Ethel May Fry was born on May 19, 1911 at Vinton, Iowa; the daughter of John and Julia (Berry) Stevenson. She was raised and received her education in the Vinton area. On March 6, 1929, Ethel married Darrell Fry in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and they made their home their entire married life in the Vinton and Urbana area. Ethel was a homemaker and also worked at the Vinton Produce and the Canning Factory in Vinton for a time. Ethel has been a resident of the West Village Care Center in Independence since August of 2000. Because of failing health, her death came there on Monday, November 27, 2000 at the age of 89 years. In her spare time Ethel enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles and doing embroidery. She was a member of Urbana Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by parents, a daughter Helen Kramer in 1979, 2 brothers; Robert and Orie Stevenson, and 3 sisters; Edith Berger, Esther Scheib Biram Byron and one in infancy. She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Darrell, a son Bill and wife Mary of Cedar Rapids, 4 grandsons; Wayne Fry, Steve, Shane & Scott Kramer and 8 great grandchildren.
Steven Geiger

Steven Geiger was born July 21, 1946 in Vinton to Warren N. and Josephine Riley Geiger. He was raised and attended school in Vinton and he served his country in the U.S. Army. Steven worked as a painter and he enjoyed fishing, golfing, reading and having fun with friends. He was on his way home from visiting his mother and friends when he had a heart attack and his death came at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton on December 31, 2001 at the age of fifty-five years. He was preceded in death by his father and two brothers, Robert and Warren. He is survived by his mother, Josephine, of Vinton, daughter, Devon Geiger,Minneapolis, MN, special friend, Sue Michaels of Waterville, MN and several nieces and nephews.
Warren Allen Geiger
Services: Memorial services will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, September 21, 2001 at Overton-Van Steenhuyse Funeral Home in Vinton. Burial will be in the Garrison Cemetery.

Warren Allen Geiger was born on December 8, 1940 at Mt. Auburn, Iowa; the son of Warren N. and Josephine (Riley) Geiger. He attended Vinton schools and graduated from Washington High School in 1959. During high school he worked for Nelson Furniture where he learned the skill of laying carpet. Warren then owned and operated is own business in Vinton before moving to Wichita, Kansas. He also worked as a police officer in Vinton. He married Rita Lyons and they were later divorced. Warren continued working as a self-employed carpet layer in Wichita, where he was presently making his home. Warren’s death came on Tuesday, September 4, 2001 at Wesley Hospital in Wichita, KA after a short illness. He was 60 years of age. Warren was a member of the Eagles, Lions Club and a former councilman in Vinton. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was preceded in death by his father Warren N. and a brother Robert Geiger. Warren is survived by his mother Josephine of Vinton, 2 daughters; Becky Ellenbaas and Sue Smith, both of Amarillo, TX, a brother Steven Geiger of Faribault, MN and 4 grandchildren.
David L. Gosse
Services: 10:30 am on Thursday, July 12, 2001 at the Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Vinton, with burial at the Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton with Military Honors. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 pm on Wednesday at the funeral home in Vinton.

David Lee Gosse was born October 31, 1934 at Aurora, Iowa to William and Mable Koob Gosse. He grew up in Dunkerton, Iowa, and was a graduate of Dunkerton H.S. After high school, David joined the National Guard and served on active duty in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1957, stationed in Greenland. On April 25, 1959 he married Doris Leaven in Cedar Falls and in 1962 the couple moved to Vinton. For twenty-nine years David worked for the East Central Iowa REC, retiring in 1998 as a staking engineer. He was a member of the Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church and the George G. Luckey American Legion Post #57 in Vinton. An avid fisherman, David also enjoyed hunting, gardening and collecting Massey Harris tractors. He died suddenly on Monday, July 09, 2001 at the age of 66 years. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Dale Gosse Sr. Survivors include his wife of forty-two years, Doris, of Vinton, three daughters, Kathy Flaucher and husband, Mike, Kay Bloomer and husband, Matt, both of Independence, IA, Karen Uthoff and husband, Kevin, one son Jim and wife, Michele, both of Vinton, five grandsons and one grandaughter, one sister, Carol Hemsath and husband, Donald, Rowley, Ia, and many nieces and nephews.

