DONALD R. REEVES, JR., age 52 of Sidney, IA died Tuesday, September 23, 2003 at Missouri Southern Healthcare in Dexter, Missouri from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. Donald was born January 25, 1951 in Hamburg, IA to Donald Ray Reeves, Sr. and Franceo Jane (LaMaster) Reeves. Don graduated from Sidney High School in 1969 and later attended Peru State College where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in science education and business. He was a member of the Western Star Masonic Lodge #2 in Nebraska City, NE. Don’s career in the financial service industry spanned 30 years, working for Farm and Ranch Life, Liberty American, United Trust, First Alliance, First American Capital, Mid-American Alliance, Arkansas Security Capital, Western States Alliance, and Mid American Century Life Insurance Company.
Donald was preceded in death by his grandparents, Lloyd and Florence LaMaster and Earl and Elsie Reeves; and a brother, Randy Reeves. He is survived by his fiancé, Carroll Monaghan of Sidney, IA; parents, Donald and Franceo Reeves of Council Bluffs, IA; 2 daughters, Jeanna Charles of Olathe, KS, and Kelly Reeves of Frankfurt, KY; son, Christopher Reeves of Frankfurt, KY; step daughter, Corey; 2 grandchildren; 3 sisters, Sandy Sheldon and husband Randy and Janie Magel and husband David all of Sidney, IA, Brenda Jochiemsen and husband Scott of Papillion, NE; 2 brothers, Bob Reeves and wife Debbie of Hamburg, IA and Kenny Reeves of Sidney, IA; numerous nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.
ETHYL ROBERTSON, age 92 of Sidney, IA, formerly of Wellington, KS, died Saturday, September 6, 2003 at Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, IA following a brief illness. Ethyl was born June 29, 1911 in Sweeny, TX to Marvin Bennett Shelton and Norma Rae (Robertson) Shelton. On May 20, 1928, she was married to Andrew J. “Jack” Robertson in Altus, OK. They moved from Altus to Wellington where Ethyl lived most of her life. She moved to the Health Center in Sidney 3 years ago to be near family. Ethyl was a life long member of the Wellington Church of Christ.
Ethyl was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jack Robertson; daughter, Norma Jean Robertson; 2 sons, Delmer and Darryl Robertson; 3 brothers, Dale, Jessie and Bobby; and 2 sisters, Joy, and Billie Jo. She is survived by her 5 grandchildren, Glenda Brickey of Springfield, MO, LouAnn Sornson of Nebraska City, NE, Tracy Holt of Sidney, IA, Wayne Tillman of Grand Prairie, TX, and Richard Tillman of Hamburg, IA; 6 great grandchildren, Ben Harris, Alyssa Greedy, Jake Holt, Layne Greedy, Clay Holt, and Marc Tillman; 2 great great grandchildren, Tiffany and Dakota Harris; 2 sisters, Pearl Erwin of Weatherford, TX and Lucille Brown of Corpus Christi, TX; brother, Leonard Shelton of Texas City, TX; daughter in law, Marie Robertson of Mangum, OK; mother of grandchildren, Elaine Carter and husband Don of Ben Wheeler, TX; numerous nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.
JOSEPHINE ETHELYN BENSON, age 96 of Nashville, TN, formerly of Sidney, IA died Friday, November 28, 2003 at Richland Health Care Center in Nashville, TN. Josephine was born December 5, 1905 in Sidney, IA to Aury Du Ward Benson and Alice (Frazer) Benson. She attended the New England Conservatory of Music and graduated from the Chandler School in Boston, Massachusetts. For several years she lived in Des Moines, IA, Milwaukee, WI and then in Los Angeles, CA, where she was the Business Manager for the John Thomas Dye School. She retired to Nashville to join some of her family. She was a member of Eastern Star, The DAR, a docent for the L.A. County Museum of Art, and a volunteer at Cheekwood. While in Los Angeles she was a member of the Wilshire United Methodist Church and attended Calvary United Methodist Church in Nashville. Recently she became a member of the Sidney United Methodist Church where she had been raised. Her deep love of her family endeared her to all her nieces and nephews and she will be greatly missed.
