Donald W. Schwaller
Donald W. Schwaller, age 78, of Odebolt, Iowa, passed away Saturday, January 24, 2004, at Horn Memorial Hospital, Ida Grove, Iowa.
Don was born on January 8, 1926, at Odebolt, IA, the son of William and Genevieve (Thies) Schwaller. He graduated from Odebolt High School in 1943. He started farming at the age of 17, after the death of his father. On January 19, 1952, Don was united in marriage to Verna Mae Tiefenthaler at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Odebolt. They were blessed with seven children: Linda, Bill, Carol, Tom, Doug, Jim, and Ann. The family moved into Odebolt in 1967. He then worked for the Odebolt Cooperative Elevator for the next 20 years, retiring in 1987.
Don was a member of the Knights of Columbus and served two terms on the Odebolt City Council. He loved spending time with his family and grandkids. Don enjoyed camping with the Stormy Water Rollers Camping Club, watching car racing and football, and taking care of his cat, “Buff”. Don also spent many hours “surfing the Net” on his computer.
Survivors include his wife Verna Mae; his four sons: Bill and his wife Sue of Cherokee, IA, Tom and his wife Kim of Overland Park, KS, Doug of Odebolt, and Jim and his wife Kim of South Elgin, IL; his three daughters: Linda Sund and her husband Dave of Thompson Falls, MT, Carol Auen and her husband Bob of Odebolt, and Ann Knierim and her husband Steve of Cedar Rapids, IA; and 11 grandchildren: Abby and Maggie Sund, Ashley Schwaller, Broc and his wife Amy, Melanie and Megan Auen, Christi and Scott Schwaller, Kevin Schwaller, and Tyler and Caitlin Knierim. Don is also survived by his two sisters: Joyce Wee and her husband Bob of Pollock Pines, CA, and Bonnie Jones and her husband Mike of Oconomowoc, WI, and his extended family; and many friends.
Don was preceded in death by his parents William and Genevieve Schwaller.
Funeral service for Don will be Tuesday, January 27th, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Odebolt with Father John McGuirk officiating, Kay Bloyer organist, and Malinda Bengford cantor. Pallbearers include: Broc Auen, Gary Schroeder, Scott Schwaller, Ryan Tiefenthaler, Mark Schroeder, and Steve Tiefenthaler. Honorary Pallbearers are the following: Abby Sund, Ashley Schwaller, Melanie Auen, Maggie Sund, Megan Auen and Christi Schwaller. Intermet is at the St. Martin’s Cemetery in Odebolt under the direction of Farber & Otteman Funeral Home, Odebolt, IA. Friends who wish to send condolences on-line may do so online.

Boyd Waller
Maurice Boyd Waller, age 92, of Sac City, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, September 19, 2004, at Park View Care Center in Sac City.
Boyd was born February 10, 1912, in Sac City, the son of Charles Bertrom and Lena Elma (Baichtal) Waller. He attended Sac City grade school and high school graduating in 1931. He was baptized October 19, 1934, at the First Christian Church in Sac City, where he remained a lifetime member.
On June 14, 1934, Boyd and Arline Elizabeth Wilcox were united in marriage in Sac City. To this union two sons were born: Larry and Gordon. They continued to make their home in Sac City. Boyd started working at the Sac Sun while he was in high school and worked there until 1964 when he purchased Johnson Studio and renamed it Waller Studio. He sold the studio in 1976 and semi retired.
Boyd enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, and traveling. He always went each year to visit Larry and family in Tucson, AZ. He especially enjoyed his coffee group. Boyd was a 50-year member of the Sac City Fire Department, member of Occidental Masonic Lodge of Sac City, ABU BEKR Shrine Temple of Sioux City, and the Sac City Country Club.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Arline Elizabeth Waller; his son Gordon Boyd Waller and his wife Sonya of Fort Dodge, IA; daughter-in-law, Carol Waller of Tucson, AZ; four grandchildren: Darcie Howard of Tucson, AZ; Mike (Triny) Waller of Fort Dodge, IA; Troy (Michelle) Waller of Fort Dodge, IA; Janelle (Mark) Becker of Kingsland, GA; four great-grandchildren: Brandon, Sydney, Kylie, and Quinn; and extended family members.
Boyd was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Stuart and Dean Waller; sisters Ardis Parkinson and Charlaine Wolter; and son, Larry Duane Waller, Feb. 11, 1998.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 24th, 2:00 p.m., at the First Christian Church in Sac City, with Reverend Sharla Hulsey officiating. Joyce Irwin, Steve Pullen, and Marilyn Phillips will provide special music. Pallbearers include the following: John Montag, Larry Birt, Harold Peyton, Jack Phillips, Dale Duncan, and Herb Mahler. Burial will be at the Oakland Cemetery in Sac City under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.
Visitation will be Thursday, September 23rd, 5:00-7:00 pm, at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City.
