VIRGINIA L. MAXWELL age 89 of Tabor, IA died on Thursday, February 3, 2005 at Tabor Manor Care Center in Tabor, IA following an extended illness. Virginia was born November 15, 1915 in Lincoln township, Montgomery County, Iowa to Donald William Woods and Bernice Louise (Carlson) Woods. On September 21, 1935, she was married to Oakley Lloyd Maxwell in Red Oak, IA. Virginia was a member of the Tabor, IA First Christian Church. She was an avid gardener and active in the Christian Women’s Fellowship at the church.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Oakley Lloyd Maxwell; daughter, Dianna Louise Lorimor; 4 sisters, Eleanor Richards, Dorothy Fulkerson, Helen Thoren, and Erma Barr; 3 brothers, Syke, Charles, and James Donald Woods; 2 sons in law, Walter Dean Carnes and Bernard Lorimor. She is survived by 3 daughters, Donna Darlene Carnes of Carrollton, TX, Shirley A. Hill-Marshall & husband Edward of Council Bluffs, IA, and Marsha Jean Sowers and husband Richard of Emerson, IA; 7 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; 1 great great granddaughter, 3 brothers, Dean Woods of Red Oak, IA, Clement Woods of LaVista, NE and Paul Woods and wife Joyce of Treynor, IA; sister in law, Letha Van Horn of Tarkio, MO; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
HOWARD ORIE GLASGOW, age 87 of Sidney, IA died Thursday, February 3, 2005 at Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, IA following an extended illness. Howard was born March 30, 1917 in Springfield, NE to Ira Glasgow and Mary Ann “Molly” (Cahill) Glasgow. On February 21, 1941 he married Eileen Chambers at in Des Moines, IA. Howard was a life member of the Williams-Jobe-Gibson American Legion Post #128 of Sidney, the Rommel-Conklin VFW Post #7064 of Tabor, and the Nishnabotany Lodge #153 AF&AM. He served 8 years on the Rodeo Board and served on the Sidney Board of Education. Howard was a Master Sargent in the United States Army, 110th Combat Engineers-Pacific Theatre in World War II.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents; 4 sisters, Martha Bills, Hazel Heslep, Myrtle Christianson, and Mary Rist; 5 brothers, Presley, Walter, Steve, EuGene, and Floyd Glasgow. He is survived by his wife Eileen Glasgow of Sidney, IA; 2 daughters, Donna Seagert and husband Dick of North Manchester, IN, Teresa Glasgow and Jim Kerr of Minneapolis, MN; 2 sons, Larry Glasgow of Sidney, IA, and Craig Glasgow and Jennifer Deter of Percival, IA; sister, Grace Racine of Sidney, IA, 3 grandchildren, Ryan Seargert and Rory and Jennifer Lindsay; and 2 great grandchildren, Jacob and Rebekah Seagert; nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.
RUBY L. HAYES, age 87 of Lincoln, NE formerly of Apache Junction, AZ and Tabor, IA died Saturday, June 14, 2003 at Homestead Health Center in Lincoln, NE following an extended illness. Ruby was born February 15, 1916 near Hamburg, IA to Walter A. Baker and Ruth C. (Means) Baker. On March 31, 1935, she was married to Buel Hayes in Hamburg, IA. She worked for many years with Fairbanks and Morse in Omaha, NE and also clerked at sales around Tabor and Nebraska City. Ruby attended the Christian Church in Hamburg, Tabor, and then Apache Junction.
Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Buel; and a sister, Vera Taylor Collins. She is survived by 2 sisters, Eula Neeley of Nebraska City, NE and Ramona Buttercase and husband Lynn of Watson, MO; brother, Everett Baker and wife Betty of Lincoln, NE; numerous nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.
ALVA C. KEMPTON, age 86 of Tabor, IA, died Tuesday, May 27, 2003 at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, IA following an extended illness. Alva was born October 6, 1916 in Tabor, IA to Alonzo Lee Kempton and Margaret Alice (Rhodes) Kempton. He and his family were involved in the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Tabor for many years. Alva was a charter member of the Rommel-Conklin VFW Post #7064 of Tabor. During World War II, Alva served with the US Navy for 3 years in the South Pacific and was awarded 13 Battle Stars.
Alva was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Nancy Bolejack; 4 brothers, Scott, Lisle, Dale and Faye Kempton; former spouse, Bertha E. Kempton, and former companions, Darlene Thomas and Ruth Cowarden. He is survived by his; 2 daughters, Susan Travis and husband Glen of Thurman, IA and Lori Kawecki of Omaha, NE; 2 sons, Richard Kempton and wife Joann of Lincoln, NE and Michael Kempton and wife Nancy of Corning, IA; 9 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren; former wife, Bertha Mae Dick of Carbon, IA; numerous nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.
