Lloyd O. "Louie" Lugg, 78, of 4 3rd St NW, Mason City, died Monday, April 19, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.
Funeral services were held Thursday, April 22, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Paul D. Finger, officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with full military honors by the Clear Lake V.F.W. Post 4868.
Memorials may be left to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 329 East State Street, Mason City, in Louie's honor.
Lloyd O. Lugg, the son of Ray and Anna (Dierich) Lugg, was born Aug. 2, 1925 in Parkers Prairie, Minn. He was adopted by his aunt and uncle, Charles and Julia Lugg, at two weeks of age. He was baptized and confirmed at the Mona Lutheran Church in Mona. He attended school in Osage and Mona, graduating from Lyle, Minn. After graduation he worked on a ranch in Fort Denton, Mont. Louie entered the United States Army in December 1944. His training lead him to Texas. Home on leave, he married
Dorothy Norcross on April 17, 1945. Upon returning from his leave, he was relocated to the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged as a tech sergeant in November 1946.
Upon returning from the service he worked for John Deere in Waterloo, Iowa. He later moved back to Mason City where he drove truck for 35 years, retiring in 1987. Louie enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing trips to Canada, and wintering with Dorothy in Texas.
Louie was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church of Mason City and the Clear Lake V.F.W.
Louie is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Mason City; two sons, Steven Lugg and his wife, Paulette, Ventura, Iowa, Dan Lugg and his wife, Doris, Rockford, Iowa; two grandchildren, Brian Lugg, Cedar Falls, Iowa and Sarah Lugg, Ventura. Also surviving him are three sisters, Irene Baird, Boulder City, Nev., Edna Merriman, Houston, Texas, Jeanette Riley, McAllen, Texas; one brother-in-law, Elmo Vivian, Weslaco, Texas; one sister-in-law, Bettye Lugg, Mercedes, Texas, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by both sets of parents; one sister, Adeline Vivian; two brothers, Arthur and Raymond; one sister-in-law, Mae Lugg, and three brothers-in-law.
Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, Mason City, was in charge of arrangements.
Jean L. Godden, 78, of Clear Lake, died Thursday, April 22, 2004, at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City. Funeral Services were held Monday, April 26, at the First Congregational Church, Clear Lake, with Pastor Thomas Healey officiating. Interment was at the Clear Lake Cemetery.
Jean was born Aug. 17, 1925, in Algona, Iowa the daughter of Loyal and Fern (Andrews) Young. She graduated from Algona High School in 1943 and married
Lester Godden, her high school sweetheart, on Sept. 27, 1943.
Jean worked at Camp Headquarters in Camp Cooke, California until her husband went overseas. She then returned to Algona and worked at Security State Bank until 1948 when she and her husband moved to Clear Lake.
Jean will always be remembered for her warmth, deep faith, joyous laugh, her knitting, painting, golf, and her devotion to family and friends.
Jean is survived by her loving husband, Les Godden of Clear Lake; her daughter, Doxandra Weber and her husband, Ron, Nevada, Iowa; her son, Kurt and his wife, Angela, Sterling Heights, Mich.; a brother, Dixon Young and his wife, Shirley, Algona; a brother, Keith Young and his wife, Marilyn, of Waterloo, Iowa and four loving granddaughters, Kirsten and Meesha Weber of Nevada and Holly and Stephanie Godden of Sterling Heights.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents.

Virginia "Ginni" Overgaard, 61, of 1201 East Lake Street, Ventura, died Saturday, April 24, 2004 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, after a year long battle with cancer. Memorial services were held Tuesday, April 27, at the Ventura United Methodist Church. Inurnment was at Ventura Cemetery.
Memorials may be left to the Virginia Overgaard Memorial Fund.
Virginia Lucille, "Ginni", the daughter of Gordon and Perle (Boutilier) Schubert, was born March 10, 1943 in Britt, Iowa. She attended Ventura High School, graduating in 1961. She married
John Overgaard on Sept. 23, 1961 at the Ventura United Methodist Church. Ginni worked at the Harbor Inn for 31 years. She owned the business for the last 15 of those years. She enjoyed the restaurant business, and was always a gracious host to her patrons. She met so many wonderful people who became very special friends.
