CAROLYN LOUISE ALEXANDER
Carolyn Louise Walker was born August 15, 1935 near Kellerton, Iowa, the third-born to Anna Bernice Baldon and Lyman Gardner Walker.
Her early education was obtained at Monroe Center, a rural school near the farm where she was born. She graduated from Kellerton high school in 1953 and went on to attend and graduate from Iowa State College with a degree in home economics education.
On April 14, 1957 she was married to Charles F. Alexander at the Kellerton Methodist Church. Charles was in the Army and they moved to the Chicago area. Carolyn taught at the Palatine high school and helped start a Baptist mission church in Palatine, Illinois. They moved to Ontario, Canada in 1963 and Carolyn taught home economics in four different high schools in Toronto. She was also active in setting up cooperative education and child development courses.
Carolyn and Charles (Joe) retired in 1995 after she had worked as an educator for 25 years. She enjoyed traveling to different countries and locations. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed the role of grandma.
Carolyn passed away June 29, 1999 at North York General Hospital, Toronto, Canada, after a short illness of liver cancer.
Survivors include her husband Charles F. (Joe) Alexander of Stouffville, Ontario, Canada/South Padre Island, Texas; sons, Todd (Cindy) and daughter Courtney of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and David and family Christina and Steven of Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada; stepmother-in-law, Roseanne Caper of Sun City Center, Florida; brothers, Robert L. (Loy) Walker of Marengo, Iowa, Lyman J. (Ann) Walker of Searcy, Arkansas, and Barry B. Walker of Des Moines, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lyman and Anna Walker; an infant brother in 1931; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law.
A private cremation service was held. Interment will be October 31, 1999 at 1:00 p.m. in the Maple Row Cemetery, Kellerton.

ENID CHATFIELD
Enid was born January 21, 1913 to Corydon Minor Anderson and Lora Edna Sharp in Promise City, Iowa and departed this life on October 15, 1999 at Glendale Memorial Hospital in Glendale, California.
Enid graduated from high school in Promise City. On April 18, 1929 she was united in marriage to Harold Chatfield. They had two children, a daughter Janene Capp and son Jerry Chatfield. They lived in various towns in Iowa where Harold was an industrial arts teacher and boys' basketball coach. In 1942 they moved to Cleveland, Ohio and lived there until 1955 when they moved to La Mirada, California.
Enid was a member of the Methodist church and various organizations during her many years. Enid's main concern in life was the care and love of her family. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. Enid's mother died in 1933 and for many years her sister Colleen was a member of her family.
She lived her remaining years in Panorama City, California. In May, 1999 she was very ill and spent the remainder of her life in a nursing home and in hospitals.
She was preceded in death by her husband Harold; daughter Janene Capp; son Jerry Chatfield; brothers, Ellis and Clare Anderson; sisters Karolyn Bevington, Fra Roe and infant sister Naomi.
Survivors include grandchildren, David, Dean, Doug, Linda and Laurie Chatfield and Colleen Capp; daughter-in-law Jean Chatfield; sister Colleen Knight; nieces, Colleen Widergren, Judy Dredge, Martha Pine, Cathy Shoesmith, Carri Duckworth, Debra Robertson; and nephews,Thomas and Michael Anderson.
Her body has been donated to the UCLA hospital.
JOHNATHON TAYLOR "J.T." FLOWERS
J. T. (Flowers) Chumbley passed away at 7:09 p.m., Friday, October 22, 1999 in his mother's arms at the Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa at age three.
He was born May 18, 1996. He has three brothers, Brian, age seven, Donnavon, age five and Quintin, age two; and one sister, Mandy, age three months.
He is sadly missed by everyone, Mom, Dad, brothers, sisters, aunts, cousins, uncles, grandparents and friends.
He loved to play with the black kitten he got from his aunt Ang. He loved to help with the demo car and take rides with his dad. He also loved to help take care of his sister. He loved to sing, dance, play ball, go swimming, go skating, play with his brothers and cousins, go to Grandpa's house and stay the night. His favorite movie was "Cry Baby."
