Betty Jeckell
Betty M. Jeckell, age 83, of Sac City, Iowa, formerly of Newell and Nemaha, passed away on Friday, November 19, 2004, at Park View Care Center in Sac City.
Betty Jane Mauseau was born on March 12, 1921, in Duluth, Minnesota, the daughter of Walter and Edith (Whitmore) Mauseau. She grew up in Duluth, Chicago, Indianapolis, and Cincinnati areas, graduating from Hartwell High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. She continued her education at Miami University of Ohio.
On January 17, 1946, Betty was united in marriage to Gordon Jeckell in Cincinnati. They were blessed with two daughters: Susan and Janet. Betty was a city gal who embraced the farm life. She became a farming partner with Gordon and created a warm and comfortable home for their daughters. She loved to read and was well informed on farming techniques as well as local and national current events. They retired in 1985.
Betty kept busy with her handwork (creating afghans for all her grandkids), reading, and putting together jigsaw puzzles. She was an avid baseball and football fan and in her earlier years enjoyed going to square dances. Her family will treasure their special memories of Betty helping all teams with Trivia answers; reading the Wall Street Journal; the cowboy cookies she always had on hand; card games with special friends; and bowling with the Nemaha group.
Betty was baptized as a baby in Duluth, MN, and became an active member of the United Methodist Church attending women’s church organizations in Nemaha and Newell. She belonged to the Reading Club, L.N.O. Card Club, and Eastern Star.
Survivors include her daughters: Susan Determan and husband Bill of Early, IA, and Janet Houdeshell and husband LeRoy of Plymouth, MN; four grandchildren: Aaron (Heather) Houdeshell of Maple Grove, MN, Billie Determan of Omaha, NE, Adam Houdeshell and his fiancée Andrea Wellman of Aberdeen, SD, and Barry (Traci) Determan of Des Moines, IA; brother-in-law Earl Cutter of Dayton, OH; sisters-in-law Naomi (Wilbur) Patten of Aurelia, IA, Fernetta (Wayne) Siebrecht of Schaller, IA, and Vivian Keuhn of Trenton, MO; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Edith Mauseau; husband Gordon Jeckell on October 23, 1989; and sister Marjorie Cutter.
Funeral services for Betty will be held Monday, November 22nd, 10:30 am, at United Methodist Church in Newell. Reverend David Schumann will officiate and Cheryl Baughman will accompany Russ Davis in special music. Active pallbearers include the following: Aaron Houdeshell, Heather Houdeshell, Adam Houdeshell, Billie Determan, Barry Determan, Traci Determan, and Andrea Wellman. Interment will follow at the Newell Cemetery under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City on Sunday, November 21st, from 2:00 - 8:00 pm, with family present from 2:00-4:00 and 5:00-8:00.
Dwayne Churchill
Funeral services for Dwayne Churchill of Lake View, Iowa, will be held Tuesday, December 7th, 1:30 p.m., at the Wall Lake Baptist Church, in Wall Lake, with Pastor Kenneth McMillen officiating. Christine McMillen will accompany Pastor Kenneth and Denise McMillen in special music. Honorary pallbearers include Chuck Cole, John Weimer, and Roger Anderson. Active pallbearers will be the following: Nicholas Ludwig, Josh Ludwig, Micah York, Kevin Berger, Mark Ludwig, and Gary Berger. Burial will be at the Wall Lake Cemetery under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.
Visitation will be Monday, December 6th, 5:00-8:00 pm, at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Lake View.
Dwayne Edward Churchill, age 77, of Lake View, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, December 4, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa. He was born June 30, 1927, at Gravity, Iowa, the son of Orie and Rachel (Levi) Churchill. He attended country school in Gravity and on October 17, 1976, Dwayne was united in marriage to Jo Ann Gregory in a beautiful wedding in Carnarvon, Iowa.
