Dick A. Marchand, 78, of 911 South Shore Drive, Clear Lake, died Sunday April 10, 2005 at Fillmore County Hospital, Geneva, Neb. Funeral Mass was held Thursday, April 14, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Clear Lake, with Msgr. Robert Hogan officiating. Interment was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa.
Memorials may be given to the Klemme United Methodist Church, St. Patrick's Catholic Church or Newman High School in his name.
Dick A. Marchand was born to Louis and Florence (Sheldon) Marchand August 17, 1926 in Milford, Iowa. He had two older sisters, Leona (Frenchie) and Marge and one younger sister, Donna (Donna Belle). He was named after his brother, Richard, who died before he was born.
He attended Milford Public School System and graduated from St. Joseph's Catholic School in Milford. Dick worked at Decker's as a "boner" for 41 years and this is where he met LaVon Larick. They were married
on Feb. 9, 1944. They lived in Mason City until approximately 1959 where they attended St. Joseph Parish and raised four children: Gary, Dixie, Vicki and David.
In 1997, he married
Ruth Pringnitz from Kanawha, Iowa and shared his life with her until his death. He loved playing cards, singing, dancing, fishing and boating, his farm, his lake home, animals, new cars, Snickers candy bars, lemon pie and his two families.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Patrick's Catholic Church and he was a steward of the union at Deckers.
Dick is survived by his wife, Ruth Marchand, of Clear Lake; children, Gary (Desirei) Marchand, of Des Moines, Iowa, Dixie (Mike) Kavars, of Clear Lake, Vicki Marchand, of Mason City, David (Susan) Marchand, of Hinesville, Ga.; step-children; Deborah (Brad) Pringnitz-Hansen, of Maine, Doyce (Margaret) Pringnitz, of Kanawha; sisters, Marge Petersen, of Mason City, Donna Nelson, of Fort Dodge, Iowa; grandchildren, Jackie (Bob) Cummings, Mindy Tingley, Todd Marchand, Bridgette Marchand, Chad (Michelle) Kavars, Kemberlyn (Scott) Anderson, Nate Kavars, Michelle (Steve) Smith, Tami (Jason) Kisner, Ami (Gene) Collins, Cori (Karie) Ewen, Dawn Marchand, Matthew (Tabatha) Marchand; step-grandchildren, Jeremy, Jody, Justin, and Julie Pringnitz, 28 great- grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephew, and friends.
Dick is preceded in death by his parents; wife, LaVon Marchand; sister, Leona Roth; brother, Richard Marchand and grandson, Johnnie Kavars.
Anna Conners, age 94, most recently a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center, Belmond, Iowa, formerly a longtime resident of Klemme, Iowa died Tuesday, April 12, 2005 at the Belmond Health Care Center.
Funeral services were held Friday, April 15, at the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ, Klemme. The Rev. Donna Buckman officiated. Burial was in the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme.
Anna Trampel was born July 14, 1910 to Peter and Jennie (Schaa) Trampel of Kamrar, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Arthur Conners on Dec. 4, 1943 at the Immanuel Reformed Church, Klemme. Following their marriage they made their home in the Klemme area.
For many years Anna had done housekeeping for residents throughout the area including Britt, Garner, and Clear Lake. She was known for her hardworking and meticulous attention to her work.
Left to cherish the memory are her brother and sister-in-law, Clarence and his wife, Ruth, Trampel of Klemme; sister-in-law, Eula Trampel of Belmond, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Anna was preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother, Melbourne; brothers, John and Harmon Trampel; sister, Wemkie Cavitt; and her husband, Arthur Conners.
Andrews Funeral Home, Klemme, was in charge of arrangements.