J. T. was in Head Start. His teachers were Jeannette Todd, Jodi Angus, and Kathy Hall. He is sadly missed by everyone.
His name means: (Hebrew) given by God; Taylor: (old French-Latin) a tailor.
Services were held at Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home of Mount Ayr, Iowa on Monday, October 25, 1999 with Reverend Len Green officiating. Musicial selections were "Livin' La Vida Loca," "Go Rest High On That Mountain," "Daddy's Little Man," Daddy's Hands," and "Steal Away." Casketbearers were Jeremy Huntsman, Tommy Moad, Loren Baker and Al Flowers.
Interment was in the Kirk Cemetery, Allendale, Missouri.
NICHOLAS CALVIN NEEDLES
Nicholas Calvin Needles, 46, died Thursday, October 21, 1999 at the Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa from complications of diabetes and muscular dystrophy.
Mr. Needles was born in Des Moines. He grew up and spent most of his life in Indianola, Iowa before moving to Des Moines a year ago. He worked as the assistant manager at Git-N-Go.
Survivors include daughter Anna Needles of Tingley, Iowa; son Jonathan Needles of Altoona, Iowa; and sister Natalie Lewellin of Des Moines.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, October 28, 1999 at 10:00 a.m., at Wesley Parlor in the First United Methodist Church in Indianola.
Mr. Needles has donated his body to Des Moines University Osteopathic Medical Center. Memorials may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

VIOLA VIVIAN POLLOCK
Viola Vivian Pollock was born June 18, 1913 to Frank and Ida Closson Hamilton in Cedaredge, Colorado. She passed away October 17, 1999 in Mount Ayr, Iowa.
Vivian attended and graduated from the Cedaredge school.
Vivian was united in marriage to Lynn R. Pollock December 24, 1932 in Cedaredge, Colorado. To this union six children were born.
In 1951 the family moved to Ringgold County, Iowa where Vivian has lived since.
Vivian was a member of Wishard Chapel United Methodist Church where she attended faithfully. After her husband's death, Vivian took nurses aid training and stayed with several senior citizens so they could stay in their own homes. The last several years she made her home with James and Patty Pollock and spent time with other family members.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant daughter and brother Ray Hamilton of Hotchkiss, Colorado.
Left to cherish her memory are four sons, James and wife Patty of Mount Ayr, John and wife Catherine of Malvern, Iowa, Frank and wife Judy of Mount Ayr and Tom and wife Helen of Malvern; a daughter Erma and husband Charles Scearcy of Ollie, Iowa; a sister Melva Jones of Eckert, Colorado; a brother-in-law Avery Pollock and wife Wanda of Austin, Colorado; sisters-in-law, Edith Leonard of Delta, Colorado and Mildred Hamilton of Hotchkiss, Colorado; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and a host of other family and friends.
Services were at the Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr on Wednesday, October 20, 1999 with Reverend Jeff Flagg officiating. Connie Jones was the reader and Nancy Sackett, Carol McCreary and Barbara Belzer provided music.
Casketbearers were Bill Pollock, Dan Pollock, Jeff Pollock, Don Pollock, Bob Scearcy and Tony Kelley. Honorary pallbearers were Scott Pollock, Chase Horstmeyer, Doyle Richards, David Weeda and David Jones.
Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr.
ELLEN MARIE SMITH
Ellen Marie Smith, daughter of Henry T. and Edith (Clymer) Smith, was born in Jefferson Township, Ringgold County, Iowa, November 3, 1926 and departed this life October 19, 1999 at Alegent Mercy Hospital in Corning, Iowa at the age of 72 years, 11 months and 16 days.
Ellen lived in Ringgold County until the age of nine when she entered Glenwood State school with her sister. In 1961, Ellen and her sister moved to the Jasper County Care Facility and resided there until 1981, when Ellen and her sister moved to the Taylor County Care Facility, now Taylor Ridge Estates.
