LANSING, Kan. –– Richard Lee Milligan, 59, of Lansing, Kan., formerly of Keokuk, died Wednesday, July 1, 2009, in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk.
Flossie V. Phillips
April 11, 1922 –– July 16, 2009
FORT MADISON –– Flossie V. Phillips, 87, of rural Fort Madison, died Thursday, July 16, 2009, at the West Point Care Center.
She was born on April 11, 1922, in Wheeling, Mo., the daughter of David and Maude Wells Mikels.
She was united in marriage to Elmer G. Phillips on April 22, 1955, in Keosauqua. He survives of rural Fort Madison.
At Mrs. Phillips’ request, cremation rites were accorded and there will be no visitation or services.
The family was assisted by Wilson Funeral Home, Kahoka, Mo.
Daniel James Bouressa
July 14, 1948 –– July 23, 2009
WEST POINT –– Daniel James Bouressa, 61, of West Point died at 3:35 p.m. Thursday, July 23, 2009, in the West Point Care Center.
He was born on July 14, 1948, at Clarkfield, Minn., the son of Harry and Leona Peppersack Bouressa.
He married
Pat Olson on Nov. 26, 1977, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, West Point. She survives.
A memorial mass was scheduled this morning at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, West Point, with the Rev. Apo T. Mpanda as celebrant.
Visitation was held Sunday at Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home and Crematory, West Point, where the family met with friends from 4 to 6 p.m. A Christian wake service took place at 6 p.m.
Burial was in the West Point Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Eagles Charities.
Mark Eugene Denham
Sept. 24, 1957 –– Aug. 3, 2009
ROWLETT, Texas –– Mark Eugene Denham, 51, of Rowlett, Texas, died Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, in Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, Texas.
He was born on Sept. 24, 1957, in Bloomfield, the son of Eugene C. and Marlene Boeckman Denham. Following the death of his mother from a rare kidney disease, which Mark was later diagnosed with, his dad married
Ruth Pierce.
He was united in marriage to Norma Torres on July 29, 1989, in Greenville, Texas. She survives.
His stepmother of Kahoka, Mo., also survives.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Paul United Church of Christ, Kahoka, with the Rev. Kenneth Beckmann officiating.
Burial will follow in the Kahoka Cemetery.
Visitation is after 4 p.m. Thursday at Wilson Funeral Home, Kahoka, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
A memorial will be established.
Richard Lee Milligan
April 19, 1950 –– July 1, 2009
LANSING, Kan. –– Richard Lee Milligan, 59, of Lansing, Kan., formerly of Keokuk, died Wednesday, July 1, 2009, in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico.
He was born on April 19, 1950, in Keokuk, the son of Edlo P. and Myrtle Kite Milligan.
He married
Becky Witzenburg on March 22, 1975, in Oskaloosa. They later divorced.
He graduated from Keokuk High School with the Class of 1968. Following his high school graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marines and proudly served his country from 1968 to 1972.
He graduated from Southeastern Community College, Keokuk, in 1974 with an associate of science degree and received his bachelor’s degree in physics from Western Illinois University, Macomb, in 1979.
He taught science at Keokuk High School from 1979 to 1980 and at Van Buren Community High School in Keosauqua from 1980 to 1981. He then was employed at Chevron Chemical Company in Fort Madison as a chemical lab technician and at the Defense Mapping Agency Aerospace Center in St. Louis as a physical scientist. Most recently, he had been employed with the Department of the Army Battle Command Center on Fort Leavenworth, Kan., as a research analyst.
He was a member of the American Legion.
He enjoyed collecting books on military medals and reading non-fiction books about war heroes. He also enjoyed going to the movies.
Survivors include: a daughter, Amie Milligan-Peck and her husband, Jason, of Fairfax; a brother, Charles J. Milligan of Keokuk; two sisters, Carolyn “Susie” Jenkins and her husband, Rodney, of Hamilton, Ill., Darla K. Zumdome and her husband, Jody, of Montrose; and nieces and nephews, Tim Milligan, Charles S. Milligan, Tammy Schroeder, Tony Milligan, Gregory Wood, Michael Wood, Clayton Jenkins, Derek Jenkins, Christina Campbell, Cindy Johnson, Breanne Zumdone and Kaylee Zumdome.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mary Milligan; and a brother, Roger Milligan.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Vigen Memorial Home, Keokuk, with Brother Bill Hauser officiating.
