WATERLOO -- Roger Dennis Knudsen, 52, of Waterloo, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at Allen Hospital of cancer; services 1:30 p.m. today at Orchard Hill Reformed Church, with burial in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery; Richardson Funeral Home, Cedar Falls, 266-3525, is in charge of arrangements; memorials to the church or Cedar Valley Hospice.

LA PORTE CITY -- Mayme C. Gill, 94, formerly of 603 Main St., died today, Oct. 6, 1999, at La Porte City Nursing & Rehab Center of natural causes; services tentatively planned for Saturday morning at Sacred Heart Church, with burial in West View Cemetery, both in La Porte City; visitation Friday evening at Huisman Funeral Home, La Porte City, 342-3131.

SUMNER -- Wayne Ridge, 82, of Sumner, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at the Hillcrest Home, Sumner, of natural causes; services pending with Becker-Milnes Funeral Home, Sumner, (319) 427-3244.

HAMPTON -- Robert W. Ward, 80, of Hampton, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at Franklin General Hospital, Hampton, of natural causes; services pending with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton, (515) 456-3232.

READLYN -- Esther Strottmann, 86, of Readlyn, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at home of natural causes; services pending with Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Readlyn, (319) 279-3551.

CLARKSVILLE -- Andrew Hesse, 91, formerly of Clarksville, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City, of natural causes; services 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Church of Christ, Clarksville, with burial in Lynwood Cemetery, both in Clarksville; visitation 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Schwartz Funeral Home, Clarksville, (319) 278-4245.

HAMPTON -- Flossie M. Windelow, 90, of Hampton, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at Franklin General Hospital, Hampton, of natural causes; services 1 p.m. Saturday at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton, (515) 456-3232, with inurnment in Hampton Cemetery; no visitation.

RICEVILLE -- Norman Joel Chase, 60, of Riceville, formerly of Mason City, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, at home after a lengthy illness; survivors include his wife, Leota; a son, Jeffrey of Glen Burnie, Md.; two daughters, Mary Anderson and Diane Chase, both of Oskaloosa; four grandchildren; and a sister, Pamela Loeckle of Mason City; he was preceded in death by two brothers; memorial services were 11 a.m. today at Lindstrom Funeral Home, Riceville, with inurnment at a later date; Mr. Chase was a member of the Iowa National Guard and was a firefighter with the Mason City Fire Department for 30 years.

OELWEIN -- Elsa E. Venter Downs, 93, of Oelwein, died Monday, Nov. 15, 1999, at Grandview Care Center, Oelwein, after a brief illness; survivors include two sons, Richard Venter of Oskaloosa and Wayne Venter of Monona; and five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, four stepgreat-grandchildren and three stepgreat-great-grandchildren; she was preceded in death by her husbands, Ernst Venter and Ross Downs; a brother, Herman Schoenberg; and two sisters, Emma Neubauer and Anna Hansen; services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church, with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery, both in Oelwein; friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hintz-Geilenfeld Funeral Home, Oelwein, and for an hour before services Thursday at the church; Mrs. Downs worked as a secretary for Iowa Motor, Oelwein, for more than 29 years.

CRESCO -- Georgene A. Foley, 88, of Cresco, died Monday, Nov. 15, 1999, at Patty Elwood Center/Howard Residential Care Facility, Cresco, of natural causes; survivors include a son, Dr. Donald Foley of Cresco; two daughters, Elvira Shaver of Cresco and Garnita Wencl of Minneapolis; and nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; she was preceded in death by her husband, William, on Nov. 8, 1992; three sisters, Zephie Jirak, Wilma Meyer and Clara Wanger; and a brother, William Koshatka; services were noon today at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, with burial in Calvary Cemetery, both in Cresco; Conway Funeral Home, Cresco, was in charge of arrangements.

CLARKSVILLE -- Mervin Darby, 92, of Clarksville, died Monday, Nov. 15, 1999, at Waverly Municipal Hospital, Waverly, of natural causes; survivors include his wife, Olive; two sons, Jim of Spooner, Wis., and Steve of Boone; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Irene Oakley and Lucille Froberg, both of Rockford, Ill.; he was preceded in death by a son, Richard; three brothers; and five sisters; services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City, with burial in Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville; friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, where there will be a 7 p.m. prayer service; visitation also from 9 a.m. until services Thursday; Mr. Darby farmed until his retirement.

