Ethel V. Carlson
Ethel V. Carlson, 85, of Clear Lake, died Saturday, July 21, 2001 at the Oakwood Care Center. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 26, at Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North 4th Street Clear Lake. Inurnment will be held at a later date at the East Side Cemetery, Estherville, Iowa. There will be no visitation, according to her wishes, Mrs. Carlson's body has been cremated.
Ethel was born May 27, 1916 in Alborn, Minn., the daughter of Gust William and Signa Hillfrida (Johnson) Carlson. She worked for many years as a housekeeper and has been a resident of Oakwood Care Center since 1997.
Frances Amelia (Ott) Miller
Frances Amelia (Ott) Miller, 94, of 210 10th Ave. N., Clear Lake, died Saturday, July 21, 2001 at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa. Memorial services will be Wednesday 1:30 p.m. July 25, at the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, Iowa with Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Inurnment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake, Iowa. Visitation will be one hour before the service on Wednesday at the Church. Frances suggests memorials to the Clear Lake United Methodist Church. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, is in charge of the services.
Frances was born April 6, 1907, the daughter of Solomon J. and Evalena (Ferner) Ott in Clear Lake, Iowa. She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1925 and continued her education at Hamilton Business College in Mason City and graduated in March 1926.
On June 25, 1926 she was married
to Willis E. Miller. To this union three children were born: Charles W., Marjorie Joan and Larry A.
In 1930 she was elected to the position of Treasurer of the Methodist Church and continued in this position except for two years while living away from Clear Lake.
After the death of her husband in 1949 she worked in the Treasurer's Office at the County Court House and also was in business until 1956 when she became the full time Secretary- Treasurer of the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake. This position she held until her retirement June 15, 1984.
She was a life-long member of the Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Women. She was a Past Matron of Park Chapter No. 35, Order of Easter Star; Past Regent of Clear Lake Chapter Daughters of American Revolution; and Past President of the Clear Lake Wa-Tan-Ye Club..
She is survived by one son, Larry A. Miller and his wife Norma, Ft. Madison, Iowa; one daughter-in-law, Mona Cooper, Nora Springs, Iowa; five grandchildren, Bradley Miller, Albia, Iowa, Barbara Quam and her husband, Tim, Nora Springs, Iowa, Bryan Miller and his wife, Jeanine, Nora Springs, Iowa, Cristi Prenger, Quincy, Ill., Stephanie Knoch and her husband, Fred, Ft. Madison, Iowa. There are also eight great-grandchildren. Also many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; infant daughter, Joan Miller; son, Charles W. Miller; two brothers, Ralph and Harlan Ott; and one sister, Ruth (Edmond) Lincicum.
Ada M. Hughes
Ada M. Hughes, 87, of Clear Lake, died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
A memorial service was held on Monday, July 23 at the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Inurnment was in the Belmond Cemetery, Belmond, Iowa.
Ada M. (Shahan) Hughes was born on Feb. 2, 1914, rural Belmond, Iowa, the daughter of Lee and Mary (Carter) Shahan. She attended and received her education in the rural country schools at Belmond Township School District #4.
On Nov. 24, 1934, Ada was united in marriage with Weston D. Hughes in Clarion, Iowa. The couple made their home in the rural Belmond area. The couple was blessed with eleven children. On June 16, 1944, Ada was baptized at the Goodell United Methodist Church in Goodell, Iowa.
Ada spent most of her lifetime being a homemaker, taking care of her family.
She was a cook at Jim's Tap in Clear Lake, and in more recent years, Ada worked at Olaf T. Hansen's in Clear Lake until her retirement in March of 1984.
She enjoyed reading, doing word games, and traveling, but her great love and enjoyment was spending time with her family and friends.
Survivors include ten children, Lee W. Hughes of Clear Lake, Gary D. Hughes and his wife, Jo, of Peoria, Az., Barbara K. Pals of Shakopee, Minn., Lyle H. Hughes and his wife, Margaret, of Marion, Iowa, Virginia E. Mennenga of Hubbard, Iowa, Linda C. Helland and her husband, Gene, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Darwin R. Hughes and his wife, Joanne, of Woodbury, Minn, Keith L. Hughes and his wife, Suzette of Trusdale, Iowa, Paul K. Hughes and his wife, Judy, of Parkersburg, Iowa, and Rebecca J. Frerichs and her husband, Steven, of Steamboat Rock, Iowa; 27 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great- grandchildren; one brother, Orville Shahan and his wife, Micky, of Mesa, Az.; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Shahan of Colstrip, Mont., Gladys Pals of Belmond, Irene Shahan of Mason City, Iowa, and Ardie Shahan; brother-in-law, Pete Pals of Belmond; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Phyllis Hughes, of Clear Lake.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Lola Mae; four grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; brothers, Harry, Carroll, Howard, Edwin, and Stanley; sister, Lola; and two sons-in-law, Larry Pals and Kyle Mennenga.
