ACKLEY -- Louis Albert Henry Betten, 82, of Truth or Consequences, N.M., formerly of the Aplington-Ackley area, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at home of natural causes; survivors include a daughter, Ramona Jorgensen of Preston, Idaho; two sons, Clifford of Roy, Utah, and Darwin of DuBois, Idaho; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; and a brother, John "Jack" of Ackley; he was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie; and a great-grandchild; services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Brandt-Fritz Funeral Home, with burial in West Friesland Cemetery, both in Ackley; full military rites will be conducted by Elliot-Kenninger American Legion Post 252 of Ackley; friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home; Mr. Betten was a U.S. Navy veteran; he farmed around the Aplington area, and in 1952 moved to Utah where he worked in maintenance at Hill Field Air Force Base in Layton.
IOWA FALLS -- Geraldine Maas, 88, of Iowa Falls, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, Iowa Falls, of natural causes; survivors include her husband, Burdis S.; two daughters, Cheryl Tordoff of Alden and Diane Weisenberger of Topeka, Kan.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lois Hansen and Maxine Sharar, both of Iowa Falls; she was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles, Burnell and Quinton Stowe; services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Christian Church, with burial in Union Cemetery, both in Iowa Falls; friends may call until 8 p.m. today at Linn's Funeral Home, Iowa Falls, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m.; Mrs. Maas was employed at the Newberry 5 & 10 Cent Store from 1929-32, and farmed with her husband in the Hubbard and later Iowa Falls area, retiring in 1975; she was past matron of the Order of Eastern Star No. 346 of Iowa Falls.

NASHUA -- Donald Keith Matthews, 63, of Clinton, Tenn., formerly of Nashua, died Thursday, April 20, 2000, at home of cancer; survivors include his wife, Karen; three sons, Barry of Ionia, Andy of Nashua and Rusty of Des Moines; a daughter, Renae Shoars of Nashua; a stepson, Drew Peterson of Clinton; a stepdaughter, Tammy Merwin of Clinton; eight grandchildren; a sister, Noriene North of Charles City; and a brother, Gary of Charles City; he was preceded in death by an infant grandson; memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Messiah Lutheran Church, Charles City; Mr. Matthews served in the U.S. Air Force as a crew chief on the U-2 spy plane; he worked as a tool and die maker at Oliver Corp., White Farm Equipment, H&H Machine & Tool in Cedar Falls and Traer Manufacturing in Traer, then was transferred to Eagle Bend Manufacturing, Clinton; for the past few years he was employed by Axis Fabrication & Machine Co., Louisville, Tenn.
READLYN -- Martha Nolte, 80, of Readlyn, died Tuesday, April 25, 2000, at Waverly Municipal Hospital, Waverly, of cancer; survivors include two daughters, Grace Kuethe of Readlyn and Jeanette Iverson of Waverly; six grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; and five sisters, Erna Bublitz of Mason City, Liz Buhr of Sumner, Malinda Applegate of California, Hulda Poorman of Sun City, Ariz., and Anetta Graening of Waverly; she was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar, on June 16, 1977; four brothers, Ernest, Gustav, Richard and Walter Jaschen; and a sister, Bertha Tims; public graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Harlington Cemetery, Waverly, followed by an 11 a.m. public memorial service at Zion Lutheran Church, Readlyn; friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly; memorials may be directed to the family; Mrs. Nolte worked for Carnation Co. for a while.