Dwayne never really retired, he loved to stay busy, and through the years worked as a maintenance worker for Ferd Hansen Implement in Sac City, I. B. P. in Storm Lake, National Oats in Wall Lake, Wiedemeier’s in Carroll, and Four Seasons Car Wash in Lake View. Dwayne was a hard worker, it wasn’t like him to sit around, he was always doing something. You could see him many times tending the yard, making everything outside beautiful as he loved his flowers and grew beautiful roses.
Dwayne was a wonderful Christian man who loved the Lord, a small man with a big heart. He loved to spend time with the kids, grandkids, and great grandchildren. He was a member of the Wall Lake Baptist Church and served as an usher and bell ringer. He loved to visit with friends and neighbors along the way; nobody was a stranger to him. All who knew him, especially his family, will miss this man. He loved the church and the Lord.
Survivors include his loving wife of 28 years, Jo Ann Churchill; his daughter Diana Johnson of Bentonville, AR; stepdaughters: Connie Ludwig and her husband Mark of Breda, IA, Joyce York and her husband Ed of Humboldt, IA, Jan Sorensen and her husband Robert of Ft. Meyers, FL; stepson Tim Livingood and his wife Lisa of Marshall, MN; and son-in-law Gary Berger of Rockwell City, IA. Others who will cherish his memory are his sixteen grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother Orval “Jack” Churchill of Council Bluffs, IA; and two sisters: Eva Wikehoff and husband Rex of Bedford, IA, and Mildred Starkett of Des Moines, IA; many nieces; nephews; cousins; and a host of friends.
Dwayne was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Bill and Harold; three sisters: Doris, Margaret, and Edna; and two stepsons: Mike and Eddie Livingood.
Dean Moeller
Dean V. Moeller, age 69, of Sac City, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, November 2, 2004, at the Newell Good Samaritan Center in Newell, Iowa.
Dean was born June 3, 1935, in Sac City, Iowa, the son of Andrew and Helen (Firth) Moeller.
He attended Sac City Schools graduating from Sac City High School with the Class of 1954.
On November 11, 1956, Dean was united in marriage to Sharon Porth in Rockwell City, Iowa. To this union four children were born, Mark, Judy, Jeff, and Gary.
Dean was a truck driver for Noble Manufacturing until their closing and retired from Smithway Trucking in 1997. He lived his entire life in Sac City and raised his family there. He was baptized in the First Baptist Church in Sac City and when not trucking he enjoyed watching football on television.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon; daughter, Judy Heun and her husband Steve of Nemaha; son, Gary Moeller of Sac City; and two grandsons, Joseph Heun of Elk City, Oklahoma and Brian Heun of Nemaha. Other survivors include his brother, Jimmie Joe Moeller and his wife Gayle of Oshkosh, Wisconsin; his sister, Esther Schulte of Storm Lake and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Helen Moeller, his two sons, Mark and Jeff Moeller: grandson Andy Heun, sisters, Betty Coleman and Carol Sargent and brothers, Robert, John, Darrell and George.
Funeral services will be held Friday, November 5th, at 2:00 pm at the First Baptist Church in Sac City with Reverend Penny Ritter officiating. Frank Pontious will sing “In the Garden” and “Finally Home” accompanied by Phyllis Pontious. Burial will take place at the Oakland Cemetery in Sac City under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home. There will be no visitation.
Dorothy Ann Marie Stone
Dorothy Anna Marie (Spoo) Stone, age 89, of Sac City, Iowa, formerly of Lytton, passed away on Wednesday, November 17, 2004, at Loring Hospital in Sac City.
Dorothy was born on February 5, 1915, at Estherville, IA, the daughter of Chris and Martha (Meyer) Spoo. She was baptized August 29, 1915, and confirmed June 9, 1929, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Estherville. She attended Emmett County schools.
On December 4, 1937, Dorothy was married to Truman Henry Stone at Estherville, to this union six children were born. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sac City.
Dorothy was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. After the children where grown, she worked in the kitchen at several local Café’s, and last was a nurse’s aide for nine years at Park View Manor, moving back to Sac City in November of 1983 after Truman passed away. She enjoyed doing embroidery and in her younger years tending her vegetable garden and flower garden. But most beloved to Dorothy was her family. She treasured every moment she was able to spend with them. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were very precious and dear to her.
