Ernest Bartenhagen, 83, of Muscatine , died Monday, September 1, 2003 at his home. Funeral services will be Friday, September 5, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. Pastor Gerry Kahler will officiate the services. Casketbearers are Jack Wilson, Don Wilson, Dick Wilson, Rick Bartenhagen, George Taylor, and Wayne Shoultz. Honorary casketbearers will be Ernest’s nephews. Burial will be at Muscatine Memorial Park . Following the interment, a time of fellowship will be held at the Island Methodist Church . Visitation for Ernest will be held on Thursday, September 4, 2003 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the Island Methodist Church . Ernest Ralph Bartenhagen was born July 15, 1920 in Muscatine to Fred and Helena Freida Maria Baars Bartenhagen. He married Wanda Reinier on November 1, 1941 in Mystic, Iowa . Ernest was a member of the Island Methodist Church , past member of the Muscatine Island Co-op, served on the L&M School Board for over 20 years where he was a past president, past member of the Moose Lodge and also served on the Farm Bureau Board. He farmed in the Muscatine area for many years. Ernest enjoyed going to the Senior Citizens to play cards and reading. Ernest was also known for his creative engineering.
Ernest will be deeply missed by his children; Fred Bartenhagen and his wife, Joan of Muscatine, Keith Bartenhagen of Muscatine, Roger Bartenhagen and his wife, Rebecca of Muscatine, Kathy Lund and her husband, Chris of Wasilla, Alaska, and Karen Varnum and her husband, Jeff of Wapello; twelve grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren and two step great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Wanda; two brothers, Harold and Richard; two sisters, Dora Boyle and Johanna Shoultz.
Richard (Dick) Hills
June 17, 1927 - September 6, 2003
Richard (Dick) Hills, 76, of Columbus Junction, Iowa, died Saturday, September 6, 2003 at his home in Muscatine, Iowa. Funeral services will be Wednesday, September 10, 2003 at 2:00PM at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home, Columbus Junction, Iowa. Pastor Cathy Whitlatch will officiate. Casketbearers will be Marvin Cutler, Larry Cutler, Harley Cutler, Johnny Mickie, Randy Griffin, and Vernon Rode. Honorary Bearers will be Art Pugh, Earl Scott, Bob Meeker, Sam Sands, Ray Boulton, and Melchor Ramos. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 9th, at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home from 4-7pm. Dick was born June 17, 1927 in Columbus Junction to Addison and Margaret (Sheridan) Hills. He Graduated from Columbus High School in 1945. He served in the U.S. Army. Dick married Lois Chamberlin on March 24, 1956, in Lancaster, Missouri. He retired from Rath Packing Plant and worked many years in the family's business, Hills Excavating, in Columbus Junction. Dick was a member of the Musician's Union for many years. He enjoyed music and singing and playing with numerous local bands in Iowa and Illinois for over 50 years. One of his greatest pleasures was playing in a band and making new musician friends. Dick's family and friends will always remember his smile and great sense of humor. Dick loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Dick will be dearly missed by his wife, Lois, of Muscatine; 2 daughters, Deborah Tompkins and her husband, Bruce, of Rapid City, South Dakota, and Sherry Buffington of Columbus Junction; 5 sons, Richie of Columbus Junction, Robert (Bob), George and his wife, Darla, William(Bill) and wife, SuAnn, all of Muscatine, Douglas and wife, Inge, of Schwaubhasen, Germany; 1 brother, Bill and his wife Karyn of Columbus Junction;10 grandchildren, Joy Gabel and her husband Brian of Cheyenne, WY, Amanda, Ashley, Dewayne, Adam, and Dakota Hills, all of Muscatine, Casey Buffington and Dustin Buffington and his wife Pam, all of Columbus Junction, and Nadine and Christian Hills of Schwaubhasen, Germany; 4 great grandchildren, Briana and Gabbi Gabel of Cheyenne, WY, and Jacie and Hunter Buffington of Columbus Junction; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dick is preceded in death by one stillborn son, his parents, a sister, Vivian and a brother, Ronald.
William "Bill" Arthur Calvelage

William “Bill” Arthur Calvelage, 76, of Muscatine , died Tuesday, September 9, 2003 at Genesis West Medical Center . Funeral services will be held Friday, September 12 , 2003 at 1:30 p.m. at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. Pastor Gerry Kahler of Fellowship United Methodist Church will officiate. Casketbearers are Richard Neipert, Winfred “Corky” Miller, Barry Dicks, Ted Reynolds Sr., Teddy Reynolds Jr., Pete Calvelage, Steven Calvelage, and Bill Stickrod. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery . Following the interment, a time of food and fellowship will be held at the Musserville United Methodist Church . Visitation for Bill will be held on Thursday, September 11, 2003 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. Bill was born on January 17, 1927 in New Era the son of George and Hazel McCullough Calvelage. He first married Clara Rowe and he later married Judy Fenske on January 7, 1968 at Our Savior Lutheran Church. Bill worked at Grain Processing in the Maintenance Department for 22 ˝ years and for several years before that he worked construction in the building of Grain Elevators. He was a member of the Local 86 Distillery, Wine and Allied Workers International Union. Bill enjoyed reading Westerns and loved nature by watching and feeding birds and squirrels.
