Everett Bloyer
Everett D. Bloyer, age 84, of Arthur, Iowa died Tuesday, November 25, 2003 at the Odebolt Nursing and Rehab Center in Odebolt, Iowa.
Funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 28, 2003 at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Odebolt. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Schaller with military rites by the Schaller V.F. W. Post 4704. Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Odebolt is in charge of the arrangements.
Friends may call at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Odebolt on Thursday, November 27, 2003 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., where the family will be present. There will be a vigil service at 7:30 p.m.
Everett Bloyer was born on October 6, 1919 in Schaller, Iowa, to Guy and Marie (Corderman) Bloyer. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith and was a member at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Schaller until he moved, when he became a member of St. Martin’s in Odebolt. He attended country school near Schaller and then graduated from Schaller High School in 1936. Everett lived all but 7 years of his life in the Schaller community.
Following his 18th birthday, Everett enlisted in the United States Army. Following the end of World War II, he continued in the active reserve before retiring with the rank of Major after 21 years of service to his country. At the end of his active tour of duty, Everett returned to Schaller to work for the City of Schaller. Following that, he purchased a portable mill, grinding grain for area farmers. Everett was then employed by Schaller Consolidated Popcorn Company as an Outside Foreman at their plant until his retirement at age 65.
On September 4, 1943, Everett was united in marriage to Joan Sippel at the Silver Chapel in Fort McClellan at Aniston, Alabama. They recently celebrated 60 years together. Six children blessed their union. Everett was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and cherished the time he spent with his family. He was loved and will be missed daily.
Everett was an accomplished organist after learning to play during his teen years. He derived great pleasure from music, whether playing or listening to it. He started his first band in high school, which was made up of family members. The band played for a variety of occasions in countless towns for many years, but Everett particularly enjoyed playing for nursing home residents. He was also organist for St. Joseph’s Church in Schaller for many years.
Everett was a Scout Master for many years. He enjoyed camping and traveling. He especially liked to travel to Arizona in the winter months. Everett was an avid gardener who was grew prize-winning roses. As a member of the Schaller Park Board, he carefully tended all the rose and flower beds in thee town park. Everett liked people and derived great pleasure from time spent with his broad circle of friends.
Survivors include his wife, Joan of Arthur; two sons: Dwain and wife Sharon Bloyer of Ft. Collins, CO and Richard and wife Kay Bloyer of Odebolt, IA; three daughters: Sharon and husband Dennis Johnson of Anthon, IA, Lorraine and husband Robert Stagner of Holly Springs, NC, and Nancy Johnston of Jeannette, PA; his brother Ralph and wife Daphine Bloyer of Crystal River, FL; 19 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; his aunt Velma Rodman of Sac City and many extended family and friends.
Preceding Everett in death were his parents, his son William (Bill), his brothers Raymond and Vaughn, his sister Lois, and his daughter-in-law Cathy Bloyer.
Eva Liston
Eva Louise Liston, age 96, of Lake View, Iowa, passed away on Monday, December 29, 2003, at Black Hawk Life Care Center in Lake View.
Eva Louise Reuter was born on January 31, 1907, at Ashton, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Anna (Jackley) Reuter. She was baptized February 3, 1907 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ashton. She lived in Ashton and Dubuque, Iowa, where she attended school through the eighth grade.
Eva and Ralph J. Liston were united in marriage while living in Des Moines and were blessed with a daughter, Gwendolyn.
In her younger days Eva worked as a secretary for W.P.A. and Montgomery Wards both in Des Moines, IA. They moved to Lake View in 1945 and she worked as a bookkeeper at Lake View Concrete Products Company for over 30 years, retiring in 1975.
Eva was a member of Lakes United Methodist Church in Lake View, Ladies Aid, and Alpha Tau Sigma Sorority. She enjoyed playing bridge and was a member of the U-Delt-Um Bridge Club in Lake View. Eva had a love for flowers and spent a lot of time in her flower garden, but especially she loved to spend time with her daughter and grandchildren.
Survivors include her daughter Gwen Swanson of Lake View; four granddaughters: Margo and her husband Chuck Lierman, Maureen and her husband Richard Merrill, Marty and her husband Kevin Kelsey, and Marlys and her husband Kevin Duncan; 11 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren and extended family and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; Frank and Anna Reuter; step-mother Mariah; husband Ralph in 1990; son-in-law Willard “Bud” Swanson in 1998; three great-grandchildren; and two brothers Walter and Mark Reuter.