John T. Eness, 83, of Garner, Iowa died Monday, April 11, 2005 at the Heritage Care Center, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 16, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garner with the Rev. Henry Friedrich officiating. Music was provided by organist Barb Mrosko who accompanied soloist Beverly Cataldo and congregational hymns. Usher was Gary Mrosko. Pall bearers were Lynn Smith, Bill Short, La Vern Vaage, Larry Vaage, Sylvan Meling and Brad Snodgrass. Burial was in Concord Township Cemetery, Garner with military rites by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit. Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be directed to St. Paul Lutheran Church or Hospice of North Iowa.
John Thomas Eness, the son of Thomas and Bertha (Chentland) Eness, was born May 8, 1921 on a farm near Crystal Lake, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He graduated from Garner High School in 1940 and then began working in the plumbing, heating and air conditioning trade. He also worked as a movie projectionist for several years at the Avery Theater in Garner. John served his country in the U.S. Army during WW II as a medical technician. He was stationed in England for two and one-half years in the 303rd U.S. Hospital north of London. Following his honorable discharge he returned to Garner and continued working in the plumbing, heating and air conditioning trade for over 50 years at C.J. Schneider's Hardware and Grocery and Smith's Hardware Heating and Plumbing. One of his biggest joys was helping his customers seven days a week, providing emergency service even on holidays and in all types of weather. As he got older, so did his customers, and into his 80's he enjoyed the challenges of serving his friends. His hobbies included gardening with a special interest in day lilies. When his mother died he took over her African violets, checking them daily and expanding the indoor garden. Other interests included flying, fishing and woodworking.
He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where he serviced the heating system, St. Paul Men's Club and the Gifford Olson American Legion Post No. 256 in Garner.
John is survived by his sister, Bernice Eness, of Garner; three brothers, Orville (Karen) Eness of Park Ridge, Ill., Vergil (Joan) Eness of Clear Lake and Arlyn (Carolyn) Eness of Iowa Falls, Iowa; an aunt, Della Vaage, of Forest City, Iowa; 12 nieces and nephews; many cousins and great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Judith (Roscoe) McKinney.
Arnold W. Terpstra, 76, of Clear Lake and formerly of Lynnville, Iowa died Friday, April 8, 2005, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn.
Funeral services for Mr. Terpstra were held Tuesday, April 12, at the Lynnville Friends Church. Burial was in Woodland Cemetery in Lynnville. Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell, Iowa handled arrangements.

The son of Arie and Rena Visser Terpstra, he was born Nov. 25, 1928, on a farm north of Lynnville. He attended Black Oak Country School and was a 1946 graduate of Lynnville High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in post war Japan. He was married
to Ruth Harris on July 15, 1950, in Mason City, Iowa and the couple made their home in Lynnville. He was a partner with his brother, Albert, of the Lynnville Seed Company from 1949 until his retirement in 1983. He and his wife later moved to Clear Lake in the mid-1980's.
Arnold was an active member of the Lynnville Friends Church, a charter member and past president of the Lynnville Lions Club, and past president and member of several organizations including Lynnville-Sully School District, Lynnville Telephone Company, Iowa Seed Dealers Association, Western Seed Dealers Association, and Grinnell General Hospital. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, skiing, and golfing.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth, of Clear Lake; four sons, Douglas, of Eau Claire, Wis., Mark, of Perry, Iowa, Steven, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Neal, of Naperville, Ill.; one brother, Albert Terpstra, of Lynnville; one sister, Alice LaRossa of Wichita, Kan.; six grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, George and John Terpstra; and two sisters, Elizabeth Van Rees and Alma Terpstra.
Wilma M. Herker passed away at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn. on April 15, 2005. The family invites all friends and family to a visitation of remembrance and celebration on Wed., April 20, from 4:30 until 8 p.m. at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake. A private family interment service will take place at later date at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa. The family requests that memorials be directed to Harmony Ranch.
Wilma was born in Ottumwa, Iowa, the daughter of M. Arlington and Cecil (Morehouse) King. She was united in marriage to Amil Herker, Jr. in Des Moines, Iowa. She and Amil moved to Clear Lake in 1954 and moved from Clear Lake to Mason City in 2000.