THELMA WALKER age 78 of Randolph, IA died on Wednesday, December 14, 2005 at Tabor Manor Care Center in Tabor, IA following an extended illness. Thelma was born June 15, 1927 in Shenandoah, IA to Lloyd Avery Taylor and Sylvia Pearl (Hankins) Taylor. On April 4, 1969, she was married to Jack Walker in Nebraska City, NE. Thelma worked at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital and for the Tall Corn Motel in Shenandoah for a short time.
Thelma was preceded in death by her parents; 1 sister, Norma Tull and 2 brothers, Eldon and Ivan Taylor. She is survived by her husband, Jack Walker of Randolph, IA; 2 sons, Dennis Lee Miller of Red Oak, IA, Curtis Lee Miller and wife Barb of Thurman, IA; 2 step daughters, Anette Walker of St. Joseph, MO, Deanna Griffith and husband John of Shenandoah, IA; 2 step sons, John Walker and wife Vickie of Greely, CO, and David Walker of Tabor, IA; 13 grandchildren, and several great grandchildren; 1 sister, Lois Maher and special friend, Dennis Berry of Shenandoah, IA; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
LAVON ALM, age 74 of Tabor, IA died on Wednesday, December 14, 2005 following an extended illness. LaVon was born January 19, 1931 in Tabor, IA to Wallace Winfield Ballinger and Verta Jeanette (Christopher) Ballinger. She graduated from Tabor High School in 1948 and enrolled in nurses training at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, IA, graduating in 1951. LaVon was employed at Grape Community Hospital and worked for doctors in Chicago and Malvern and finally for Dr. K.D. Rodabaugh in Tabor. On November 20, 1959, she was married to Don Alm. Some time after moving to Tabor Don and LaVon opened a clothing store on Main Street to which they later added a cleaning business and worked together there for 28 years. They enjoyed two trips to Sweden, where Don was born, and visited some of his relatives. While they were in Sweden Don was able to recall his native language which made the trip that much more enjoyable.
LaVon was preceded in death by her parents, Wally and Jeanette Ballinger; husband, Don Alm; and brother, Charles Ballinger. She is survived by her sister, Jackie McClellan and husband Jack of Union City, CA; 2 nieces, Kathy Karnitz and Kim Quadros and husband Randy; 1 great nephew, Andrew Karnitz; and other relatives and friends.
J. MERRIL BRANDT age 73 of Tabor, IA died unexpectedly on Wednesday, November 30, 2005 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Merril was born July 8, 1932 in Tabor, IA to John Brandt and Nora Belle (Enterline) Brandt. On July 26, 1960, he was married to Leota Melton in Sioux Falls, SD. Merril graduated from Tabor High School in 1951. He worked for Swift in Glenwood before going into the United States Army and upon his return continued his work in Glenwood and Omaha Packing Companies until his death on November 30. Merril and his wife purchased and owned a small farm near Sidney since 1962. He was a member of the Tabor Church of the Nazarene.
Merril was preceded in death by his parents; and 5 brothers, Dellis, Paul, Eber, Neil and James in infancy. He is survived by his wife Leota Brandt of Tabor, IA; daughter, Merrilee Brant of East Tawas, MI; 3 sons, Clifford Brandt and wife Janice of Olathe, KS, Forrest Brandt and wife Cathy of Osawatomie, KS, Stephen Brandt ad wife Marli of Kansas City, KS; 9 grandchildren, Joshua, Allyson, Annie, Zachary, Alec Benjamin, Emily, Garrison, and Haven; sister, Lorraine Melton of Sidney, IA, Mary Freed of Tabor, IA; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Pearl M. Hagist, 93, of Muscatine died Monday, September 8, 2003 at the Lutheran Homes in Muscatine . Funeral services will be held Friday, September 12, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home in Muscatine . Pastor Ray Oehme of Vineyard Christian Fellowship will officiate. Visitation for Pearl will be Thursday, September 11, 2003 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery . A time of food and fellowship will follow intermenty at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Community Room. Memorials may be directed to the Lutheran Homes in memory of Pearl . Pearl Marie Gray was born January 1, 1910 in Muscatine , the daughter of Tony and Mary (Mittlander) Gray. On February 7, 1942 , Pearl was united in marriage to George A. Hagist in Memphis , Missouri . She graduated from Muscatine High School in 1928 and later became the bookkeeper at Kent Feeds Inc. for 10 years and also at Iowa Electric Light and Power for 18 years. Pearl was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and also was a Sunday school teacher for many years. George and Pearl enjoyed their retirement years camping and fishing until ill health forced them to stop.