Elizabeth Meier Groh
Elizabeth Meier Groh, 90, of Clear Lake, passed away Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at the USA Healthcare Center, Mason City, Iowa. Her funeral was held Saturday, July 21, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garner, Iowa with Pastor Clyde Kieschnick officiating. Music was provided by organist, Ellen Kieschnick who accompanied congregational hymns and sang in a duet with Jody Roeber. Ushers were Alvin "Pete" Hansen and Fred Weiss. Pallbearers were Merlin Braun, Randy Buchan, Allen Green, Gene Jakoubek, Ron Spieker and Charles Springer. Interment was at Concord Township Cemetery in Garner. Cataldo Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be directed to St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Elizabeth Meier Groh, the daughter of Phillip and Omie (Nolte) Henkel, was born April 12, 1911 in Norka, Russia which is now part of Germany. She moved with her family to the United States at the age of two and settled on a farm near Hayfield. She attended school at Hayfield. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garner. On Nov. 20, 1932 she was married
to Robert Meier at St. Paul Lutheran Church. They were the first couple to be married
at St. Paul. They made their home north of Britt where Elizabeth raised chickens and helped her husband farm. On May 26, 1976 Robert passed away. On June 4, 1978 she was married
to Fred Groh at St. Paul Lutheran Church. They made their home in Clear Lake. Fred passed away in December of 1993. Due to ill health, Elizabeth moved to the USA Healthcare Center in Mason City in 1994. She enjoyed flowers and gardening, along with church activities at St. Paul Lutheran Church where she was a member.
She is survived by her son, Gerald Meier and his wife, Elise, of Clear Lake; two granddaughters, Cathy McDougle and her husband, James, of Excelsior, Minn. and Cindy Meier of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; a step-daughter, Shirley Dorow and her husband, the Rev. Maynard, of Arden Hills, Minn.; four step- grandchildren, John Dorow and his wife, Julie and their two children, Adam and Hannah, of St. Paul, Minn., Mary Nelson, and her husband, Rich, of St. Paul, Peter Dorow and his wife, Monic and their two sons, Jason and Matthew, of Burnsville, Minn., and Sara Dorow of Minneapolis, Minn.; and two step-sisters, Mollie Davis and Ann Boonstra of Mason City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; a sister, Margaret Braun; a brother in Germany; a step-sister, Kathryn Warner; and two step-brothers, Pete and George Green.
Dustin James Nelson
Dustin James Nelson, 23, of Redford, Mich., died Monday, July 16, 2001 in Michigan. A Memorial Service was held Monday, July 23, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake. Inurnment was in the Clear Lake Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Dustin James Nelson Memorial Fund.
Dustin was born Feb. 6, 1978, in Garden City, Mich., the son of Robert and Linda (Dickirson) Nelson. He attended schools in Garden City. Dustin enjoyed coming to Clear Lake and spending time with his Grandmother and cousins.
Dustin is survived by his father, Robert Nelson, Phoenix, Az.; one brother, Darren Nelson and his wife, Michele, Redford, Mich.; his niece, Kayleigh Nelson, Redford; maternal grandmother, Lorene Haddy and her husband, Speck, Clear Lake; and paternal grandmother, Ginny Nelson, Detroit, Mich.; aunts and uncles Diana Byington and her husband, Tim, Clear Lake, Darcy Skellenger and her husband, Dan, Clear Lake, Jeffrey Pierce and his wife, Amy, Rochester, Minn., Richard Nelson and his wife, Jackie, Jackson, Minn., Betty Burnette and her husband, Jim, Westland, Mich., and Jody Cramer, Owatonna, Minn.
Dustin was preceded in death by his mother in 1995.
Edward Allen Coyle
Edward Allen Coyle, 82, Garner, Iowa, died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa. Funeral services were held Friday, July 20, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake. Interment was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City. Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa in the name of Edward A. Coyle.
