Ellen Brooks-Ewert, 39, of 107 Landau Ct., Robins, Iowa, formerly of Niles, Michigan, and Seattle, Washington, died Wednesday, 4 December 2002, in her home following an extended illness. Services at 3 PM Saturday in Faith Bible Church in Robins. Pastor Steve Benton will officiate. Additional services and burial on Monday in Niles, Michigan with burial in South Bend, Indiana. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Friday and at the church after 2:30 PM on Saturday.
Survivors include her husband Mark, a daughter Christine of the home, her parents Allen and Barbara Brooks of Niles, Michigan, her three brothers Christopher Brooks of Berrien Springs, Michigan, Dean Livelybrooks of Eugene, Oregon, and Keith Brooks of Osceola, Indiana, her mother-in-law Marge Ewert, a brother-in-law Maynard Ewert, and two sisters-in-law, Starr Starbuck and Karla Batchelor all of Niles, Michigan.
Ellen was born April 7, 1963 in Niles, Michigan to Allen and Barbara Smith Brooks. She married Mark Ewert on September 7, 1985 in Niles, Michigan. She had worked as an x-ray technologist in Seattle, Washington.
A memorial fund has been established.

Carl N. Buxton
Born in Belleview, Missouri on July 11, 1917
Departed on January 6, 2003. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Carl N. Buxton, 85, of 815 C. Ave. N.W., died Monday at St. Luke's Hospital following a lingering illness. Services: 1 p.m. Saturday at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories by Rev. Charles F. Stevens, First Church Of The Open Bible officiating. Interment: Buffalo Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and at the Chapel of Memories after noon on Saturday. A memorial fund has been established.

Survivors include a son, Gary Haster and wife Mary of Cedar Rapids, daughters Joan Klinger and husband Don of Amana, Mary Ann Myer and husband Clyde of West Virginia, Linda Haster of Cedar Rapids and Rebecca Haster of Seattle, brothers, Leroy Banks of Fenton, Missouri and Oscar Banks of Valley Park, Missouri. Also surviving are grandchildren, Mandy Vaughn and Nathan Haster, Stacy Nimo, Michele Wilson, Lisa McIntee, Tammi Aveni, Mignon Boring, Zeth Gardner, very close friend Virginia Phillippe of Cedar Rapids along with 20 great grandchildren and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary, sons, Johnny and David, and sisters, Eula Moore, Marge Blackburn, Edna Williams and Leah Gibson.

Carl was born July 11, 1917 at Belleview, Missouri to Otto and Emma Hastings Buxton and was married to Mary Smrcek on July 10, 1940 at Dubuque, Iowa. She preceded him in death on July 23, 1998.

He had been a lumberjack, worked in the tiff mines and was a steam engine fireman. He retired from being an over the road truck driver with Western Transportation, and was given a safety award for having driven over one million miles without an accident.

He was a member of the First Church Of The Open Bible and was a member of the CCC. He also had served during World War 2 in the U.S. Marines.

He treated everyone generously with kindness and respect. He loved his dear wife Mary and faithfully cared for her during the last years of her illness.

Carl enjoyed playing the harmonica, guitar and singing. Mostly, he enjoyed traveling with his wife and family throughout the United States and exploring the beauty of our land.

He was a strong believer in Christ and was a committed Christian.

Bernice Mae Baldwin

Bernice Mae Baldwin, 92, of Miami, Florida, and a former resident of Cedar Rapids, died Monday at the home of her son and daughter in law, Stephen and Nancy Baldwin, following a brief illness. Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories by Rev. Herbert Isenberg, Westminster Presbyterian Church officiating. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and at the Chapel of Memories after 10 a.m. on Saturday.
Interment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery

Surviving is a son, Stephen and wife Nancy of Miami, Florida, a brother, Robert Wm. Hach and wife Marjorie of Lake McBride, daughter in law, Ruth Baldwin of Nederland, Colorado and 4 grandsons, Kurt, Nathan and wife Molly, Adam and wife Heidi and Ryan.

She was preceded in death by her husband Lester in 1971, a son Nathan in 1993 and parents William and Agnes Hach.

She was born on May 26, 1910 in Cedar Rapids to William and Agnes Broulik Hach and was married to Lester J. Baldwin on August 17, 1935 in Cedar Rapids.

