FORT MADISON - Forrest L. Deere, 85, of Fort Madison died at 2:30 a.m. Friday, May 15, 2009, in Fort Madison Community Hospital.
He was born on June 29, 1923, in Lee County, the son of Benjamin Franklin and Garnet Johnson Deere.
He married
Juanita Therme. He later married
Erma Phillips.
Graveside services were scheduled this morning in Greenglade Cemetery, Farmington, with the Rev. Larry Wallingford officiating.
Visitation was held prior to this morning's service at Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home and Crematory, Farmington.
A memorial has been established.
Dr. Joseph H. Krichel
NAPLES, Fla. - Dr. Joseph H. Krichel of Naples, Fla., formerly of Keokuk, died Tuesday, May 12, 2009, in Naples Community Hospital after a long, courageous battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held in Keokuk on Sunday, June 7.
Viola W. Neu Proenneke
June 14, 1913 - May 15, 2009
FARMINGTON - Viola W. Neu Proenneke, 95, of Farmington died at 11:05 a.m. Friday, May 15, 2009, in the Donnellson Health Center.
She was born on June 14, 1913, in Farmington, the daughter of George W. and Lydia Schaad Neu.
She married
Ford L. Proenneke on Oct. 13, 1943, in Kahoka, Mo. He preceded her in death.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Farmington United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Paul Rekward officiating.
Burial will be in Greenglade Cemetery, Farmington.
Visitation was held Sunday at Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home and Crematory in Farmington. Family met with friends at the Farmington United Methodist Church prior to today's services.
In lieu of flowers and plants, memorials may be made to the Farmington United Methodist Church or Great River Hospice.
Dorothy D. Casey
Dec. 24, 1933 - May 6, 2009
Dorothy D. Casey, 75, of Keokuk died at 10:40 a.m. Wednesday, May 6, 2009, in River Hills Village, Keokuk.
She was born on Dec. 24, 1933, in Warsaw, Ill., the daughter of Carl and Clara Shaffer Rupp.
She married
William F. Casey on Aug. 30, 1947, in Kahoka, Mo. He preceded her in death.
She was a lifelong area resident.
She worked at Holiday Inn for 22 years.
Dorothy was of the Christian faith.
Survivors include: two sons, Mike Casey and his wife, Barb, and Bill Casey III and his wife, Anita, all of Keokuk; a daughter, Brenda McKnight and her husband, Rusty, also of Keokuk; three grandchildren, Shawn Casey, Tim Casey and Shannon Masterson; three great-grandchildren, Braydon, Keegan and Avery Casey; two sisters, Cecila Courtois of Quincy, Ill., and Clara Ruffcorn of Keokuk; and several nieces and nephews.
She also was preceded in death by three sisters.
Graveside services were at 12:30 p.m. today in Keokuk National Cemetery, with the Rev. John Heath officiating.
There was no visitation.
Memorials may be made to River Hills Village Activities Fund.
Greaves Mortuary, Keokuk, was in charge of arrangements.
Carl Anderson
FARMINGTON - Carl Anderson, 82, of rural Farmington died at 2:40 p.m. Monday, May 11, 2009, in Henry County Health Center, Mount Pleasant.
Funeral arrangements are pending at the Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home and Crematory.
Thomas C. Ewers
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Thomas C. Ewers, 91, of Clearwater, Fla., died Sunday, April 19, 2009, in the Harbour Wood Nursing Home.
He and his wife, the late Mary Maxwell, were former residents of Keokuk.
His body has been cremated.
Burial will be at a later date in Keokuk National Cemetery.
Rhodes Funeral Directors was in charge of arrangements.
Chester Milligan
March 24, 1922 - May 4, 2009
Chester Milligan, 87, of Keokuk died Monday, May 4, 2009 at his home.
He was born on March 24, 1922, in Kirkwood, Ill., the son of Otis and Ferol Kerr Milligan.
He was united in marriage to Dorotha Powers on Sept. 20, 1942, in Kahoka, Mo. She preceded him in death on Sept. 7, 2005.
He had been employed with the Hannibal Quincy Truckline for more than 26 years before his retirement. Following his retirement, he was employed as custodian of Wells-Carey Elementary School and Keokuk Middle School for 10 years, retiring in June 1985.
He was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Keokuk and was very active in his faith.
He enjoyed fishing, reading and raising tomatoes in his garden. His family was very important to him and he enjoyed spending time with them.
