James S. Ludeman, 79, of 1000 N. Eisenhower Avenue, Mason City, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. Memorial services were held Saturday, Dec. 13, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Mason City, with the Rev. Samuel Hamilton-Poore officiating. Private family inurnment services will be held at a later date. Memorials may be given to Lime Creek Nature Center, Hospice of North Iowa, First Congregational United Church of Christ or donor's choice.
James was born Oct. 15, 1924 in Mason City, the son of George and Avis (Pedelty) Ludeman. He graduated from Mason City High School and attended Mason City Junior College and Hamilton School of Business. James enlisted in the US Army in 1943 serving in England, France, Belgium, Luxemburg and Germany where he fought in the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe battles and campaigns. He received a Purple Heart and was honorably discharged in 1946. James returned home and married
Carole F. Hutchens April 13, 1947 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He worked as an abstract and real estate broker before he began farming. He farmed for 47 years, retiring in 1978. James was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Farm Bureau, North Iowa Beef Producers, Iowa Woolgrowers Association, 4-H Leaders, North Iowa Rod & Gun Club, Lime Creek Nature Center and the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Carole E. Ludeman, Mason City; daughters, Candice Marshall and husband, Pat, Clear Lake, Pamela Downing and husband, Mike, White Bear Lake, Minn., Kristine Gatewood and husband, Steve, Brownsville, Texas, Joy Under Baggage, Rapid City, S.D.; grandchildren, Sarah, Amy, Richard, Katie, John, Dustin, Jacob and Daniel; great-grandchildren, Mia and Kacie; sister, Georgia Ludeman of Mason City.
James was preceded in death by his parents.
Rosemary Snider, 72, of Hampton, Iowa, died Monday, Dec. 15, 2003 at Franklin General Hospital, Hampton, Iowa.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, Dec. 17, 4 - 7 p.m., at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton, Iowa. Funeral service will be held Thursday, Dec. 18, 10:30 a.m. at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home with Pastor David Nelson. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.
Rosemary was born May 15, 1931 in Hampton to Randolph and Maude (Lumley) Zeiger. She attended high school in Swaledale, Iowa. She married
Ivol Wayne Snider and was a homemaker.
She enjoyed taking nature walks, playing cards, dancing and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her son, Kirk and his wife, Liz, Mathews, Hampton; two daughters, Karmen McPherren, Clear Lake, and Jolene and her husband, Larry Huinker, West Union, Iowa; a special friend, Joe Boelkes, Hampton; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a brother, Doug.
Patricia Ruth Samosky, 70, 15278 Oakwood Ave., Clear Lake, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2003 at the Mercy Medical Center of North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa. Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 20, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake. Pastor Thomas Healey officiated. Following the service the body was cremated. Memorials may be given to the Patricia R. Samosky Memorial Fund.
Patricia was born Aug. 22, 1933, in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of Stanley and Lucille (Roth) Decker. She graduated from East High School, Des Moines. Pat married
Vern F. Daggett and lived in Des Moines. She later married
Marvin Samosky. She worked for Empire Builders in Des Moines for 33 years as an office manager. She also worked for Universal Express. Pat moved to Clear Lake in the early 1990's and worked at Opportunity Village.
Pat really lived for her family. She enjoyed playing games with her kids and grandkids and shopping with the grandkids. She was a great cook, loved bowling, puzzles and fishing on the lake. She was a "reader" and spent time at the library. She also loved to watch old mystery movies and was proud to be an avid Hawkeye Fan.
Pat is survived by her two daughters, Karen Burnett and her husband, Jeff Roe, Clear Lake, and Lynn Daggett and her fiancé, Alex Dowidchuk, Lake Zurich, Ill.; two grandchildren, David Bozarth and his girlfriend, Susan, Clear Lake and Craig Burnett, Iowa City, Iowa; six great-children, Colten and Chris Bozarth, Shelby, Nicholas and Samantha Jo Burnett, and Bryan McCrea; and one brother, Wayne Decker and his wife, JoAnn, Des Moines.
Pat was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Roy Kenneth Decker.
Orvin K. "Whitey" Whitehurst 76, of 1805 N. 8th St., Clear Lake, died Monday, Dec. 15, 2003, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 20, at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Interment was at the Clear Lake Cemetery. Family suggest memorials to Hospice Of North Iowa or Dialysis Center of Mercy Medical Center.