Bernice graduated from Coe College in 1932 and was on the Coe College Conservatory of Music faculty for several years. She continued teaching piano at her home studio for 45 years. She enjoyed her pupils and presented many recitals, including two piano numbers.
She and her husband formed a family orchestra with their two sons that performed for ten years. At that time, Nathan, age 10, played trumpet, Stephen, age 6 played the drums, Lester, the violin and Bernice, piano. They were in demand and played for many functions and programs.

Bernice was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. She served as organist for churches, Eastern Star, Gethsemane Shrine and Daughters of the Nile. She was a 65 year member of the Cedar Chapter of the Eastern Star #184, a 65 year member of Gethsemane Shrine #1, Daughters of the Nile #68, a member of the El Kahir Shrine Auxiliary, a member of the Shrine Women's Club, Czech Heritage Foundation, I F Chapter of P.E.O., Past President of the Beethoven Club, Past President of Delta Zeta Sorority, Past President of Mu Phi Epsilon Music Fraternity, Phi Sigma Iota Romance Language Fraternity, Coe Crescent Honorary Society, Phi Kappa Phi Honorary Fraternity, and the Mortar Board Honorary National Fraternity.

Friends may, if they wish, make memorial contributions to the Czech & Slovak Museum and Library or the Shriner's Cripple Children's Hospital.

Charlene E. Birchmier

Charlene E. Birchmier 77, of 3540 McGowan Blvd, Marion, died Thursday, January 30, 2003 at the Hiawatha Care Center following a short illness. Private services will be held Monday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 2 to 4 PM on Sunday.
Survivors include her husband Charles, two daughters Vonda Birchmier, and Evone Vognsen and husband Dave all of Cedar Rapids, a son David of Portland, Oregon, two grandchildren, Joshua and Maria Vognsen, a sister Maxine Card of Anaheim, California, and twenty three nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Oscar, Herbert, Dick, and Dean, four sisters Rowena Showers, Louise Card, LaVonne Tilden, and Joyce Tarbell.
Charlene was born on March 13, 1925 in Des Moines, Iowa the daughter of Otto and Vena Hudson Gates. On June 9, 1945 she married the Rev. Charles Birchmier in Des Moines. She was a graduate of a Bible College in Des Moines, which is now located in Eugene, Oregon. She also attended Taylor University, Upland, Indiana. After Rev. Birchmier's service as pastor in Indiana for several years, she and her husband returned to Iowa serving in various United Methodist Churches from 1955 thru 1988. In June 1988 they retired from the pastoral ministry. Charlene was very active in these churches serving as a leader in youth work, choir director, and a counselor in Methodist camps at Lake Webster, Indiana, Lake Okoboji, and Clear Lake, Iowa.
She was a member of the United Methodist Women and Circle groups for over 40 years. She was also a member of P.E.O., various literary clubs, and the Book and Craft Club.
Charlene will be greatly missed as a loving wife, a caring mother, and grandmother, and a wonderful homemaker and cook.
A memorial fund has been established.

Merle Allen Brendes
Born in Lowden, Iowa on March 2, 1925

Merle Allen Brendes, 77, of 150 Thompson Dr. SE, died Sunday, February 2, 2003, in Northbrook Manor Care Center following a short illness. Services at 10:30 AM
Wednesday in Eden United Church of Christ. Rev. Dr. Glenn Hunt will officiate. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 4 to 8 PM on Tuesday and at the church after 10 AM on Wednesday.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years Erna, two daughters Donna Hooker and husband Marvin and Tammy Johnson and husband Harlan all of Cedar Rapids, a son Gary Brendes and wife Linda of Amana, seven grandsons, Kevin, Kirk, Kent, and Kory Nanke, Aron and Jason Brendes, and Joshua Johnson, two step-grandsons Nick and Adam Hooker, and a step granddaughter Beth Cowan, nine great-grandchildren, Brandon, Travis, Sara, Melanie, Danielle, Cole, Katharine, and Clay Nanke, and Jacob Brendes,
2 step great-grandchildren Cameron and Megan Hooker, two Aunts, Lillian Brendes of Lowden, and Norma Brendes of Tipton, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Arlene Brendes, a brother Ralph Brendes, a son David Brendes, and a grandson Eric Brendes.
Merle was born March 2, 1925 in Lowden, Iowa to Otto H. and Frieda Dehne Brendes.
He graduated from Lowden High School in 1943. He married Erna J. Horstmann on March 21, 1945 in Clarence, Iowa. He farmed his family farm for 25 years at Lowden. He then worked for Cherry Burrell-Evergreen in Cedar Rapids for 17 years retiring in 1987. After retiring he operated Gramp's Hobby shop. He was a member of Eden United Church of Christ, and United Auto Workers Union Local 1024.
Merle will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Instead of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Eden United Church of Christ or to St. Luke's Hospice.

