INDEPENDENCE -- Clarence F. Jacobsen, 89, of Independence, died Sunday, April 23, 2000, at Peoples Memorial Hospital, Independence, following a brief illness; survivors include a son, Wayne of San Jose, Calif.; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Viola Kennett and Elise Knaak, both of Vinton; he was preceded in death by his wife, Lola, in 1999; a son, Warren; a brother, Merle; and four sisters, Rita Raymond, Luella Biram, Esther Lieb and Pearl Butts; services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Reiff Funeral Home, Independence, with burial in Oakwood Cemetery, Shellsburg; friends may call from 10 a.m. until services Wednesday at the funeral home.

TOLEDO -- Dorothy F. Smith, 82, of Toledo, died Sunday, April 23, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center, Des Moines, of a heart ailment; survivors include a son, Stanley of Angleton, Texas; a daughter, Colleen Brommel of Des Moines; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild; a brother, Roy Eugene Obee of Burns, Kan.; and a sister, Ruth E. Ott of Gypsum, Kan.; she was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse, on May 10, 1988; and two brothers; graveside services will be 1 p.m. Thursday in Woodlawn Cemetery, Toledo; there will be no visitation; Henderson-Overton Funeral Home, Toledo, is in charge of arrangements; a memorial fund has been established; Mrs. Smith retired as head seamstress at the Iowa Juvenile Home, Toledo.

DECORAH -- Dale A. "Gramps" Leibold, 46, of Decorah, died Sunday, April 23, 2000, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, Wis., of cancer; survivors include his mother, Marlis Zwiebohmer of Decorah; two brothers, Bruce of Decorah and Richard of Onalaska, Wis.; and two sisters, Diane Leibold of Geneva and Mabel Foster of Austin, Minn.; services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church, Decorah, with burial and military rites in Lutheran Cemetery; friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Fjelstul Funeral Home, Decorah, with a 6:30 p.m. Veterans of Foreign Wars memorial service; visitation also for an hour before services Wednesday at the church.

CONRAD -- Charlotte A. Demmon, 68, of Ottumwa, formerly of Conrad, died Sunday, April 23, 2000, of cardiac arrest; survivors include two sons, James R. of Ottumwa and Wesley L. of Dewitt; a daughter, Jennifer J. Lucas of Des Moines; five grandchildren; and a brother, Robert N. Coulter of Conrad; she was preceded in death by a sister; services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Conrad United Methodist Church, with burial in Conrad Cemetery; friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Johnston Funeral Home, Conrad, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m.; a memorial fund is being established; Mrs. Demmon was a patient relations coordinator at Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center.

CRESCO -- Marie V. "Dolly" Erickson, 88, of Cresco, died Sunday, April 23, 2000, at the Cresco Care Center of natural causes; survivors include two sons, Loel of Rochester, Minn., and Wayne of Cresco; a daughter, Shirley Stender of Rochester; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Isabelle Chevalier of Johnston; she was preceded in death by her husband, Russell, on Nov. 20, 1989; a great-grandson; five brothers, Miles, Thomas, Lawrence, Richard and John Henry; and a sister, Ellen Gossman; services will be noon Wednesday at Assumption Worship Center, with burial in Calvary Cemetery, both in Cresco; friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Conway Funeral Home, Cresco, where there will be a 7 p.m. Scripture service; visitation also for an hour before services Wednesday at the church.

IWAVERLY -- Edward Bunger Jr., 77, of Waverly, died Monday, April 24, 2000, at home after a lengthy illness; survivors include his wife, Estel; two brothers, Ray of Storm Lake and Burton of Cudahy, Wis.; and a sister, Florence Strom of Traverse City, Mich.; he was preceded in death by four brothers, Milton, Bill, Kenneth and Larry; services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Waverly, with burial in the church cemetery; graveside military rites will be conducted by AMVETS Post 79; friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly, and for an hour before services Thursday at the church; memorials may be directed to the charity of donor's choice; Mr. Bunger was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in the South Pacific Theater, in Guam and Okinawa; he also served with the occupational troops in Peiping, China; he graduated from Wartburg College in 1951 and worked as an office manager for the company that built the air base in Waverly; in 1951 he began employment with Mid Continent Petroleum Co. (now Sun Co.), Waterloo, where he worked for more than 31 years, the last 13 in St. Louis, Mo., retiring in 1983; he was a national charter member of the AMVETS and past commander of AMVETS Post 79 of Waverly.

