Leroy C. Hollatz, 85, of Garner, Iowa, died Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
His funeral was held Friday, June 18, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garner with the Rev. Carl Hedberg officiating. Music was provided by organist, Beverly Cataldo who accompanied soloist, Doug Hayes, and congregational hymns. Ushers were Alvin "Pete" Hansen and Earl Jaspersen. Honorary bearers were the Garner Lions Club. Pall bearers were Dean Hollatz, Tom Boehnke, Robert Boehnke, Philip Boehnke, Mark Boehnke, Dale Plath and David Pueggel. Burial was in St. John Lutheran Cemetery, east of Garner. Cataldo Funeral Home, Garner, was in charge of arrangements.
LeRoy Carl Hollatz, the son of Carl Fredrick and Emma Elizabeth (Jante) Hollatz, was born Aug. 20, 1918 on a farm near Garner. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church, east of Garner. He attended St. John Parochial School. On June 9, 1940 he married
Agnes Pueggel at St. John Lutheran Church. They farmed northeast of Garner. On March 13, 1964 Agnes passed away. On Feb. 5, 1966 he married
Ann Severson at St. John Lutheran Church. In 1970 they moved into Clear Lake. Ann passed away in 1988. In 1997 he moved to Prairie View Apartments in Garner. Besides farming, LeRoy was a hail adjuster and insurance agent. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, farming and golfing.
He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, where he had served as a deacon, Sunday school superintendent, chairman of the congregation, trustee, was on the building committee and was instrumental in setting up the perpetual care fund for St. John Cemetery. He was a member of the Garner Lions Club, was a Hospice Volunteer and was president of the Garner Shipping Association in the 1960's.
He is survived by his two sons, Gary (Sharon) Hollatz of Garner and Stephen (Sophia) Hollatz of Naperville, Ill.; five grandchildren, Jon, Brian and Emily Hollatz and her fiancé, Adam Boge, and Timothy and Allison Hollatz; a step-son, Vern (Pat) Severson of Clear Lake; a step-daughter, Sandra (Roger) Aceto of Des Moines, Iowa; a sister, Laura Boehnke of Ventura; two sisters-in-law, Ann Radloff and Dorothy Hollatz, both of Garner; a brother-in-law, Arnold (Marlys) Pueggel of Clear Lake; and many nieces and nephews.
LeRoy was preceded in death by his wives, Agnes and Ann; his parents; sisters, Verna Rankin and Lillian Boehnke; and brothers-in-law, Earl Boehnke, Norman Rankin and Arthur Boehnke.
David M. Duclos, 46, of Clear Lake, died Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa. A memorial service was held Friday, June 25, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Edward Bard officiating. Memorials may be made in memory of David M. Duclos.
David was born on Sept. 25, 1957, the son of Lewis and Maxine (Ringgenberg) Duclos. He attended Ventura Schools. David married
Darlene Riis on Feb. 25, 1983. David lived in the Clear Lake/Ventura area all his life and was an avid fisherman. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandson, Jorden.
David is survived by his wife, Darlene, of Clear Lake; daughter, Sara and grandson, Jorden, of Clear Lake; daughter, Rachel, Clear Lake; mother, Maxine Duclos, Clear Lake; sisters, Debbie Sawtelle, Rockford, Ill., Diane Duclos, Clear Lake, Doreen Pasieka, Clear Lake; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Lewis and his maternal and paternal grandparents.
Charles Brian "Chuck" Galkin, 38, of 1420 S. Hampshire, Mason City, died Sunday, June 20, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 25, at First United Methodist Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Michael O. Stewart, officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, at a later date.
Memorials may be given to the Charles B. Galkin memorial fund.
Charles Brian Galkin was born Feb. 7, 1966 at Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Charles Fredrick and Charlotte Marie (O'Banion) Galkin. He was united in marriage to Carrie Ann Monahan, Aug. 22, 1998 at Clear Lake.
Chuck attended Mason City schools and was a 1984 graduate of Mason City High School. He was looking forward to attending his 20-year class reunion this August.
Beginning at the age of 13, Chuck cooked at various area restaurants. He worked at Tonka Coolers, Mason City for several years. He later returned to school and became an engineer for the IC & E Railroad.