Faye L. Binger
Born in Waverly, Iowa on January 3, 1927
Departed on February 11, 2003. Resided in Marion, IA.

Faye L. Binger, 76, of 2501 Hwy 13, Marion, formerly of Charles City, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, February 11, 2003 in St. Luke's Hospital following a long illness. Services at 3 PM Saturday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Fran Griffeth will officiate. Entombment in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 4 to 7 PM on Friday and at the chapel after 2:30 PM on Saturday.
Survivors include a daughter Pat Allard and husband Robert of Marion, a son Keith Binger of Irving, Texas, a sister Dixie White of Borger, Texas, and two grandchildren, Chad Allard and wife Amanda of Blairstown, and Kelly Allard and fiance' Kai Stark of Marion. Also survived by a dear friend Ken Sahl of Cedar Rapids. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Faye was born January 3, 1927 in Waverly, Iowa to Leo and Mary Thomas Gray. Faye was a homemaker and had her own cleaning service. She enjoyed collecting Beanie Babies, sewing, crafts, dancing, and knitting.
Faye was a loving mother, grandmother, and friend and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Esther V. Brown
Born in Lafayette on July 31, 1926
Departed on February 20, 2003. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Esther V. Brown, 76, of 1321 O Ave. NE died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003 at Mercy Medical Center after a yearlong struggle with leukemia. Services at 11 AM on Sat. at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Lloyd Brockmeyer will officiate. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Friday.
Survivors include her husband, Dale, of 54 years, two brothers, George Etzel, Harold Etzel and his wife, Vivian, all of Alburnett, and two sisters, Bertha Etzel of Marion and Geraldine Jones of Cedar Rapids. She is also survived by 2 sisters in law, Alice Miller of Cedar Rapids and Nadine Brown of California, nieces and nephews, Kerry Etzel of Coulter, Dennis Etzel and wife, Edna of Alburnett, Tom Jones and wife, Patty of Marion, Jack Brown and wife, Sue of Texas, Joan Barnes and husband, Alf, of Texas and numerous grand nieces and nephews.
Esther was born on July 31, 1926 on the Etzel family farm near Alburnett in the home built by her grandfather. She was born in the same room in which her father was born 107 years ago. She attended a one-room country school near Lafayette through the 8th grade. She later attended business school in Cedar Rapids. She was the assistant treasurer for Russells Guides for 34 years, retiring in 1988. Esther was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. She and Dale spent happy times at the family farm and enjoyed traveling in their motor home, quilting and gardening. A memorial fund has been established in Esther's name.

Cletus Dale Bennett

Cletus Dale Bennett, 61, of 1570 10th Street, Marion, died Saturday, March 1, 2003, in his home following a sudden illness. Services at 1 PM Tuesday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Survivors include his wife Theresa 'Tari', four brothers Lowell Bennett and wife Toni of Antioch, California, Robert Bennett and wife Tootsie of Cedar Rapids, Richard Bennett and wife Pat of Iowa Park, Texas, and Roger Bennett of Lansing, Iowa, three sisters Eva Ryan of Palatine, Illinois, Charlotte Olsen and husband Elmer of Cedar Rapids, and Joan Alexander and husband Kenneth of Brooklyn, Iowa, his uncle Don McMullen of Mercer Island, Washington, 2 brother-in-laws Lee H. Brown and wife Brenda of Black River Falls, Wisconsin, and Bill Brown and wife Gail of Bangor, Wisconsin, 5 sisters-in-law Betty Houle of Odanah, Wisconsin, Kathryn Brown of Wausau, Wisconsin, Ella Bigboy of Schofield, Wisconsin, Beatrice Brown of Saxon, Wisconsin, and Phyllis Tutor and husband Bruce of Odanah, Wisconsin, many nieces, nephews, and cousins, and his two pets, his dog Paul and his cat Precious.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers Forrest, Cleve, and Milton Dean, an infant sister, mother and father in law Lee H. and Elizabeth Brown Sr., and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law Rosemary and Leonard Bigboy. Cletus was born April 21, 1941 in Postville, Iowa to Earl and Vera Monnahan Bennett. He married Theresa 'Tari' Brown on October 26, 1967 in Caledonia, Minnesota. He was a laborer at Longview Fibre for 30 years retiring in 1998. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War.
Memorial contributions may be made to Willow Gardens Care Center in Marion.
