CEDAR RAPIDS – Judge Edward J. “Nick” McManus, 97, died on March 20, 2017, in Cedar Rapids.
The burial ceremony will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Keokuk National Cemetery.
William 'Bill' Toops, 82, Keokuk
William E. “Bill” Toops, 82, of Keokuk, died Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at his home.
He was born June 25, 1934, in rural Alexandria, Mo., the son of John Earl and Nellie Katherine Dennison Toops.
He was first united in marriage to Colette Lillard in 1957. They later divorced. Bill was united in marriage to Barbara Dietsch Dougherty on May 5, 1979, in Mount Pleasant. She survives.
Other survivors include three daughters, Toni Nichols (Dean) of Keokuk, Vicki Somoza (Carlos) of Tehachapi, Calif., and Sheri Brothers (Ed) of Gillette, Wyo.; a son, Jerry Toops (Lisa) of St. Francisville, Mo.; two stepdaughters, Kim Dougherty of Keokuk and Karen Davis (Jim) of St. Francisville; a stepson, Robert Dougherty (Heather Brady) of Des Moines; 15 grandchildren, Morgan Malone (Jason) of St. Francisville, Cody Glasgow (Haley Jones) of Montrose, Anna Collins (Levi) of Farmington, Carlos Ryan Somoza of Tehachapi, Sara Ward (Bryan Morrell) of St. Louis, Mo., Tommy Nichols (K-Lynn) of Keokuk, Will Nichols (Carissa Gipe) of Ursa, Ill., Elisabeth Pomeroy (Jesse) of Cedar Rapids, Andrew Brothers (Heather) of Camp Pendleton, Calif., Tanner, Tara and Tucker Toops, all of St. Francisville, Lucy Dougherty of Winterset, Alex Dougherty of Winterset and Quinn Dougherty of Des Moines; nine great-grandchildren, Rowan Malone, Parker Collins, Lucia Somoza, Gage Rojan, Rylie, Ryan and Dylan Brothers, Oliver Nichols and Laine Pomeroy; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Dick, Donnie and Larry Toops; six sisters, Florence Six, Dorothy Roberts, Marjory Griffith, Berty Brewer, Tootie Swafford and Betty Walker; and a great-grandson in infancy, Timothy Nichols.
Bill had been employed at Sheller Globe in Keokuk for 40 years until his retirement.
He enjoyed spending time outdoors. He loved hunting, fishing and metal detecting.
A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Sand Cemetery in St. Francisville, with Pastor Shawn McAfee officiating.
There will be no visitation.
Evelyn White, 99, Farmington
FARMINGTON – Evelyn Pearl White, 99, of rural Farmington, died Thursday, May 25, 2017, at Clark County Nursing Home in Kahoka, Mo.
Evelyn was born Oct. 16, 1917 in Van Buren County near Farmington, a daughter of Benjamin and Lourena Evans Delker.
Survivors include her children, Lorene (Irwin “Gene”) Morris of rural Bonaparte and Warren White of rural Farmington.
A private graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Christy Cemetery.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka.
Joanne 'Kris' Sterne, 61, San Diego, Calif.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Joanne Kristine “Kris” Sterne, 61, of San Diego, Calif., formerly of Hamilton, Ill., passed away on Friday, May 12, 2017, at La Mesa Hospice Center in La Mesa, Calif.
A celebration of life will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 30, at the Hamilton Methodist Church.
Jacqueline Wallingford, 65, Stockton, Calif.
STOCKTON, Calif. – Jacqueline Pearl Wallingford, 65, died peacefully on May 12, 2017, with her family at her side in her daughter’s home in Elk Grove, Calif., after a brief struggle with cancer.
Jacque was born on July 26, 1951, in Stockton, Calif., the daughter of Jason Daniel Anderson and Jeannette Alexine Wold Anderson.
Jacque is survived by her husband, Dale; and two daughters.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Vale Cemetery, north of Bonaparte, with the Rev. Michael Elrod officiating. Schmitz Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Valerie Lihs
DONNELLSON – Valerie Rose Lihs, 6 weeks, of Donnellson, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital in Iowa City, due to complications with her heart and lungs since birth.
She was born April 19, 2017 in Iowa City, the daughter of Chad D. and Lisa R. Briggs Lihs.
A celebration of life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Schmitz Funeral Home in Donnellson, with Pastor Peg Ellingson officiating. The family will receive friends from 9 to 11 a.m. that morning.
Doloros 'Dodie' Jerome
FORT MADISON – Doloros “Dodie” Jerome of Fort Madison passed away Feb. 4, 2017.
Born Feb. 8, 1931, she was the only child of Frank and Margaret Gantz. Dodie was raised near Packwood.
She attended Parsons College in Fairfield, where she met and married
Wilson “Bill” Jerome on Feb. 24, 1951, at Parsons’ Barhydt Chapel.
Bill and Dodie moved to Fort Madison in 1956 and raised their three children, Becky, Debbie and Jerry. Besides being a homemaker, Dodie worked at several retail stores downtown, starting first with Heifner Jewelry, Lou Marise, The Colony Shop and Under the Sun. She supported Bill throughout his teaching and coaching career and also found time to be an active member of the community. Dodie was a longtime member of Potowonok Chapter of King’s Daughters, the Great River Garden Club, and in recent years, the KV Chapter of PEO. Dodie had a special place in her heart for Old Settlers Park and was one of the original members of the group and served on many of its committees. Bill and Dodie’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren all have special memories of 331 Avenue E and Old Settlers Park. Dodie loved to entertain and was a wonderful cook. Her family and friends enjoyed her Mexican dinners, homemade chicken and noodles, birthday cakes, “Dodie Doodles,” caramel corn and English toffee. Dodie also was an avid gardener, tending to her daylilies, roses, hostas and orchids. She enjoyed listening to all types of music, from Johnny Cash and Simon Estes to Gypsy Kings and Switchback. She also enjoyed reading, knitting, her Scottie dogs, birthday lunches, Derby Day activities, dining with friends and winter trips to Arizona. Dodie never failed to show enthusiastic support for her family’s interests, especially when it came to athletics – starting first with Bill, ending with JJ and all the grandkids and great-grandkids in between.
She is survived by her children, Becky (Mike) Riggs, Debbie (Guy) Bittner and Jerry “JJ” (Dana); grandchildren, Sara, Max (Kristie), Chase, Elle, Sady and Bianca (Chris); and great-grandchildren, Gavin, Abot, Tyce, Berkley and Gantz; nieces, nephews and many friends.
Dodie was preceded in death by her husband.
A celebration of life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 24, in Old Settlers Park. Please join us for lunch in the park after honoring Dodie.