Ginni was a member of the Ventura United Methodist Church. She played in several area bridge clubs, which was her passion. She loved flower gardening and bird watching, and spent countless hours enjoying both of theses hobbies. She also traveled to several countries abroad, as well as throughout the United States. Ginni's greatest joys were her seven grandchildren. She attended countless school activities, sporting events, concerts, and grandparents, days. She will be fondly remembered and loved by these children. She was a wonderful and very special grandmother.
Ginni is survived by her husband, John, of Ventura; four children, Renee Denny and her husband, Steve, Garner, Iowa, Bob Overgaard and his wife, Jamie, Lakewood, Colo., Roxanne Anderson and her husband, Allen, Williams, Iowa, and Ryan Overgaard and his friend, Monica Torkelson, Garner and seven grandchildren, Jordan, Summer, Andrea, and Faith Anderson, Tanner and Tyler Denny, and Taylor Pesicka. Also surviving are her father, Gordon Schubert and his wife, Donna, of Algona, Iowa; two brothers, Jim Schubert and his wife, Gretchen, Huntley, Mont., Ronald Schubert, South Bend, Ind., one sister, Rebecca Schubert and her husband, Bob Claubaugh, Taylors Falls, Minn., as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Perle.
Beatrice "Bea" Saucke 84, of 100 N. 4th St., Clear Lake, Iowa passed away unexpectedly Saturday, April 24, 2004, at home.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 3, at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St., in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. There will be 3 p.m. graveside service Monday at the Gowrie Cemetery, Gowrie, Iowa.
Friends may greet the family from 7 - 8 p.m. Sunday, May 2, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake.
Beatrice M. Hanson was born Aug. 2, 1919, the daughter of Adolph and Esther (Pearson) Hanson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, and was a graduate of the American Institute of Business in Des Moines.
She married
Ted Saucke on June 28, 1942, at Zion Lutheran Church in Gowrie. They owned a retail hardware business in Clear Lake for many years. As an executive legal secretary, local attorneys Thorkel Sondrol, Sr., Thorkel Sondrol, Jr., Mark Schoeller and most recently, Matt Berry, employed her. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, and belonged to Praise Circle.
She was humbled when being honored as Mother of the Year in 1972 and as Legal Secretary of the Year in 1980. Her hobbies included being Ted's Cessna co-pilot, riding scooters and being a test cook for Betty Crocker Kitchens.
Her surviving family includes daughters Linda (Tom) Sage, of Mason City, Lois (Serge) Saucke-Lacelle, of Montreal/Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, and Rhonda Saucke, of Clear Lake. Her grandchildren are Renay (Tom) Nestvedt, of Mason City, Matt (Jessy) Sage, of Chicago, Ill. and Erin, Amy and Eric Saucke-Lacelle, all of Montreal/Sherbrooke. Tyler and Justis Nesatvedt of Mason City are her great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by two sisters, Rosalie (Earl) Grindheim, of Richfield, Minn., and Florine (Ed) Gilbertson, of Minneapolis, Minn. and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents and most recently her husband, Ted, in March, 2004.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to her dear friends and family members who over the last several years have helped her, supported her and kept her and her family in their prayers.

Orlin Edward Buck, 75, of Davenport, Iowa, died at his home on April 24, 2004 with his family around him. He fought a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. Orlin's Celebration of Life service was held Tuesday, April 27 at First Christian Church in Davenport. Burial was in Oakdale Cemetery. Memorials may be made in Orlin's' honor to the First Christian Church of Davenport.
Orlin was born June 19, 1928 in Jesup, Iowa to Charles Arthur Buck and Nellie Border Buck. In 1948 her married
Mary Ellen Back. To this marriage were born two daughters and a son. In 1971 Orlin married
Daisy Lee Shinn, adding to his family three stepchildren.
