Louise Dorsey Sale

Louise Dorsey Sale, 79, of Keokuk, died at 1:59 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, in Lexington Square, Keokuk.
She was born on March 7, 1925 in Bernie, Mo., the daughter of Albert and Lila May Barnes Carr.
She married
James Leroy Sale on Feb. 15, 1959, with the Rev. George Ramsey officiating the wedding ceremony. He preceded her in death on Dec. 15, 1992.
She had lived most of her life in the Iowa-Illinois area and had been employed in production at Sheller Globe in Keokuk for 34 1/2 years. She retired in 1984.
She was a member of the First Christian Church in Keokuk. She belonged to the M & M Circle and the Friendly Sunday School class.
She was a member of the Local 444 Retiree Club and the Retiree Craft Club. She was a member of the Keokuk Area Hospital Auxiliary and volunteered at the hospital. She was Volunteer of the Year in 2001 at KAH.
She loved her grandchildren, enjoyed helping others, and was an excellent baker.
Survivors include: two sons, Billy Dewayne Carr and his wife, Sharilyn, of Keokuk, and James E. Sale and his wife, Becky, of Keokuk; a daughter, Jean Nickel of Keokuk; a brother, A.W. "Bud" Carr of Camp Point, Ill.; three sisters, Goldie Greve of Poplar Bluff, Mo., Leranell Burke and her husband, Kenneth, also of Poplar Bluff, and Hazel Gatlin of Neelyville, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She also was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Bob Carr; five brothers; two sisters; and her stepfather.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at DeJong's Funeral Home, Keokuk, with the Rev. William Mitchell officiating.
Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Keokuk.
Visitation is Friday at the funeral home, with the family meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church of Keokuk or Lee County Hospice.

Velva Marlene Schmitt
July 19, 1946 - April 11, 2009
DES MOINES - Velva Marlene Schmitt, 62, of Des Moines died early Saturday, April 11, 2009, at her home.
She was born on July 19, 1946, in Keokuk, the daughter of Virgil A. and Velva M. LeMaster Johnson.
She married
James L. Irvin Jr. and then Carl Schmitt in 1976. He preceded her in death on Feb. 25, 2009.
She lived in Burlington before moving to Des Moines seven years ago.
She was a member of First Christian Church in Keokuk.
Survivors include: her mother, Velva Johnson; three children, Patsy Brewer and her husband, Rick, of Des Moines, and Merle Irvin and Darrell Irvin, both of Des Moines; a stepdaughter, Carol Vinson of Keokuk; a stepson, Jason Schmitt and his wife, Caroline, of Keokuk; two grandchildren, Katrina Irvin and Gabriella Brewer; stepgrandchildren, Danielle and Nathan Vinson and Matt, Jacob, Joshua and Allison Schmitt; and two great-grandchildren, Brionna Dent Chloe Vinson.
She also was preceded in death by her father and a brother, Gene Johnson.
Services will at 11 a.m. Saturday at DeJong's Funeral Home, Keokuk, with the Rev. William Mitchell officiating.
Private burial will be in Keokuk National Cemetery at a later date.
Visitation is from 10 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the funeral home, with family meeting friends during that time.
Memorials may be made in memory of Marlene.
Jeanette Jeane White
ANACOCO, La. - Jeanette Jeane White, 66, of Anacoco, La., died Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Leesville, La., and lived most of her life in Vernon Parish. She was a beautician by trade. She spent most of her life as a homemaker.
She survived by her husband of 50 years and seven months, James V. White of Anacoco.
Additional survivors include: two sons, Jimmy White and his wife, Kandie, of Keokuk and Michael White and his wife, Amanda, of Burr Ferry, La.; a daughter, Cynthia White and her companion, Johnny Parks, of Leesville; four brothers, Malcom Jeane of Burr Ferry, Milford Jeane of Burr Ferry, Jerald Jeane of Leesville and Lee “Bull” Jeane of Burry Ferry; five sisters, Lilian McKee of Pickering, La., Marie Kay of Leesville, Norma Cryer of Merryville, La., Faye West of Leesville and Margie Pace of Waxahachie, Texas; and seven grandchildren who were the light of her life, Jarred White of Baton Rouge, La., Whitney Wagaman and her husband, Corey, of Cedar Rapids, Megan White of Arlington, Tenn., and Krystal White, Rachel White, Levi Jeane and Teegan White, all of Burr Ferry.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilburn and Lola Jeane, and brothers Clyde Jeane and Jack Jeane.
Services were scheduled at 3 p.m. today at Labby Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, Leesville, with Dean Sebourn, Ricky Kay and Andy Addison officiating.
Burial will follow in the Burr Ferry Cemetery, Burr Ferry.
Visitation was held Thursday evening until the time of services today at the funeral home.

