James Reed Hickey

Oct. 9, 1920 - Feb. 27, 2003

ATLANTA - James Reed Hickey, 82, of Atlanta, formerly of Keokuk, died Feb. 27, 2003 at Emory University Hospital, Atlanta.

He was born in Keokuk on Oct. 9, 1920, the son of James and Olive Hickey.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia, and a baby son, James Terrance.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. and Europe.

After his discharge, he joined the Army Reserves, retiring in 1980 as a Lt. Colonel. Mr. Hickey always maintained that being a platoon sergeant was the most difficult yet rewarding job he held; his men always came first, even in the mess line.

Mr. Hickey, retired vice-president of the American Red Cross, received his undergraduate degree and a master's degree in political science from the University of Iowa in 1950.

He joined the staff of the American Red Cross and worked 33 years there. While with the Disaster Operations Division, he participated in relief actions organized in response to floods and hurricanes.

One of his most challenging assignments was coordinating the delivery of medical supplies to the Cuban government in exchange for liberation of prisoners from the Bay of Pigs invasion on Christmas Eve, 1962. He was very proud of the certificate honoring his achievement, signed by retired General and President of the American Red Cross, Alfred M. Grunther.

Mr. Hickey worked with the United Nations and the World Meteorological Society on disaster preparedness plans for countries in East Asia. He was assigned to review Red Cross operations in Vietnam at the height of the war.

While in Vietnam, he met his childhood friend, Bill Lamb, who was directing Red Cross operations and together updated Red Cross strategies with U.S. Ambassador Ellsworth Bunker. Mr. Hickey told his friend, "We are a long way from Keokuk, Iowa."

Mr. Hickey was made Midwestern Area Manager for the Red Cross in 1972 and continued in that position even after being named vice president.

He retired from the Red Cross in 1983 and moved to Atlanta in 1986.

Mr. Hickey savored his Irish Heritage and was a marvelous storyteller. One of his favorite expressions was "Remember an Irishman will never lie to deceive you, but only to entertain you."

Mr. Hickey's family valued his courage, his principles, his convictions, his strength and his commitment to family. He imparted wit and wisdom to those who knew him. He commanded respect from his beloved family and colleagues. He inspired his family to follow the course set by the example of his leadership, which he showed to them, to his career and his country.

He lived and died with courage, fortitude and leadership. May he rest in peace in the loving arms of God, his creator.

He was cremated.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

There was no visitation.

A.S. Turner and Sons, Decatur, Ga., is in charge of arrangements.