Ellen was preceded in death by both of her parents; sisters, Josephine, Betty Jane, Lena, Bessie, Florence and Pearl; and a brother Jessie.
Left to cherish her memory are her sister Julia Smith of Taylor Ridge Estates; nieces, nephews; and a special brother-in-law Fern Barker of Conway, Iowa.
Ellen was very active in her residential community. Ellen particularly enjoyed vacationing, doing needle work and playing in the Taylor Ridge Bell Choir. Ellie, as she was known by her friends, loved being a help to all around her. Ellie was a favorite of the young children and young adults who visited Taylor Ridge and even volunteered her time at a local day care.
Ellie and her sister, Julia, had a very special relationship. Ellie was especially close with her nieces Patty and Denise and her great niece Melissa, who was always there for her.
Ellen was a loving, kind and considerate person who will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Services were at the Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa on Thursday, October 21, 1999 with friends from Taylor Ridge officiating.
Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr.
HOWARD V. WEEDA
Howard V. Weeda, age 90, of Manhattan, Kansas died October 22, 1999, at his residence following an extended illness.
He was born November 21, 1908 in Tingley, Iowa, the son of G. B. and Mabel (Richards) Weeda. He was raised in Tingley.
In 1935 he was married to Opal A. Oxenreider in Grant City, Missouri and began to farm northeast of Tingley. They moved to Clearfield, Iowa in 1951 and he worked as a skilled carpenter. He then began his career as a meat cutter for Hy-Vee Food Stores and transferred to Cainsville, Missouri in 1960. In 1961 he was promoted to manager and continued in that position until his retirement in 1973.
Mr. and Mrs. Weeda moved to Manhattan, Kansas in 1978.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #97 A.F. & A.M. in Bethany, Missouri, Order of Eastern Star Eagle Light Chapter #449 in Eagleville, Missouri, Blue Valley Memorial United Methodist Church in Manhattan, Kansas, had served on the school board in Clearfield, Iowa and Cainsville, Missouri, and had also served as the mayor of Cainsville.
Survivors include his wife Mrs. Opal Weeda of the home; two daughters, Donna McIntosh and her husband Duane of Tacoma, Washington, and Shirley Posler and her husband Gerry of Manhattan, Kansas; one sister Lucy Garland of Des Moines, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Nancy Ashton, Rick, Mike and Randy Busby, Mark, Steve and Brian Posler; nine great-grandchildren, Holly, Jackie, Rikki, Marissa and Brendan Busby, Tiana, Spencer, Timothy and Emma Posler; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Clarence, Ernest, Paul and Neal Weeda; and one sister Gladys Eggleston.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 26, 1999 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel, Manhattan, Kansas with Reverends Dr. E. Carolyn Wills and Mark Waterhouse officiating.
Graveside services were held on Wednesday, October 27 at the Tingley Cemetery, Tingley, handled by the Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa with Reverend Michael Druhl officiating. Casketbearers were Nancy Ashton, Mark, Steven and Brian Posler.
Memorial contributions may be made to Homecare & Hospice, Inc. or Blue Valley Memorial United Methodist Church.
MARY MARGUERITE DRAKE
Mary Ferber Drake was born July 13, 1903 to John and Hennrietta Case Ferber in Mount Ayr, Iowa. She passed away September 29, 1999 at the Mount Ayr Health Care Center at the age of 96 years.
Mary attended school in Mount Ayr. After high school she taught three years in rural schools. She went back to teaching after raising her family. While teaching she completed her college degree graduating from Drake University in 1965. Mary taught a total of 32 years.
Mary was united in marriage to Warren Drake on April 10, 1925 and to this union were born four boys and one girl.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Hennrietta Ferber; her husband Warren on March 31, 1985; son Linden on May 14, 1996; grandson Rodney Drake; brother Floyd Ferber; and a sister Ruth Sheil.