Orvin was born July 31, 1927, the son of Noah E. and Zora Nell (Wyant) Whitehurst at rural Britt, Iowa. Orvin attended school in Britt and Garner, Iowa. Orvin married
Gladys Lowe on Oct. 13, 1945, and then entered the US Army Oct. 18, 1945. He served in the Military Police during WWII and following the service moved back to Ventura, Iowa. He drove truck and helped farm for Lloyd Law. He later drove transport for Skelly Oil Co,. later known as Skelgas, for 27 years. In 1961 he moved to a farm northwest of Clear Lake. Orvin married
Janice Gelner on May 5, 1975 at Pittsfield, Ill., and in 1980 moved to California and worked at Costa Mesa Memorial Hospital. In 1988 they retired and moved back to Clear Lake. He enjoyed his horses, dogs, cats, and woodworking, as well as rounding up cattle in North Dakota. Orvin was well known for his jokes, clever stories, his smirk and spending time with his family and friends.

Kathryn S. Koch, 90, of Clear Lake, died Monday, Dec. 15, 2003 at Muse-Norris Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City. Funeral services were held at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, Friday, Dec. 19, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz, officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Kathryn Koch Memorial Fund.
Kathryn was born Dec. 29, 1913, in Clarion, Iowa, the oldest daughter of Samuel E. and Madge Hilda Mechem Shannon (Johnson).
Kathryn was married
to her first husband, Galen Hauge, on Sept. 13, 1933, in Webster City, Iowa. Galen passed away on March 21, 1965.
Kathryn was a member of various groups and organizations. She strongly supported the Democratic Party and in the early 1950's, ran for Hancock County Recorder. She was a 4-H leader, belonged to the Garfield Township Community Club and was active in the Hancock County Farm Bureau. After moving to Ventura and Clear Lake, she graduated from Mason City Junior College with an Associate in Arts Degree. For a number of years she taught school, was a census enumerator, member of the Key-Notes, member of the Wa-Tan-Ye Club, was in the Clear Lake Women's Club, and enjoyed art and poetry clubs in Clear Lake. Kathryn had her poetry book, entitled "'Nuff Said," published in January, 2003. She loved homemaking, was an excellent cook and baker and had a flair for interior design. She was a very talented musician and enjoyed playing her organ and piano. She played the organ at several Governor's Balls in Clear Lake and played for various functions throughout North Iowa. Kathryn was a true humanitarian and thoughtfully remembered all the birthdays of her family, including grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Kathryn was married
to Homer Hitchcock and, lastly, to Dean Koch. For a number of years she resided in her home in Clear Lake and enjoyed the companionship of her youngest son, Tony.
Survivors include her three surviving children and their spouses, Gary Hauge and his wife, Marieluise, of Ocala, Fla.; Cynthia Wolfram and her husband, Robert, of Ventura, and Tony Hauge, of Clear Lake; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Susan Tyler; her sister, Margaret Eileen Lauster, and her three husbands.
Kathryn will be greatly missed by her family and a host of friends, many with whom she maintained close contact.
Bonnie Mae Miller, 67, 813 6th Pl. N., Clear Lake, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003 at the Mercy Medical Center of North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 23, at the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jan Burnett officiating. Interment was in the Clear Lake Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Bonnie Miller Memorial Fund.
Bonnie was born Aug. 24, 1936 in Clear Lake, the daughter of Lloyd and Ina (Edwards) Miller. She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1955 and attended LaJames College. Bonnie operated a beauty parlor in Bode, Iowa from 1959 1962 and Bonnie's Beauty Shop in Lake Mills from 1962 1991.
Bonnie enjoyed genealogy of her family. She loved her family and especially her nieces and nephew. She was a caregiver for her aunts and several other people. Bonnie was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake.
Bonnie is survived by two brothers, LaVern Miller and his wife, Pearl, Clear Lake and Dwayne Miller and his wife, Ardith, Charles City, Iowa; a sister, Dorothy Heimendinger and her husband, Orville, Osage, Iowa; eleven nieces and a nephew; numerous great-nieces and nephews; and special to Bonnie, Aunt Irene Miller, Clear Lake, and nephew, Kenneth Heimendinger, Orchard, Iowas.
Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Orville Miller.

John "Jack" Philip Furleigh, 68, of Clear Lake, died Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at the USA Health Care Center in Mason City.
A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Clear Lake, with Msgr. Robert Hogan officiating. Military honors will be by members of the United States Marine Corps and by members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Clear Lake. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Clear Lake Cemetery.
The family of Jack Furleigh has requested that memorial contributions be made to the American Legion Boys State, St. Patrick's Catholic Church, or to Opportunity Village in Clear Lake in his memory.
Jack Furleigh was born on Dec. 24, 1934, in Clear Lake, the son of Philip and Anna (Heidenreich) Furleigh. He attended and received his education in the Clear Lake School system, graduating from Clear Lake High School. He was inducted into the U.S. Marine Corps on July 1, 1953, in Des Moines and was honorably discharged on June 30, 1956, in Miami, Fla. After his honorable discharge, Jack came back to the north Iowa area and attended and graduated from NIACC in Mason City, and also graduated from the University of Iowa with a B.A. degree. After completing his schooling he worked for State Farm Insurance in Mason City, and also worked for Allied Group Insurance in Des Moines until his retirement.