Chuck's life was centered on his family, especially his children. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, fishing, stock car races, hunting and all sports - especially the Minnesota Vikings and Iowa Hawkeyes. Chuck's final act was to give the gift of life through organ and tissue donation
He is survived by his wife, Carrie (Monahan) Galkin, Mason City; four children, Jessica Christine Vega Galkin, Raymore, Mo., Jennifer Lynn Galkin, Mason City, Bailee Ann Galkin, Mason City, Brandon Charles Galkin, Mason City; his parents, Charles F. and Charlotte M. Galkin, Mason City; two sisters, Dawn Busick, Mason City; Brenda Reich and her husband, Steve, Quasqueton; aunts and uncle, Beverly Tritch and her husband, Mearle Tritch, Joice; Marie Watermiller, Garner, Iowa, Sherri Galkin Rossiter, Lake Mills; father and mother in-law, Troy, Sr. and Sandee Monahan, Clear Lake; brothers and sisters in-law, Tonya Ristau and her husband, Troy, Chaska, Minn., Troy Monahan Jr. and his wife, Amy, Mason City, Greg Monahan, Clear Lake; many nieces and nephews; a great-niece and great-nephew and a host of very good friends.
His grandparents, Fred and Inga Galkin and Charles O'Banion and Marlene O'Banion Wallace, preceded him in death.

Mena A. Reams, 93, of 405 27th Ave. S, Clear Lake, formerly of Rudd, Iowa, died Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were Friday, June 25, at Rock Creek Lutheran Church, rural Osage, Iowa with the Rev. R. Dawson Tornes officiating. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery, Rudd. Family suggests memorials to Rock Creek Lutheran Church or Hospice of North Iowa.
Mena was born June 12, 1911 in Meroa, Iowa rural Mitchell County, the daughter of John and Clara Olava (Winnor) Staff. She graduated from Osage High School.
She worked for many years at Fox River Mills while also taking care of her parents. Mena married
Henry "Hank" Reams, April 6, 1969 at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church. They lived in Rudd. She moved to Clear Lake in 2003.
She was well known for kindness and compassion for other people. Mena enjoyed gardening, raising flowers, canning, cooking and most of all, her daily excursions with Willie P.
She was a member of Rock Creek Lutheran Church and the ladies' circle.
Mena is survived by her brother, Jean Staff and his wife, Millie, Grafton, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Hildegard Staff, Osage, and Bethel Durby, Lake Mills, Iowa; step-son, Terry Reams and his wife, Jackie, Osage; five grandchildren, Terry Reams Jr., Jason Reams, Joseph Reams, Melissa Mayer and Tanya Kirschbaum; nine great-grandchildren; special friend, Wilma LaCoste, Rudd, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Hank; three brothers, Olaf, Hans and Lloyd Staff; step-daughter, Mary Coburn and step-son, Jim Reams.

LaVonne L. Wass, of the Denver Sunset Home in Denver, Iowa, and formerly of Clear Lake, died on Sunday, June 27, 2004, of natural causes.
Funeral services will be held at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 30. Burial will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City. Visitation will be held for two hours before the service at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake on Wednesday. Memorials may be directed to the family.
LaVonne was born on April 20, 1925, in Britt, Iowa, the daughter of Harry H. and Elsie (Butts) Weiland. LaVonne attended the Clear Lake School System and graduated from the Clear Lake High School in 1942. Following her schooling, she went to work as a secretary for the Mason City Tent and Awning. On Sept. 28, 1947, she was united in marriage to Donald R. Wass at the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake. The couple made their home in Mason City, Iowa. In 1960, the couple moved to Clear Lake, and on June 3, 1965, Don died. LaVonne continued to make her home in Clear Lake, and began working full time as a secretary for the Clear Lake Community School System. LaVonne later worked as a secretary for the City of Clear Lake, and also for the Opportunity Village in Clear Lake. She retired in February of 1989, and in 1992, LaVonne moved to Denver, Iowa.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, where she was also a member of a church circle. She was also a member of the WA-TAN-YE group.
