ROBERT (BOBBY) NICCOLI, II, age 46 of Sidney, IA, died Wednesday, June 9, 2004 at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, NE following an extended battle with cancer. Bobby was born January 8, 1957 in Mitchell, SD to Robert J. Niccoli and Vada I. (Harris) Niccoli. He was married April 9, 1994 to Charlotte Hill in Nebraska City, NE. He worked for several years as a sales representative at Rowe Motor Company in Nebraska City and most recently at Laukemp Motors in Mound City, MO. Bobby volunteered at the Sidney Rodeo for many years and was a former member of the Eagles Club in Nebraska City.
Bobby was preceded in death by his father, Robert J. Niccoli. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Niccoli of Sidney, IA; daughter, Carly age 5 and son, Ryan age 7 both of Sidney; mother, Vada Niccoli of Nebraska City, NE; 2 sisters, Marcy French and husband Tom of Essex, IA and Angie Nenneman of Sidney; 2 nieces, Kelsey Nenneman of Sidney and Natalie French of Essex; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and many other relatives and friends.
LAWRENCE GRAY, of Phoenix, AZ, formerly of Sidney, IA died Saturday, June 5, 2004 at Friendship Village Care Center in Phoenix, AZ following an extended illness. Lawrence was born October 24, 1928 in Sidney, IA to Mr. and Mrs. John M. Gray. He graduated as valedictorian from Sidney High School. Lawrence attended college in Fairfield, IA and graduated from Law School in Iowa City. He married Hildegard (Wargge) in Gladbrook, IA and joined the Army, where he served in Italy for a few years before returning back to Iowa. Hilde and Lawrence moved to California where he worked as a manager in an insurance business and then moved to Phoenix, AZ to live in the Friendship Village.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Hilde; and 2 sisters, Helen Dunbar and Lucille Fieseler. He is survived by his sister Mary Ziegenbein of Beatrice, NE and niece Gretchen Oldchurch of San Antonio, TX, other relatives and friends.
JAMES A. ROSS, age 57 of Tabor, IA died unexpectedly on Friday, May 28, 2004 at his farm home south of Tabor. James was born July 24, 1946 in Hamburg, IA to Floyd Elmer Ross and Wilma Luella Ross. James grew up in Tabor and graduated from Tabor High School. He lived on the farm his entire life except for a short time when he was married to Beulah. He helped his father on the farm until his father’s death and then he was of great help and comfort to his mother until she passed on.
James loved to travel and made several fishing trips to Minnesota with his parents. He also made several trips out west to Colorado, California and Texas and always had much to tell about his adventures when he returned home. James loved family gatherings and was always pleased when he could be of any help. He cared much about the well being of his neighbors and friends and he in turn relied on them when the need arose.
James was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by 2 brothers, Norman Ross of Houston, TX, and Michael and wife of Aurora, CO; his aunt Elaine, cousins, other relatives and friends.
MALCOM DWIGHT MADISON, age 82 of Tabor, IA died on Friday, May 21, 2004 at Tabor Manor Care Center in Tabor, IA. Malcom was born March 19, 1922 in Malvern, IA to Brick Hall Madison and Mildred (Johnson) Madison. His family moved to Gordon, NE in 1925 and Parker, SD in 1934 and returned to Randolph, IA in 1938. In November 1939, he was married to Cordie Rickabaugh. To this union one son, Leroy, was born on November 28, 1946. Malcom entered the Army in January of 1943. He took his basic training (Quarter Master Division) in Cheyenne, WY and was transferred to Hawaii. He was injured and hospitalized in Okinawa, Japan. He returned to the Army Hospital in Clinton, IA and was discharged on November 19, 1945.
Dwight farmed and was also a mechanic for Nelson Bros. In Tabor, IA for 20 years. He drove trucks until he retired. Later he worked at the Ameristar Casino for 4 years until his health declined. Dwight was a Charter Life member of the DAV & VFW and a former member of the Tabor Volunteer Fire Department.