Edward was born Feb. 25, 1919, in Thornton, Iowa, the son of Edward T. and Dulice (Hartwig) Coyle. He farmed north of Miller, Iowa in Ellington Township. He married
Edna Spitler Dec. 7, 1941. He later worked at Northern Natural Gas. He was a resident at Concord Care Center, Garner. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Miller, IA.
Edward is survived by three children, Judy Millett, Waterloo, Iowa, Larry Coyle and his wife, Kathy, Loomis, Calif., and Donna Todd, Waterloo, Iowa; five grandchildren, Jolene Berger and her husband, Perry, Waterloo, Iowa, Jay Millett and his wife, Kelly, Waterloo, Iowa, Kristine Falk, Chandler, Az., David Coyle, Walnut Creek, Calif., and Wesley Todd, Waterloo, Iowa; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Jim Coyle and his wife, Judy, Beaver Dam, Wis.; two sisters, Vivian Buss and her husband, Gerald, Hampton, Iowa, and Doris Jeffrey, Rockford, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Mary Coyle, Ventura, and Carol Coyle, Bemidji, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Margaret E. Hornbuckle
Margaret E. Hornbuckle, 80, Mason City, Iowa died Wednesday, July 18, 2001 at the USA Heathcare Center, Mason City. Funeral services were held Friday, July 20, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Wesley, Iowa. Interment was at the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Margaret E. Hornbuckle Memorial Fund, established for Masses to be said at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Margaret was born July 19, 1920, in Milltown, Wis., the daughter of Andrew and Celilia Ann (Schuler) Gollner. She moved in infancy with her family to Wesley. She was raised on the family farm and attended rural school. She then moved to Waterloo, Iowa and worked at Rath Packing Plant. Margaret married
Harold LeRoy Hornbuckle July 19, 1946 in Waterloo. She continued to live in Waterloo until 1992 when, due to ill health, she moved to the Clear Lake and Mason City area to be close to her family.
Margaret loved shopping for antiques. She also loved motorcycles and was an avid Harley fan. She was a member of the American Motorcycle Association. She was also a member of the St. Edwards Catholic Church, Waterloo.
Margaret is survived by her son, Dick Hornbuckle and his wife, Vickie, Mason City; four grandchildren, Kimberly Ann Bailey and her husband, Mike, and their child, Maddison Raye, Minneapolis, Minn., Chad Hornbuckle and his wife, Debbie, and their children, Alex, Jake and Cassie, Minneapolis, Jason Hornbuckle and his wife, Heather, and their children, Jonathan and Allysa, Minneapolis, and Christopher Hornbuckle and his wife, Teresa, Minneapolis; her brother-in-law, Francis Pfeffer, Titonka, Iowa and her sister-in-law, Dora Gollner, Britt, Iowa.
Margaret is preceded in death by her parents; step mother, Grace Gollner; her husband, Harold, on July 23, 1986; brother, Charles Gollner; and her sister, Vanda Pfeffer.
Susan Marie Stinehart Davidson
Susan Marie Stinehart Davidson, 45, of Ottumwa, Iowa, formerly of Clear Lake, died Thursday, July 19, 2001, due to complications of diabetes and pneumonia, at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 24, at the Ward- Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North 4th Street, Clear Lake. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Susan was born on Nov. 6, 1955, at Strawberry Point, Iowa. When she was three months old, she was lovingly adopted by Orville and Dolores (Schloemer) Stinehart. Susan was raised in Clear Lake where she attended school and graduated in 1975. She spent most of her lifetime as a homemaker, taking care of her children. Susan enjoyed animals, especially dogs, and she loved to spend her free time talking with her friends.
Survivors include her children, Jason Allen and his fiancée, Amanda, of Des Moines, Iowa, Ed Allen and his wife, Melissa, of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Brian Allen and his wife, Bonita, of Ottumwa; three grandchildren, Melody and Mercedes Allen of Des Moines, and Madison Allen of West Des Moines; two sisters, Nancy Holman and her husband, Bob, of Clear Lake, and Sally Johnson and her husband, Mark, of Clear Lake; two nephews, Robert and Jameson Deckard of Clear Lake; and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Orville Stinehart on Sept. 17, 2000, and Dolores Stinehart on Dec. 20, 2000; her husband, Jim Davidson; and an infant son.