She is survived by five children: Virginia and Jon Minnmann, Jack and Joan Stone, Earl and Jackie Stone all of Sac City, and Byron “Butch” and Nancy Stone of Wall Lake, IA, Beverly and Mark Lake of Tucumcari, NM; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Agnes Borlaug of Sac City, and Lucille (Francis) Origer of Rochester, MN; two brothers: Elmer Spoo of Estherville; and Henry Spoo of Brandon, SD; brother-in-law Leonard Beaver of St. Croix Falls, WI; sister-in-law Louise Spoo of Bangor, WI; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents Chris and Martha Spoo; infant sister Elizabeth Spoo; husband Truman Stone; son Dan Lee Stone; infant great-grandson Harrison Morris; brother Lester Spoo; and sister Helen Beaver.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 20th, 1:30 pm, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sac City, with Reverend Roger Carlisle officiating, and Margaret Schramm organist. Honorary pallbearers include: Heather Brzezinsky, Jane Morris, Wendy Ulrich, Molly Hartung, and Kate Kies. Active pallbearers will be the following: Scott Stone, Jeff Stone, Shawn Stone, Mark Minnmann, Chad Lake, and Joshua Lake. Graveside services will be at 4:00 pm at Rosehill Cemetery in Rockwell City with Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 8:00 pm, Friday, November 19th, at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City.
Daniel Tebben
In Loving memory of Daniel Richard “Hoss” Tebben, age 38, of Wall Lake, Iowa, husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and a friend to everyone who knew him, died of a heart attack after four years of treatment for heart disease. For those of us who loved him, did so because only he could touch a life as he could. I have lost my friend, my lover, and life’s companion. His children and grandchildren who he loved unconditionally will forever love their “Dad” and “PaPa”. As his friends, I know he would only want you to love your memories of him.
Daniel was born January 10, 1966, in Britt, Iowa, the son of Richard and Arlene (Gossman) Tebben. They made their home in Carnarvon, Iowa and Dan attended and graduated from Wall Lake High School in 1984.
Dan was a truck driver for many years but came off the road when he was united in marriage to Stephanie Lyn Clemens on November 8, 1997, at Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake. His dream had come true; He became what he always wanted, “a husband, father, and grandfather”. He was a “Gentle Giant”. At that time he began working for Midwest Industries in Ida Grove, Iowa in the maintenance department.
Dan had several interests, including hunting, fishing, ice fishing, Harley’s, and spending time with his wife and children; however one of the most important hobbies were his dogs. He enjoyed taking rides with them, sitting on his lap.
Dan is survived by his wife, Stephanie; mother, Arlene Tebben; three daughters, Shannon Wilkins and her husband Brad of Fort Dodge; Aliss and Elizabeth of Wall Lake; three grandchildren: Carter Lynn, Cailey Danielle, and Carson Bradley (Milo); two dogs (Like children) Samson and Ellie; sister, Anita Nuetzman and her husband Dennis of Story City and their children, David, Patrick, and Erin; He was preceded in death by his father, Richard; Uncle, Lenny Tebben; grandparents Tebben; and his first rotweiler, Andre.
Funeral services will be held Friday, November 5th, 10:00 a.m., at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wall Lake with Father John McGuirk officiating. Sue Mein accompanied the St. Joseph’s Choir. The flower committee consists of: Jan Bieret, Mr. & Mrs. Steve Snyder, and Mr. & Mrs. Dennis Paysen. Honorary pallbearers are the following: Dave Farrell, Doug Daily, Tony Potthoff, and Ed Wright. Active pallbearers will be: Jeff Roth, Todd Steinkamp, Tony Stonerook, Dan Roth, Steve Gonnerman, Danny Brotherson, and Craig Pellersels. Graveside services will be held at Corwith Cemetery, in Corwith, Iowa, under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home, at 3:00 p.m., with Father Dan Greving officiating. Visitation is Thursday, November 4th, 4:00-8:00 pm at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Wall Lake.
