Fred Snider
Fred H. Snider, 76, passed away Monday, July 26, 2004 at the USA Healthcare Center in Urbandale. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 29 at the West Des Moines Christian Church.
Fred was employed by Central National Bank for 39 years. He was a member of the West Des Moines Christian Church, American Institute of Banking, Za Ga Zig Shrine and the Homelodge (Masons).
He is survived by his loving wife, Jean; son, Kile (Laura) Snider of Fort Collins, CO; daughter, Lora Childers of Des Moines; and four grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Iowa Heart Association.
Genevieve Allen
Jenny Allen was taken by her Lord on Sunday afternoon, July 11, 2004 at Taylor House Hospice.
Genevieve was born in Wall Lake, Iowa on December 19, 1925 to Frank and Etta Allen. She lived in Carroll, Iowa for a time before moving to Des Moines. She was a patient transporter in the radiology department of Mercy Hospital. She retired from Mercy Hospital in October of 1994 after 41 years of service.
She lived in Mercy Park Apartments for several years before making her home with her niece, Sharon Vasquez. She was at Trinity Lutheran Park Care Center before being transferred to Taylor House Hospice.
She is survived by her sister, Bernice Jackson of Centralia, Washington, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Etta Allen; brothers, Edward and Russell Allen; and sisters, Colleen Schmidt and Ruth Tomberlin.
The body was cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Evelyn Meyers
Funeral services for Evelyn Meyers, who entered her eternal life August 30, 2004, will be held 10 a.m., Saturday, September 4 at St. Michaels Ukrainian Church in Hammond, Indiana.
Evelyn will be missed by her daughter, Dorothy (Edward) Wilson; her grandchildren Mark (Kim) Wilson, Julie Ann (Richard) Thompson, and Steve Campbell; her great grandchildren, Leslie, Ryan, Isaac, Aaron, and Graham; and sister Mary Gbur.
Evelyn is reunited in Eternal Life with her husband Edward and her granddaughter, Michelle.

Delores Viola
Delores (Dee) Viola died peacefully on Tuesday, June 15. Survivors include a son, Frank; two daughters, Theresa Viola and Mari Viola; a brother, Joseph Fazio; 4 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
She was a member of Christ the King Altar and Rosary Society, Society of Italian Americans, Catholic Women and Catholic Daughters, Bellizzi MaCrae American Legion Ladies Auxillary and The Italian Cultural Center.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 AM Friday at Christ the King Catholic Church. Visitation is 2 to 9 Thursday with a 7 PM Rosary at Brooks Funeral Care Tonini Chapel.

Dale A. Steiger
Dale A. Steiger of Rye, NY, succumbed to lung cancer and complications of Parkinson’s disease on January 1, 2004. He was born in La Crosse, WI on May 14, 1928, to Walter and Doris (Howa)Steiger and married Alice (Dyrdahl) on October 8, 1949. Dale is survived by daughters, Christine (Anthony) Falco of Harrison, NY, and Marta Steiger of Bronxville, NY; and a brother, Jacob Steiger of Black River Falls, WI.
Dale moved to Des Moines from Rye, NY in 1997 and was a member of Meredith Drive Reformed Church. He was beloved and appreciated by many church friends.
Dale was a graduate of Central High School in La Crosse, WI, The Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, Wisconsin State University of La Crosse, and attended Drake University in Des Moines, IA and Iona College in New Rochelle, NY.
In 1971, he was engaged by The Curtis Publishing Company in La Crosse and became a long term executive with LOOK Magazine in Des Moines, IA, becoming Executive Vice President for a number of LOOK Subsidiaries.
In 1972, he opened Dale Steiger Associates, a consulting company which he operated in New York until his death. During that period of time, he owned and operated one consumer and one trade publication for a number of years, later selling those publications to other owners.
He created and initiated a subscription subsidiary in Des Moines, IA titled SUBCO, Inc., operating it for the ensuing years with a long time friend and business associate, Judy LeWarne, which continues in operation today.
He received a number of recognitions and awards throughout the years, including the Lee C. Williams award for outstanding achievement in the publishing periodical field. He served on several boards including Central Registry of the United States and Canada. He was the only publishing executive to testify before the United States Senate Committee on subscription sales practices and served as an expert witness in Federal Court on the same subject at different times.
He was also founding member of the Art Directors Association of Iowa and later its president. Dale was also a member of the Cornell Club of New York, Westchester Country Club of New York and the Des Moines/Embassy Club.
He was proud to have served with the United States 1st Calvary Division in occupied Japan for a year. He was also honored by his election to “Who’s Who In America” and “Who’s Who In The World”.
Memorial services for Dale will be at Meredith Drive Reformed Church on Thursday evening, January 8 at 7 p.m. Any memorial contributions may be made in Dale’s name to his church- Meredith Drive Reformed Church, 5128 Meredith Drive, Des Moines, IA 50310. No flowers, please.
Dalia Sarmiento

