Robert Donnelly, 86, Bixby, Okla.
BIXBY, Okla. – Robert Myron Donnelly, 86, born Oct. 23, 1930, in Keokuk, to John Joseph and Mary Caroline Kirkpatrick Donnelly, passed away March 31, 2017, at his home near Bixby, Okla.
Early on, Bob loved music. He took to the drums naturally and enjoyed participating in band in school, marching in a drum and bugle corps, and playing in other bands at dances and events.
After graduating from Keokuk High School in 1948, Bob joined the U.S. Air Force Band. While posted in Indianapolis, he met a girl in Waynetown, Ind., Ruth Blackford.
Bob and Ruth were married
Sept. 3, 1949, at Waynetown Baptist Church. As Bob always explained it later, he had “waited until I was 18 to get married!”
Following Bob’s Air Force service, he and Ruth settled in Waynetown, and added daughter Linn, then son Bill, and finally daughter Denise. Bob worked as a purchasing agent at Impex in Crawfordsville, Ind. Bob’s second job, also his hobby, was playing drums with various bands around Indiana. He volunteered as president of the school band parents and the Parent Teacher Organization, participated in the Crawfordsville Jaycees, and served as a Junior Achievement advisor. He and Ruth and the kids took some great car trips. Bob enjoyed golf, swimming and Indy car racing.
In 1969, Bob learned a music opportunity that included mentoring youth – Sing Out Montgomery County, a local branch of the Up With People movement – needed a musical director. Soon the entire Donnelly family was involved in Sing Out Montgomery County, a connection of dear friends for life. One of their performances was in Keokuk in 1971 as guests of the Rotary Club. A job change led to the Donnellys moving to Broken Arrow, Okla., in 1971. Bob quickly found a music community, volunteering with several area high school band programs and joining another big band, The Sounds of Music Orchestra. Bob continued playing in The Sounds of Music Orchestra until age 80, when neuropathy in his hands made drumming difficult.
Bob became a manufacturer’s representative, working until age 70. Shortly before he retired, the building of the Creek Turnpike forced the family to leave Broken Arrow and move to Bixby.
Bob had been brought up in the Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Keokuk, and he and Ruth were members of First Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Broken Arrow. Since being placed on hospice, Bob often expressed his regret at no longer being able to attend church.
Bob’s parents; brothers, Joe and David Donnelly; sisters, Dorothy White (Conrad), Ruth Gates Davison (Jim Gates, Bill Davison) and Betty Donnelly; grandsons, Bracken and Adam Ball; and other relatives and many friends pre-deceased him.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth; daughters, Linn Ball (Bill) of Broken Arrow and Denise Hamburger (Terry) of Weatherford, Okla.; son, Bill Donnelly (Gayle) of Bixby; six grandchildren, Jonathan (Shannon) Ball of Atlanta, Ga., Nathaniel Ball of Boulder, Colo., Patrick Ball (Amanda) of New York City, Jacob (Lacy) Hamburger of Weatherford, Ellen Hamburger (fiancé Clay Mol) of Perry, Okla., and Rob Donnelly (Taylor) of Bixby; seven great-grandchildren, Grainger, Thomas and Charlie Ball of Atlanta, Elliott Ball of New York, and Aspen, Jace and Zack Hamburger of Weatherford; nieces, Diana Busst of Huntington Beach, Calif., Kay Staeger of Sammamish, Wash., Laura Hemly (Dean) of Tampa, Fla., and Pat Beck (Ron) of Zionsville, Ind.; nephews, Charles (Violet) Blackford of Brazil, Ind., Rob Blackford of Plainfield, Ind., Steve Gates (Carol) of Keokuk, Randy Davison (Christy) of Broken Arrow and Brendan Donnelly of Honolulu, Hawaii; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and many dear friends.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Family and Friends Funeral Home in Wingate, Ind.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, officiated by Bob’s grandson, the Rev. Jonathan Ball.
Burial will follow in the Masonic Cemetery in Waynetown.