Funeral services for Eva will be Wednesday, December 31st at 10:30 a.m., at Lakes United Methodist Church in Lake View, with Rev. Rick Johnson and Rev. Chad Lierman officiating. Special music by Joy Lierman, soloist, congregational singing, and Marilyn Hundling, organist. Pallbearers include: Chuck Lierman, Rev. Chad Lierman, Kevin Kelsey, Rick Merrill, Kevin Duncan, and Court Duncan. Burial will be at the Ferguson Cemetery in Lake View.

Frances M. Allen
Frances Merlene Allen, age 70, of Sac City, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, November 5, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
Frances Merlene Patterson was born on June 22, 1933, at Glidden, IA, the daughter of Fred M. and Leora M. (Trafford) Patterson. She graduated from Glidden High School in 1951.
On December 10, 1953, Frances was united in marriage to Dwaine E. Allen at Lake City, Iowa. They were blessed with three sons: Dennis, Mark and Edward. They lived in Lake City, Rockwell City, Lohrville, and moved to Sac City in the early 60’s.
Frances worked as a printer for the Reminder in Rockwell City, a printer for Nobles Manufacturing in Sac City until they closed, worked for Newell B.V. County Journal, and in the service department of Buena Vista College from 1984-1995, retiring on May 20, 1995. She continued to work for Head Start in Sac City.
Frances was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Sac City. She enjoyed being active with her sons Cub Scouts as a Den Mother, and especially enjoyed fishing, camping, and square dancing. Dwaine and Frances were members of Stormy Water Rollers for over 20 years.
Survivors include her son Dennis Allen of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; her brothers: Kenneth (Linda) Patterson of Albuquerque, NM, Robert (Linda) Patterson of Grand Prairie, TX, and Doyle (Rosemary) Patterson of Lubbock, TX; sister-in-law Kathy Patterson of Janesville, WI, extended family and many friends. She will be missed by her many Head Start children.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Dwaine on March 18, 2003; two sons: Mark and Edward; and a brother Merlin Patterson.
Service for Frances M. Allen is Saturday, November 8, 2003, 1:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Sac City, Reverend B. J. Ukena officiating. Music provided by Bonnie Richards, organist, along with congregational singing. Flower committee includes Bernette Austin and Jill Austin. Pallbearers are: Jake Allen, Bill Tasler, Al Campbell, Jim Pontious,
Randy Smith, and Chuck Titus. Final resting place will be at the Lake City Cemetery, Lake City, Iowa.

Florentine “Flossie” Cates
Florentine “Flossie” Ludwig Cates, age 83, of Lake View, Iowa, passed away on Friday, November 28, 2003, at Stewart Memorial Hospital in Lake City, Iowa.
Flossie was born on May 5, 1920, at home on the family farm near Mt. Carmel, the daughter of Frank and Agnes (Wernimont) Ludwig. She was baptized and confirmed at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church. She grew up on the family farm north of Breda and attended Mt. Carmel School though the eighth grade.
On November 26, 1946, Flossie was united in marriage to Harlan W. Cates at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sac City. To this union three children were born: Marvin, Patricia, and Donnavon. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wall Lake.
Flossie was a devoted wife and mother. She worked outside the home as a cook at Lake View Auburn School and was a housekeeper for Father Tolan at Wall Lake. She loved the farm life, crocheting, spending time with her grandchildren, and the Lake Riders Saddle Club.
Survivors include her children: Marvin Cates and his wife Sherry of Rockwell City, IA, Donnavon “Don” and his wife Marcene of Auburn, IA, and Patricia Gosch and her husband Steve of Sac City, IA; her 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; her brothers: Leo Ludwig and his wife Kay of Cochran, WI, Edwin Ludwig and his wife Joyce of Rochester, MN; her sisters: Edna Greving and her husband Bernard of Carroll, IA, and Marita Ludwig of Glenwood, IA; a sister-in-law Marilyn Ludwig of Lake City; and extended family and friends.
Flossie was preceded in death by her parents; husband Harlan on April 14, 1974, a sister Loretta; and four brothers: Cletus, Elmer, Bill, and Lenius.
Services will be held Tuesday, December 2, 2003, 10:30 a.m., at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wall Lake, Iowa, with Father John McGuirk officiating. Music will be provided by the St. Joseph’s Choir with Sue Mein, organist. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Auburn, Iowa.