Josephine was preceded in death by her parents and 4 brothers, Frank, Maynard, Herbert, and Gilbert Benson and 1 sister, Mildred Benson Thornton. She is survived by 4 nieces, Beverly Collins and husband Robert of Marco Island, FL, Jane Wert and husband James of Nashville, TN, Linda Peterson and husband Richard of Lincoln, NE, Kaye Hummel and husband Larry of Tarkio, MO; 1 nephew, R. Lynn Benson and wife Marilyn of Sidney, IA; many grand nieces and nephews, many other relatives and friends.
HAROLD LEE REED, age 87 of Sidney, IA, died Sunday, November 30, 2003 at Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, IA following a brief illness. Lee was born April 14, 1916 near Possum Hollow in Fremont County, IA to Elmer L. Reed and Ethel (Mead) Reed. He was married on September 3, 1939 to Edna McCluskey in Council Bluffs, IA. Lee owned and operated his family’s store, Hummel Grocery, in Sidney for many years and was a member of the Sidney United Methodist Church.
Lee was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Edna; and 2 sisters, Donna Davis and Doris Otte. He is survived by a sister-in-law, Mildred Porter of Sidney; nephew, Stephen Porter and wife Linda of Thuman, IA; nieces, Linda Watkins and husband Ed of Plano, TX and their daughter Rachael, and Connie Otte of Des Moines, IA; and 1 great nephew, Christoper Porter of Shenandoah, IA; other relatives and friends.
HAZEL BLANCHE (ATKINSON) WILSON, age 91 of Randolph, IA died Thursday, November 27, 2003 at Gardenview Care Center in Shenandoah, IA following an extended illness. Hazel was born July 8, 1912 in Randolph, IA to Floyd W. Atkinson and Dorthea (Bliss) Atkinson. She was a member of the Randolph United Methodist Church and the Rebeka Lodge in Randolph. Hazel lived for several years in the Cold Creek Canyon area near Boulder, CO before living in Randolph.
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; former husband, Louis Wederquist; husband Daniel Wilson; and a sister, Ruth McLaughlin. She is survived by 2 sons, Don Wederquist and wife Jean of Urbandale, IA and Bill Wederquist and wife Merrilee of Prineville, OR; step son, Warren “Nub” Wilson of Kirksville, MO; 3 step daughters, Bartina Holden, Bonnie Smith and husband Robert, and Charlotte Wilson all of Randolph, IA; 7 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild; several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.
EARL BARRETT, age 87 of Sidney, IA died Friday, November 28, 2003 at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, NE following an extended illness. Earl was born August 21, 1916 in Hamburg, IA to Wright W. Barrett and Nettie (Luster) Barrett. On March 15, 1936, he was married to Iva Barnes in Sidney. Earl worked on the Road Crew for the Iowa Department of Transportation for over 20 years and was a member of the Riverton, IA Church of Christ and the Eagles Club in Nebraska City, NE.
Earl was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Iva Barrett; son, James Barrett; and 6 brothers, Willis, Frank, Dany, John, Fred, and Bert Barrett. He is survived by his son, Richard Barrett and wife Erma of Sidney, IA; sister, Jessie Long of Sidney; 2 grandchildren, Allen Johnson and wife Audrey of West Plaines, MO and Dawn Johnson of Ames, IA; 4 great grandchildren, Lacey Carpenter and husband Andy of Hope Mills, NC, Jeremiah and Jacob Johnson of West Plaines, and Joslyn Waelti-Johnson of Ames; 1 great great grandson, Drew Carpenter of Hope Mills; 4 sisters-in-law, Elaine Smith of Torrington, WY, Patsy Hume of Thurman, IA, Inez Powers of Bend, OR and Evelyn Shryer of Shenandoah, IA; 2 brothers-in-law, Richard Barnes of Dalton, GA and Dan Barnes of St. Louis, MO; numerous nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.