LaVonne is survived by her three children and their spouses, Roger C. and Sumrit Wass, Goldsboro, N.C., Gerald A. and Deb Wass, Denver, Iowa, and Julie L. and Paul Roberts of rural Iowa City, Iowa; five grandchildren, Julienne (Aaron) Yager of Misawa, Japan, Allyson (David) Ovitt of Buxton, N.C., Jared Wass, Ames, Iowa, Ian (Jessica) Wass, Denver, Iowa, and Jamin Wass, Denver, Iowa; two great-grandchildren, Michael Ovitt and Jahlen Yager; and one sister, Blanche, and her husband, Kenneth Lincicum, Clear Lake, and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald; and two brothers, Norman and Cletus Weiland.
Eugene F. Burris, 91, of 705 3rd Ave N, Clear Lake, died Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, July 8, at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. 4th St., Clear Lake with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church.
Gene was born Aug. 22, 1912, the son of Marshall and Mary (Wass) Burris, at Mason City. After graduation from Mason City High School in 1933, he worked as a salesman in the Davenport, Iowa area. He met Dorothy Woehlk during that time and they were married
March 27, 1937 at the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa. Eventually they settled in Clear Lake. Gene spent four years helping build the Alcan Highway in Canada. He later worked for Williams Pipeline Company and retired in 1977 after 32 years of employment.
Gene was a jack-of-all-trades and a skilled carpenter with the ability to build or fix almost anything. He finished construction on the family home in 1950, where he remained active until his death. He also built a much-enjoyed cabin in Colorado and a number of toys and playthings for his children and grandchildren. For many years he won the outdoor lighting contest and continued his tradition of Christmas lighting through the past holiday season. Gene was an avid fisherman, boater, and outdoor enthusiast with a fondness for animals. He was a long time member of Zion Lutheran Church.
Gene is survived by three children, Ron (Brenda) Burris of Horse Shoe, N.C., Dennis (Barbara) Burris of Dexter, Or.; and Wendy (Will) Keen of Mason City; 13 grandchildren, Jon, Jeff, Roddy and Tom Burris, Heather Preston, Briceanne Bailey, Nancy Frame, Brent Bailey, Johannah Keil, Korenza Burris, Jennifer, Aimee and Nathan Keen and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; brother, Merlin Burris and sister, Evelyn Wakefield.

Judith Anita Hall, 64, of 101 2nd St, Fertile, Iowa, died Monday, June 28, 2004, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit Mason City, Iowa. Funeral services were held Thursday, July 1, at the Church of Christ, Fertile Iowa with the Rev. Curt Gallmeyer officiating. Interment was at the Grant Township Cemetery, Fertile. The family suggests memorials to the Church Of Christ, Fertile.
Judie was born March 15, 1940, the daughter of James and Esther (Furness) Haugen at Mason City. Judie graduated from Fertile High School in 1959, and married
Eugene Hall August 23, 1959. Judie worked for Winnebago Industries for several years then worked for Opportunity Village as a job coach for 20 years, retiring in 2000. She enjoyed crafts, attending children and grandchildren's events, and spending time with her grandchildren. She was very committed to her family and the Church of Christ where she was an active member for most of her life. She loved and trusted the Lord and is now in his loving arms.
Judie is survived by her husband, Eugene Hall of Fertile; four children, Tim (Patty) Hall of Mason City, Tracy (Tammy) Hall of Fertile, Tami (Dan) Horner of Clear Lake, and Troy (Trish) Hall of Forest City; brother, Larry (Dixie) Haugen of Clear Lake; sister, Janan Haugen of West Point, Iowa; brothers-in-law, Brian (Coralene) Hall of Clear Lake, and Gary (Cheryl) Hall of Lincoln, Ill.; grandchildren Christopher, Casey, Stephen and Andrew Hall, Samantha, Brady, Austin, and Hailey Horner, Bethany, Nicholas and Logan Hall.
Her parents and in-laws, Glea and Mavis Hall, preceded her in death.

Charles "Chuck" Daniel Davis, of 901 South 3rd Street, Clear Lake, died Thursday, July 1, 2004 at the Heritage Care Center, Mason City.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 3, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with Lay Assistant Dick Scott officiating. Burial was in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Charles "Chuck" Daniel Davis was born Sept. 18, 1913 the son of George and Clarice (Gifford) Davis, in Fayette, Iowa. He and his parents moved to Clear Lake in 1919, where he attended Clear Lake School system. He was united in marriage to Catherine (Porter) Davis on March 3, 1935 in the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa.