RETA WYMORE CRAIN, passed away Saturday, April 10, 2004 in Tigard, Washington County, Oregon at the age of 82 years. She was diagnosed with lung cancer in January 2004. Services and internment of ashes will be held at Sidney Cemetery in Sidney, Iowa at a later date. She was born March 28, 1922 in Rocky Ford, Otero County, Colorado, the youngest of eight children, to William Thomas and Margaret Berdella Sulser Wymore. While Reta was still an infant, the family moved from Colorado to Independence, Missouri, where she grew up. She graduated from High School in Sidney, Iowa in 1940, the only child in her family to do so. Soon after the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor that began American involvement in World War II, Reta left Iowa and moved to Waco, Texas. There she worked in a munitions plant, and after the war, moved to Amarillo, Texas. In Amarillo, Reta was employed as an executive secretary for the AT&T Telephone Company. While living in Amarillo, she met Paul William Crain. They were married in Amarillo on July 18, 1951. Their daughter Paula Margaret was born in Roswell, New Mexico in 1953. From Roswell, Reta and Paul relocated to El Paso, Texas, where their second child, Shayne Wymore, was born in 1957. Beginning in 1954 they owned and operated Crain Construction Company until their retirement in 1975, when they left El Paso. After living in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico for three years, Reta and Paul moved to Carlsbad, New Mexico, where Paul died in 1995. Reta was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority since 1947. While living in Carlsbad, she was also involved with the Hospital Auxiliary and the Women's Club. Reta moved to Midland, Texas in 1998, where she resided at Polo Park Retirement Center. In 1999, she moved to Tigard, Oregon. Reta Wymore Crain was preceded in death by her husband, Paul William Crain and by her parents William Thomas and Margaret Berdella Wymore. Five sisters and two brothers Bessie Lee Purdue, Edna Marie Corder, Edyth Welch, Jessie Jaine Perkins, George William Wymore, Finis Raymond Wymore, and Maxine Virginia Hill also preceded her in death. Reta is survived by her daughter and son-in law Paula and Gary Miller, of Midland, Texas and by her son and daughter-in-law Shayne and Gail Guftason of Tigard, Oregon. She is also survived by nephews Jerri Hill of Amarillo, Texas and Johnny Perkins of Unionville, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the Willamette Falls Hospice, 1505 Division St., Oregon City, OR 97045 or to the charity of one's choice. The Crawford-Marshall Funeral Chapel in Sidney, IA is in charge of intermenty services with the Youngs Funeral Home handling arrangements in Tigard, OR.
THORNTON (BUD) DUNSDON, age 85 of Lamoni, IA, formerly of Tabor, IA, died Sunday, May 2, 2004 at the Lamoni Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following an extended illness. Bud was born November 8, 1918 near Tabor, IA to Roy J. Dunsdon and Gladys L. (Jensen) Dunsdon. Bud was a 1936 graduate of Tabor High School and was married to Emily Easter on January 17, 1947 in Independence, MO. They lived and farmed near Tabor until moving from Tabor to Lamoni in 1998. Bud was a member of the Community of Christ Church in Council Bluffs, IA and served for a time in the U.S. Army.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents and 2 sisters, Elizabeth Ann Dunsdon and Louise Barber. He is survived by his wife, Emily of Lamoni, IA; 2 sons, John and wife Barb Dunsdon of Leon, IA and Ronald and wife DeAnn of Ft. Dodge, IA; 5 grandchildren, 1 great grandson; sister, Geraldine Larson of Phoenix, AZ; brother, Wendell Dunsdon of Council Bluffs, IA; several nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
MARGARET FUELLING, age 93 of Tabor, IA died on Sunday, May 9, 2004 at Tabor Manor Care Center in Tabor, IA following an extended illness. Margaret was born May 10, 1910 in Rockport, MO to Roy Clevland Kish and Mable (Griffith) Kish. On December 1, 1945 she was married to Myron H. Fuelling in Rockport, MO. Margaret graduated from Penn State University with a Bachelors degree in Home Economics. She taught Home Ec for the Sidney school district for many years. Margaret and Myron farmed near Rockport until 1950, when they moved to the farm near Tabor. She was a member of the Tabor First Congregational United Church of Christ and taught Sunday School for many years, and active in CIC and the church ladies group.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Myron; 2 sisters, Betty Ensfield and Marion Ensfield; and brother, Walter Kish. She is survived by her son, Melvin Fuelling and wife Peggy of Tabor, IA; 2 sisters, Ann Hersh of Red Cloud, NE and Kathleen Smotherman and husband Ed of Deland, FL; brother, Carl Kish and wife Sally of Roswell, GA; 2 step grandchildren, Chad Kemp of Omaha, NE and Heather Fichter and husband Kyle of Randolph, IA; 3 step great grandchildren, Hannah, Kendall, and Kynzie Fichter all of Randolph, IA; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
CARL SAMUEL SLIGAR was born the first of four children on March 20, 1916, at Sidney, Iowa to David and Ethel (Lord) Sligar. He grew up with his sister Alene and brothers James and Dave in various locations in Fremont County and southeastern South Dakota. On September 9, 1936, Carl married Nina Dyke in Rock Port, MO. To this marriage they had one daughter, Sandra Kay. Carl and Nina celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1986 and their 60th anniversary in 1996 among family and friends.