His work career included employment with Rath Packing Company, Walnut Dairy, Anderson-Erickson Dairy, Investers Diversified, Ohio Life Insurance and Mutual of New York, all in Waterloo, Iowa. He also owned and operated Tony's Diner with his family, a restaurant he named after his son. He was an auxiliary police officer in Waterloo for several years. Orlin moved to Davenport, Iowa after accepting a position with Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Iowa, which he retired from in 1994 after 23 years of employment.
Orlin was a member of the First Christian Church of Davenport. He was also a member of many social and fraternal organization including Davenport Host Lions Club; Silver Creek Chapter Order of the Eastern Star; Snow Lodge AM and FM of Le Claire, Iowa; Kaaba Shrine; Mohassen Grotto; Davenport SR Bodies; Davenport York Rite; White Shrine; Order of the Amaranth of Iowa and Good Sam Camping Club. Orlin previously was a member of the Becker Chapter of the Eastern Star in Waterloo, Iowa.
He is survived by his wife, Daisy Lee Buck, Davenport; his daughters, Roberta Schlichting and her husband, Duane, Clear Lake, and Rebecca Ann Ripley, Clear Lake; one son, Anthony (Tony) Edward Buck, Davenport; two step-children, Sandy Shinn, Waverly, Iowa and Cyndi Reynolds, Waukee, Iowa; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Orlin is also survived by a large family including six siblings and numerous cousins, aunts and uncles.
Orlin and Daisy were chairpersons of the Lions Club Foreign Exchange program for the State of Iowa for several years and hosted 53 students in their home from all over the world. These young adults continue their relationships with the Bucks and are considered part of their extended family.
Orlin was preceded in death by his father and mother; his step-mother, Norma Maxine Buck; an infant brother; an infant sister, an adult brother and a stepson.
Glenn L. Werstein, 9581 170th St., Swaledale, Iowa, died Tuesday, May 4, 2004 at his home. A memorial service was held Friday, May 7, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Mark Young officiating. According to his wishes, his body was cremated. Memorials may be given to the Glenn L. Werstein Memorial Fund.
Glenn was born February 15, 1941, in Belmond, Iowa, the son of Anton and Emma (Robb) Werstein. He attended Ventura High School. Glenn served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Kitty Hawk. Following the service he worked construction in Clear Lake. Glenn married
Patricia Drake on Sept. 30, 1966 at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. He then worked for Secory's Plumbing and Heating from 1969 to 1974. Then he went to work at Lehigh Portland Cement Co. until retiring in 2003. Glenn and Pat moved from Clear Lake to their current home in 1975, which they built.
Glenn enjoyed camping, tinkering on machinery, building his house, boating on Clear Lake, grilling and his retirement. He loved taking his family on Sunday drives.
Glenn is survived by his wife, Pat Werstein, Swaledale; two children, Dan Werstein, Swaledale, and Angie Mirecki and her husband, Louis, Los Angeles, Calif.; two brothers, Donald Werstein and his wife, Joanne, Clear Lake, and Richard Werstein and his wife, Phyllis, Lawton, Okla. and several nieces and nephews.
Glenn is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Lyle.
Marna F. Whaley, 72, formerly of Clear Lake, died Friday, April 23, 2004 at Odyssey Inpatient Hospice in Tucson, Az. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 15, 2 p.m., at Capilla Del Sol Christian Church, 3130 W. Overton Rd., Tucson, Az. 85742. The Rev. Ed Nelson will be officiating. Memorials may be given to the Marna Whaley Desert Garden Memorial Fund at the above address.
Marna was born Aug. 6, 1931 in Fargo, N.D. She attended Mason City Schools. After graduation she attended Phillips University in Enid, Okla. She married
James N. Whaley on Jan. 31, 1954. Together, they lived in Iowa, California and Arizona. James passed away in 1971. Marna returned to Clear Lake, where she resided until 1985. Marna moved to Tucson and worked for Northwest Hospital until she retired in 1999.
Marna enjoyed attending church and being with her family and friends. She loved animals, including her cat; and especially enjoyed watching the local wildlife near her desert home.