Bill will be deeply missed by his wife, Judy of Muscatine; his daughter, Julie Kennedy and her husband Craig of Muscatine; three grandchildren, Melissa Sherer and her husband Joshua of Des Moines, Samantha and Kayleigh Kennedy of Muscatine; two great-grandchildren, Ethan and Dylan Sherer; one brother, Donald Calvelage and his wife Bea of Columbus Junction; and one sister, Dorothy Sizek of Hot Springs, Arkansas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Clara in 1963, one son, Keith in 1973, one sister, and two brothers.
WARREN (TAG) WILSON, age 86 of Randolph, IA, died Saturday, April 12, 2003 at Tabor Manor Care Center in Tabor, IA following an extended illness. Tag was born June 22, 1916 in Pacific Junction, IA to Richard H. Wilson and Georgia (Harmer) Wilson. He was married December 2, 1944 to Helen Bobb in Reading, PA. Tag owned and operated his own hardware store in Randolph for many years and was a member of the Randolph Presbyterian Church, Rommel-Conklin VFW Post #7064 of Tabor, Nishnabotany Lodge #153 AF & AM, U.S. Army 70th Infantry Division Trailblazers, and a 50 year member of the IOOF in Randolph.
Tag was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, Leona Howery and Ruby Pearson, and 3 brothers, Wendell, Daniel and Richard Wilson. He is survived by his wife, Helen Wilson of Randolph, IA; 2 daughters, Marjorie Thornburg and husband Al of Essex, IA and Elaine Fowler and husband James of Aguila, AZ; 3 grandchildren, Jeffery, David and Matthew Thornburg; great grandson, Colton Thornburg; numerous nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.
PEARL DOTY, age 91 of Sidney, IA, died Monday, April 7, 2003 at the Sidney Health Center following an extended illness. Pearl was born January 21, 1912 in Nebraska City, NE to Elderado R. McCord and Mary F. (Tyson) McCord. She was married November 7, 1928 to Lee W. Doty and worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse for many years at Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, IA. Pearl was a member of the Sidney Church of Christ.
Pearl was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lee Doty; son, Bill Doty; 2 sisters, Helen Rhoades and Ruth Rakestraw; and 2 brothers, Charlie and Junior McCord. She is survived by 4 grandchildren, Carol Kearns and husband John of Disney, OK, Craig Doty and wife Chris of Dallas, TX, Brian Doty, and Brad Doty and wife Lori all of Sidney, IA; 11 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren; sister, Mary Wolfe of Lincoln, NE; sister-in-law Shirley McCord of Nebraska City, NE; daughter-in-law, Jeanne Doty of Sidney; numerous nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
ALICE I. HENRY, age 86 of Loveland, CO formerly of Sidney, IA died Thursday, April 3, 2003 at Hospice Care Center at McGee Medical Center in Loveland, CO following an extended illness. Alice was born April 16, 1916 in Sidney, IA to James E. Allen and Hazel (Brown) Allen. She was married December 10, 1935 in to Noel D. Henry in Sidney. Alice and Noel moved from Sidney to Loveland in 1963 where she owned and operated the SudNut Donut Shop for many years and later worked for the Salvation Army. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Sidney and then in Loveland.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, husband Noel D. Henry, 2 sisters, and 3 brothers. She is survived by 2 daughters, Norma Rucker of Shenandoah, IA and Judy Williams and husband David of Hasty, CO; son, Bill Henry and wife Marvis of Loveland, CO; 6 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild; brother, William Allen of Parachute, CO; daughter-in-law, Dorothy Allen of Loveland; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends
LYLE OLSEN, age 83 of Sidney, IA died Tuesday, April 1, 2003 at the Sidney Health Care Center after an extended illness. Lyle was born April 29, 1919 in Hartington, NE to Ludwig A. Olsen and Agnes (McGee)Olsen. He was married April 29, 1942 to Irene Harris in Wynot, NE. Lyle and Irene lived in several communities including Wynot, NE, Omaha, NE and Yuma, AZ. He retired from Eaton Corporation in Shenandoah in 1983 after service for 11 years as a Security Officer and was a member of the Sidney United Methodist Church.
Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, and 2 brothers, Ralph and Alton Olsen. He is survived by his wife, Irene of Olsen of Sidney, IA; daughter, Carol Seitz and husband Jim of Lewiston, ID; 3 sons, Ken Olsen of Omaha, NE, Larry Olsen and wife Deana of Edmond, OK, and Clay Olsen and wife Sharon of Emerald Isle, NC; 11 grandchildren, Aubree Olsen of Edmond, Todd Olsen of Philadelphia, PA, Jimmy Seitz and Sandy Self both of Omaha, Kimberly Barnard, Kelly Kuhlman, and Joe Seitz all of Lewiston, Jeff Olsen of Parker, CO, Sara Olsen, Beth Olsen, and Nathan Olsen all of Emerald Isle, 4 Great Grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.
ANN ALICE BLOEDEL, age 84 of Tabor, IA, died Saturday, March 8, 2003 at Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, IA following a brief illness. Ann was born March 30, 1918 near Tabor, IA to Leonard Patterson and Nattie (McClure) Patterson. She worked at Glenwood State Hospital School in the dietary department for over 20 years, and was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a founding member of the Tabor Public Library.
Ann was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Robert, and 3 sisters, Phyllis, Ailene, and Gertrude. She is survived by a daughter, Roberta Lane of Canon City, CO; 5 sons, Bruce Bloedel and wife Linda of Cedar Rapids, IA, David Bloedel of Seattle, WA, Brian Bloedel and wife Renee of Parksley, VA, Andrew Bloedel of Palm Springs, CA, and Paul Bloedel and wife Kathy of Tabor, IA; 10 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild; brother, Edward Patterson of Anchorage, AK; numerous nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.
O’DELL KEPHART, age 79 of Sidney, IA, died Saturday, March 8, 2003 at Jennie Edmunson Hospital in Council Bluffs, IA following a brief illness. O’Dell was born June 10, 1923 near Thurman, IA to Clyde F. Kephart, Sr. and Alva M. (Study) Kephart. On April 9, 1948, he was married to Bessie Hunley in Bartlett, IA. O’Dell worked for Burlington Railroad and later Union Pacific Railroad putting in 35 years before retiring. He attended the Sidney Church Of Christ and had been a resident of the Sidney and Tabor, Iowa area for many years.
O’Dell was preceded in death by his parents; 3 sisters, Florence Birdsley, Erma Curtis and Ruby Atkinson; and 4 brothers, Clark, Bill, Frank (Bus) and Barney Kephart. He is survived by his wife, Bessie Kephart of Sidney, IA; 2 sons, Larry Kephart and wife Dona of Greenburg, PA and Dennis Kephart and wife Cathy of Tabor, IA; 5 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren; sister, Evelyn Brunsvold and husband Ennis of Havlontown, IA; and brother, Rolland Kephart and wife Rosetta of Joplin, MO; numerous nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.
CONNIE JEAN SCHOOLEY HARRIS, age 57 of Thurman, IA died Thursday March 6, 2003 at her home unexpectedly. Connie was born September 5, 1945 in Thurman, IA to Clarence G. Schooley and Alene J. (Reed) Schooley. She was married September 23, 1963 to Carl E. Harris in Glenwood, IA. Connie was a member of the Bartlett Community Church, the Sidney Church of Christ, the Pythian Sisters and the Bartlett Bible Study Group. She worked for several years at the Glenwood, Iowa State Hospital School as a chef and a nurse’s aid.
Connie was preceded in death by her father, brother Larry Schooley, and mother-in-law, Lydia Harris. She is survived by her husband, Carl E. Harris of Thurman, IA; 2 sons, Neal D. Harris and wife Betty of Omaha, NE and Shawn E. Harris and wife Kathleen of Council Bluffs, IA; mother, Alene Schooley of Sidney, IA; 5 grandchildren, Ben and Tara Harris, Dalton, Makayla, and Tanner Harris; 2 sisters, Sharlyn Trudell of Thurman, IA and Sheila McCollum of Sidney; aunt, Marjorie Stevens of Ralston, NE; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
EUGENE MILLER, age 85 of Sidney, IA died Monday, March 3, 2003 at Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, IA following an extended illness. Eugene was born December 22, 1917 in Lincoln, NE to Alexander C. Miller and Flora (Mark) Miller. He was married August 22, 1938 to Mary Murphy in Lincoln. Eugene attended Lincoln High School and is in their Hall of Fame for football. He attended the University of Nebraska and Peru State College. He was retired from the Iowa Conservation Service and served as a Sidney City Councilman and Mayor of Sidney for a time. Eugene was a member of the Sidney Presbyterian Church.
Eugene was preceded in death by his parents and 2 sisters, Venita Pedersen and Norma Dain. He is survived by his wife, Mary Miller of Sidney, IA; 2 sons, Gene Miller of Glenwood, IA and Stephen Miller and wife Liz if Cunningham, KS; 3 grandchildren, Brent Miller of Wichita, KS, Kelly Perkins and husband Jesse of Glenwood, and Kerry Peters and husband Matt of Overland Park, KS; great grandchildren Nicholas and Nathan Perkins; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