Bernice Robinson
Bernice Mae Robinson, age 89, of Wall Lake, Iowa, passed away Friday, May 14, 2004, at Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake. Bernice was born on July 8, 1914, the daughter of Charles and Cora (Brogdon) Cose. She attended school in Deloit, Iowa, and graduated from Sioux City Academy of Beauty School in 1934. She was of the Methodist faith.
Bernice was united in marriage to Walter Quandt in Magnolia, Iowa, on October 18, 1935. They lived in the Denison area until he passed away in 1951. On January 10, 1954, Bernice and Cleo Robinson were married at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.
Bernice worked as a salesperson at the J.C. Penny’s Store in Denison and later worked as a crossing guard in California, until she retired 23 years ago. She and Cleo were very involved with in A.A. and AL-ANON meetings. She enjoyed crocheting, playing cards with her friends and family, camping, and dancing. She especially loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren.
Survivors include her sons: Wayne Quandt and his wife Linda of Kingsville, TX, Veryl Dean Robinson and his wife Cheri of Rockvale, TN, and Kenneth Robinson and his wife Mary Ann of Junction City, CA; her daughters, Bernadeen Steinkamp of Wall Lake, and Colleen Nissen and her husband Glenn also of Wall Lake; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; a sister Opal Hansen of Denison, Iowa; extended family members and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Walter in 1951; husband Cleo in 2003; a daughter Adaleen; two brothers, Wayne and DeOrr; four sisters: Ruby, Mildred, Myrtle, and Benjie; and a son-in-law, Paul Steinkamp.
Funeral services for Bernice are Wednesday, May 19, 2004, 11:00 a.m., at Lakes United Methodist Church in Lake View, Iowa, with Reverend Rick Johnson officiating, and Marilyn Hundling, organist. Bernice’s granddaughters will be the honorary pallbearers and the pallbearers will be the following: Terry Steinkamp, Steven Nissen, Jim Steinkamp, Danny Robinson, Todd Steinkamp, Wayne Nissen, John Robinson, and Patrick Anderson. Burial will be at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Denison at 2:00 p.m. under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.
Visitation is Tuesday, May 18th, 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Wall Lake.
Bernadine Jettre
Services for Bernadine Jettre, age 86, of Lytton, are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 9, at the Emanuel - St. John Lutheran Church in Lytton. Visitation is at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City from 4:00 - 8:00 Monday. Bernadine is survived by her son, Orville of Lytton and a sister, Lilly Helmbrecht of Lytton.
Bernadine Sophia Minnie Jettre, age 86,of Lytton, Iowa, passed away on Friday, May 5, 2006, at the Trinity Regional Medical Center, Fort Dodge.
Bernadine Schwartz was born January 13, 1920, in Cedar Township, Sac County, Iowa, the youngest daughter of Ludwig and Maria (Hillmer) Schwartz.
She received Holy Baptism on January 23, 1921, by Pastor R.C. Dahlke. In the Rite of Confirmation, she confessed Jesus Christ as her only Lord and Savior, on March 20, 1932, by Pastor H.C. Gold at the Emanuel-St. John Lutheran Church in Lytton. Bernadine received her education at the Lytton Consolidated School, graduating with the class of 1937.
She worked for farmers as a hired girl and in WW II she helped run the baler during haying time and also helped with the corn harvest. In 1951, she was united in marriage to Orville L. Jettre at the Emanuel-St. John Lutheran Church in Lytton. After the death of her husband, she worked as Secretary and Treasure for the Lytton Telephone Company. Later, she began working as an egg candler, working in Sac City and Lytton for 33 years, retiring in 1986.
Bernadine was a lifetime member of Emanuel-St. John Lutheran Church, President of the Dorcas Circle for many years until it dissolved and then she joined Ruth Circle, was very involved in do days, piecing many quilts at home to take to the church to finish. She was also the head organizer of the Senior Citizen Dinners for five years at our church. She enjoyed her Iris garden and sharing them with her neighbors.
Bernadine is survived by her son, Orville H. Jettre and sister, Lilly Helmbrecht both of Lytton, and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Orville; two brothers, Fred and his wife Christine Schwartz and an infant, four sisters, Tillie and husband Heiko Everts, Clara Schwartz, Mary and husband Theodore Smidt, and Emma Schwartz; and two brothers-in-law, Alvin Diersen and Walter Helmbrecht.
Betty Ewing
Betty Elaine Ewing, age 78, of Sac City, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge, IA.
Betty Elaine Hurst was born on May 6, 1926, in Webster City, Iowa, the daughter of George and Leona (Linnehann) Hurst. She grew up in the Webster City area and attended Webster City Schools until the family moved to Baltimore, Maryland. She later received her G.E.D. as an adult at the age of 52. During their time in Baltimore, she worked in an assembly plant on B-26 bombers for the war effort. The Hurst family was voted the most patriotic family in Baltimore, during WWII, for their involvement in the civilian war effort.