Mary is survived by Donella Drake, Paul and wife Mildred Drake and Merl and wife Thelma Drake of Mount Ayr, Lyle Drake of Pineville, Oregon and Mildred Johnston and husband Herb of Des Moines; 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law Floy Drake of Mount Ayr; one sister-in-law Opal Ferber of Osceola; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Services were held at the Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home of Mount Ayr on Friday, October 1, 1999 with Reverend Michael Druhl officiating. Nancy Sackett, Margaret Bickers and Mary Webb provided music. Casketbearers were Deric Drake, Randy Drake, Scott Drake, Jerold Adams, Galen Swanson and Eric Johnston.
Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr.
BRIAN LAWRENCE
Funeral services for Brian Lawrence, age 36, of Blockton, Iowa, were held Thursday, September 16, 1999 at the Blockton Chrisitan Church with Pastor Scott Marcum officiating.
Interment was held in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton.
Memorials can be given in his name. Services were conducted by the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford.
Brian Dean Lawrence, son of James Dean Lawrence and Sharon Kay (Johnson) Groff was born August 6, 1963 at Ringgold County Hospital, Mount Ayr, Iowa. He departed this life on September 12, 1999 at St. Joseph's Hospital, Omaha, NE due to massive injuries suffered in a car accident on August 26, 1999.
He spent his entire life living in Blockton attending Blockton public school and graduating from Bedford high school in 1981. He attended Southwestern Community College, receiving a degree in auto body in 1982.
On February 9, 1985, he was united in marriage to Vonn Lorine Lock at Blockton. Three children were born to this union to bless their home and share their love, James Lee, Lacee Lorine and Joel Patrick.
Brian lost his dad at the young age of six years due to a car accident. He and his mother Sharon were blessed to join the life and family of Ivan Groff in 1972, giving Brian a dad and sisters he didn't have.
Brian, affectionately known as "Harv," by many friends and family was an outgoing person, making friends wherever he was and lending a helping hand. Brian had a personality only those of us who knew and loved him could appreciate.
Brian had found his calling in life as a correctional officer at the Correctional Facility in Clarinda, Iowa. He had a special way with the inmates, receiving a respect not easily attained.
He was known across the Midwest for his talent of raising, breeding and training mules. He and his family enjoyed camping and attending trail rides and various mule shows.
Brian usually was found each morning at the lots, breaking, riding and training mules, or on his tractor. It was an unusual day not to see him riding down the road on a mule usually accompanied by one of his children.
Brian had a strong will to live and gave all he had to survive but it was not meant to be.
Brian was preceded in death by his father, James Lawrence, in 1969.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Vonn; three children, Jimmy, Lacee and Joel, of the home; parents, Ivan and Sharon Groff of Blockton; sisters, Elouise Longfellow and husband Alan of Blockton and Sharon Mason and husband Mike of Houston, TX; brother-in-law, Harold Dye of Harlan, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Ronda Mothershead and husband Tom of Bedford and Robin Kernen of Bedford; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Brian shared a special closeness with aunts, uncles and cousins.
He will always be a precious memory to his family. We will always cherish the love he gave each one of us in his own special way.
RAY WILBER MERCER
Ray Wilber Mercer was born on Friday, February 19, 1926 at the family farm in Taylor County, Iowa. He was the son of Ervin B. and Lola Judy Rusco Mercer. Ray died peacefully at his home east of Bedford, Iowa.
Ray was united in marriage to Phyllis June Minnick on April 27, 1946 at Grant City, Missouri and to this union one son, Elvin, was born.
Ray was a farmer and he worked for several years at the Bedford Sale Barn and for Dr. Jim Lucas.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Phyllis on January 18, 1996 and their son Elvin; infant brothers, Ralph and Raymond; and sisters, Catherine Davis and Goldie Jackson.
