Donald "Ding" Bell
Word has been received of the death of Donald "Ding" Bell, 93, who died in Sun City, Az. on June 21, 2001. He was a former resident of Clear Lake and Mason City. Services will be held at a later date in Mason City.
Donald Bell was born on April 1, 1908 in Clear Lake, the son of Harry and Bertha (Pride) Bell. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1925 and attended Mason City Junior College and Hamilton Business College. He worked as a salesman for northern States Portland Cement Co., before and after serving in World War II. He was elected commander of Stafford Post 222, American Legion in Clear Lake.
In 1961 he was united in marriage to Marian Krunbholz Douglass. They retired to Arizona in 1971.
He is survived by one sister, Hallie Mack, Clear Lake; two step-daughters, Vicki Douglass, Sun City, and Patricia Douglass, Chicago, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marian; his parents; two sisters, Merna Deputy and Carol Josten; and a nephew, Richard Mack.
Curtis R. Pitkin
Services for Curtis R. Pitkin, 71, of Andrews, Texas were Thursday, June 14 at Calvary Baptist Church in Andrews with the Rev. Bob Zap officiating.
Burial was in the Andrews Old Cemetery. The McNett Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Curtis died Monday, June 11, 2001 at Midland Memorial Hospital. He was born June 3, 1930 in Clear Lake, Iowa.
He married
LuElla Rosendahl on Sept. 16, 1959 in Garner, Iowa. They moved to Andrews in 1957 from Iowa and he worked as a master mechanic for Northern Natural Gas, which is now Enron Gas.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Norvell, Virgil and Franklin; and one sister, Goldie Bitker.
Survivors include his wife, LuElla; three sons, Mike Pitkin and Greg Pitkin, both of Andrews, and Alan Pitkin of Midland, Texas; two daughters, Nancy Hotchkin of Odessa, Texas, and Joan Thompson of Andrews; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
Charles Kimble, 87, passed away Friday, June 29, 2001 at his residence. Services were held Monday, July 2 at the Clear Lake Cemetery.
Mr. Kimble was born March 8, 1914 in Bloomfield, Iowa to Glen A. Kimble and Elizabeth Simmons Kimble. He moved to Texas from Pauline, Iowa. He was a gas plant operator for Northern Natural Gas.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera; his parents; and a daughter, Joyce Kimble.
Survivors include three sons, Dallas Kimble of Ft. Stockton, Texas, Steven Kimble of Bullard, Texas, and Monte Kimble of Pflugerville, Texas; two daughters, Carolyn Williams of Memphis, Tenn., and Mary Jo Webb of Oxford, Ala.; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Berta E. Underkofler
Berta E. Underkofler 88, formerly of Clear Lake, died July 1, 2001, at Milwaukee, Wis. Funeral Services were held Saturday, July 7, 2001, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, Iowa, with the Rev. Jana Swenson officiating. Interment was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa. Family suggests memorials to National Parkinson's Foundation, 1501 Northwest 9th Ave., Miami, FL 33136 or American Heart Association.
Berta was born Nov. 15, 1912 in Crailsheim, Germany, the daughter of Johann and Louise Schaffer. There were nine children in the family, six boys and three girls. Her brother, Bill Burkhardt, moved to the United States for greater opportunities, eventually settling in Clear Lake. He owned and operated the Clear Lake Bakery until his death in 1980.
When Berta was 17 she journeyed to the U.S. on a visit to her brother Bill in Clear Lake as an adventure for one year. While working in the bakery retail store and learning English, she met Galen Underkofler. Loved bloomed, and not so many weeks later they were married
in Grandma Underkofler's living room on Jan. 31, 1931.
They resided in Clear Lake until after WW II, and in 1948 they moved to Cleveland, Ohio and then to Milwaukee, Wis. in 1965. They left behind their house in Cleveland, and adapted to a new lifestyle living in a beautiful high-rise condo on the shores of Lake Michigan, never tiring of the beautiful changing vistas they had of Lake Michigan and the city. Lifelong interests centered on her family, her home and her church.
Berta is survived by two children, Victoria L. O'Brien, Milwaukee, Wis., and Rudy J. Underkofler and his wife, Carole, Glendale, Wis.; seven grandchildren, Erin E., Heather A.S., Galen W., Gale Lynn, Gretchen L., Colleen and Tina; five great- grandchildren and one sister, Emmi Thurnhuber of Germany; and in- laws Guida and Julius Gradisher and Willys Underkofler. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Galen Y.; son, Galen M.; six brothers; one sister; in-laws Leona and Frank Underkofler; and three brothers-in-law, Claire, Gordon and Herman Underkofler.
Edwin J. Grove
Edwin J. Grove, 81, Clear Lake, died Friday, July 6, 2001, at the Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa.