Harriett Gruber
Harriett Helen Gruber was born October 3, 1914, in Sac City, Iowa, to Charles and Elsie Hechtner Brynteson. After a long illness, she died December 1, 2004 at the age of 90 years.
She is survived by her son, Loren Gruber of Marshall, Missouri; her daughter and son-in-law Mary and Richard Carter of Decorah; her grandchildren, Elizabeth Shinall of North Liberty, Iowa; Stephen Wilkinson-Gruber of Marion, Iowa; Margaret Crawford of West Des Moines; Sarah Carter of Des Moines; her great-grandchildren, Madeline Shinall; Alexander Wilkinson-Gruber; and Mick Carter; many cousins of the Brynteson, Hechtner, and Huldeen families; and numerous friends.
A 1932 graduate of Sac City High School, she attended Carlton College in Northfield, Minnesota, from 1932 until 1933, before transferring to the University of Iowa, where she was a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority. There, she majored in Latin and minored in French.
She taught those languages in Chicago upon graduation from the University of Iowa in 1936. After her marriage to Maurice Deputy Gruber on June 26, 1938, the couple moved to Spencer, Iowa, where he practiced dentistry and she continued to teach. In 1951 they moved to Sac City where he practiced dentistry until his death in 1970. Harriett sub taught in Sac City and then taught English in Bayard, Iowa. She also studied Spanish at Buena Vista College.
Harriett Gruber received the Governor's Award for Outstanding Volunteerism in April 1988. She volunteered daily at Kate Mitchell Elementary School in Ames as an ESL tutor and teaching assistant, and she later volunteered in media services at Gilbert Elementary School in Gilbert, Iowa.
Active philanthropically, she was a member of P.E.O. She was initiated into Chapter BI, Sac City, in 1932, and is currently a member of Chapter IV, Ames. She held all of the P.E.O. chapter offices and served as delegate to Iowa state convention several times. She was also a volunteer for charities now known as the United Way, Easter Seals, and the Lung Association
Harriett Gruber served the Sac City Methodist Church as Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, organist, pianist and as delegate to the Iowa Annual Conference.
She was also a member of bridge clubs, a sewing club, the Fortnightly Current Events Club, a member of book clubs and a traveler. She journeyed to various locations in the United States under the auspices of the National Wildlife Federation Association, and she traveled to the Canadian Rockies, Nova Scotia, Hawaii, and each of the Scandinavian countries.
Services will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, December 4, 2004, at the United Methodist Church in Sac City, under the direction of Farber and Otteman Funeral Home. Memorials may be sent to the Program for Continuing Education (PCE); P.E.O. Executive Office; 3700 Grand Avenue; Des Moines, IA 50312; or to St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center; 701 East 4th Street; St. Ansgar, IA 50472.
Visitation will be prior to the funeral service.
Carolyn Altmanshofer
Carolyn Kaye Altmanshofer, age 59 of Wall Lake, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, November 26, 2003, at her home.
Carolyn was born April 5, 1944, in Carroll, Iowa, the daughter of Myron and Ruth (Bauer) Maynard. She was baptized in the Catholic faith. The family lived on a farm near Wall Lake. Carolyn attended country school and graduated from Wall Lake High School in 1962. She continued her education by attending beauty school in Sioux City, Iowa. Carolyn continued to live in Sioux City and worked as a hair stylist at Younkers. Carolyn became a nurses aid and worked for Twilight Acres Nursing Home for the past 14 years. She especially enjoyed caring for others.
Carolyn was united in marriage to Donald Altmanshofer on December 21, 1996, at Elko, Nevada.
Her hobbies included ballroom dancing and going to Sloan. She especially like to spend time with her children and grandchildren; attending their dance and tumbling recitals.