Wilma was the office manager and bookkeeper for the Clear Lake Sanitary District for 30 and a one-half years, retiring in February of 1991. She enjoyed serving as the charter secretary for the Iowa Water Pollution Control Association Auxiliary and was the past president of that organization as well. She also served as the newsletter editor for the Iowa Water Pollution Control Association for several years.
Volunteer work was a vital part of Wilma's life. She served as a Girl Scout leader, a volunteer disc jockey at KCMR Radio, was a Red Cross Gray Lady, volunteered with the American Cancer Society, the Discovery Shop, and she was a volunteer with the Mercy Medical Center Auxiliary. Following retirement she and Amil enjoyed taking several cruises.
Wilma is survived by her husband, Amil, of Mason City; her son, Donald, and his wife, Sumae, of Clear Lake; daughter, Beth Ann, and her husband, Mark Schumacher of Clear Lake; and son, Martin, and his wife, Anita, of Traer, Iowa. She is also survived by grandchildren Rene, Joseph, Abigail, Ashley, Stephan and Jennifer and great-granddaughters Jessica, Megan, Sabrina, and Avery.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers and one sister.
Laura O. Boehnke, 91, of Ventura died Friday, April 15, 2005 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 18, at St. John Lutheran Church east of Garner, Iowa with the Rev. Carl Hedberg officiating. Music was provided by organist, Paul Boehnke, who accompanied vocal soloist, Ruth Ann Taylor and congregational hymns. Special music was provided by cellist, Julie Elhard and violinist, Mary Giese. Ushers were Scott Ollenburg and Paul Boehnke. Pallbearers were Dale Plath, Jon Hollatz, Robert Boehnke, Philip Boehnke, Mark Boehnke, Dale Boehnke, Carl Chiko and Steve Hollatz. Burial was in the church cemetery. Cataldo Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Laura Olga Boehnke, the daughter of Carl and Emma (Jante) Hollatz, was born Aug. 20, 1913 on a farm north of Garner. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church. She attended St. John Parochial School and graduated from Garner High School in 1931. Laura was employed at the bank in Ventura for 13 years, Mercy Hospital in Mason City for five years and the Hancock County Treasurer's Office in Garner for seven years. On Jan. 27, 1956 she was married
to Earl Boehnke at St. Luke Lutheran Church in St. Louis Park, Minn. They farmed with Earl's brother, Lawrence, northeast of Garner and later with their son, Tom, until retiring from active farming in 1983. In 1979, they moved into Ventura. Laura moved to Apple Valley Assisted Living in Clear Lake in February of 2005. She enjoyed her family, friends, quilting, gardening, card playing, cooking, sewing, reading, and her church.
She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. She also was a member of LWML, AAL, Birthday Club and belonged to several bridge clubs.
Laura is survived by her son, Thomas (Janet) Boehnke of Ventura; four grandchildren, Kara Joy, Shanna Sue, Brittany Lou and Kevin Thomas Boehnke; a sister-in-law, Edna Boehnke of Edina, Minn. and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl; parents; two sisters, Verna Rankin and Lillian Boehnke; a brother, LeRoy Hollatz; brothers-in-law, Norman Rankin and Art Boehnke; and sisters-in-law, Agnes Hollatz and Ann Hollatz.
"C.J." Shreck, 86, died of pneumonia Thursday, April 14, 2005 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines, Iowa. Funeral services were held Sunday, April 17, at McLaren's Funeral Chapel at Resthaven Cemetery, West Des Moines, Iowa. A private burial service was held Monday at Resthaven Cemetery.