CHARLES CITY -- Morris W. Thelen, 79, of Charles City, died Saturday, April 22, 2000, at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City, of natural causes; he is survived by a brother, Charles Williard "Til" of Fort Worth, Texas; he was preceded in death by five brothers, Eldon, Jim, Almon "Ski," Ward and Dale; memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hauser Funeral Home, with burial in Riverside Cemetery, both in Charles City; graveside flag presentation will be conducted by Charles City Ceremonial Unit; friends may call for an hour before services Wednesday at the funeral home; memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa, Charles City site; Mr. Thelen served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II; he was a supervisor in the engineering department at Oliver and White Farm Equipment Corp., retiring in 1985.

INDEPENDENCE -- Opal L. Kolp, 90, of Independence, died Sunday, April 23, 2000, at East Towne Care Center, Independence, after a brief illness; survivors include a daughter, Darlene Lorenz of Independence; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Neva Hoffner of Clarence; services were 11 a.m. today at White Funeral Home, with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery, both in Independence.

WATERLOO -- Janet E. Leckness, 62, of 1410 Dunkerton Road, died Monday, April 24, 2000, at Covenant Medical Center of cancer; services pending with Locke Funeral Home, 233-6138.

DUNKERTON -- Thomas B. Gray, 56, of 1003 Jolene Drive, died Monday, April 24, 2000, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, of cancer; services 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Reformed Church, Evansdale, with burial in Garden of Memories, Waterloo; visitation 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, Waterloo, 233-3393.

WATERLOO -- Sandra Blankenship, 42, of Tacoma, Wash., formerly of Waterloo, died Saturday, April 22, 2000, of natural causes; memorial services 1 p.m. Wednesday at Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery chapel; no visitation, her body was cremated; memorials to the family; information courtesy of Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel-downtown, 234-5779.

WATERLOO -- Ida Wilke, 88, of California, formerly of Waterloo and Cedar Falls, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2000, in La Mesa, Calif., of natural causes; memorial services 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Nazareth Lutheran Church, Cedar Fall; memorials to the church or to Christian Crusaders.

CEDAR FALLS -- Irene Louise Montz, 81, of Cedar Falls, died Sunday, April 23, 2000, at the Lutheran Home of natural causes; services 11 a.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, with burial in East Side Cemetery, both in Estherville; visitation an hour before services Wednesday at the church; Richardson Funeral Home, 266-3525, is in charge of arrangements; memorials to Endowment for Youth at the church in Estherville.

LA PORTE CITY -- Vivian M. Weber, 74, of 7030 Rickard Road, died Monday, April 24, 2000, at Allen Hospital, Waterloo, of an apparent heart attack; services 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, both in Gilbertville; visitation from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, Waterloo, 234-6274, where there will be a 3 p.m. senior citizens rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service; visitation also for an hour before services Friday at the church; memorials to the church or to Don Bosco High School.

ALTA VISTA -- Cyril Reicks, 71, of Alta Vista, died Saturday, April 22, 2000, at Finley Hospital, Dubuque, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident; services 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery, both in Alta Vista; visitation 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Conway Funeral Home, Elma, (515) 393-2461, where there will be a 4 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary and a 7 p.m. Scripture service; visitation also for an hour before services Thursday at the church.

NEW HAMPTON -- Frank Rochford, 94, of Des Moines, formerly of New Hampton, died Monday, April 24, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center, Des Moines, of natural causes; services 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, with burial in the church cemetery; visitation Wednesday at Larkin-Martin-Hugeback Funeral Home, New Hampton, (515) 394-4334.

VINTON -- Betty Keefer, 76, of Vinton, died Monday, April 24, 2000, at Sunnycrest Nursing Home, Dysart, after a brief illness; services pending with Overton-Van Steenhuyse Funeral Home, Vinton, (319) 472-2223.

READLYN -- Martha A. Nolte, 80, of Readlyn, died today, April 25, 2000, at Waverly Municipal Hospital of cancer; graveside services 10 a.m. Thursday at Harlington Cemetery, Waverly, followed by an 11 a.m. memorial service at Zion Lutheran Church, Readlyn; visitation noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly, (319) 352-1187; memorials to the family.