Chuck and Clair worked together running vending machines all over North Iowa. He worked at the Clear Lake Bakery as the head of maintenance and mechanic for 35 years, later retiring in 1978.
He enjoyed gardening, his cats, tinkering with things - even if not broken, and going to coffee with Scott. His greatest love was spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake.
Chuck is survived by his wife, Catherine Davis, of Clear Lake; four children, Sandra Cesar, of Clear Lake, Jill Deuel and her husband, Rick, of San Antonio, Texas, Joni Anderson, of Kingman, Az., Scott Davis and his fiancé, Rene Herker, of Forest City, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Davis, Des Moines, Iowa; eight grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Michael Davis; two infant great- grandchildren; one sister, Lenore George, and two brothers, Robert and Clair Davis.
Herman T. "Andy" Anderson, 86, of 1109 5th Ave. South, Clear Lake, died Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City, Iowa. He requested there be no memorial service. His cremated remains will make the journey to his final resting place near the Colorado Rocky Mountains that he loved so much.
Herman was born Sept. 23, 1917, in Mason City, the son of Herman William and Ida (Nealander) Anderson. He received his education from Mason City Schools and later Hamilton Business College in Mason City.
Andy was a bookkeeper in the automobile industry most of his life. He enjoyed everything revolving around automobiles including driving them from coast to coast, reading endlessly about them and purchasing quite a few throughout his lifetime. After retirement, he could be found relaxing in one of his cars under many a shady tree around the Clear Lake and Mason City area. His enthusiasm and love of automobiles persevered well beyond his driving days by sharing his son's enjoyment of the same hobby.
He is survived by his son, Wayne and his wife, Jan, Clear Lake; his brother, O.C. Anderson, Jacksonville, Fla.; special friends, Curt Anderson, of Golden, Colorado, and Willie Ebert, of Mason City; his three very special kitties, and several nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all.
He is preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, and special lifelong friend, Carlin Hahn.

Donovan K. Havnen, 77, of Mason City, Iowa, formerly of Clear Lake, died Saturday, July 3, 2004 at Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City. Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 6, at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Derik Yarian officiating. Burial was at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, where Military honors were conducted by the Clear Lake V.F.W. Post #4868.

Donovan Kaywood, the son of Morgan and Opal (Kinden) Havnen, was born Sept. 22, 1926 in Thompson, Iowa. He received his education from Mason City High School, graduating in 1944. He was united in marriage to Shirley Tagesen on May 11, 1945 in Cheyenne, Wyo. The couple made their home in Mason City. Don enlisted in the Army Air Forces in January 1946, where he held the rank of PFC. He was honorably discharged in December 1946. He reenlisted in the United States Air Force in October 1950 and was honorably discharged in October 1951. During his time in the military, he served in WWII and the Korean War. He came back to the Mason City area where he worked as a contractor with his father-in-law for many years. Later he went to work for Decker's, where he worked until injuries from a car accident forced an early retirement in 1979. After his accident, the couple moved to Clear Lake, and then back to Mason City. In 1986 Don received his pilots license. Don and Shirley moved into Good Shepherd Health Center in 2001.
Don enjoyed spending time with his family, as well as visiting the cabin of his sister and brother-in-law, Mardelle and Dick, in Minnesota, where he loved to fish, camp, and fly airplanes. He also enjoyed hunting and was an avid hockey fan.
Don was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Clear Lake.
Don is survived by his children, Mary Lin Kolb and her husband, Doug, Clear Lake, James Havnen and his wife, Pam, Ankeny, Iowa, Donovan Havnen and his wife, Jennifer, Andover, Ks., Matthew Havnen, Nora Springs, Iowa, Kathy Banks and her husband, Don, Clear Lake, and Mark Havnen and his wife, Connie, Estero, Fla. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one stepbrother, Paul Havnen and his wife, Jeanne, of Clive, Iowa and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Shirley, on Aug. 11, 2003; daughter-in-law, Wendy Havnen; sister, Mardelle Holt, and brother, John Havnen.