He is survived by his brothers, RC Mercer and wife Virginia of Olympia, Washington, Rexel Mercer of Albion, Iowa, Junior Mercer and wife Ailene and Eugene Mercer and wife Joyce, all of Gladbrook, Iowa, Marvin Mercer of Medford, Oregon and Howard H. Mercer and wife Annette of Cowan, Tennessee as well as many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Graveside services were at the Athelstan Cemetery, Athelstan, Iowa on Saturday, October 2, 1999 at 1:30 p.m. with Reverend Alan Rusk officiating.
Interment was in the Athelstan Cemetery, Athelstan.
Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home of Clearfield, Iowa was in charge of the arrangements.
OPAL MAUDE MOTSINGER
Opal Maude Motsinger was born on October 25, 1916 at Redding, Iowa and passed away at the Creston Nursing and Rehab Center in Creston, Iowa on Friday, October 1, 1999 at the age of 82.
She was the daughter of Carl and Maude Armstrong Olney of Redding and graduated from Redding High School.
Opal was united in marriage with Carroll Motsinger on December 22, 1935 in Afton, Iowa.
Opal lived in the Maloy area before moving to Creston in 1958. She was a homemaker and worked as a cook for Creston Nursing & Rehab and the Williams Cafe in Creston.
Preceeding her in death were her parents; her husband Carroll in 1990; two children Orval and Marcia; two brothers, Robert and Clifford; and one sister Avis Maudlin.
Those left to cherish her memory are a son, Wade and wife Lavonne Motsinger of Waukee; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; a brother Eugene Olney of Redding; and two sisters Vera Combs of Redding and Mary Parker of Des Moines.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, October 5 at the Powers Funeral Home in Creston with Rev. Barbara Zimmerman, Pastor of St. John's United Church of Christ officiating.
Memorials may be sent to the Creston Nursing and Rehab Center.
CHARLIE WESLEY BROTT
Charlie Wesley Brott was born January 29, 1933 in Redding, Iowa to Grant Bernard and Alma Lea Brott. He graduated from Clearfield high school in 1952. He then served in the Army for two years from 1953 to 1955.
He was united in marriage to Charlene Marie Linkvis on June 8, 1952 at the Clearfield Methodist Church. The couple was privileged to share 47 years together. This marriage was blessed with five children.
Charlie and Charlene farmed in the Clearfield area for approximately 45 years. Charlie was a member of the Clearfield United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, Creston Elks and the American Legion.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Charlene of Clearfield; daughter Janice, her husband Curt Purdum and their daughters, Staci, Ashley and Kayla of Ankeny, Iowa; daughter Bobbi, her husband Randy Barker and their three children, Clint, Jon and Megan of Blue Springs, Missouri; son Jeff and his three daughters, Trudy, Roxann and Elizabeth; and daughter Luann, her husband Kent Growe of Kansas City, Missouri.
His infant son Charles Junior, parents. Grant and Alma Brott, and father-in-law Cecil Bailey preceded him in death.
Charlie also leaves to mourn his brother and wife Lowell and Vaunciel of Clearfield; sister and husband Betty and Leonard Zigler of Brooklyn, Iowa; brothers-in-law and wives, Gene and Marlene Linkvis of Sioux City, Iowa, Bob and Nelda Linkvis of Kingman, Arizona and Joe and Bonnie Bailey of Omaha, Nebraska; sisters-in-law and husbands, Don and Evelyn Dowell of Waukee, Iowa and Joe and Bernadine Sobotka of Diagonal, Iowa; his mother-in-law Opal Bailey; and a host of nieces, nephews and many friends.
Everyone has a special memory of Charlie. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandpa and friend. He always had a smile or story to tell. His many interests included the acres of flower gardens at his home, the country crafts that grace many of their family's and friend's homes, his days spent farming or the morning coffee at the Clearfield Cafe.
