Terry Batley
WILLIAMSON, Ga. – Terry Lee Batley, 62, of Williamson, Ga., lost his battle with a rare form of Lymphoma on July 17, 2017, at the Cancer Treatment Center of America in Newnan, Ga.
Terry was born Oct. 11, 1954, in Keokuk, the son of George Junior and Irene Mae (Ramsey) Batley.
Terry graduated from Keokuk High School and went on to receive a bachelor’s degree from Western Illinois University.
He was a process engineer for the three major auto companies for more than 30 years. After retirement from engineering, he continued to help others as a customer service representative for Lowe’s Home Improvement store in Griffin, Ga.
He had a passion for the outdoors, including hiking, camping, canoeing, fishing and hunting.
Terry is survived by his wife, Sandy Mitchell Batley; mother, Irene Bloyd; son, Thomas Shane (Stacey Nichols, fiancee); brothers, Steve (Michelle), Rick (Tracy) and James Dale; stepsister, Becky Bloyd; two grandaughters, Alexis and Devan Batley; three great-grandchildren, Kayvion and Malachi Underwood and Kayne Howell, all of Keokuk; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Terry was preceded in death by his father.
Terry’s request for cremation was provided by the McKoon Funeral Home in Newnan. Also, per Terry’s request, there will be no funeral or memorial service.

Betty Clemenson
FARMINGTON – Betty E. Clemenson, 86, of Farmington, passed away at 9:12 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2017, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Funeral services are pending at Schmitz Funeral Home in Farmington.
Judith "Judy" Mahoney
FORT MADISON – Judith Sue “Judy” Mahoney, 63, of rural Fort Madison, passed away at 1 a.m. Sunday, July 30, 2017, at her home.
She was born Nov. 7, 1953, in Fort Madison, the daughter of Kenneth Roy and Dona (Dockum) Hagmeier.
Survivors include her husband, Mike; and two sons, including locally, Kevin (Bailie Siemens) Mahoney of Fort Madison.
Per her wishes, her body has been entrusted to Schmitz Funeral Home for cremation.
A celebration of life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at her home 2194 West Point Road, West Point, IA 52656.
James 'Jim' Schulte
James O. “Jim” Schulte, 56, of Keokuk died Saturday, July 22, 2017, at his home.
He was born Sept. 3, 1960, in Keokuk, the son of Bill A. and Phyllis E. Beaty Schulte.
Jim graduated from Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School in Keokuk with the Class of 1978.
Jim had been employed at Ringstrom Electric in Keokuk and later at Keokuk Steel Castings for 10 years until his retirement on Dec. 15, 1996. Throughout his life, he worked on his own doing construction work. He always enjoyed helping others with projects.
Jim loved martial arts and held a black belt in karate. He taught classes for many years and had recently participated in a tournament and won first place. He also was an avid boater and loved to fish and hunt.
He is survived by four children, Sarah Headrick of Madison, Wis., Aaron Schulte of Keokuk, James Schulte Jr. of Arizona and Jenna Schulte of Arizona; four brothers, Bill Schulte of Fresno, Texas, Tom Schulte of Excelsior Springs, Mo., Chris Schulte of Keokuk and Tony Schulte of Keokuk; two sisters, Suzie Flockhart of Montrose and Reta Welsh of Rapid City, S.D.; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Margaret, in infancy.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, with Pastor Brian Byquist officiating. Burial will be in Sandusky Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday prior to the service at the funeral home, with family meeting with friends at that time.
Nancy Taylor
Nancy K. Taylor, 73, of Keokuk, formerly of Hamilton, Ill., passed away on Thursday, July 20, 2017, at her home in Keokuk.

Julie Robinson
Julie Kay Robinson, 56, of Keokuk, died early June 16, 2017, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Robinson of Keokuk; daughter, Briann (Nate) Washburn of Oskaloosa; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and nephews and nieces.
A celebration of Julie’s life will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at God’s Way Christian Center in Keokuk.
David Holmes
CHARLESTON – David L. Holmes, 56, of Charleston, passed away at 2:26 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, 2017, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill.
He was born Aug. 12, 1960, in Fort Madison, the son of LaVern “Stub” and Marjorie (Richers) Holmes.
Survivors include his wife, Shelly Reid of Charleston; father, LaVern “Stub” Holmes of Montrose; brother, Gary Holmes of Paducah, Ky.; sister, Lori (Alan) Pollpeter of Fort Madison; nephew, Nichalus Ellison; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Marjorie McCarty; and stepfather, Robert McCarty.
David attended Central Lee Schools. He was a self employed owner/operator hauling farm products. David was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting, riding his four-wheeler, camping, yard work and gardening.
A private graveside service will be held in Montrose Cemetery in rural Montrose. Burial will be in Montrose Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in his memory and can be mailed to the family at Schmitz Funeral Home, P.O. Box 56, Donnellson, IA 52625.