Morris Dean Grimm was born on April 3, 1923 at Garrison, Iowa; the son of William and Fannie (Nelson) Grimm. Dean received his education at country school in Big Grove Township and then worked at various jobs in the area. On January 23, 1944, he was united in marriage to Betty Struve at her parent’s house in Vinton. They have made their home in the Vinton area all of their married life together. Dean was employed for B.L. Anderson Inc. of Cedar Rapids for over 30 years. He served as plant Forman and later Shop Superintendent. After his retirement, he and Betty enjoyed spending their time camping with their trailer at various campgrounds in the area with friends. He also ran a small engine repair shop at his home where there never seemed to be an engine that he couldn’t handle. On January 16, 2001, Dean entered St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids from complications of a stroke and his death came there on Thursday morning, January 25, 2001, at the age of 77 years. In his spare time, he enjoyed feeding the squirrels and making sign boards out of acorn shells. He was a member of the Victory Eagles Club and the Vinton Country Club. Dean was preceded in death by his parents, 5 brothers; Harold, Christian, Eli, Verl and Dale Grimm and two sisters; Edna Hupfeld and Marcia Grimm in infancy. He is survived by his wife Betty, a son Rodney Grimm & wife Kimberly of Vinton, a daughter Jackie Behounek & husband Anthony of Vinton, 4 grandchildren; Angie and Garrett Smith, Beth Short, & Jessica Gibson, 5 great grandchildren; Nicole Tuttle, Bailey Gibson, Kaitlin Gibson, Lilly Gibson & Liam Short, 3 sisters; Florence Heckt & husband Elmer of Dysart, Ruby Reeves & husband Jack and Marlys Higdon, both of Vinton.

Wayne Alvin Harwood was born on March 2, 1922, in Benton County, Iowa; the son of Earl and Eunice (Noe) Harwood. He received his education at country school and graduated from Dysart High School in the class of 1939. Wayne started farming with his father east of Dysart and in 1959 he began farming on his own. He was united in marriage to Audrey King at the E.U.B Church in Vinton on December 30, 1944 and they made their home on the farm southeast of Dysart until 1978. They moved to live in the community of Vinton where Wayne was employed by the City of Vinton, working at the power plant for the municipal utilities, retiring in 1990. Wayne suffered a severe stroke at his home this past Tuesday and was taken to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics where his death came on Friday, March 30, 2001, at the age of 79 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Vinton. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Audrey, 2 sons and their wives; Ron & Chris Harwood of Atkins, IA and Dann & Shari Harwood of Norway, a daughter and her husband, Judy & Richard Banes of Washburn, IA, 8 grandchildren; Jim Harwood, Kim Peterson, Leia McDowell, Tami Catherwood, Tim Banes, Cari Martin, Stacie Schulte, and Kristin Agnew and 14 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Shelley Junior Hay
Services: 10:30 am on Friday, February 23, 2001 at the Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson, Iowa with burial at the Jct. Township Cemetery in Grand Junction, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday at the Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home and on Wednesday at the Overton - Van Steenhusye Funeral home in Vinton, Iowa.