Funeral services for Dalia will be held 12:00 pm, Saturday, January 31 at Faith Independent Assembly of God Church. She is survived by her mother Eufracia, Sarmiento; 2 brothers, Juan and Ricardo; and 4 sisters, Virgina Ruffin, Olga Amesquita, Angela Sarmiento, and Anna Garcia.
Duane Houk
Duane Houk, died peacefully on January 21, 2004, at Kavanagh House Hospice in Des Moines. At his request, no services are planned at this time.
Duane was born in Sibley and lived all his life in the Des Moines area. He was retired from the Des Moines Post Office. Duane was a member of the First Church of Christ. He was also a member of Scientist National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the Capitol Masonic Lodge.
Duane loved his home and family, playing golf, and doing crossword puzzles. He loved Valley Junction, Iowa and was a devoted fan of Valley High School athletics. He had the ability to strike up a conversation with strangers or friends.
Duane will be missed by his wife, Gertrude of Des Moines; son Don (Sue) Houk of Des Moines; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Nancy and son, Bill.

Benford Walker
Benford Mifflin Walker died quietly at home on January 2nd, 2004. He was 88. Benford was born January 17th, 1915, in Des Moines, Iowa to Charles Benford and Florence Cruzen Walker. In his youth he lived near Winner, South Dakota, on the site of his parents’ homestead. He graduated from Johnston High School in 1933, and from Drake University in 1943. He worked as a chemist for DuPont and the State of Iowa. For most of his life, Benford worked the Iowa land he loved, farming near Ankeny and Elkhart, Ia. He remained active on his land until late in life, and took inspiration for his own poetry and short stories from the natural beauty of the Iowa countryside.
He is survived by brothers Glen of Ankeny, Rexford of West Des Moines, a sister Charlotte Walker Smith of Hartford Iowa,and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Charles, and sisters Margaret and Alice Louise.
Visitation will be at Brooks Funeral Home, 80th and University, Des Moines, from 1-3 pm followed by a memorial service at 3 pm. Burial will be Monday at Glendale Cemetery.
Edwin Backstrom
Edwin Richard Backstrom, 78, died Friday, January 16, 2004, at his home. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, January 20 at Brooks Funeral Care – University Chapel. Burial will follow at Elkhart Cemetery in Elkhart.
Edwin was born on August 12, 1925, and lived in the Des Moines area all of his life. He operated Lee Highland radiator shop for 56 years. Edwin served on the USS Roosevelt aircraft carrier in Guadalcanal and Solomon Islands in World War II.
Edwin will be missed by his son, Steven Backstrom of Maxwell; grandson, Brian Backstrom of Anoka, MN; granddaughter, Alicia Sabers of Reno, NV; sister, Delores Mikesell of Fort Collins, CO; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Millie and son, Larry.
Visitation will be Monday, January 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Lung Association.
Dorothy McBride
Mrs. Dorothy Jean McBride, 80, died March 17, 2004 at Kavanagh House on 56th Street in Des Moines. A Memorial Mass will be held 11 a.m., Monday, March 22 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Cumming, of which she was a member.
Dorothy will be missed by her son, Mick McBride of Norwalk; daughter Beth Frascatore of Simi Valley, CA; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur McBride.

Francine A. Oatts died suddenly January 25 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Lakeland, Florida. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 31, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, of which she was a very active member.
A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, she enjoyed cooking for her family and friends. Fran lived to make other people happy.
Fran will be missed by her husband, Everett “Buzz”; son, John “Joe”; daughter-in-law, Sandy; granddaughter, Jenifer Oatts (Joe) Enke; grandson, Matthew; sister, Kathy (Joe) Cortese; brother, Michael (Kay) Marasco; and brother-in-law, Edward L. Shipley, Jr. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Margaret Marasco and a sister, Margaret A. Shipley.
Visitation will take place 2-8 p.m., Friday, January 30, at the funeral home, where a Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Family will greet friends from 5-8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.

Douglas E. Johnston
Funeral services for Douglas E. Johnston, 46, will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 24 at the Congregational Church of Baxter. Committal services will be held at Restland Cemetery.
Douglas was a member of Iowa Club Lamb Association. He lived for his daughter and he loved raising and showing sheep. Douglas worked for Hofer Farms and enjoyed NASCAR with his friends.
Douglas will be missed by his daughter, Makayla of Baxter; mother, Dorothy of Baxter; sister Debra of Baxter; brother Dan (Carlene) of Madison, WI; nieces, Raina and Neva; several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, John.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 pm, Wednesday at the home of Doug Johnston, located at 7779 N 95th Ave West in Baxter.
Memorial contributions will be used according to the wishes of the family.