Services were at the United Methodist Church in Clearfield on Monday, October 18, 1999 with Reverend Alan Rusk officiating. Marlene Larsen and Kathy Nelson provided music. Honorary pallbearers were LeRoy Beggs, Carroll Baker, Willis Wurster, Boyd Larsen, Raymond Straight, Richard Trucks, Jerry Brown, Dave Anctil and Kenneth Stephens.
Interment was in the Clearfield Cemetery, Clearfield.
Masonic rites were conducted by Noble Lodge, #458 A.F. & A.M. Military graveside rites were given by Woodside Post #97 American Legion.
DONNA MAE GLENDENNING
Donna Mae Glendenning was born July 23, 1930 in Fairfield, Nebraska to Everett and Savilla Lindemann Krell and passed away October 7, 1999 at the Clearview Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa, at the age of 69 years, three months and 14 days.
She attended public school in Hastings and Fairfield, Nebraska and later attended Southwestern Community College in Creston, Iowa.
In November of 1947 she married Robert Swartwood in Hastings, Nebraska. They moved to a farm in Ringgold County, Iowa in 1949. To this union three children were born Bob, Debbie, and Guyla Jean. Robert passed away December 1, 1970.
On August 17, 1975 Donna married Max Glendenning from Mount Ayr, Iowa. They lived on a farm south of Mount Ayr all their married life. Max's daughter, Jan, came to live with them in 1976.
Donna enjoyed her grandchildren, playing cribbage, going to bingo, and camping at the Iowa State Fair. Donna never knew a stranger.
She was preceded in death by her father, Everett Krell; daughter Guyla Jean Dymond, grandson Beau Sage; and husband Robert.
Donna is survived by her husband Max; mother and stepfather Savilla and Claire Nelsrud of Grand Forks, North Dakota; mother-in-law Lola Glendenning of Mount Ayr; son Bob and wife Jeani Swartwood of Clearfield, Iowa, grandsons, Brett Swartwood of San Antonio, Texas, and Brian Swartwood of Des Moines, and great-granddaughter Kaysha Swartwood; daughter Debbie Sage and husband Eric, and grandsons Willie and Ryan all of Altoona, Iowa; son-in-law Steve Dymond, grandson Rowdy Dymond of Adel, Iowa and granddaughter Danielle Dymond of Woodbine, Iowa; stepdaughter Jan Campbell, husband Kevin, grandchildren, Calob, Lucas, Jordan, Casey and Cacia of Mount Ayr; stepchildren, Jeri, Jackie, Jamie, Jody, Joey and Jason. Also Vic, Mary, and Caleb Nelsrud of Grand Forks, North Dakota; sister Peggy Parks and brother Norman Krell, wife Wanda all of Sun City, Arizona; brother-in-law Lloyd and wife LaVerne Glendenning of Mount Ayr; and many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Services were at the Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr on Monday, October 11, 1999 with Reverend Peter Brantner officiating.
Kathy Nelson was the vocalist and casketbearers were J. P. Whittington, Marvin Lesan, Jay Meester, Bob Haley, Jim Overholser and Rodger Cannon. Honorary pallbearers were Brett Swartwood, Brian Swartwood, Willie Sage, Ryan Sage, Danielle Dymond, Rowdy Dymond, Calob Still, Lucas Still and Jordan Still.
Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr.
LINNABELL VIRGINIA TRIDLE
On February 4, 191 0 Linnabell Virginia was born to John H. and Elsie Oshel on a farm near Orient, Iowa in Adair county. She was the eldest of 11 children. At a young age she moved with her parents to a farm three miles north of Diagonal, Iowa. She attended schools in Adair county and the Willow Grove school north of Diagonal.
In 1929 as a young woman she moved to Maxwell, Nebraska where she met her future husband William Tridle. They were married on February 15, 1933 in Grant City, Missouri while on a visit to her parents. They returned to Maxwell, Nebraska where Linnabell cooked on a ranch and at a restaurant. Their son William Jr. was born on January 16, 1939 in North Platte, Nebraska. In 1941 they purchased a farm near Benton, Iowa where they farmed for the next 40 years. They had four daughters, Virginia, Carolyn, Ruth and Betty.