Survivors include: four sons, Gerald Milligan and his wife, Mable, of Chicago, Ralph Milligan and his wife, Jackie, of Columbia, Mo., Ronald Milligan and his wife, Jane, of Harrisonville, Mo., and Gregory Milligan and his wife, Dorothy, of Keokuk; a daughter, Beverly Jones and her husband, Thomas, of Keokuk; 19 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and a sister, Barbara Clinton of Warsaw, Ill.
He also was preceded in death by a son, Emory James Milligan in 1981; a grandson; two brothers, Ralph and Wilford Milligan; and six sisters, Violet Testman, Vera James, Darlene Garrett, Jean Doran, Shirley Milligan and Fern Brown.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Fort Madison, with Elder Ronald Fish officiating.
There will be no visitation.
Memorials may be made to the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Carl L. Anderson
June 20, 1926 - May 11, 2009
FARMINGTON - Carl L. Anderson, 82, of rural Farmington, died at 2:40 p.m. Monday, May 11, 2009, in Henry County Health Center, Mount Pleasant.
He was born on June 20, 1926, in rural Trenton, the son of William P. and Mildred Marie Hauf Anderson.
He married
Virginia C. Harris on Nov. 26, 1947, in Mount Pleasant. She survives.
Visitation is after noon Thursday at Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home and Crematory, Donnellson, where family will meet with friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Bethel Bible Church, rural Argyle, with the Rev. Clegguart Mitchell and Brother Frank Tortat officiating.
Burial will be in the Embury Cemetery, rural Donnellson, with a flag presentation by the Donnellson American Legion.
Memorials may be made to the Embury Cemetery or the New Tribes Missions.
Kenneth Walter Davis Sr.
Jan. 11, 1956 -- June 3, 2009
DES MOINES -- Kenneth Walter Davis Sr., 53, formerly of Keokuk, died at 8:10 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, 2009, in Mercy Medical Center, Des Moines.
He was born on Jan. 11, 1956, in Keokuk, the son of Clarence and Mary Olvis Davis.
He was self employed as a handyman.
Survivors include: three sons, James Davis, Kenneth Davis and Robert Davis; a daughter, Ellie McGee; two brothers, Sherman Davis and Raymond Davis; three sisters, Mary Jones, Donna Davis and Rose Sonderlieter; and 10 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Butch Davis; and a sister, Margie Davis.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at DeJong's Funeral Home, Keokuk, with the Rev. Geoffrey Mitchell officiating.
Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery, Keokuk.
Visitation is from 11 a.m. until the time of the service Monday at the funeral home.
Billy Joe Cassady
Feb. 15, 1942 -- June 6, 2009
Billy Joe Cassady, 67, of Keokuk died at 11:25 a.m. Saturday, June 6, 2009, at River Hills Village, Keokuk.
He was born on Feb. 15, 1942, in Kirksville, Mo., the son of Charles and Ethel Brown Cassady.
He had been married
to Jean Honey.
He served in the United States Army in Germany during the Vietnam War.
He worked as a carpenter and was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Bill loved fishing and hunting. He was a craftsman and could build anything, from a jewelry box, to a toy box, to a house. In the spring, he would go mushroom hunting. One of his favorite things was to go camping at the mule festival and feed everyone at breakfast under the tent. Bill was always there to help remodel, work on vehicles or to baby-sit. Bill liked holidays and to give homemade gifts. He also liked socializing with his friends and playing a little poker.
urvivors include: a son, Michael Cassady and his wife, Rickie, of Keokuk; two daughters and a son of California, Yvonne Delacrus, Diane Sherwood and Billy Joe Cassady; stepchildren, Cindy Schneider and her husband, Steve, of Montrose, Randy Riddle and his wife, Kim, of Montrose, Larry Riddle and his wife, Sam, of Hamilton, Ill., Gary Riddle of Keokuk and Doug and Cathy Smith of Cedar Rapids; a brother, Steve Cassady of Moline, Ill.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including Mike’s children, Eva and Madysen Cassady of Kahoka, Mo., Michael Cassady of Las Vegas, Nev., and Katherine Cassady of Washington state.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Sammy and Howard Cassady; and his extra special friend and companion of 24 years, Nancy Riddle.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at DeJong’s Funeral Home, with Brother Bill Hauser officiating.
Burial will be in Keokuk National Cemetery, with full military rites.
Visitation is from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