Florence H. Hanke
Funeral services for Florence H. Hanke, age 94, of Storm Lake is Tuesday, September 9, 2003, 10:00 am, at Faith Lutheran Church, Early, Iowa, with Vicar Charles Bettin officiating. Music will be provided by Carol Wendel at the organ and Congregational singing. Pallbearers include: Michael Hemer, Jeffrey Hemer, Gwendolyn Snart, Randall Covey, David Covey, James Covey, Ronnie Hanke, and Timothy Hanke. Burial will be at the Buena Vista Memorial Cemetery, Storm Lake, Iowa.

Florence H. Hanke, age 94, of Storm Lake, IA, formerly of Early, IA, passed away on Saturday, September 6, 2003, at Methodist Manor is Storm Lake.
Florence H. Lange was born on March 2, 1909, in Sac County, the daughter of August and Louise D. (Bauer) Lange. She lived on the farm with her parents and attended country school.
On December 21, 1927, Florence was united in marriage to Alfred A. F. Hanke. They were the parents of two daughters: Corinne and Jean Ann and a son Neal. They lived in Lake View until moving to a farm near Early. Florence was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of rural Odebolt until it closed and then transferred her membership to Faith Lutheran Church of Early.
Florence was a busy housewife, and loving mother and grandmother. She enjoyed painting, gardening, and doing crafts.
She is survived by her children: Corinne and her husband J. Stanley Covey of Storm Lake, Jean Ann and her husband Richard Hemer of Lago Vista, TX, and Neal and his wife Betty Hanke of Topeka, KS; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; two sisters: Gladys Lange of Storm Lake and Dorothy Kincannon of Denver, CO; brother-in-law Harold Hanke and his wife Dee of Atlantic, IA; and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Alfred on July 4, 1996; and two brothers Harold and Everett Lange.
Hazel M. Bruns
Hazel M. Bruns, age 87, of Lake View, passed away on Thursday, October 9, 2003, at Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake.
Hazel M. Bugge was born on August 25, 1916, at Odebolt, IA, the daughter of Fredrick and Katherine (Stock) Bugge. She lived in Odebolt, moving to Lake View in 1924, graduating from Lake View High School in 1935.
In September of 1938 Hazel was united in marriage to Paul H. Gerdes. They had one son Gene. After Paul passed away in 1966, Hazel married John Bruns in 1971. He passed away in 1983.
She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Lake View where she was confirmed June 26, 1932. Hazel was active in the Ladies Aid and a member of the alter guild.
Hazel was a loving wife and mother. She worked at a defense plant, grocery store, National Oats, and 14 years at the Public Library in Lake View, retiring in 1979. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, and visiting with friends, watching birds and playing cards. She belonged to several card clubs.
Survivors include: her son Gene (Anne) Gerdes of Lake View, IA; two step sons: Dale (Nancy) Bruns and Dennis (Karen) Bruns all of Fonda, IA; two grandchildren: Stacie and Kelli Gerdes; 5 step grandchildren: Aaron, Matthew, Daniel, David (Angie), Marla Beth (Bryan); 2 step-great grandchildren: McKayla and Dylon Bruns; a brother Elmer (Norma) Bugge of Lake View; and extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; infant brother Raymond Bugge; and her two husbands Paul Gerdes in 1966 and John Bruns in 1983.
Services for Hazel Bruns will be Monday, October 13, 2003, at 10:30 a.m., at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Lake View, Iowa. Pastor James Travis will be officiating, with congregational singing, Jim Stock organist. The flower committee consists of Bonnie Peters and Susie Petersen. Pallbearers include: Dale Bruns, Dennis Bruns, Jerry Bugge, Raymond Freese, Lester Peters, and Darrell Brinker. Burial will be at the Wall Lake Cemetery, Wall Lake, Iowa.
Howard I. Heun
Visitation for Howard Heun will be Tuesday, September 16, 4:00-8:00 pm, at Farber & Otteman Funeral Home, Sac City. Interment will be at St. James Catholic Cemetery, Clare, Iowa, at a later date.
Howard I. Heun, age 73, of Sac City, Iowa, died on September 12, 2003, at his home in Sac City.
Howard was born on April 5, 1930, at Clare, Iowa, the son of Norbert and Frances (Fox) Heun. He was baptized in the Catholic Church at Clare and grew up in the Humboldt and Dakota City area. He attended Clare School. Howard served in the US Army from January 1952-1954, serving in the Korean conflict.