Linnabell and Bill celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1983. In May of 1987 Bill passed away. Linnabell remained on the farm till January, 1996 when she moved to the Clearview Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa.
She is survived by her son William Jr. and (wife Maxine) of Orient; daughters ,Virginia Carson (husband Jack) of Diagonal, Carolyn Tridle of Gladstone, Missouri, and Betty Kohrt (husband Kalin) of Spokane, Washington; 16 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Fern Miller of Creston, Dorothy Ingraham of Webster City, Alice Shannon of Boone, Joyce Abbott of Creston and Norma Butcher of Des Moines; and one brother Clyde Oshel of Murray.
Linnabell was preceeded in death by her father John, mother Elsie, her brothers Roy, Ralph, Vern and John, her daughter Ruth, daughter-in-law Daisy and grandson-in-law Ronny Garner.
Linnabell was a long time member of the Rebecca Lodge, H.A.T. Club, volunteered for many years for the Cancer Society, and was a member of the Diagonal Christian Church and their Thursday Quilting Club.
Linnabell was a helpmate on the farm. She always had a large garden and was an excellent cook. Everyone loved her pies, cakes, breads and especially her homemade noodles. Whenever anyone visited there was always a cup of coffee and one of her wonderful breads or desserts. When her daughters Betty and Ruth came for a visit there was always their favorite raspberry pie.
Linnabell loved her cats. You could find her each morning and evening calling her kitties to come and eat.
She was always happy when a stray showed up at her door.
Services were at the Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr on Tuesday, October 12, 1999 with Reverend Eydie Stephens officiating. Judy Newton and Sue Tridle provided music.
Casketbearers were Duane Pine, Kevin Kilgore, Wallace Sobotka, Richard Motsinger, Bill Andrews and Bob Andrews. Honorary pallbearers were Billy Tridle, Paul Kilgore, Terry Pine, Scott Tridle, Sean Kilgore, Darin Goins and Tye Doudy.
Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Nevinville, Iowa.
NELLIE VIOLA FUGATE
Nellie Viola Fugate, daughter of Frank and Emma Arnold, was born at home on her parents' farm near Ellston, Iowa on March 7, 1909. She departed this life on October 27, 1999 at the Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr, Iowa.
Nellie attended Pumptown country school. Her mother took her to school many times in a one horse sleigh. She graduated from the Ellston high school in 1927.
On February 20, 1929 she married Ora Fugate in Creston, Iowa. They lived in Ellston one year, then in 1930 they moved to Kellerton, Iowa where she and Ora spent their married life. Ora was owner of the Kellerton Oil Co. Nellie was a devoted wife, mother, homemaker and owned and operated the Kellerton Laundromat for 17 years.
She enjoyed cooking and baking. Many delicious meals were enjoyed in her home.
Nellie was baptized in the Kellerton Christian Church on February 21, 1943.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband Ora in 1989; son Arnold Dean in 1999; two brothers, Roy and Orville; and a sister Arlene Toney.
She is survived by her daughter Judy Kaestner and husband Larry; daughter-in-law Rose Fugate; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Services were held at the Christian Church in Kellerton on Saturday, October 30, 1999 with Reverend Terry Roberts officiating. Music was provided by Marie Murphy and Reverend Terry Roberts. Casketbearers were Steven Kaestner, Mark Kaestner, Michael Fugate, Rob Fugate, Sam Merrill, Chester Munyon and Robert Lewis.
Interment was in the Maple Row Cemetery, Kellerton.

NORMA JEAN LUMBARD
On July 23, 1929, Norma Jean Lumbard was born to Edward and Beulah (Roudybush) Sobotka.
She grew up in the Diagonal, Iowa area with her four brothers, Donald, Leonard, David and Loren Ivan (Butch) and graduated from Diagonal high school in 1949.