Carolyn is survived by two sons: Shawn Myers and his wife Holly of Smithland, Iowa, and Corey Myers of Waynesboro, Virginia; two daughters: Tonya Myers of Montrose, Colorado, and Tina Lamaak and her husband Dale of Lake View; seven grandchildren: Christina and Katie Jo Lamaak, Drake Burke, Kylie Myers, Markes and Makenna Myers, and Kayla Myers; two brothers and their wives: Robert and Cathy Maynard of Council Bluffs and Richard and Lois Maynard of Stanwood, Washington; and her special daughter Tammi Schultz.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Don on May 30, 2003; infant son Keaton Mathew Myers; and step-mother Fern Maynard.
Funeral services will be Monday, December 1, 2003, 10:30 a.m., at Triniity Presbyterian Church in Wall Lake, Iowa, with Reverend Donald Gibson officiating. There will be congregational singing with Sue Arnold accompaning on the organ. Pallbearers include: Darrin Boger, Robert Gross, Kenneth Schwanz, Chris Cummings, Cletus Broich, and Scotty Hoaglund. Burial will be at the Wall Lake Cemetery.
Visitation is Sunday at Farber & Otteman Funeral Home, Wall Lake, Iowa, from 3:00 – 8:00 p.m., with family present 3:00-5:00 and 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Dorothy Provost
Funeral services for Dorothy Provost are Saturday, January 10, 2004, at 10:30 am, at the Presbyterian Church in Lytton, Iowa, with Reverend Wayne Pfannkuch officiating. Special music is provided by Frank Pontious, soloist, and Mary Townsend, organist. Honorary pallbearers include: Bob and Marilyn Williams, Catherine Ringgenberg, Opal Kruckenberg, Evelyn Nordin, Peggy Nordin, Carol Ross, and Ray Baily. Pallbearers will be the following: Doug Williams, Greg Williams, Chris Nordin, Bruce Williams, Roger Peters, and Laverne Arndt. Burial will be at the Cedar Cemetery at Fonda, Iowa.

Dorothy Pearl Provost, age 86, of Lytton, Iowa, passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 7, 2004, at the Fonda Nursing & Rehab Center.
Dorothy Pearl Nagel was born on March 15, 1917, in Williams Township, Calhoun County, Iowa, the daughter of William and Amber (Pierce) Nagel. She attended country school through 8th grade and graduated from Fonda High School in 1935.
On December 30, 1940, Dorothy and Lee Marvin Provost were united in marriage. They were blessed with a daughter Linda. They both worked for Douglas Aircraft in California and Oklahoma. In 1946 they returned to Lytton and Dorothy worked at the McVay Hospital in Lake City, and for Dr. Fred Blair and Dr. Sage in Lytton, the Lytton Telephone Company, the Woman’s Reformatory in Rockwell City, and the E.E. Lewis Dress Shop in Sac City.
Dorothy was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Lytton, and was involved in many activities. She was Sunday School Superintendent, taught Bible School, and was awarded an honorary member of the United Presbyterian Church in the United States of America in 1979, and an Outstanding Senior Presbyterian Certificate of Nomination in 1994. She was also involved with the community affairs and was awarded an Honorary FHA Chapter Mother.
She is survived by her daughter Linda Steffes and her husband Francis “Frank” of Grand Island, NE; her granddaughter Pamela (Doug) Miller and her great-grandson Mitchell Miller of Grand Island; a sister Helen Boettcher of Fonda; a brother O’Neal Nagel of Fort Wayne, IN; nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband Lee in 1979, two brothers: Alvin and Vern; and a sister Madonna Nagel.
Donald Nuetzman
Donald Eugene Nuetzman, age 68, of Story City, Iowa, formerly of Wall Lake, passed away on November 11, 2003, at Israel Family Hospice House, Ames, Iowa, following a lengthy illness.
Donald was born on May 27, 1935, in Storm Lake, Iowa, the son of Leroy and Alvina (Dettmann) Nuetzman. He lived in rural Wall Lake and attended the Odebolt High School, graduating in 1953.
