Robert "Bob" Lee, 55, Santa Fe, N.M.

SANTA FE, N.M. – Robert “Bob” Nash Lee, beloved son, brother, uncle and friend, died peacefully on March 29 at his mother’s home, after a two and a half year battle with stage IV lung cancer. Living until his last breath with tenacity, generosity and a positive spirit, he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Born on Aug. 18, 1961, in Ensenada, Mexico, Bob was proud of his dual citizenship. Always curious and sociable, he enjoyed spending time as a young boy hanging out with the boat tenders around the docks while on vacations with the family in Las Cruces, Mexico. When the family lived in Ankara, Turkey, little Bobby often visited with the garbage men as they took their lunch breaks in their trucks. As an adult living in Phoenix, Ariz., he took Thanksgiving dinners to homeless people living on the streets.

Bob attended elementary and junior high school in Keokuk, where he had many legendary adventures and misadventures with numerous friends. He then attended high school at Deerfield Academy, graduating in 1979 and making many lifelong friends in his four years there. He attended Tufts University and then the University of Iowa, where he received his bachelor of arts degree in 1983.

Bob’s intelligence and wit made him a charming and motivational public speaker. An adventurer and believer in self-reliance, he earned his black belt in karate and launched a self-defense program, under the name Robert Lee Associates, to help people of all ages protect themselves. His self-defense VHS tapes live on. He also was generous with his defensive driving tips.

Loyal in all things, Bob most recently worked for Financial and Insurance Management Consultants for 19 years, rising to the position of vice president of sales. He considered his colleagues there to be an extended family.

Bob lived in Phoenix for 31 years before moving to Santa Fe, N.M., in late 2016 so his family could care for him. He left several close friends in Phoenix.

He loved golfing and skiing with his buddies, and spending holidays with his family. We will all remember long phone calls in between visits in which Bob would tell tales, plan his next adventures, tell us how to prepare for the impending end of civilization, and share advice – including these key nuggets: stock up on non-perishable goods, and never buy a time share.

A natural comedian, Bob regaled everyone with a spot-on Austin Powers impersonation, complete with fake teeth and a lace cravat.

More than anything else, Bob loved dogs. During his life, he took in at least six rescue dogs, and dreamed one day of opening a sanctuary for abandoned canines.

While Bob did not have children of his own, that did not stop him from chiming in to his siblings on how best to raise their children (we say that with love, Bob!). He was a fun and loving uncle to his nieces, Celia, Rachel and Madeleine; and nephews, Alex, Emmet, Justin and Jack. He also was a friend, a fellow prankster, a father figure. He will always be remembered with deep fondness for allowing them to dress him up as a woman, prank him with rubber snakes and salt, for playing endless rounds of Life, and for remembering their birthdays at surprising times with belated gift cards. He had planned to write a book of advice for his nieces and nephews based on many hard-earned lessons in his life.

Bob was predeceased by his father, Alan. He is survived by his mother, Lynn of Santa Fe; sisters, Carolyn (Ted) and Elizabeth of Santa Fe, and Catherine Christie (Earl) of Boston; brother, David (Chris) of Boston; and his beloved rescue dog, Brisa.

The family thanks the compassionate caregivers at Ambercare who supported us all in Bob’s last few weeks, and extends their deep gratitude to the many friends across the country who helped and supported Bob in his journey.

Bob’s family will honor his wish that his ashes be scattered along with those of his dogs who preceded him in death. A celebration of his life will take place at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 24, at St. Bede’s Episcopal Church in Santa Fe.

In lieu of flowers, Bob would appreciate contributions to the Arizona Animal Welfare League & SPCA, a no-kill shelter in Phoenix (aawl.org).