On August 16, 1949 Norma Jean was united in marriage to Louis Roy Lumbard at the Christian Church in Diagonal, and to this union came the blessings of six children; Roseann, Mary Beth, Spencer, Brenda, Hope and Dawn.
Jeannie worked at the Diagonal school as a cook and as a dietary aid at the Union Printers Home in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
She enjoyed baking, crocheting, embroidery, quilting and canning.
Jeannie was a member of the Gravel Go Getters and the Friendly Neighborhood Club. She was a faithful member of the Christian Church in Colorado Springs for eight, years before transferring membership back to Diagonal where she continued to be an active and faithful member of The United Church of Diagonal.
Norma Jean is preceded in death by her father Edward; her birth mother Beulah; brother Leonard; son-in-law Roy J. Crumley; sister-in-law Mildred Sobotka; and great-granddaughter Noelle Taniser.
She is survived in death by her mother Frances Sobotka; husband Roy; her children, Roseann Crumley, Mary Beth (Ernie) Hower, Spencer (Ellie) Lumbard, Brenda (Scott) Hoffman, Hope (Willie) Hall and Dawn (Pete) LaCasse; also 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Jean was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Services were held at the United Church of Diagonal on Tuesday, November 2, 1999 with Reverend Pam Farren officiating. Musicians were Mrs. Claire Newton and Mrs. Rick Wiley. Casketbearers were Bruce Hower, Greg Hower, Rudy Taniser, Louis Lumbard, Isaac Lumbard and Eleazar Hoffman. Honorary pallbearers were Tony Crumley, Eric Hall, Donald Sobotka, Ivan Sobotka and David Sobotka.
Interment was in the Graceland Cemetery, Creston, Iowa.

LILA M. MANNING
Lila Manning, age 91, of Des Moines, Iowa, died of heart failure on November 2, 1999, at Fleur Heights Care Center, Des Moines.
Lila was born in Linn Grove, Iowa. She had lived in the Des Moines area since 1961. She was a school teacher at Stillwell junior high in West Des Moines, Iowa for 13 years and taught a total of 31 years, retiring in 1975.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church, West Des Moines Women's Club, West Des Moines Lioness Club (past president), Chapter GG of TTT and Delta Kappa Gamma.
Survivors include son Larry Manning of Grinnell, Iowa; daughter Phyllis Gillaspie of Sun City, California; sister Floy Elkins of Mission, Texas; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at the Westover Funeral Home, Des Moines at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, November 4, 1999. Cremation will follow services.
A private family burial will take place on Monday, November 8, 1999 at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Mount Ayr, Iowa.

ELMER LEO RAINS
Elmer Leo Rains, age 81, formerly of Iowa City, Iowa, died Saturday, October 30, 1999, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa following a lengthy illness.
Elmer was born July 21, 1918 in New Castle, Nebraska the son of Marion and Nellie (Russell) Rains. Elmer married Lela Lewis on December 23, 1950 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He farmed and was a truck driver throughout his lifetime. Elmer joined the United States Air Force and served in WWII.
Elmer lived in Iowa City until 1980 when he moved to Washington. He then moved to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown in 1994. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #320. He was also a member of the International Association of Laryngectomy and was very active in Iowa City helping people who had received a laryngectomy.
Elmer is survived by a son David Rains and his wife Karen of Sigourney, Iowa; three sisters, Marian Wick of Osceola, Iowa, Norma Grady of Creston, Iowa and Verna Huff of Mount Ayr, Iowa; a brother Clark Rains of Texas; two granddaughters, Melissa and Miranda; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Lela in 1990, sister Margaret and a brother Carter.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, November 2, 1999 at Memory Gardens Cemetery with Reverend James Kledis officiating.
Military rites were conducted by the Coralville American Legion Post #721 assisted by other local military organizations.
Memorials may be given to Elmer Leo Rains Memorial Fund.