James T. McCarthy Jr.
Oct. 28, 1915 - April 14, 2009
KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. - Keokuk native James T. McCarthy Jr. died Tuesday, April 14, 2009, in Key Biscayne, Fla.
He was born on Oct. 28, 1915, the son of Grace and James T. McCarthy.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Betty.
Survivors include: a sister, Patricia Boettcher of Fairborn, Ohio; a brother, Joseph McCarthy, of Jackson, Mich.; five sons, Tom of San Francisco, Calif., Tim of Key Biscayne, Joe of Franconia, N.H., John, of Boise, Idaho, and Peter of North Kingston, R.I.; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by his parents.
A graduate of the University of Iowa College of Law, he moved to the East Coast in 1941, residing in Schenectady and Chappaqua, N.Y., Southport, Conn., West Barnstable, Mass., and Key Biscayne.
He had a 31-year career with General Electric Co., serving for some time as the company's chief tax counsel.
Services and burial were in West Barnstable.
Brenda Lee Pekerol

FORT MADISON - Brenda Lee Pekerol, 48, of Fort Madison died at 10 a.m. Monday, April 20, 2009, in Fort Madison Community Hospital.
She was born on Nov. 15, 1960, in Iowa City, the daughter of Robert W. Jr. and Zella A. (Bearbower) Kramer.
She married
Sadi Maurice Pekerol Sr. at Largo, Fla. He preceded her in death.
Her body has been cremated.
Private family services will be held at a later date.

Charles L. ‘Roy' Armstrong
Feb. 19, 1938 - April 20, 2009
BONAPARTE - Charles L. “Roy” Armstrong, 71, of Bonaparte died at 1:38 p.m. Monday, April 20, 2009, in Van Buren County Hospital, Keosauqua.
He was born on Feb. 19, 1938, in Des Moines, the son of Charles and Inez Armstrong.
He married
Rose James on June 21, 1967, in Fort Madison. She survives.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home and Crematory, Farmington, with the Rev. Larry Wallingford officiating.
Visitation is after 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, where the family will meet with friends from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service.
Memorials may be made to the PAWS Animal Shelter.
John W. ‘Jack' Cronin Jr.
Jan. 24, 1922 - April 20, 2009
John W. “Jack” Cronin Jr., 87, of Keokuk died at 6:15 p.m. Monday, April 20, 2009, in Keokuk Area Hospital.
He was born at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 24, 1922, in St. Joseph Hospital, Keokuk, the son of John William and Mayme Louise Thompson Cronin.
He was a bill collector for James Cameron and Sons. With the help of Henry Landman, he platted what is now the original and middle Keokuk Catholic Cemetery with a sheet for each lot and information on each known remains. Later all of this was lost in a fire at the city. Jack managed Cronin Coal Company followed by an almost perfect job as math teacher and basketball coach at St. Peter/Cardinal Stritch High School from 1952 to 1968. He was then a math teacher at Ernest Righetti High School in Santa Maria, Calif., from 1968 to 1984.
He married
MarScine Clara Thompson Burch on May 8, 1970, in Clark County, Nev. They renewed their vows on May 8, 2003, at All Saints Catholic Church, Keokuk. She survives.
He was a member of All Saints Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, VFW Post 3508 and American Legion Post 41. He had been a member of the Rotary Club for 33 years, with more than 30 years of perfect attendance. He played snare drum in St. Vincent's/St. Peter Regina Band, Keokuk Municipal Band, Boy Scout Drum and Bugle Corps and McNamara's Band.
Additional survivors include: stepsons, Steve Burch and his wife, Cherie, of Plainfield, Ill., and Christopher Burch and his wife, Darline, of Worthington, Ohio; five step-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; a nephew, Dr. John V. Doering; and two nieces, Kathleen Whitley and her husband, William, and Mary V. Matenear and her husband, Mark.
He also was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Ann Doering and her husband, Robert.
Jack appreciated his educational opportunities, including St. Vincent's Grade School and St. Peter's High School, the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent DePaul, Msgr. Martin O'Connell and St. Ambrose College where he earned a bachelor's degree, Dr. Francis Reganand and St. Louis University where he received his master's degree and The National Science Foundation.
“In spite of my many faults, God was great to me,” Jack was quoted as saying. “He gave me a great mother, father and sister and wonderful friends both in Keokuk and California. The best thing He gave to me was my wife MarScine. During World War II, he put me on a destroyer that worked with Navy TF 38 (Halsey) and TF 58 (Mitchner) but did not take any Japanese lead.”
A mass of Christian burial service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at All Saints Catholic Church, with the Rev. Paul Connolly officiating.
Burial will be in Keokuk National Cemetery, with full military honors.
Visitation is after 4 p.m. today at Greaves Mortuary, Keokuk, with family meeting friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. A Christian vigil service is at 7 p.m.
Memorials may be made to All Saints Catholic Church or First Lutheran Church.
