John E. Finton

CODEN (ALABAMA PORT), ALA. - John E. Finton, 48, of Coden (Alabama Port), Ala., died at home Sunday, June 6, 2004.
He was born Jan. 16, 1956, in Keokuk, the son of Robert E. and Mary Jane Coffman Finton. He lived in the Carthage, Ill., area for most of his youth. He moved to Des Moines for many years and then to Alabama in 1992. He worked for AL-FLA Plastics in Mobile, Ala., since 1992.
In addition to his wife, MaryAnn, he is survived by two daughters, Shannon Finton of Texas and Kelli Finton of Groton, Conn.; two stepdaughters, Alexandra Martinsen of Westminster, Md., and Keri McGinley of Colo, Iowa; and nine grandchildren. He is also survived by five brothers and two sisters, Matt and Steve of Warsaw, Ill., Robert of Norfolk, Va., Tim of Quincy, Ill., Tom of LaMarada, California, Mary McIntosh of Homestead, Iowa, and Carrie Hutson of Texas.
Mr. Finton also leaves behind many of his friends in Alabama Port who were like family to him.
Services will be Saturday at Farrar Methodist Church in Farrar, Iowa.
Burial will be in the Farrar Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alabama Port Fire Department in Alabama Port.
Arrangements were by Radney Funeral Home in Mobile.
Sally A. Gelsthorpe
May 17, 1939 - June 8, 2004
FORT MADISON - Sally A. Gelsthorpe, 65, Fort Madison, died at 11:44 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, 2004, in Fort Madison Community Hospital.
She was born May 17, 1939, in Fort Madison, the daughter of Carl R. and Hazel Smalley.
She married
James E. Gelsthorpe on Nov 28, 1957, in Denmark, Iowa. He preceded her in death on July 10, 1993.
She retired from the Gleason Corporation with 35 years of service.
She was a member of the Keokuk Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include: a son, Jerry M. (Kristi) Gelsthorpe of Fort Madison; a daughter, Mrs. Tony (Cynthia) Roberts of Fort Madison; eight grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; three brothers, Carl R. Miller Jr. of Fort Madison, James M. "Mike" Miller of Vacaville, Calif., and Larry L. Miller of Napa, Calif.; four sisters, Mrs. Fred (Beverly) Lamon of Fort Madison, Mrs. Charles (Nancy) Corns of Waverly, Peggy M. Miller of Fort Madison, and Mrs. Marion (Judith) Stephenson of Fort Madison; and a number of nieces and nephew.
She also was preceded in death by her parents.
Services are at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at King-Lynk Funeral Home in Fort Madison, with the Pastor Lane Perry officiating.
Burial will be in the Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation is after 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with family meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
A memorial has been established.
Robert Edward Hanley
Aug. 11, 1966 - May 1, 2004
LEAD HILL, Ark. - Robert Edward Hanley, 37, Lead Hill, Ark., formerly of Iowa, died Saturday, May 1, 2004, in Lead Hill.
He was born Aug. 11, 1966, in LaHarpe, Ill., the son of Ralph and Tempy (Genck) Bohnenkamp Hanley.
He had recently moved to Arkansas after many years as an Iowa resident. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, cooking, going places and visiting people.
Survivors include: his father of Davenport; his mother of Fort Madison; two sons, Robert Hanley Jr. and Charlie Hanley, both of Fort Madison; three sisters, Mary Cassaday of Clinton, Kathy Cain of Lead Hill, and Nicole Bohnenkamp of Keokuk; and a brother, Kevin Hanley of Fort Campbell, Ky.
Graveside services were held May 6 at the Milum Cemetery in Lead Hill, with the Rev. Kevin Rogers officiating.
Visitation was at Christeson Funeral Home.
Christeson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Robert 'Bob' Lee Lumberg
July 29, 1936 - June 13, 2004
BURLINGTON - Robert "Bob" Lee Lumberg, 67, of Burlington, died at 5:05 a.m. Sunday, June 13, 2004, in his home.
He was born July 29, 1936, in Galland, the son of Clarence E. and Jennie Edith Kite Lumberg.