On December 29, 1949, Betty was united in marriage to Donald Roy “Skip” Ewing at the Methodist Church Parsonage in Webster City, IA. To this union four daughters were born: Connie, Kay, Karen, and Cindy. Betty was a homemaker and often held waitress positions throughout Iowa and Minnesota. The Ewing family was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia in 1965. In 1990 Betty moved to Sac City where she babysat her three grandsons for seven years.
Betty had many interests and hobbies. She was a talented sketch artist, dabbled in oil painting, quilting, needlework, liked to decorate her home, enjoyed gardening, and loved to bake for her family. She was a strong political activist and a fan of the Chicago Bulls.
Survivors include her daughters: Connie and husband Harry Fett of Muscatine, IA, Kay and husband Tim Magill of Pocahontas, IA, Karen Anderson of Harlan, IA, and Cindy Ewing of Sac City, IA; six grandchildren: Tonya Magill, Meghan Ernst and husband Scott, Scott Fett, and Jake, Luke, and Erik Von Glan. Other survivors include her sister, Jo Park and husband Lyle of Webster City, IA; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Skip in 1977; two sisters: Georgianna Schwandt and Martha Ruskell; and her two brothers: Darrell Hurst and Russell Hurst in infancy.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 17th, 10:30 am, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sac City with Pastor Mark Selby officiating. Betty’s six grandchildren will be pallbearers. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery, Webster City, Iowa, at 1:30 pm., under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.
Visitation will be Friday, July 16th, from 4:00-8:00 pm at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City.
Arlene McDonald
Arlene E. McDonald, age 89, of Sac City, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at Park View Care Center in Sac City. Arlene E. Borchert was born on December 3, 1914, Coon Valley Township, Sac County, Iowa, the daughter of William and Ora (Reiman) Borchert. Arlene was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and a lifetime member. She grew to womanhood on a farm in rural Sac City and attended rural parochial and country school.
On August 30, 1940, Arlene was united in marriage to Fred L. McDonald at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. To this union two daughters were born: Mardelle and Jennifer. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She worked at a factory, and also was employed in private homes. Arlene liked to sew, work in her garden, and take care of her many flowers. Some of her favorite memories are of vacation trips taken with her family.
She was an active member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, president of Ladies Aid, Sunday school teacher for 8 years, and custodian for 20 years.
Survivors include her daughters: Mardelle Bliek, and Jennifer Rench and her husband Thomas all of Sioux City, IA; three grandchildren: Brandice Bliek of Sioux City and Tara and Channa Rench of Omaha, NE; brother-in-law Gerald Casey of Rockwell City, IA; and many nieces and nephews.
Arlene was preceded in death by her parents, William and Ora Borchert; husband Fred McDonald, December 11, 1981; her sister and brother-in-law Ada and John Mohr; sister Carma Casey; and son-in-law Donald Bliek.
Funeral service for Arlene is Saturday, March 20th, 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church with Reverend H. W. Kramer officiating and Dee Meyer organist. The flower committee consists of Lee Schultz, Judy Mau, and Kathy Reynolds. Pallbearers include the following: Marlin Meyer, Harlan Meyer, Dana Dettmann, Ken Wise, Jr., Harlan Reynolds, and Tim Glasnapp. Burial will be at the St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.
Visitation is Friday, March 19th from 3:00-8:00 pm with family present from 6:00-8:00 at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City.
Alice R. Mauer
Alice R. Mauer, age 90, of Sac City, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa, from a sudden illness.
Alice Roberta Sleight was born March 7, 1914, at Odebolt, Iowa, to Robert H. and Grace (Nellist) Sleight. She attended rural and public schools and graduated from Odebolt High School in 1931.
On February 18, 1933, she was united in marriage to John (Jack) Mauer of Sac City. To this union were born two children: Gary of Lake Crystal, MN, and Nancy Larson of Johnston, IA.
Alice joined the First Christian Church of Sac City in 1952. She was active in Sunday school, C.W.F. and served as a deaconess.
She worked at the Coast-to-Coast store for 11 years; she also worked at Casey’s, the bakery, Gambles, Public Library, courthouse and the outreach center.
Survivors include her son, Gary Mauer and his wife Hazel of Lake Crystal, MN, her daughter Nancy Larson and her husband Al of Johnston, IA; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law: Ruby Nelson of Sac City, IA, and Dorothy Sleight of Odebolt, IA; several nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents; husband Jack, and her brother Lyle Sleight.
Funeral services will be Friday, May 7, 2004, 10:30 a.m., at the First Christian Church in Sac City with Reverend Sharla Hulsey officiating. Frank Pontious will provide special music accompanied by Joyce Irwin. Pallbearers include Gary Mauer, Jr., Chad Larson, Roger Sleight, Jim Mason, Harold Peyton, and Kenneth Stoelting. Burial will be at the Oakland Cemetery in Sac City under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.