HAMPTON -- Lawrence William Hamilton, 85, of Hampton, died Monday, Nov. 15, 1999, at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, Iowa Falls, of natural causes; survivors include his wife, Leah; four sons, Larry of Cedar Falls, Jay of Iowa Falls, John of Hampton and Steven of Laramie, Wyo.; a daughter, Ardith Kirchhoff of Columbia, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; a sister, Lucille Claassen Wellsburg; and a stepsister, Betty Bryan of McAllen, Texas; he was preceded in death by three sisters; an infant brother; a stepbrother; and a grandson; services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Morgan United Methodist Church, rural Dows, with burial in Maynes Grove Cemetery, rural Bradford; friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton; Mr. Hamilton attended Ellsworth College, Iowa Falls, then Iowa State College, Ames; he farmed and was a charter member of the Cyclone Wrestling Club.

CHARLES CITY -- Betty E. Meyer, 74, formerly of Charles City, died Monday, Nov. 15, 1999, Nora Springs Care Center, Nora Springs, from complications of Alzheimer's disease; survivors include a son, David of Charles City; a daughter, Sarah Schuchhardt of Crystal Lake; four grandchildren; and two sisters, Norma Wahl of New Hampton and Marjorie Heitmann of Frederic, Wis.; she was preceded in death by her husband, Emmett, on June 3, 1989; a grandson; three brothers, Art, Eugene and Dean Nicholson; and two sisters, Ruth Wedeking and Dorothy Bonwell; services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at First Congregational Church, Charles City, with burial in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City; friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Sunnyside Chapel, rural Charles City, and for an hour before services Thursday at the church; memorials may be directed to the family; Mrs. Meyer worked at Trowbridges, Charles City, from 1946 to 1956 and at the Charles City Press from 1969 to 1987.

SHELL ROCK -- Jerry Hartema, 84, of Shell Rock, formerly of Clarksville, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, at Clarksville Community Nursing Home of natural causes; survivors include his wife, Evelyn; four daughters, Donna Wilken of Plainfield, Carol Keller of Cedar Falls, Ardith Voigts of Clarksville and Sharon Niehaus of Greene; two sons, Marvin of Cedar Falls and Ronald of Bloomington, Ill.; 14 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; and five sisters, Jennie Bertram of Parkersburg, Marian McNeilus of Waverly, Esther Niemann and Annetta Fleshner, both of Shell Rock, and Lorena Gould of Goleta, Calif.; he was preceded in death by three brothers, Melvin, Herman and Edward; and four sisters, Beulah Lindeman, Hattie Fleshner, Catherine Cuvelier, and an infant, Audrey Hartema; services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church, with burial in Lynwood Cemetery, both in Clarksville; friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Shell Rock, with family present from 2 to 5 p.m.; Mr. Hartema farmed in the Clarksville and Shell Rock area, retiring in 1989.

Barnes, 82, of Cedar Falls, died Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home of natural causes; services 10:30 a.m. Friday at Cedar Bible Church, with burial in Hillside Cemetery; visitation 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Richardson Funeral Home, 266-3525, and for an hour before services Friday at the church.

WATERLOO -- Elmer Janssen, 71, of 1828 E. Mitchell Ave., formerly of Nashua, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, at Sartori Memorial Hospital, Cedar Falls, of cardiac arrest; services 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Charles City, with burial in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City; visitation 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City, where there will be a 7 p.m. prayer service; visitation also for an hour before services Friday at the church.

WATERLOO -- Constance Ann Voellinger, 98, formerly of Waterloo, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Center, Mason City, of natural causes; services 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in Calvary Cemetery; visitation 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, 234-6274, with a 7 p.m. vigil service; memorials to the church.

WATERLOO -- Gregory Stuart Smith, 52, formerly of Waterloo, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999, in Indianapolis of natural causes; memorial graveside services were Oct. 25 at Greenmount Cemetery, Durango, Colo.; memorials may be directed to Carolyn Smith, 11315 Crestview St., Flagstaff, AZ 86004.