He married
March 23, 1957, to Carla M. Smothers Lumberg. She survives.
He graduated from Burlington High School and attended Southeastern Community College.
He started employment with General Electric on May 8, 1961, and retired as an inspector in 1995.
He was a member of AARP, Moose, GE 25 Years Club, retired board member of the GE Retirees, Tama School Board member, and 22-year member of Drainage District #8 where he had also served as secretary. He enjoyed antique cars and trucks, reading and listening to the radio. His main enjoyment was being with his family and friends and his home.
He was of the Christian faith.
Additional survivors include: two daughters, Carlene M. Daley of Coralville, and Gail L. Gibson of Burlington; two sons, Scott A. Lumberg of Washington, and David A. Lumberg of Iowa City; three granddaughters; two great-granddaughters; and a sister, Joan Claftin of Coeur D. Alene, Idaho.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and a sister.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Lunning Chapel in Burlington, with the Rev. Beth Briggs officiating.
Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington.
Visitation is today, with family meeting friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
A memorial has been established with Great River Hospice.
Marvin Wayne Lindner
Nov. 21, 1923 - June 13, 2004
Marvin Wayne Lindner, 80, of rural Keokuk, died at 4 a.m. Sunday, June 13, 2004, at his home on the farm which had been his family's for more than 100 years.
He was born Nov. 21, 1923, the son of Leonora Berthold Lindner and Milton Lindner.
He married
Dorothy Nadine Bentzinger on Dec. 23, 1956. She survives.
He operated a service station for many years and later was a production manager at Sheller Globe. He retired in 1986.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Keokuk. He was an active member of the Farm Bureau, a Jackson Township Trustee, and served many years on the Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Department. He was a 50-year member of the Elks Lodge.
Additional survivors include: two sons, Michael Lindner, of McKinney, Texas, and Douglas Lindner, and his wife, Lori, of Solon; two grandchildren, Kearce and Kale Lindner of Solon; and a sister, Miriam Lodge, and her husband, William, of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonora and Milton Lindner, and a brother, Wilbur Lindner.
His body has been cremated.
A Celebration of his Life, visitation, and inurnment will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
Rachel M. Happs
Rachel M. Happs, 80, of Keokuk, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004, in Keokuk Area Hospital.
She was born June 3, 1923, in Wayland, Mo., the daughter of Harry and Gertrude Miller Jenkins.
She married
John L. Happs on Jan. 31, 1942. He preceded her in death on Jan. 29, 1983.
She had been employed at St. Joseph Hospital and Keokuk Area Hospital for 27 years, retiring in 1987.
She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Keokuk. She liked to play bingo and travel, often going on group bus trips. She was a collector of angels and hummingbirds. She was a loving mother and grandmother and cherished the times she spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include: seven daughters, Carol Happs Fojtik of Hamilton, Ill., Vickie Hamelton of Mesa, Ariz., JoAnn McVeigh and her husband, James, of Wayland, Mo., Connie Powers and her husband, Greg, of Catoosa, Okla., Donna Kay and her husband, Elmer, of Keokuk, Christine Priebe and her husband, Kris, of Hamilton, and Tracey Shuman and her husband, Mark, of Wayland; five sons, the Rev. John Happs Jr. and his wife, Kathy, of Murryville, Ill., the Rev. Jerry Lee Happs and his wife, Rebekah, of Hamilton, Raymond Happs and his wife, Sherry, and Stanley Happs, all of Keokuk, and the Rev. Rick Happs of Wayland; a sister, Mary Jo Sherrill and her husband, Larry, of Keokuk; a sister-in-law, Virginia Kimbrough of Warsaw, Ill., 36 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Jerry Happs Jr.; a granddaughter, Tammy Rash; her parents; her stepfather, Joe Henley; a sister-in-law, Wilma Hill; and a son-in-law, Mike Stevenson.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Church of the Nazarene in Keokuk, with the Revs. Grant Foster and Sylvia Tillman officiating.
Burial will be in Keokuk National Cemetery.
Visitation will be held after 1 p.m. Sunday at Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, with the family meeting with friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the Church of the Nazarene.