Burial with military rites will be in the New Boston Cemetery, New Boston.
Visitation is from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with family meeting friends at that time.
Memorials may be made to the Keokuk Public Library.
James Robert McVeigh
June 10, 1922 –– Jan. 2, 2010
MONTROSE –– James Robert McVeigh, 87, of Montrose died Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, at his home.
He was born on June 10, 1922, in Hamilton, Ill., the son of Leo and Helen Greenslaugh McVeigh.
He was united in marriage to Mildred Davis on Aug. 31, 1941, in the Methodist Church parsonage at Montrose. She survives.
Additional survivors include: three daughters, Ardath Tweedy and her husband, Karl, of Keokuk, Elizabeth Barker and her husband, Mike, of Keokuk, and Lois Easton and her husband, Larry, of Kansas City, Kan.; two sons, Gregory McVeigh and his wife, Barbara, of Kahoka, Mo. and David McVeigh and his wife, Karen, of Montrose; 10 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Joann Rooney of Cedar Rapids and Dorothy Junkins of Chino Valley, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Elice Stockwell, and a brother, Dick McVeigh.
Jim graduated from Montrose High School with the Class of 1941. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in the Medical Corps during World War II.
He began working for Santa Fe Railroad in 1941 in Fort Madison. In 1968, he took the position of material supervisor in the Argentine office for Santa Fe and relocated to Kansas City, Kan. He retired from Santa Fe in 1983. In 2004, he moved back to his childhood home in rural Keokuk.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Montrose. While living in Kansas City, Jim was very active in his church there and volunteered in the soup kitchen and food pantry.
He served as a volunteer fireman for the Montrose Fire Department for 27 years. He enjoyed working in his garden, woodworking, square dancing and bowling. Jim and Mildred enjoyed traveling and spending their winters in Mission, Texas.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Vigen Memorial Home, Keokuk, with the Rev. Goldie Laymon officiating.
Burial with military rites will be in the Montrose Cemetery.
Visitation is after 1 p.m. today at the funeral home, with family meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church in Montrose.
Todd Edward Matlock
Jan. 7, 1965 –– Feb. 27, 2010
FORT MADISON –– Todd Edward Matlock, 45, of Fort Madison died at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, at his home.
He was born on Jan. 7, 1965, in Keosauqua, the son of Gordon and Marjorie Priest Matlock.
He married
Barb Johnson on Sept. 29, 1984, in Montrose. He later married
Heather Richard on July 4, 2003, in Fort Madison. She survives.
He was a truck driver for W.M. Johnson Truck Lines in Fort Madison.
He was a member of the Fort Madison Elks Lodge.
He enjoyed yard work, golf, cooking and had quite a sense of humor. He coached Little League football and baseball. He was the drummer for several local bands over the years.
Additional survivors include: two sons, Derek and Laine Matlock, both of St. Charles, Ill.; a stepdaughter, Kerrigan Austin of Fort Madison; his father and stepmother, Gordon (Linda Humphrey) Matlock of Montrose; four siblings, Mark Matlock of Keokuk, Holli (Joe) Johnson of Montrose, Scott (Victoria) Matlock of Donnellson and Kirk Matlock of Burlington; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother and grandparents.
Visitation is after 2 p.m. Tuesday at King-Lynk Funeral Home and Crematory, Fort Madison, with family meeting friends from 5 to 7 p.m.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. John Simpson officiating.
Burial will be in the Montrose Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established. Contributions may be left at King-Lynk Funeral Home and Crematory, Fort Madison.
May Kirchner
May Kirchner, 90, of River Hills Village, Keokuk, died at 5:25 p.m. Monday, May 18, 2009, in River Hills Village.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home and Crematory in Donnellson.
Forrest L. Deere
June 29, 1923 - May 15, 2009
FORT MADISON - Forrest L. Deere, 85, of Fort Madison died at 2:30 a.m. Friday, May 15, 2009, in Fort Madison Community Hospital.
He was born on June 29, 1923, in Lee County, the son of Benjamin Franklin and Garnet Johnson Deere.
He married
Juanita Therme. He later married
Erma Phillips.
Graveside services were held Monday morning in Greenglade Cemetery, Farmington, with the Rev. Larry Wallingford officiating.
Visitation was held prior to the service at Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home and Crematory, Farmington.
A memorial has been established.