Pearl is survived by her son, David Hagist and his wife Eileen of Bancroft, Iowa; three grandchildren, Paul Adam Hagist and his wife, Jessica of Muscatine, Jill Beaty and her husband Keith of Graham, Texas, and Vanessa Hagist of Muscatine; two great grandchildren, Dalton Hagist and Abbi Beaty; one sister-in-law, Beverly Gray of Richmond, Missouri; as well as, many nieces and nephews.
Pearl was preceded in death by her parents, husband George in 1999, and one brother, Maynard Gray in 1991.
EVELYN UMPHREYS, age 71 of Thurman, IA, died Saturday, August 2, 2003 at Rison Son Christian Village in Council Bluffs, IA following an extended illness. Evelyn was born June 22, 1932 in Adams County near Creston, IA to George H. Hayes and Bernice (Gourley) Hayes. On December 17, 1955, she was married to Robert C. Umphreys in Omaha, NE. Evelyn enjoyed sewing and crafting things for her family and friends as well as selling some of them.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband Bob Umphreys; son, Robert L. Umphreys; grandson, Ryan Umphreys; sister, Mary Margaret Hayes; and 2 brothers, Kenneth Hayes and George Hayes, Jr. She is survived by a daughter, Teresa Hayes of Glenwood, IA; 2 sons, Rodney Umphreys, Sr. and wife Sandra of Thurman, IA and David Umphreys and wife Cheryl of Little Falls, MN; 9 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren; 4 sisters, and 7 brothers; numerous nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.
GRANT E. SMITH, age 74 of Tabor, IA died Friday, July 25, 2003 at Tabor Manor Care Center in Tabor, IA following an extended illness. Grant was born July 4, 1929 near Sidney, IA to Charles Wesley Smith and Della White Smith. He attended school in Sidney and spent all his younger years in the Sidney – Knox area. He was married to Lois Brammer on April 15, 1951 at Thurman, IA. Grant and Lois raised six children. He served two years in the U.S. Army.
He worked 27 years for the Swift Packing House in Omaha, NE. His later years were spent working for Pepsi-Cola in Shenandoah and then for local farmer’s in the Tabor and Glenwood area. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Grant enjoyed raising and training horses and in later years enjoyed helping his daughter, Donna, with her horses.
Grant was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Della Smith. He is survived by 5 daughters, Ilene and husband Bob Kauffman of Council Bluffs, IA, Sandra Reed of Carter Lake, IA, Cheryl Allen and husband Mike of Sidney, Donna Wake and husband Chuck of Randolph, and Cindy McCann and husband Frank of Tabor; son, Roger Smith and wife Robin of Glenwood, IA; 17 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren; 3 sisters, Evelynn Whipple and husband James of Clarinda, IA, Ila Gray and husband Denzil and Darlene Wampler and husband Donald all of Nebraska City, NE; 4 brothers, Russell Smith and wife Marietta of DesMoines, IA, Donald Smith and wife Mary Ann of Rosalie, NE, Kenneth Smith and wife Dora of Northboro, IA and Wendell Smith and wife Sherrie of Sidney, IA; numerous nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.
RUTH I. RICE, age 74 of Sidney, IA died Sunday, September 28, 2003 surrounded by her family at Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, IA following an extended illness. Ruth was born May 30, 1929 in Thurman, IA to Charles Elmer Garreans and Ressa (Wilbur) Garreans. Ruth worked as the janitor for the Sidney First Presbyterian Church and the Fremont County Courthouse for many years. She cleaned for the Sidney, Iowa Post Office, Low Rent Housing, and for many private residences in the Sidney area. She was a member of the Sidney Church of Christ.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gene Rice; and 2 sisters, Evelyn Miller and Helen Simonson. She is survived by 2 sons, Michael Garreans and wife Jeanne of Bellevue, NE and Tony Rice of Sidney, IA; 2 grandchildren, William Garreans currently stationed in Germany and Joshua Garreans of Bellevue, NE; 1 great grandchild, Kiera Garreans of Bellevue, NE; 2 brothers, Arthur Garreans of Stover, MO and Paul Garreans of Plattsmouth, NE; numerous nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.