On September 9, 1960, Howard and Nancy McKinney were united in marriage at Jackson, MN. They had five children: Dennis, Craig, Randy, RaNay, and Rodney.
Howard worked in the excavation business in the Sac City area and was semi-retired. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and was a lifetime member of the veterans organization.
He is survived by his wife Nancy; two sons: Randy Heun of Colorado Springs, CO and Dennis Heun and his wife Francine of Henderson, NV; a daughter RaNay Freese of Wall Lake, IA; 7 grandchildren: Aaron Ausborn, Angie and Jessica Evers, Nicholas and Nathan Heun, and Caleb and Cody Heun; 10 great-grandchildren: Brandon, Faith, and Aaron Jr. Ausborn, Scott and R.J. Freese, Jenna and Joedon Evers, and Jenae, Nathan Jr., and Logan Heun; a brother Leonard (Ione) Heun of Lake View, IA; 4 sisters: Mary (Jack) Baumic of Grimes, IA, Kate Marcelius of Humboldt, IA, Marge Fultcher of Morgan Hill, CA, and Eleanor (Earl) Bartan of Livermore, IA., and extended family.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents; two sons: Craig and Rodney; brothers: Emmett, Ray, Joe, Jim, and Don; and sisters: Irene and Loretta Heun.
Inez Witte
Inez Witte, age 87, of Canton, Ohio, formerly of Early, Iowa, died Thursday, September 18, 2003 at the Windsor Medical Center in Canton.
Funeral Services will be Thursday, September 25, 2003 at 2:30 PM at the United Methodist Church in Early with Reverend Karl Schiltz officiating. Burial will be in the Schaller Cemetery in Schaller.
Visitation will be just prior to the funeral services on Thursday, from 1:00 – 2:30 at the church. The Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City is in charge of the arrangements.
Inez J. Wedge was born in Cherokee County, Iowa on March 24, 1916, to Cecil and Cynthia (Wilcoxon) Wedge. She spent her early years living with her parents in rural Cherokee County. She later attended grade school in Larrabee, Iowa and then graduated from high school at Ida Grove, Iowa. At age 15, Inez was the Ida County 4-H Health Champ.
Inez was united in marriage with Roy H. Witte on August 17, 1937 at her home in Ida Grove. Their union was blessed with one son and three daughters. After their marriage, Roy and Inez lived at Slayton, MN for five years before moving to Schaller in 1944 and then on to Early in 1952. In 1978, they moved to Arkansas. Inez was a member of the United Methodist Church in Early and belonged to the United Methodist Women. She also belonged to a garden club, and along with her husband, a card club.
Inez spent some time working in the drugstore at Ida Grove and at the local telephone company, before her marriage. Then, as a loving wife and devoted mother, her husband and children came first in her life. She spent many years as a homemaker creating a loving, stable home life for her beloved family. She especially liked to bake homemade bread for her family to enjoy.
In her spare moments, Inez enjoyed knitting. After Roy’s death, she spent time volunteering at the Bates Hospital in Bentonville, for the American Cancer Society and served as treasurer of a local AARP chapter in Bentonville.
Inez cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren, and when her grandchildren became old enough, they all enjoyed testing their skills together in a game of Scrabble.
Inez loved to travel. It didn’t matter to her where the car was going, as long as she was in it! She especially liked to recall cherished memories of touring Europe during a trip there in 1986.
Inez was loved by her family and friends and will be missed.
Inez is survived by one son, Dwight and wife Judy Witte of Canton, and three daughters, Marilyn Rice of Des Moines, Judy Nunez of San Diego, CA and Gayle and husband Dan Higbee of Mays Landing, NJ; eleven grandchildren: Lori, Tony and Todd Rice, Lisa Mauro, Pam Negri, Jeff Witte, Kris Pippolo, Joel Higbee, Gwen Plut, Justin Nunez and Jamie Fiore; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister Alta Rose and husband Don Nystedt of Cibolo, Texas; and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one sister, Lila Mae Rongstad.

Joseph F. Blass
Joseph F. Blass, age 67, of Early, Iowa, passed away Friday, November 28, 2003, at his home.