Marna is survived by a daughter, Jana Furton, of Tucson; two sons, Mark Whaley and his wife, Nancy, of Clear Lake and Gary Whaley of Laguna Niguel, Calif.; one sister, Levon Garrison of Terre Haute, Ind. and two grandchildren, Ryan and Dane Whaley of Clear Lake. She is also survived by a niece, Tamara Bruns, of California; a nephew, Paul Bruns II and Bobbi Bruns, both of Clear Lake.
Marna was proceeded in death by her parents, Neil and Lila Garrison; her husband, James Whaley and one sister, Arleen Randall.
Cheryl Kay (Trimble) Rettig, 56, of 1200 10th Ave. N., Clear Lake, Iowa died May 5, 2004 at her home. Services were held Monday, May 10, at the First Congregational Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Thomas Healey officiating. Cremation followed the service and inurnment will be held at a later date in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa. Family suggests memorials to the Cheryl Kay Rettig Memorial Fund.
Cheryl was born June 12, 1947 in Mason City, the daughter of Harold and Elizabeth (Burgener) Trimble. She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1965. She then continued her education at University of Northern Iowa and La'James College of Hairstyling and Cosmetology. Cheryl owned and operated her own business in Minnesota for many years.
Cheryl married
Jim Rettig in Arizona where her son, Josh, was born. She later moved to Clear Lake to be closer to her family.
Left to cherish her memory is her son, Josh Rettig, Clear Lake; her father, Harold Trimble, Mason City; mother, Elizabeth Trimble, Clear Lake; three sisters, Nina Hepperly, Mason City, Teresa Thompson, Tempe, Az. and Linda Oletzke and her husband, Michael, Fairmont, Minn.; two brothers, David Trimble and his wife, Cindy, Layton, Utah and Daniel Trimble and his wife, Patti, Ft. Genevieve E. Grandon, 98, 113 East Walnut, Manly, Iowa, formerly of Clear Lake, died Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at her home. A funeral service was held Saturday, May 15, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Clear Lake, with Msgr. Robert Hogan officiating. Interment was at the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake. Memorials may be given to the Genevieve Grandon Memorial Fund.
Genevieve was born March 6, 1906 in Barnsville, Minn., the daughter of Hugo and Nona (Fitzgerald) Fex. She attended and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Pocahantas, Iowa. Genevieve married
Charles Grandon on Jan. 31, 1928 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Laurens, Iowa. They were the first couple to be married
in that parish. They lived in Laurens, until moving to Clear Lake in July 1946.
Due to her health, Genevieve moved to Manly to live with her granddaughter, Jill. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Clear Lake.
Genevieve is survived by her two sons, Charles Romaine "Granny" Grandon, Manly, and Michael Grandon and his wife, Mary, Clear Lake; six grandchildren, Christopher "Kit" Grandon, Manly, Jill Houston, Manly, Brenda Beernink and her husband, Mark, Rock Valley, Iowa, Valerie Glaser and her significant other, David Warhol, Prior Lake, Minn., Lynae Hershey and her husband, Dan, Prior Lake, and Mike Glaser and his wife, Allyson, West Des Moines, Iowa; 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Genevieve was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles, May 1992; two sisters, Martha Lichter and Alice Harlan; three brothers, Louis, Hugo and Joseph Fex.

Birdeva Edgar, 106, of Clear Lake, died Wednesday, May 12, 2004 at the Good Shepherd Care Center, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services will be Thursday, May 20, 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. 4th St.,Clear Lake, with the Rev. Derik Yarian and Dick Scott, Lay Assistant at Zion Lutheran Church, officiating. Graveside services will be Thursday 3 p.m. at the Riverside Cemetery, Marshalltown, Iowa. Family suggests memorials to Hospice of North Iowa.
Birdeva was born Sept. 2, 1897 in Pocahontas County, Iowa on her grandparents farm (John and Sarah Brown) the daughter of Edward Phillip and Lillian May (Brown) Trenary.
