John Joseph Kehoe, 87, of 1952 W. Sixth St., died Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, at Allen Hospital after suffering a heart attack on Thursday, Nov. 11. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Edward's Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 3 p.m. Catholic Order of Foresters rosary and a 7 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary, with a church vigil immediately following.
John was born Feb. 10, 1912, in Farley, first-born son of Joseph W. Kehoe and Rose E. Schwendinger Kehoe. His family farmed in the Farley area before moving to Waterloo in 1928. John interrupted his education to help support his family. He returned to finish his education, graduating at the age of 22. Sports were a big part of John's life even at a young age. As a student at St. Mary's High School, Waterloo, John initiated the football program. He procured uniforms from the University of Iowa for the new football team. John was a loyal fan of the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.
John married Eunice C. Connell on Jan. 30, 1937, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Waterloo. The two met while at a dance at Our Lady of Victory Academy (OLVA). Although John had been recruited by a Triple A baseball scout, he instead chose to marry Eunice, a decision he noted was the wisest of his life. Both the oldest of nine children, they had nine children of their own. Survived by his wife, Eunice; five sons, Jerome E. and Pauline, of Olympia, Wash., Joseph T. and Catherine of Las Vegas, and John P. and Nancy, Justin R. (Dusty) and Rita, and James L., all of Waterloo; four daughters, Margaret R. (Peggy) and Dr. Michel Saad of San Jose, Calif., Monica M. and James Artes of Decorah, Melanie P. and Jeffrey Jensen of Gilbert, Ariz., and Carmen E. and Mark Skyles of Waterloo; 22 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ione Bernardy of Council Bluffs and Sister Donalda Kehoe OSF of Dubuque. Preceded in death by five brothers, Larry, Charles, James, Donald and Joseph; and a sister, Evelyn Junk.
Mr. Kehoe was co-owner of the Kehoe & Connell Food Market with his brother-in-law, Joseph Connell, from 1937 to 1946. Later known as Kehoe Food Market, he was sole proprietor until 1970. He was proprietor and co-owner of the Waterloo Bowl Inn from 1953 to 1963, and proprietor and co-owner of Electric Park Lanes, retiring from the bowling business in 1976. An avid bowler and an inductee in the Waterloo Hall of Fame, he is credited with many innovative advances in the Iowa bowling arena.
John and Eunice started J and J Tackles as a post-retirement hobby in the basement of their home. This hobby became a successful business. John loved to test market new products in his custom tackle line. He enjoyed fishing excursions with his wife, son and grandchildren.
A devoted Catholic, John was a Knight of Columbus for approximately 50 years, and a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters for 63 years, and rarely missed celebrating daily Mass.
He will be sadly missed by family and friends.