C.J. grew up in New Market, Iowa the youngest of five children born to Frank and Jennie Shreck. He was the batting star of the baseball team and an avid clarinetist. He was a good student and as a teenager in the depression, spent three winters living alone in an apartment in Des Moines while working as a page in the state legislature. He attended the University of Iowa and graduated from its College of Commerce in 1941. He was a veteran of the Army Air Corps, enlisting after Pearl Harbor and served as a bomber flight instructor. After the war he returned to Des Moines to work successively at Wolf and Co., Weitz Construction Co., Western Tool and Stamping Co. and finally Dental-Eze, Inc. He was a long-time investor in Iowa farmland and this enabled him to retire early with a vacation home in Clear Lake and a winter home in Naples, Fla.
C.J. married
his New Market sweetheart, Ruth Shields, on Feb. 1, 1941 in Clarinda, Iowa. Two children, Bobby and Becky, grew up in the family home on Colonial Circle in West Des Moines.
He is survived by his son, Robert (Cherie Vinz) of Des Moines, and their children, Benjamin (Mara Krongard) of Washington, D.C., Heidi. of Salt Lake City, Utah, and John of Houston, Texas; and his daughter, Rebecca, and her children, Sothavy, Sothea, Choey and Nani, all of Fairfield, Iowa and Sheyla, of Iowa City.
C.J. was preceded in death by his wife, Ruthie; two brothers, Benjamin "Brodie" and Lyle; and two sisters, Susan Johnston and Marie Fesenmeyer.

James Orville Palmer, 78, of Mason City, Iowa died Monday, April 18, 2005 at the Mercy Medical Center North Iowa, Mason City. Services were held Thursday, April 21, at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, Mason City, with the Rev. Kenneth Gehling officiating. Interment was in Elmwood Cemetery, Mason City, with military honors by Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. Family suggests memorials to James O. Palmer Memorial Fund.
Jim was born March 19, 1927 in Orthel Township, rural Hancock County, Iowa the son of Paul M. and Mildred L. (Clark) Palmer. He married
Anna Gram in 1943. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served during WWII as a carpenters mate third class.
Following the service he moved back to Iowa and worked for the Clear Lake Bakery, Omar Wonder Company and was then a foreman for Nash Finch Company in Cedar Rapids and Waterloo, Iowa.
He married
Catherine "Katie" Cooksley April 2, 1966 in SanBernadino, Calif. They moved to the Mason City area where he drove semi for various companies, until his retirment in 1989.
Jim enjoyed fishing, camping, watching sports, playing cards and especially spending time with his family and grandchildren.
He was a member of Mason City V.F.W. Post 733, Muddy Pond CB Club and River City Tri Club where his handle was known as Double D.
Jim is survived by his wife, Katie Palmer, Mason City; four children, Lester Palmer and his wife, Judy, Cedar Falls, Iowa, Star Anders and her husband, Neal, East Moline, Ill., Michael Palmer, Mason City, and Jeffrey Palmer and his wife, Jean, Waterloo; two brothers, Willard Palmer and his wife, Doris, Holland, Iowa, Paul Palmer Jr. and his wife, Loretta, Webb City, Mo.; four sisters, Ruth Nichols and her husband, Gordon, Clear Lake, Pauline Zielie, Mason City, Bernice Hamand, LaGrange, Ky. and Jan Welton, Downey, Calif.; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother; infant sister; two sisters, Irma Daves and Evelyn Coyier and one grandson, Matthew Palmer. Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, Mason City, was in charge of arrangements.
Mayvis D. Sheimo, 81, Garner, Iowa, formerly of Willow Pointe, Mason City, Iowa, died Wednesday, April 20, 2005 at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City. A funeral service was held Saturday, April 23, at the Fertile Lutheran Church, Fertile, Iowa, with the Rev. Merlin Norris officiating. Interment was held at the Brush Point Cemetery, Fertile. Memorials may be given to the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit of North Iowa.