James 'Jim' Ellingboe
DONNELLSON – James Henry “Jim” Ellingboe, 80, of Donnellson, passed away at 6:03 p.m. July 12, 2017, at Iowa City Veterans Affairs Health System in Iowa City.
He was born Dec. 24, 1936, in Hastings, Minn., the son of Raymond H. and Florence J. Girgen Ellingboe.
On Feb. 19, 1959, he married
Lorraine Doffing at Fort Lewis, Wash. She preceded him in death on March 13, 2016.
Survivors include his seven children, David (Nancy) Ellingboe of Donnellson, Mike (Kelly) Ellingboe of West Point, Pamela (Dale) Kramer of Donnellson, Wendy (Roland) Burgess of Donnellson, Perry (LeeLee) Ellingboe of Hamilton, Ill., Tom Ellingboe of Keokuk and Scott Ellingboe (Jonathan Cabezas Olcoz) of Verona, Wis.; 17 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and his Yorkiepoo named Dixie. Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Betty Charles of St. Paul, Minn.; two brothers-in-law, Paul (Rita) Doffing and Dennis (Thea) Doffing, both of Hastings; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lorraine; and sister, Beverly Donndelinger.
Jim was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Farmington and the Donnellson American Legion. He was a U.S. Army Veteran. Jim enjoyed fishing, playing cards, gardening, canning and attending his grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s sporting events
Friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Schmitz Funeral Home in Donnellson, where the family will receive friends from 1 to 4 p.m. A parish rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Farmington, with Father Dennis Hoffman as celebrant. There will be a flag presentation by the Donnellson American Legion at the church following the mass.
Following the service, his body will be cremated and a private family burial will be held at a later date in the Evangelical Cemetery in Donnellson.
A memorial has been established in his memory to Westview Park in Donnellson.

Robert Nye
ARGYLE – Robert Lynn Nye, 55, of Argyle, passed away at 2:30 a.m. Saturday, July 8, 2017.
Robert was born July 9, 1961, in Keokuk, the son of Leland Robert and Belva Ann Thompson Nye.
He was united in marriage to Joyce Toops on Aug. 24, 1996, in Reed Springs, Mo. She survives.
He was raised in the Argyle area and had lived on Belfast Road for the last 19 years. He was employed by Waggoner Solutions as a mechanic and farm worker. Robert likes horses, gardening, antique cars, and making anything mechanical. He built operating cars from stuff lying around on the farm. He enjoyed his motorcycles.
In addition to his wife, Joyce, he is survived by his mother, Belva Skinner of Argyle; six children, Robert L. Nye Jr. (KC) of Texas, Michael Nye Novak (Jordyn) of Argyle, Jennifer Shallcross (Josh) of Fort Madison, Chris Nye (Steve) of Fort Madison, Mike Christy (Tia) of Keokuk and Lindsey Benstine (Nate) of Keokuk; a sister, Mary Phillips (Terry) of Argyle; two brothers, Gary Nye (Deana) of Keokuk and Devin Juel (Teleasha Corns) of Texas; 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; uncle, Gary Thompson of Argyle; aunt, Karen Wright of Keokuk; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father; son, Justin Christy; grandparents; and two uncles, Henry Thompson and Ralph Nye.
A gathering of family and friends will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at DeJong-Greaves Celebration of Life Center, 917 Blondeau St., Keokuk. A memorial service to celebrate his life will follow at 7 p.m., with Pastor Donnie Skinner officiating.
R. Larry Brown
MONTROSE – R. Larry Brown, 88, of Montrose, died Tuesday, July 11, 2017, at his home.
He was born March 15, 1929, in Fort Madison, the son of Raymond Lester and Martha Elizabeth Wardlow Brown.
On Nov. 26, 1950, he was united in marriage to Lola Jean Wulf. She preceded him in death on April 10, 2017.
Larry graduated from Keokuk High School.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and proudly served his country.
He was a member of the Montrose Lions Club and American Legion Post No. 41 in Keokuk. He had served on the Central Lee School Board and was a past president. He also had served on the FHA Board. Larry spent many years volunteering at the Montrose Watermelon Festival.
Larry was a lifelong farmer and needed nothing more to make life worthwhile than to farm his fields and love his family. He was a wonderful, devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who leaves for his family a lifetime of wonderful memories. He enjoyed spending time with his dogs.
He is survived by a son, Gordon (Linda) Brown of Montrose; two daughters, Diane (Dennis) Grossman of Farmington and Carla (Curtis) Varnold of Parker, Colo.; seven grandchildren, Denise (Jason) Evans of Vinton, Dawn (Eric) Conklin of Center Point, Dana (Justin) Huling of Hillsboro, Joshua (Jillian) Varnold of Castle Rock, Colo., Nathan Varnold of Denver, Colo., Craig Carter of Montrose and Rebekah Carter of Montrose; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Roger (Barb) Brown of Keokuk; and nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, Larry also was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Ron Brown.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, with Laurie Wardlow and Elaine Foley officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Montrose Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the family meeting with friends at that time.
Memorials may be made to Montrose United Methodist Church or Montrose Cemetery.