Edwin James Grove was born Dec. 12, 1919, near Plover, Iowa. He was the son of James E. and Grace (Calhoun) Grove. He graduated from Plover High School in 1939 and attended Estherville Junior College. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Corps during WW II. On Nov. 24, 1946, Edwin married
Kathleen Bucher at Plover. The couple farmed near Plover for 47 years. In 1992, they moved to Clear lake. They also spent nine winters in Hot Springs, Ark.
Edwin was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake and a past member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Pocahontas. He was a member of the Pocahontas Lions Club and was a life member of the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Grove of Clear Lake; a daughter, Dana Creydt and her husband, Russ, of Lakeside, Calif.; two grandchildren, Eva Schulte and her husband, Brock, and Jesse Creydt; two sisters, Catherine Stratiff, of Mesa, Az., and Lillian Benjamin and her husband, Ted, of Britt, Iowa; two brothers, Earl Grove of Seal Beach, Calif., and Gail Gove and his wife, Carol, of Hutchinson, Minn.
Edwin was preceded in death by his parents and eight brothers and sisters.
Jeannette M. Steffa
Memorial services were held Wednesday, June 20, 2001, for Jeannette M. Steffa, 84, of St. David, Az., formerly of Humboldt, Iowa at the Richardon's Remembrance Center in Benson, Az.
Steffa died Thursday, June 17, 2001, at the Quiburi Mission Samaritan Center in Benson. The Rev. Carl Dittemore of First Baptist Church of St. David, Az. officiated at the service.
Jeanette Margaret Davids was born March 2, 1917 to Harm and Margaret Davids of German Township, Grundy County. She was married
to Clarence Steffa in September 1937 in Hampton, Iowa. They resided in Humboldt until 1979 when they moved to St. David, Az.
She is survived by her husband, Clarence; her children, Donald of Phoenix, Az., Raymond and Kathy of Salida, Colo., Janet Santigati, of Phoenix, Lois Ann of St. David, Sharon and David Vestweber of Clear Lake, Gary and Tammy of Glendale, Az.; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a brother, Clarence Davids, of Lakewood, Colo.; three sisters, Billie and Harold Culver of Sheffield, Iowa, Gladys Floy of Thornton, Iowa, and Doris and Ken Ashland of Spirit Lake, Iowa; nieces; nephews; and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, niece; nephew; and a brother.
Harriet Ann Robson
Harriet Ann Robson, 79, of Clear Lake, died Sunday, July 8, 2001 at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn. A Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, July 11, 2001 10:30 a.m., at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 1001 9th Ave S., Clear Lake, with Msgr. Robert Hogan and John Ayers officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Patrick's Catholic Church or Opportunity Village in her name.
Harriet was born Oct. 6, 1921 in Denver, Colo., the daughter of Joseph B. and Harriet (Salmon) Folkedahl. After the death of her mother at the age of one, she was reared by her Uncle Chris and Louise Folkedahl in Clarion, Iowa. Harriet graduated from Clarion High School in 1938. She married
Richard B. Robson Oct. 8, 1938 in Mason City, Iowa. They lived in Clarion until 1972 when they moved to Clear Lake, where they lived in Buzzard's Bay until moving to their present home in 1995.
Harriet enjoyed fishing, gardening, painting, playing bridge, cooking, going to the Surf to dance and assisting her husband in making wine. She was very active in the church and helping others. Harriet was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and North Iowa Wine Club.
Harriet is survived by her husband, Richard (Dick) Robson, Clear Lake; two children, Beth Ann McIntyre and her husband, Garner, Longmont, Colo., and Dan Robson and his wife, Vicky, Emmons, Minn.; six grandchildren, Kris Johnson, Kelly Fuqua, Kim Johnson, Dan Robson Jr. and his wife, Shelley, Danielle Robson, and Jeremy Robson and his wife, Kristin; seven great grandchildren, Alex, Jeff and Janalynne Robson, Kaili Robson, Tyson and Brittney Hart, and Emilie Fuqua; one brother, Joe Folkedahl, Fall Brook, Calif.
Harriet is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Harriet Folkedahl, and half-sister, Norma Milos.
Phyllis A Whitt
Phyllis A. Whitt, 77, of Mt. Vernon, Ind., and formerly of Belton, Mo. died Sunday, July 8, 2001 at her daughter's home in Mt. Vernon.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, July 12 at E.K. George & Sons, Belton Chapel in Belton, Mo. She will be buried in the Belton Cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, at the Belton Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity.
Phyllis was born June 30, 1924 in Mason City, Iowa. She lived the last 20 years in Belton.
She is survived by three sons, Danny R. Whitt, Rosemount, Minn., Douglas R. Whitt, Rosehill, Kan., and Glenn L. Whitt, Norfolk, Neb.; two daughters, Paulette Hawkings, Mt. Vernon, Ind., and Deborah J. Pace, Wake Forest, N.C.; one brother, Jerry Law, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 10 grandchildren, and two great- grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by SMSGT (Ret.) Richard E. Whitt on Jan. 13, 1992.