He was united in marriage to Jean Diesburg on Jan. 7, 1968, in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Jack was very active in doing volunteer work for Opportunity Village in Clear Lake, and the American Legion Boy's State. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family.
He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Clear Lake, past commander for the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Clear Lake, and was very active in the Republican Party in Iowa.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Philip Edward Furleigh and his wife, Margaret, of Minneapolis, Minn., James "Tony" Anthony Furleigh and his wife, Laura, of Mason City, Janelle Marie Holland and son-in-law, Anthony, Holland of Woden, Iowa, and Curt Thompson and his wife, Dona, of Forest City, Iowa; five grandchildren, Steven Thompson, Josh Holland, Patrick Furleigh, Katherine and Gabrielle Furleigh; brothers and sister, Phyllis Pederson, Lake Mills, Iowa, Roberta Goodman and her husband, Richard, Urbandale, Iowa, Richard Furleigh and his wife, Dorothy, Oelwein, Iowa, James Furleigh and his wife, Mary, Fallbrook, Calif. and Frank Furleigh, Texas City, Texas; as well as other relatives and many friends.

Richard "Rich" Gaylord Anderson, 71, of 200 North Shore Drive, Clear Lake, died Friday, Dec. 19, 2003 at the Muse Norris Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Interment was at the Clear Lake Cemetery, with military honors by the Clear Lake VFW. Memorials may be left to Hospice of North Iowa, KCMR, Zion Lutheran Church, ISU Companion Animal Fund, Clear Lake Public Library or charity of your choice.
Richard was born the son of Olaf A. and Alice Izetta (Fletcher) Anderson, on Feb. 7, 1932 at rural Eagle Grove, Iowa. Richard graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1949. He enlisted in the United States Army in November 1952, and was discharged in September of 1954. After his military service he was employed for twenty years in men's retail clothing business at Leuthold Company in Eagle Grove, Iowa and Platteville, Wisconsin. He later worked for St. Clair Starks in Mason City, Iowa. Richard married
Karen Griffith, Sept. 5, 1959, at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove. In 1987 Richard began driving van for Northern Trails AEA, retiring in 1997.
In 1944 Richard was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the Holmes Lutheran Church. Richard was an avid golfer, enjoyed playing baseball and softball for Eagle Grove City League, watching Fox News channel, tennis, WWE wrestling. He was a member of Heritage Foundation, Zion Lutheran Church, and a charter member of Rush Limbaugh's "The Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy".
Richard is survived by his wife, Karen Anderson, of Clear Lake; daughter, Laura Toohey and her husband, Vern, of Britt, Iowa; son, Mitch Anderson of East Wallingford, Vt.; two grandchildren, Ashley Phinney, Clear Lake, and Meagan Anderson, Forest City, Iowa; a sister, Ruby Jayne Smith and her husband, Dale M. of Eagle Grove; mother-in-law, Mildred Griffith, Clarion Care Center, Clarion, Iowa; several nieces and nephews, and his special Yorkie companion, Oliver Richard Anderson.
His parents and his father-in-law, Cecil Griffith, preceded Richard in death.

Arthur E. Boehnke, 94, of Garner, Iowa died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003 at the Concord Care Center, Garner.
His funeral was Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church northeast of Garner with the Rev. Carl Hedberg officiating. Music will be provided by organist, Louise Boehnke and soloist, Marilyn Hayes. Ushers will be Bill Boehnke and Tom Boehnke. Casket bearers will be Robert Boehnke, Philip Boehnke, Carol Chiko, Mark Boehnke, Dale Boehnke and Carrol Boehnke. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Arthur Emil Boehnke, the son of Carl August and Mathilda (Dorow) Boehnke, was born Nov. 2, 1909 on a farm northeast of Garner. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church rural Garner. He attended St. John,s Parochial School and Garner High School. On November 17, 1935 he married
Lillian Margaret Hollatz at St. John,s Lutheran Church. On Nov. 17, 1989, they celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary prior to Lillian's untimely death on Jan. 2, 1990. They farmed northeast of Garner until 1974, when they retired and moved into Garner.
Arthur was an active lifetime member of St. John's Lutheran Church and was deacon for six years, Lutheran Laymen's League president for six years, treasurer for three years, AAL member and president for 10 years, was an active member of the church Board of Education and was a committed Sunday school teacher for more than 15 years. Arthur was devoted to his family and farming and remained active in the community through the Garner Lions Club.