TEMPE, Ariz. – Doris Louise Gilbo, 90, of Tempe, Ariz., passed away on June 7, 2017, at Friendship Village in Tempe.

Joseph Tweedy
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Joseph Andrew Tweedy, 53, went home to our Lord on June 9, 2017, at Visiting Nurse Hospice Home in Fort Wayne, Ind., after a long battle with cancer.
Joseph was a 1987 graduate of the University of Iowa.
He served 10 years in the U.S. Navy as a Supply Corps officer.
He worked for nearly 20 years in purchasing and supply chain management, most recently for Dometic Corp. in LaGrange, Ind.
He was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church.
He married
Jennifer Fuelling Tweedy, who survives, on June 10, 2000.
Other survivors include two sons, Brock and Cole Tweedy, at home; parents, Karl and Ardath Tweedy of Keokuk; in-laws, Roger and Arlene Fuelling of Decatur, Ind.; brother, Jeff (Brenda) Tweedy; sisters, Julie (Mark) Bowles and Jenny (Jim) Harris; sister-in-law, Beth (Mike) Quinn; brothers-in-law, Dean (Mindy) Fuelling and Josh (Sara) Fuelling; four nieces and six nephews.
The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, with calling an hour prior, at Ascension Lutheran Church, 8811 St. Joe Road, Fort Wayne, with Pastor John Stube officiating. Calling also will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at D.O. McComb & Sons Pine Valley Park Funeral Home, 1320 East Dupont Road, Fort Wayne.
Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery, Decatur.

Joanne 'Kris' Sterne, 61, San Diego, Calif.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Joanne Kristine “Kris” Sterne, 61, of San Diego, Calif., formerly of Hamilton, Ill., passed away on Friday, May 12, 2017, at La Mesa Hospice Center in La Mesa, Calif.
She was born on Sept. 29, 1955, in Keokuk, the daughter of Starlie and Mary Gene Scott Lowman.
Her father and a nephew, Jonathan Lowman, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her mother, Mary Gene Scott Lowman of Hamilton; a daughter, Sarah Sterne of San Diego; two sisters, Susan (Vern) Hanks of Heyworth, Ill., and Theresa (Doug) O’Leary of Carlsbad, Calif.; four brothers, Ken Lowman and David (Loretta) Lowman, both of Hamilton, Michael (Brenda) Lowman of Orlando, Fla., and Rick Lowman of Murray, Ky.; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Kris attended Robert Morris College and worked as office manager and bookkeeper for J. B. & D. Siding in Galesburg, Ill., for many years. In San Diego, she worked at a resort and at Qualcomm.
Kris loved the ocean and combing the beaches for sea glass. She also loved supporting her daughter in her triathlete activities. In addition, she enjoyed gardening, playing the piano, camping, concerts and everything outdoors.
There will be a celebration of life from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 30, at the United Methodist Church in Hamilton.
Memorials may be made to the Memorial Bell Choir at Hamilton United Methodist Church or to Hamilton Public Library.
Leonard Moore, 59, Keokuk
Leonard J. Moore, 59, of Keokuk, formerly of St. Patrick, Mo., died Saturday, March 25, 2017, in Keokuk.
A memorial fish fry/carry-in dinner will be at noon Saturday at Victory Park in Keokuk. Inurnment will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery.