Marjory Ann Kiefer
Marjory Ann Kiefer, 78, Clear Lake, died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit of North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa. A Memorial Mass will be held Thursday, July 12, 2001, 11 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 1001 9th Ave S., Clear Lake, with Msgr. Robert Hogan officiating. Family will be visiting with friends at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Wednesday, June 11, from 5 - 8 p.m. A Rosary service will be held at 6:30 p.m. and a Scripture Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m. The body is being cremated. The Inurnment will be held at St. Patrick,s Catholic Cemetery at 2 p.m. Thursday. Memorials maybe given to Hospice of North Iowa in her name.
Marjory was born Jan. 30, 1923, the daughter of John and Frances (Oulman) Maher in Lake Mills, Iowa. She was raised on a farm just East of Lake Mills and was in the graduation class of 1942 from Lake Mills. Marge worked for Gordon Osguard at Lake Mills Graphic as a color artist and photographer. She married
Robert Kiefer on July 5, 1943 in Forest City, Iowa in the St. James Catholic Church parsonage with Father Slowy officiating. They settled in Garner, Iowa and opened Kiefer Studio. They had two children, Steven and Mary Jo, in the eight years that they were in Garner. They moved the family and the business to Clear Lake in 1954. They had another child, Kathy. Marge enjoyed her work and was an artist at heart, she was always doodling and drawing pictures of people. She was very committed to her religion and was an active member of St. Patrick,s Catholic Church. When they closed Kiefer Studio after retirement, she contacted every customer she could to see if they wanted the negative of their family. She felt it was a privilege to be able to share in people or families special moments and capture it in a picture. She also enjoyed camping, coin collecting, playing cards, and politics, and after retirement she joined an investment club that she enjoyed very much. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were a special delight to her.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Kiefer, Clear Lake; her son, Steve Kiefer and his wife, Julie, Sedro Wooley, Wash.; two daughters, Mary Jo Keenan and her husband, Tom, Clear Lake, and Kathy Mostrom and her husband, Mark, Ventura, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Adam Comley, Mike Keenan, Kim McLaughlin and Chris Keenan, Matt Mostrom, Brian Mostrom and Mary Louise Egsdahl; nine great grandchildren, Alison, Sean, Taylor, Adam II, Ashley, Aaron, Ashley, Amber, and Annette.
Marjory was preceded in death by her parents, John and Frances Maher; and three brothers, Paul, Robert F. and Robert John Maher.
Larry C. LaGue Jr.
Larry C. LaGue Jr., 38, of 505 West L. St., Forest City, Iowa, died Monday, July 9, 2001 at his home. Funeral services were held Friday, July 13, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Interment was in the Clear Lake Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to Larry C. LaGue Jr. Memorial fund.
Larry was born Feb. 25, 1963 in Mason City, Iowa the son of Larry and Diane (Sorensen) LaGue. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1981 and from NIsACC in 1983. After graduating he worked in Colorado, Wisconsin, Missouri and then moved back to the North Iowa area in 1996. He worked at Winnebago and then at Forest City Foods.
Larry enjoyed working with the public, camping, listening to 50's & 60's music, was a big Buddy Holly Fan, biking, photography and going to the YMCA in Forest City. He was involved with A.A. groups in the Forest City area.
Larry is survived by his parents Larry and Diane LaGue, Clear Lake; a brother, Jeff LaGue and his wife, Domenie, Clear Lake; maternal grandmother, Helen Sorensen, Alden, Iowa; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Esther Majors and P.C. (Shorty) LaGue, and maternal grandfather Dale Sorensen.
Grace V. Anderson
Grace V. Anderson, age 95, of Mason City, Iowa, formerly of Clear Lake, died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.
Memorial services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 14, at Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. Jonathan Swenson officiating. Inurnment will take place at Clear Lake Cemetery on a later date.
According to Grace's wishes, her body was cremated, and there will be no visitation.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Central Gardens of North Iowa, P.O. Box 70, Clear Lake, Iowa, or to Zion Lutheran Church of Clear Lake.
Grace V. Anderson was born on Feb. 11, 1906, at Osseo, Wis., the daughter of Martin Julius and Anna Marie (Larsen) Anderson.
Grace graduated from high school, and went on to further her education by graduating from the University of Minnesota. She spent her lifetime involved in education. From 1926 until 1938, Grace was an elementary educator in the Clear Lake public school system, and from 1938 to 1972, she was the principal of Central Elementary School in Clear Lake. Throughout her career, Grace was awarded with many honors including Clear Lake Schools Teacher of the Year in 1956, Honorary Citizen of Clear Lake in 1950, and Honorary 4th of July Mayor in the 1970's.
She was an active member at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, where she participated in the choir, was a Bible school teacher, took part in the quilting group, and was a member of WELCA. Grace also enjoyed playing bridge.
Grace is survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother; and eight sisters.