On July 21, 1957, Don and Colleen Weifenbach were united in marriage in Odebolt, at the Trinity Lutheran Church. They were the parents of four children: Cathy, Dennis, Deann, and Christy. Don served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1954-58, serving one year in Africa.
He was baptized July 14, 1935, at Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake and confirmed on June 3, 1949, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Odebolt. His hobbies included: fishing, following all sports activities, and was a loyal Iowa Hawkeye fan.
Don was a farmer, and worked as a security officer at Pella Corporation in Story City, Iowa, until his retirement in February 2003.
Survivors include his children: Cathy (Steve) Droz of Parnell, IA, Dennis (Anita) Nuetzman of Roland, IA, Deann (Jim) Kellar of Callender, IA, and Christy (Joe) O’Leary of Iowa City, IA; and his 14 grandchildren: Christopher, Erica, and Brendan Droz of Parnell, IA, David, Patrick, and Erin Nuetzman of Roland, IA, Zachary, Jessica, and Cody Kellar of Callender, IA, Matthew, Sarah, and Emily O’Leary, of Iowa City, IA, and Charles and Stuart O’Leary of North Liberty, IA. Other survivors include: his two brothers: Jack (Carol) Nuetzman, and Jim (Nancy) Nuetzman, both of Wall Lake, IA; and a sister Rosalie Nuetzman of Sac City, IA; extended family; and many friends.
His parents Leroy and Alvina Nuetzman preceded him in death.
Service for Donald E. Nuetzman is Saturday, November 15, 2003, 10:30 a.m. at Farber & Otteman Funeral Home, Wall Lake, IA, with Rev. Steve Schwartz officiating. Rolan Erickson will be the organist, with congregational singing, and a duet by Sue and Steve Nuetzman. Pallbears include: Joe O’Leary, Christopher Droz, Jim Kellar, Brendan Droz, Steve Droz, and David Nuetzman. Burial will be at the Wall Lake Cemetery with full military graveside rites provided by the Wall Lake American Legion Chalon Post. No. 262.

Dorothy M. Killeen
Funeral service for Dorothy Killeen, age 84, of Sac City, is 1:30 p.m., Thursday, September 18, 2003, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sac City, Father Larry McCarty officiating, Steve Goecke soloist, Mary Townsend organist, with burial at Oakland Cemetery in Sac City. Dorothy M. (Snyder) Killeen, age 84, of Sac City, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2003, at Loring Hospital, Sac City.
Dorothy was born on February 3, 1919, in Mt. Carmel, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Rettenmaier) Snyder. She attended the Mt. Carmel Catholic School. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sac City and belonged to St. Mary’s Guild.
On November 29, 1939, Dorothy was united in marriage to Eldore “Slim” Killeen at Mt. Carmel. They were blessed with two sons: Patrick and Richard.
Dorothy was a homemaker. Her many interests included: crocheting, playing cards, gardening, playing bingo, cooking and having family get togethers.
Dorothy is survived by her two sons: Patrick Killeen, Sr. of Breda, IA, and Richard Killeen and his wife Linda of Sac City, IA; her grandchildren: Deborah and Roger Rowles of Grand Junction, IA, Dawn Bossert of Dillon, CO, Lisa Killeen, and Kim and Tom Hemmingsen, all of Newell, IA, Paula Morman of Breda, IA, and Patrick Killeen, Jr. of Arion, IA; two step-grandsons: Dennis and Leah Pepper of Middlesex, NC, and Douglas Pepper of Texas; 12 great grandchildren; and 4 step-great grandchildren. Other survivors include two brothers: John Snyder and his wife Pat of Fort Dodge, IA, and Paul Snyder and his wife Annabelle of Carroll, IA; two sisters: Mildred-Mrs. Clarence Klocke of Carroll, and Kathy Snyder of Minneapolis, MN; two sisters-in-law: Donna Snyder and Doris Salisbury both of Carroll; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Eldore in 1992; four infant siblings: Agnes, Marie, Rose and William; three sisters: Alma Snyder, Adeline Tschida and Norma Ertz; and two brothers: Herbert and Alfred Snyder.