Joseph Franklin Blass was born April 22, 1936, in Nemaha, Iowa, the first son of Martin Blass and Wilma (Hooper) Blass. He grew up helping to care for the animals that were part of the family farming operation. After graduating from Sac City High School in 1954, marrying Marlene Cook of Nemaha, and becoming a father to son Brian and daughter Jolene, he graduated from Iowa State, as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1961, with the distinction of Phi Zeta.
During the next 16 years he lived in Lake View, Iowa, and his life centered around the animals, their owners and friends, raising his children and helping other children in the community, especially through 4-H and as School Board President, and always made farming part of his life too.
In 1977, with a new wife Dee Buller and her two sons, they moved to Clarksville, Arkansas where he continued to center his life around veterinary medicine and children. Being a Mason and a Shriner, he was instrumental in organizing the Shrine Group in Clarksville which helped many physically impaired children in that area.
In 1984 he came back to Iowa and was appointed by the USDA, Area Veterinarian in Charge of Northeast Iowa. After contracting an animal disease, he was forced to retire in 1993 and moved back to Sac County. Although Veterinary Medicine could no longer be part of his active life, he kept busy farming, restoring tractors, building radio controlled model airplanes, and restoring the farm where he had spent time as a boy with his grandparents.
He is survived by his grandchildren Amy and Craig Blass of Sac City; his wife Dee and step-son Dan Buller with his daughters Ellen and Anna of Shreveport, LA, and step- son Ken Blass and his wife Kari of Libertyville, IL; parents Martin and Wilma Blass of Early, IA; three brothers: Jim Blass and his wife Gloria of Sac City; Ted Blass and his wife Virginia and their son Matt of Sac City, and Tim Blass of Early; niece Kellie Highland and her husband Kent and their children Jay and Jamie of Sac City; a special cousin Shari Busch and her husband Ben of Sac City; numerous cousins and their families, many friends; and his best friend, his dog Brownie.
His son Brian, his daughter Jolene and nephew Ty preceded him in death.
Visitation is on Tuesday, December 2, 2003, at 1:00 p.m.with the memorial services following at 2:00 p.m., at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City with Rev. Karl Schultz officiating. Mary Townsend will be the organist. Honorary pallbearers include: Johnny Everts, Dale Kreft, Dean Stock, Jim Blass, Ted Blass, Tim Blass, and Kent Highland. Burial will be at the Early Union Cemetery in Early.
Joanne Lott
Service for Joanne Lott, age 68, of Lytton, is 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 25, 2003, at the Presbyterian Church, Lytton, Iowa, with Rev. Wayne Pfannkuch officiating, Dennis Hinrichs, soloist, with congregational singing, and Mary Townsend, organist. The flower committee includes: Lill Shull, Terry Striegel, Linda Murphy, and Marlene Glasnapp. Honorary pallbearers include her granddaughters: Kortni Greenlee, Avery Aden, and Amber Aden. Joanne (Wright) Lott, age 68, of Lytton, IA passed away on Sunday, September 21, 2003, at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, MN.
Jo was born on May 24, 1935, in Schaller, IA, the daughter of Melvin and Hattie (Schilling) Wright. She graduated from the Schaller Community School in 1953 and from Buena Vista College, Storm Lake, IA in 1955.
On December 28, 1957, Jo was united in marriage to Mickey Lott in Schaller. To this union three daughters were born, Lori, Leah, and Lana. Jo was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Lytton.
Jo enjoyed her many years of teaching in Lytton, Jolley, Rockwell City, and Pomeroy School Districts. Since retiring in 1994, she enjoyed antiquing, reading, motor cycling, going for coffee, and spending winters in Florida. Her most precious time was being “Grandma Jo” with her grandchildren.
Jo is survived by her husband, Mickey; and daughters, Lori Greenlee and her husband Scott of Sac City, Leah Aden and her husband Barry of Pomeroy, and Lana Pitstick and her husband Rick of Fonda; six grandchildren: Kortni and Kyle Greenlee, Austin, Alex, Avery, and Amber Aden; two brothers: Dale Wright and his wife Phyllis of Folsom, CA and Neal Wight of Sunnyvale, CA; her twin sister, Janene Dixon and her husband Bob of Saugus, CA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Wallace and Sandy Lott of Jolley, Marc and Shelley Lott of Ames, Jovonna and Don Whiton of Des Moines; many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Jo was preceded in death by an infant son; parents; brother, Pete Wright; and parents-in-law, Eugene and Aulda Lott.