Evelyn Ann Kliegl
Evelyn Ann Kliegl Plonsky, 72, died July 14, 2001 in Indiana. A memorial Mass will be held Saturday, August 4, 10 a.m., at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 1001 9th Ave S, Clear Lake, with Msgr. Robert Hogan officiating. Visitation will be held Friday from 6 - 8 p.m. at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel. A scripture rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. Inurnment will be at St. Joseph-Elmwood Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa. According to her wishes, she has been cremated. Evelyn was born Dec. 31, 1928, in Cylinder, Iowa, in her home, the daughter of George and Pauline (Lena) DeBri Kliegl. She graduated from Cylinder High School and continued her education at the Hamilton School of Commerce (Hamilton Business College), Mason City. She married
John F. Plonsky of Mason City, Jan. 31, 1951. Evelyn lived in Cedar Falls, Iowa for twelve years, and in Tucson, Az. for sixteen years before moving to Des Moines, Iowa. She also lived in Mason City, Hampton, and Graettinger, Iowa before residing with her daughter and family in Carmel, Ind.
Evelyn is survived by one daughter, Karen Kiefer and her husband, Daniel, Carmel, Ind.; three grandchildren, Rebecca, Joseph, and Patrick; one sister, Juanita Kelly, Buhl, Idaho; two brothers, Eugene Kliegl, Farewell Bend, Or. and Richard Kliegl, Webster City, Iowa.
Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Dorothy Beck; and two brothers, George Klieg and Lloyd Kliegl.
Ruth S. Sondrol
Ruth S. Sondrol, age 90, of 701 Oaknoll Drive in Iowa City, Iowa, died Sunday, July 1, 2001 in the Oaknoll Health Center in Iowa City from complications of a stroke.
There will be no visitation. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2001 at 2 p.m. at the Clear Lake Cemetery in Clear Lake, Iowa. Ruth was born August 29, 1910 in Hanlontown, Iowa, the daughter of Sander and Carrie Molsberry Sanderson. She was raised in Cerro Gordo County on the family farm. Ruth married
Thorkel E. Sondrol on Dec. 2, 1942 in Mason City. Mr. Sondrol died in March of 1973.
On Jan. 29, 1976, she married
Dr. Harold W. Morgan in Jupiter, Fla. Dr. Morgan died in September of 1988. Ruth received her training at Mercy Hospital in Mason City, Iowa and for 25 years was a registered nurse at various hospitals and doctors offices throughout north Iowa.
Ruth had lived in Englewood, Fla. since retirement in the mid 1980's.
She was a member of TTT, American Legion Auxiliary, Community Presbyterian Church in Englewood, Fla. and First Congregational Church in Clear Lake.
Ruth is survived by her children, Susan Sondrol Jones and her husband, William, of Iowa City and Thorkel E. "Sandy" Sondrol of the Cayman Islands; one sister, Marjory Mason of Boise, Idaho; four grandchildren, Meghan Jones, Merrick Jones, Thorkel " Erik" Sondrol, and Karn Sondrol; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; and five brothers, Stanley, Maynard, Alton, Robert and Daniel.
Marvin E. (Pete) Peterson
Marvin K. (Pete) Peterson, 74, of rural Clear Lake, Iowa died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001 at his family farm after a lengthy illness.
Services were held Saturday, Aug.4, 10 a.m. at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Thomas Healey, Chaplin of Hospice of North Iowa officiating. Interment was in the Clear Lake Cemetery with Military Honors by the Clear Lake VFW Post # 04868. Family suggest memorials to Marvin K. Peterson Memorial Fund.
Marvin was born March 12, 1927 in Mason City, Iowa the son of Andrew and Inga (Jorgenson) Peterson. He attended County School #8 and then Clear Lake schools until he enlisted in the Navy. He served in the South Pacific in World War II and in the Korean Conflict. After his discharge he worked for North Western Portland Cement, Frederickson's Welding and then went into the trailer repair service at Atlas Motor Homes, Lifetime Motor homes, Forester Trailers and Paul's Mobile Homes. In 1986, he opened North Iowa RV Repair at his family farm and worked until he retired due to his health.
In 1946, he married
Margaret Miller and to that marriage, five children were born. In 1960 he married
Jean Elliott. They enjoyed spending their winters near Austin, Texas. Marvin is survived by his loving wife Jean; daughters Margaret Dorenkamp of Hillsboro, Mo., Judy Smith and her husband, Ron, of Titusville, Fla., Patty Buland and her husband, Mike, of Monument, Colo., and Mary Lou Wyborny and her husband, Mick, of Mason City, Iowa. He is also survived by his stepson, Steve Elliott, Clear Lake; stepdaughter, Karen Elliott-Green, both of Clear Lake; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one uncle, Holger Jorgenson, of Ventura, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Inga Peterson; and his son, William Peterson.