Shelley Junior Hay was born in Perry, Iowa on September 6, 1969, the son of Russel & Linda Crawley Hay. He was raised in Iowa but spent a portion of his high school years in Rockford, MN, where he lived with his uncle and aunt, Clarence & Connie Crawley. Shelley loved his time in Rockford and his relationship with Clarence and Connie was a bond such as one would have with their own parents. During his high school career Shelley excelled in wrestling and football, in the process he broke some records and received the “Mister Guts” award from his football coach his junior year. Recently Shelley has made his home in Vinton, Iowa and was employed by the DC Taylor Co. in Cedar Rapids. Over his lifetime he enjoyed family functions, working on cars, camping and fishing. Shelley death came at the age of 31 years at the Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids on Sunday, February 18, 2001. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers; Chester Ray Crawley, Howard Junior Hay & Lee Hazelton Kinsey. Shelley memory will be cherished by his mother & step-father; Linda & Rex Kinsey of Lincoln, NE, father Russel Junior Hay of Montieth, Iowa, a brother; Russel Ryan Hay & family of Cheyenne, WY, a sister; Annette Michelle Pladsen & family of Garrison, 2 step brothers; Craig Allan Kinsey, Rex Richard Kinsey and their families of Jefferson, IA, grandmothers; Lavona Crawley, Elda Hay both of Panora, IA, Gwen Craven of Boone, IA, a great grandmother; Mable Harris of Panora, a step-daughter; Cynthia Lou Fowler, step-son; Nick Fowler both of Vinton, and 2 very special people, Tina Fowler and Chris Hendryx both of Vinton. Shelley is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Dorothy Henkle
Services: 10:30 am on Saturday, January 5, 2002 at the Presbyterian Church in Vinton, with burial at the Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Friday at the funeral home in Vinton.

Dorothy Irene Burns was born October 2, 1912 at Van Horne, IA, to Henry and Effie Glick Burns. She was raised in Van Horne and after graduating from the Van Horne high school, attended Coe College. Dorothy worked as a telephone operator in Van Horne and on June 20, 1934 she married Laurence "Dutch" Henkle in Van Horne. The couple moved to Vinton where they owned and operated Henkle's Skelly Station. Dorothy was a longtime member of the Presbyterian Church in Vinton where she was active in the choir and the sewing circle. She was also a member of the Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, "Dutch" in 1988, one son, Larry Dean Henkle, one sister, Mildred Burns and two sons-in-law, Dallas Kaestner and Duane Gustafson. Survivors include her two daughters, Janet Gustafson of Williamsburg, IA and Jean Rasmussen and husband, Tom, of Waverly, IA, sister-in-law, Blanche Henkel, Vinton, IA, eleven grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Delores "Dee"Marie Hensing

Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 09, 2001 from 4:00-8:00 pm at Overton-Van Steenhuyse Funeral Home in Vinton. Private family burial will be held at Evergreen Cemetery.

Delores Marie Hensing was born on January 5, 1933, in Red Willow County, Nebraska; the daughter of Ivel W. and Ella Anna (Fossen) Miller. Dee, as known to family and friends, moved with her family to Iowa, where she attended Stanley Consolidated School and graduated from Oelwein High School. Dee continued her education, receiving a two-year teaching certificate at Upper Iowa University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Iowa. On July 24, 1954, Dee was married to Dale Hensing in Vinton. Dee taught school for a time before staying home to raise their children. They made their home on the Hensing family farm outside of Vinton, farming together for over 40 years. More recently they have made their home in the town of Vinton. Dee was an active member of the Presbyterian Church in Vinton, serving as an Elder and Sunday school teacher. She was a member of PEO, the Early Arts Study Club and the Benton County Historical Society. Dee played an instrumental role in preserving the Horridge House, a historical site in Vinton. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening, cooking and interior decorating. Dee had a continual thirst for knowledge and remained a teacher at heart throughout her life, sharing that knowledge with family, friends and others. Most recently, she became an Iowa Master Gardener. Dee and Dale enjoyed traveling the United States and around the world, often involving Elder Hostel Programs. They served as International Members of a traveling club, opening their home to worldwide travelers who stayed with them often. Dee enjoyed the time spent together with her family and loved planning parties for her grandchildren. Dee was a patient at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids where her death came on Tuesday, August 7, 2001, due to complications from surgery. She was 68 years old. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Bernita Reid. Dee is survived by her husband, Dale, three daughters and their husbands; Kay and Carl Sansone of Davenport, Julie and Jim Johnson of Cedar Rapids, & Jane and Brad Knudson of Waverly; five grandchildren, and a sister, Arlene Fetkether of Waterloo.