RAY AUSTIN PATTERSON, age 61 of Tabor, IA, died unexpectedly on Sunday, November 16, 2003 at Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, Iowa. Ray was born August 5, 1942 in Council Bluffs, IA to Ray Austin Patterson, Sr. and Ann (Woodruff) Patterson. On April 8, 1996 he was married to Margaret (Petrich) in Yellsburg, AR. Ray worked in the construction business as a roofing contractor.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Margaret of Tabor, IA; daughter, Christine Patterson of Beloite, WI; 2 sons, Nick Patterson and wife Kristy of Lena, IL and Todd Patterson and wife Sarah of Monroe, WI; 2 step daughters, Beth McCall and husband Kevin of Shenandoah, IA and Tami Moss and husband Kirk of Bellevue, NE; step son, Jared Peterman and wife Darlene of Laplace, LA; 5 grandchildren and 2 step grandchildren, many other relatives and friends.
LAYBOURN SEYMOUR, age 87 of Sidney, IA, died Sunday, November 16, 2003 at the Sidney Health Center following a brief illness. Laybourn was born June 21, 1916 near Anderson, IA to Otto W. Seymour and Mary (Shores) Seymour. He was married to Farrell Smith and worked as a farm laborer in the Anderson area. Laybourn also followed the harvest fields through many states including Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Minnesota all the way up to the Canadian border.
Laybourn was preceded in death by his parents and 4 brothers, Alfred (Slim), Elmer (Bake), Frank and Bill Seymour. He is survived by a sister, Gladys Dugger of Clarinda, IA; brother, Tilfred Seymour of Council Bluffs, IA; numerous nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
WENDELL W. WARD, age 83 of Sidney, IA died Monday, February 9, 2004 at the Sidney Health Center in Sidney following an extended illness. Wendell was born November 13, 1920 in Sidney, IA to George W. Ward and Ica Isabelle (Spittler) Ward. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II and worked on a River Boat before doing construction in the Sidney and Riverton area.
Wendell was preceded in death by his parents; 3 sisters, Esther Scherer, Dora Hustell, and Audrey Harris; and 2 brothers, Oscar and Edward Ward. He is survived by 2 sisters, Dorothy Jean Davis of Dawson, NE and Fanny Norstadt of Sidney, IA; brother, Leon Fleming of Sidney; numerous nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.
ARTHUR GARREANS, age 80 of Stover, MO, formerly of Nebraska City, NE, died Sunday, February 8, 2004 at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, IA following a brief illness. Arthur was born January 28, 1924 in Thurman, IA to Charles E. Garreans and Ressa (Wilbur) Garrreans. He was married July 24, 1982 to Lillie Gerhart in Kansas City, KS and worked for over 40 years with Burlington Northern Railroad as a Rail Worker. Arthur was a member of the Sidney Church of Christ and the Eagles Club in Nebraska City, NE.
Arthur was preceded in death by his parents and 3 sisters, Helen Simonson, Evelyn Miller and Ruth Rice. He is survived by 2 daughters, Debbie Moyer and Cathy Lopez and husband Guillermo all of Omaha, NE; son, David Garreans and wife Karen of Perry, IA; 3 step daughters, Linda Wright of Grandview, MO, Vicky Jones and husband Max of Kansas City, KS and Carolyn Longmount; 4 step sons, Nelson Eighmy and wife Connie of Springfield, MO, James Eighmy of Ocoee, FL, and Gary Williams and Bruce Williams both of Ada, OK; 7 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 7 step grandchildren, 12 step great grandchildren; brother, Paul Garreans of Plattsmouth, NE; numerous nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
JOANNE SHAW, age 71 of Tabor, IA, died Wednesday, February 4, 2004 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE following a brief illness. Joanne was born February 5, 1932 in Sidney, IA to John Tritsch and Marjorie (Elliot) Tritsch. She was married to Gene Shaw and was a member of the Bartlett, IA Community Church. Joanne worked for 54 years at the Randolph State Bank in many positions including Cashier.
Joanne was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gene Shaw; sister, Maureen Reeves; and an infant brother. She is survived by her daughter, Dolores Moles and husband Gary of Tabor; son, John Shaw and wife Stefanie of Tabor; grandson, Matthew Moles of Tabor; brother, Larry Tristch and wife Marcia; several nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