Mayvis was born Dec. 7, 1923 on the family farm in rural Fertile, (Worth County), the daughter of Tollef and Eleanor (Teigen) Felland. She attended rural schools in Fertile. Mayvis married
Erling Keith Sheimo on March 21, 1942 in Princeton, Mo. and they lived in Fertile. They moved to Buffalo Center, Iowa in 1955 and lived there until 1962 when they moved back to Fertile. She was a homemaker and waitress for many years at the Center Cafe and the A & W, in Buffalo Center, Lime Rock Cafe in Fertile and Carol's Cafe, the Regatta and the Half Moon in Clear Lake. After retiring she worked part-time at McDonald's in Clear Lake. Mayvis loved to sew, quilt and make stuffed animals for her grandkids. She loved the outdoors and gardening. She was a member of the Fertile Lutheran Church.
Mayvis is survived by four children, Marsha Smidt and her husband, Richard, Longmont, Colo., Pamela Hartman and her husband, Gene, Buffalo Center, Paulette Quame, Ventura, and Jeff Sheimo and his wife, Cheryl, Clear Lake; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one sister, Sharon Jenkins and her husband, Dennis, Longmont; two sisters-in-law, Ardis Sheimo, Fertile and Shirley Sheimo, Garner, Iowa.
Mayvis was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1994; two sisters, Naomi Hope and Kathleen Schlawin; a brother, Ordean "Bud" Felland; son-in-law, Greg Quame and great-grandson, Travis Owen Dotseth.
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.
Alvin Leroy Jacobs, 63, passed away March 20, 2005 at his home in Cottonwood, Az., after a battle with cancer. According to his wishes, his body was cremated.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 30, at 11:30 a.m. at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jan Burnett officiating. Memorials may be made to the Alvin Leroy Jacobs Memorial Fund or a charity of choice.
Alvin was born Aug. 18, 1941, to Wayne E. and Helena (Pannkuk) Jacobs in Kanawha, Iowa. His father was killed in WWII at Iwo Jima on Feb. 23, 1945.
He attended school in Kanawha and graduated from Belmond High School, Belmond, Iowa. After graduation he joined the U.S. Marines and served in the Bay of Pigs Invasion in Cuba. Upon his return home he married
Sandra Chapman, of Clarion, Iowa, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa on July 21, 1961. To this union two children were born, Laura Lee and Kenneth A.
He worked at the Clear Lake Bakery for a time and after leaving there he worked for a private electrician to learn the business. He then became a licensed electrical contractor.
He was divorced in 1975 and moved to Springfield, Ill. On Nov. 11, 1978 he married
Beverly Haydon in Pawnee, Ill., gaining four stepchildren.
They moved to Santa Rosa, Calif., where he had his own electrical contracting business until his retirement three years ago. Upon his retirement, they moved to Cottonwood, Az.
His passions were his family and friends. He loved the water and anything to do with it. He also loved to go RVing, camping, fishing, and hunting. He also enjoyed Nascar races.
Alvin is survived by his wife of 26 years, Beverly; a daughter, Laura Lee Mernka of Ft. Dodge, Iowa; a son, Kenneth (Michelle) Jacobs of Ft. Dodge; four grandchildren, Kaara and Braden Mernka, Nathan and Jena Jacobs all of Ft. Dodge; four stepchildren, Sheri (John) Williams of Covington, La., Lori (Mark) Lane of Reno, Nev., Maurice John Colen of San Francisco, Calif. and Leda Wagner of Santa Rosa, Calif.; four step-grandchildren, Leda and Esbel Williams of Covington, La. and Trisa Field and Jamie Lane of Reno, Nev., two step-great-grandchildren, Bradley Wilson and Jonathen Field of Reno, Nev.
He is also survived by his mother, Helena Boelman, Clear Lake; three sisters, Irene (Lee) Doland of Waterloo, Iowa, Diann (Victor) Lambert of Pierson, Iowa and Terry (Bruce) Carlson of Clear Lake; 13 nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and nephew and one great-great-niece.
He was preceded in death by his father, Wayne Jacobs, in 1945; his stepfather, Clarence Boelman in 1977; a sister, Cindy (Melvin) Brown in 2001 and a great-great-niece, Kylee Fowler in 2002.