Carl farmed in Fremont County most of his life, working for, among others, Sam Wright, Wendel Miller, and Jack Stanley, from whom he retired in 1981 after 28 years of service. Carl and Nina spent their retirement years in Sidney until Nina’s death in 1998. During these years Carl became Sidney’s favorite “handyman”, who was called upon by many to mow their lawns or fix a broken window. He made many good friends during this busy time. Following Nina’s death, Carl continued to live in his home until October 2002 when he became a resident at the Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, where he died after a short illness on March 19, 2004, just one hour short of his 88th birthday.
Carl belonged to several fraternal organizations throughout his life, including the Masonic Lodge at Sidney, from where he received a 50 year member certificate; the Knights of Pythias at Sidney; and the Elks Lodge at Nebraska City.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Nina. He is survived by his daughter, Kay and son in law, Lew Bebout of McPaul, IA; grandson Kevin Bebout of Iowa City; sister, Alene Humbert of Shenandoah, IA; brother, James Sligar and his wife Julia of Shenandoah, IA; brother David Sligar and his wife Sandy of Hemingford, NE; aunt, Naomi Frakes of Nebraska City, NE; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.
ADA “MAXINE” CHANCE, age 87 of rural Sidney, died suddenly Friday, March 5, 2004 at Nancy’s home where she was visiting. Maxine was born May 14, 1916, in Hamburg, Iowa the daughter of Jacob and Mabel (Brainard) Strait. She attended Pomeroy School near her home until graduating from the eighth grade. She then moved to Hamburg to attend high school, living with Grandma and Grampa Strait.
After graduating from high school in May of 1933 at the age of sixteen, she stayed on the farm for two years, helping her beloved dad with farm work during some of the worst of the Great Depression. Maxine entered the Nurses Training Program at the Hamburg Hospital on March 5, 1935. On July 29, 1937, she married Jesse W. Chance in Sidney. She worked as a nurse for fifty years, retiring on March 5, 1985 for the hospital which in later years became Grape Community Hospital. In addition to her nursing career, she raised her family and assisted her husband with their farm near Sidney, which she still lived independently until her recent illness.
Maxine was a member of the Sidney United Methodist Church, the Garden Club, and the rural Neighborhood Club. She loved her profession of nursing, it only seems fitting that she would die on the same day she started her career, and retired from the career that she loved. She enjoyed the outdoors, watching birds from her kitchen window, tending her garden, and working in the yard. But most important in her life was her family, throughout the years she always put them first.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Jesse; sisters, Marjorie Buckner, Mazie Zimmerman, and Doris Williamson; and one brother, Fred “Bud” Strait. She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Betty and Dr. Carroll Trewet of Atlantic, Iowa and Nancy and Mark Kedzior of Iowa City; 7 grandchildren, J. Mitchell and his wife, Tami Trewet, Lauri and her husband, Rick Vance, Matthew Trewet, Michael and his wife, Lisa Trewet, Mark and his wife, Jodi Trewet, Kristi and her husband, Bernie Sams, and Jessica Kedzior; 11 great-grandchildren, Chance and Caroline Trewet, Jake and Drew Vance, Carter Trewet, Timmy and Jesse Trewet, Tyler And Emmie Trewet, Audrey Sams and Bernie Sams III; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
RUTH E. DALTON, age 95 of Council Bluffs, IA died on Monday, February 23, 2004 at Risen Son Village in Council Bluffs, IA following an extended illness. Ruth was born May 20, 1908 in Tabor, IA to Joe Dalton and Allice (Hallam) Dalton. She was a teacher and administrator in public schools of Iowa and Colorado for over 43 years. Ruth retired from Aurora Public Schools in Aurora, CO and an elementary school was named for her. She was a member of the First Methodist Church of Omaha, NE and a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; brother Brice; 2 sisters, Blanch and Ethel; and 1 niece. She is survived by 2 great nephews, other relatives and friends.