She attended Buena Vista Academy, Morningside College, Highland Park College and graduated from St. Thomas Hospital School of Nursing in Marshalltown in 1922.
While working as an R.N. at the Veterans Hospital in Battle Creek, Mich., she met her husband to be, Harold Edgar. They were married
Oct.6, 1925 in Crown Point, Ind.
She has lived in Clear Lake from 1929 until April of 2000, when she moved to the Good Shepherd Care Center, Mason City, Iowa.
In December of 2001, at the age of 104, she was inducted into the D.A.R. as a descendant of John Cook, who served in the Revolutionary War. In addition, she is a descendant of George Soule, who came to Plymouth, Mass. in 1620 on the Mayflower.
She is survived by three sons, Wallace (Jean) Edgar of Scottsdale, Az., Cleworth (Marleah) Edgar of Green Valley, Az. and Wesley (Myrna) Edgar of Phoenix, Az.; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Edgar, of Clear Lake; 11 grandchildren, Mark (Cathy) Edgar of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., Jody (Mike) Rodack of Tucson, Az., Kathy (Mike) Da Walt of Shawano, Wis., Debbie (Randy) Bryan of Clear Lake, Lauri (Leroy) Thorson, of Little Canada, Minn., Nancy Edgar of Flagstaff, Az., Brian (Jennifer) Edgar of Chanhassen, Minn., Steven (Laurel) Edgar, of Phoenix, Az., Vicki ( Don) Weeks, of Newbury Park, Calif., Kim (Tim) Peelen, of Gilbert, Az. and Michael (Linda) Edgar, of Peoria, Az. In addition, she is survived by 20 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; son, Darrell Edgar; grandson, Brad Edgar; brother, Lyle Trenary and sister, Gladys Keables.
By living in three different centuries, Birdeva has watched the automobile, the radio, television, and the computer change the everyday lives of everyone.

Lillian L. Schlei, 81, of Garner, Iowa died Wednesday, May 26, 2004 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
Her funeral was held Saturday, May 29, at the Immanuel Reform United Church of Christ in Klemme, Iowa with the Rev. Donna Buckman officiating. Music was provided by organist, Lynette Nuehring who accompanied soloist, Warren Torkelson and congregational hymns. Ushers were Dixie Treinen and Beth Roths. Honorary bearers were Tracy Marshall, Anna Skogerboe, Amy Skogerboe and Taylor Farris. Pall bearers were Craig Meints, Cody Farris, Frank Marshall, Dave Boeset, Bill Grange and Bob Hanson. Burial was in Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme. Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner was in charge of arrangements.
Lillian Louise Schlei, the daughter of Axel and Katherine (Petersen) Juhl, was born July 17, 1922 on a farm near Thornton, Iowa. She was raised on several farms in the Thornton, Ventura and Clear Lake area and graduated from Ventura High School in 1940. On April 28, 1943 she was united in marriage to Dale Schlei at the Lutheran parsonage in Clear Lake. They lived and farmed southwest of Klemme all of their married
life. Lillian spent much of her time with her husband, showing their Belgian horses. She had lived at Prairie View Apartments in Garner for the past 18 years. She enjoyed playing cards, puzzle books and spending time with her family and friends. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren.
She was a member of Immanuel Reform United Church of Christ in Klemme.
Lillian is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Farris and husband, Dan, of Garner; grandchildren, Tracy Marshall and husband, Frank, of Klemme, Craig Meints and wife, Linda, of Klemme and Cody Farris of Garner; great-granddaughter, Taylor Farris; great grandbaby, Marshall, due in September, 2004; step-granddaughters, Anna and Amy Skogerboe of Klemme; sister, Alice Thompson, of University City, Wash.; sisters-in-law, Irene Juhl of Harrison, Ark., Ruth Juhl of Mason City and Ruth Juhl of Clear Lake; brother-in-law, Elwood Pilz of Clear Lake; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale, in 1975; her parents; sisters, Elnora, Laura and Elsie "Julie"; brothers, Albert, Elmer, Leonard and Arthur; and three infant siblings.