He is survived by his children, Robert A. Boehnke and wife, Karen, of Clear Lake, Philip C. Boehnke and wife, Sharon, of Garner, Mark A. Boehnke and wife, Roseann, of Garner, Dale W. Boehnke and wife, Annette of Lewisville, Texas and Ruth E. Chiko and husband, Carl, of Surrey, B.C., Canada; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Alice Boehnke of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Laura Boehnke of Ventura; a brother-in-law, LeRoy Hollatz of Garner; many nieces and nephews; and other caring relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian; his parents; brothers, Albert, Charles, William, Herman and the Rev. Arnold Boehnke; and a sister, Tillie Hinrichs.

Arthur Leroy Juhl, 78, 5851 South Shore Dr., Clear Lake, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2003 at Muse-Norris Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa. Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 29, at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Interment was held at Memorial Park Cemetery with Military Honors by the Clear Lake V.F.W. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family.
Art was born March 29, 1925 on a farm southeast of Clear Lake, the son of Axel and Katherine (Petersen) Juhl. His family moved to Ventura when Art was in fifth grade. He graduated from Ventura High School in 1942. He played in all sports in school. Art served in the Army from 1942 1947. He served in the European Theatre WWII and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and two Battle Stars. Art married
Ruth Winters, June 8, 1947 in Clear Lake. They had two daughters, Claudia and Connie. They farmed for seven years at Eldora, Iowa. When they returned to Clear Lake Art worked for Dahlen Transport for 30 years. He served on Local 828 Union Board as Trustee and later as secretary. He served as the Union Steward at Dahlen Transport for 20 years. He was also awarded a 30-year Safe Driving Award from the National Safety Council. Art drove over three million miles accident free.
Art was confirmed and a life long member of Zion Lutheran Church. He was a life member of the V.F.W. Post 4868 where he served as Commander for four years, Adjutant for eight years, Honor Guard for many years, Clear Lake Noon Lions and Odd Fellows. He also worked as custodian at the Outing Club, Clear Lake, for 15 years, a job he loved and enjoyed as well as all the families living there, who considered him a part of their family.
Art was a "happy go lucky" man, whistled or sang all the time. He loved life to the fullest extent. He loved his family so much, especially his three grandkids. They made his life new. He loved all people and had many friends. Art and Ruth enjoyed 56 years of life together.
Art is survived by his wife, Ruth; two daughters, Claudia Michaelis and her husband, Steve, Stillwater, Minn. and Connie Vitzthum and her husband, Frank, Algona, Iowa; three grandchildren, Melinda, Michelle and Matthew Vitzthum; sisters, Alice Thompson, Tacoma, Wash. and Lillian Schlei, Garner, Iowa; sister-in-law, Ruth Enabit Juhl, Mason City; brother-in-law, Elwood Pilz, Clear Lake, and sister-in-law, Shirley Ruddick and her husband, Elvin, Marshalltown, Iowa.

Joan Shirley Hansmeier, 72, Foley, Minn., formerly of Fertile, Iowa, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003, at home. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Dec. 31, 10:30 a.m. at the Church of Christ, Fertile, with the Rev. Kurt Gallmeyer officiating. Interment will be at Brush Point Cemetery, Fertile. Memorials may be given to the Joan Hansmeier Memorial Fund.
Joan was born April 8, 1931, in Foley, Minn., the daughter of William Baker and Mary Elizabeth (Biggers) Gray.
She graduated from Foley High School. She worked at the Foley Bakery. Joan was a W.A.C. in the U. S. Army. Joan married
Marvin G. Hansmeier on Oct. 8, 1949 in Foley, Minn. They were married
49 years.
Joan and Marvin moved to Fertile in the spring of 1954. She was a bookkeeper for Fertile Quarry, then later a nurses aid at Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Forest City, Iowa. She helped her husband as a bookkeeper while he ran the gas station.
Joan was involved with the Girl Scouts in Fertile. She loved singing and listening to music, knitting, crocheting, traveling and her pets. Following her husband's death, she moved back to her hometown of Foley. After returning home, she was very active in the Presbyterian Church in Foley. Joan was a member of the Church of Christ in Fertile.
Joan is survived by five sons, Bruce and his wife, Glenna, Clear Lake, Mick and his wife, Deb, Minneapolis, Minn., Doug and his wife, Lisa, Maple Grove, Minn., Craig and his wife, Dawn, Fertile, and Todd and his partner, Steve, Clear Lake; nine grandchildren, Joe, Rene, Courtney Maskarina and her husband, Shane, Brent, Shane, Dan, Tara, Abby and John; three great-grandchildren, Taylor, Shelbey and Hayden Maskarina; and one brother, Les Gray and his wife, Mary, San Bernardino, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marvin, on Oct. 21, 1998; two sisters, Margie and Doris, and one brother, Bud.
