He married Arletta K. Toepfer Dec. 29, 1973, in Waterloo.
He was a truck driver at Black Hawk Waste Disposal.
Survived by: his wife; two sons, Adam and Amos, both of Waterloo; two daughters, Rhonda Gates and Tara Lantz, both of Waterloo; four grandchildren; two brothers, Glen Lantz of Marion, Ill., and Terry Lantz of Waterloo; and a sister, Susan Lantz of Waterloo.
Preceded in death by: his parents.