Vernal Hanson
Vernal Eugene Hanson passed away May 9, 2006, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll, Iowa of natural causes, just short of his 90th birthday.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 15th, 2:00 p.m., at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Lake View with burial at Ferguson Cemetery under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home with Military Graveside Rites by the Lake View American Legion Eilert-Auen Post No. 133.
Visitation is from 4:00-8:00 p.m., Sunday, May 14th, at the church.
Vernal was born May 23, 1916, the eighth child of nine children, and the fifth of six sons of Emil and Gjertina Johnson Hanson, at rural Lake Lillian, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota. He grew up in the 1920’s and 30’s as a farm boy with the added economic activity of his father’s silo company. Vernal attended rural Lake Lillian schools, and the University of Minnesota Agricultural School for his high schooling.
On September 19, 1942, he married Audrey Roisum also of rural Kandiyohi County, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Vernal served in the Army during World War II as a communications lineman in the European Campaign. After the war Vernal and Audrey made their home in New London, Minnesota. Vernal worked with his father and brothers in the silo business. They lived in Luverne, Minnesota for five years before moving to Lake View, Iowa to start the Hanson Silo Company plant in 1955. He managed this business for 27 years, employing hundreds of men and constructing thousands of silos through the years. The white silo and later grey silo with the black and white checkerboard at the top is familiar to many in this area as coming from Vernal’s company. Many individuals who did business with him remember him as a sincere businessman and one whose word was his bond. If he said he would do something, he did. His workers have been known to remark he was the best boss they ever worked for.
Besides managing Hanson Silo Company, Vernal was active in the Lake View community where he was a member of the Lake View Commercial Club, served on the city council, served as elder and trustee of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, and served on the board of Spring Lake Country Club. Many improvements to the town, church and golf club were the direct the result of Vernal’s behind the scenes push or supplying of resources.
Vernal and Audrey had six children, Steven, Margaret, Mark, Bryan, Earl, and Nina. All six graduated from Lake View-Auburn High School, and went on to graduate from college because of their father’s encouragement and support.
Audrey passed away in 1981. On December 3, 1982, Vernal married his next-door neighbor of twenty-four years, Darlene Huisenga Wicker. Over the next twenty-three years Vernal and Darlene have played thousands of rounds of golf and hands of cards, and caught unnumbered fish (which Vernal cleaned). They wintered in Mesa, AZ each of these years, playing golf and cards with other Lake View and Sac County friends, until health prevented them from doing so this winter.
Vernal is preceded in death by his parents, four of his brothers, Carter, Willard, Newell and Donald; his three sisters, Irma, Ruby, and Mabel; his wife Audrey, and his son Steven.
Vernal is survived by his wife, Darlene and his brother, Alloys of New London, Minnesota. He is also survived by his children Margaret Fairchild (John, deceased) of Denison, Iowa, Mark and his wife Thalya (Durst) of Des Moines, Iowa, Bryan and his wife Dawn of Sacramento, California, Earl and his wife Janet (Lucht) of Luverne, Minnesota, and Nina and her husband Joel De Kock of New Richmond, Wisconsin; his eleven grandchildren, Steve’s daughter Jennifer Hanson Keegan, Margaret’s sons John Spencer Fairchild, Daniel Fairchild, Mark’s children Elizabeth Hanson Stephanou, David Hanson, Earl’s children Andrea Hanson Emery-Jones, Jacob Hanson, Hilary Hanson, Diana Hanson, and Nina’s children Walter De Kock, and Audrey De Kock; his three great grandchildren, Audrey Emery, Autumn Emery and James Keegan; and Darlene’s family Craig and Patty Wicker of Dallas, Texas and their sons Troy, Brock and Cary, Gary and Penny Wicker of Lake View, Iowa and their sons Chase and Colton, and Brent and Barbara Wicker of Dallas, Texas and their children Casey, Jessica, Cody and Kristen. Vernal is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their families.
