Kathryn L. Beer, 97, of Linn Manor Care Center, died at St. Luke’s Hospital, Thursday, December 4, 2008, after a long illness. Memorial Services: 1 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories by the Rev. Harlan Gillespie of St. Paul United Methodist Church. Inurnment: Center Chapel Cemetery, Keosauqua. Friends may visit after 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Chapel.

Kathryn is survived by her husband, Keith, of 73 years; son, Dean (Gale) Beer of Cedar Rapids; daughter, Bonnie (Don) of Mill Valley, CA; two sisters, Ruth Stansberry of Marion and Mary Bradfield of Van Buren County; brother, Rex Syfert of Keosuqua; six grandchildren, Mike (Karen) Beer, Amy (Brett) Cassabaum, Jenny Seyranian, Andy (Tiffany) Beer, Greg (Jeanette) Seyranian, and Melissa (Brad) Dennis; and ten great grandchildren.

Kathryn was preceded in death by three brothers, Martin, Harold, and Glenn Syfert; a sister, Rita Jefferies; and a great grandson, Christian.

Kathryn was born September 3, 1911 in Bentonsport, Iowa to James and Lilly Syfert. She married Keith Beer in Keosauqua on March 9, 1935. She had many interests including shopping, baking; especially cinnamon rolls and pies; playing cards, and gardening. She loved the Christmas season. Her greatest love was her family. She always remembered her grandchildren and great grandchildren on their birthdays.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Paul United Methodist Church or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Francis J. Brems
Born in DeWitt, Iowa on November 30, 1917
Departed on December 13, 2008. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Service: Wednesday, December 17, 2008
Cemetery: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery
Francis J. Brems: 91, of 519 Teakwood Lane NE, died Saturday evening at his home following a short illness. A funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, December 17, at 10:30 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church with Rev. David O’Connor officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 16 from 4 to 7 p.m. where a vigil service will be held at 6 p.m. Military services will be conducted by VFW Post #788. Friends may, if they wish, donate to All Saints Catholic Church or Camp Courageous in memory of Francis.

Francis is survived by his wife of 63 years, Constance, three sons Jim Brems and wife, Deanna of Cedar Rapids, Robert Brems and wife, Colleen of Iowa City and Tom Brems and wife, Pam of Kennesaw, Georgia. Francis is also survived by six grandchildren, Joseph Brems, Michael Brems and wife, Vicki, and Ryan Brems and wife, Carla all of Cedar Rapids, Jennifer Brems of Kennesaw, Georgia and Matthew Brems and Meghan Brems of Iowa City and four great grandchildren, Frank, A.J., Jaxon, Sophia. Francis was preceded in death by his parents, his brother George Jr. and two grandchildren, Alex and Ryan Brems.

Francis was born November 30, 1917 in DeWitt, Iowa, the son of George and Teresa (McDevitt) Brems. He attended Loras College before entering the Army Air Force in 1941. He married Constance Wiehl on November 23, 1945 at St. Raphael Catherdral in Dubuque. Francis managed Brems Bakery in Cedar Rapids from 1947 to 1957. He worked for the United States Postal Service as a postal clerk from 1957 till his retirement in 1980. Francis was a long time supporter of Loras College. He was a member of All Saints Catholic Church and the VFW Post #788. Francis was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

David Harold Boyle
Born in Sioux City, Iowa on August 1, 1959
Departed on December 17, 2008. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Service: Monday, December 22, 2008
Cemetery: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery
David H. Boyle, 49, of Cedar Rapids, died December 17, 2008 in his home following a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM, Monday, December 22, 2008 at Zion Lutheran Church, Hiawatha. Rev. Daniel Krueger will officiate. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Sunday, December 21, 2008, and at the church after 9:00 AM, Monday. Entombment will immediately follow the service at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife Kari; sons Jacob, Lucas, and Tanner; brothers Richard Boyle and wife Jenny of Sioux City, and Robert Boyle and special friend Quita of So. Sioux City, NE; sisters Karen Clark and husband Jeff of Omaha, NE, and Joleen Killham and husband Dan of Lincoln, NE. Also surviving are nieces and nephews, numerous friends, and extended family members.

Dave wanted to give special recognition to his nephews who are currently serving in the armed forces: Sgt. Raymond Boyle, SSG Aaron Diediker, Sgt. Andrew Diediker and his wife Sgt. Hanna Diediker.

David Harold Boyle was born August 1, 1959 in Sioux City, Iowa the son of Richard and Colene (Heeney) Boyle. He attended school at St. Michaels, and the So. Sioux City Public School System. He later attended Briar Cliff College, and Wayne State College. He was united in marriage to Kari Anne Diediker on July 18, 1987 in So. Sioux City, NE. He was employed in the home health care business for over 20 years, and was most recently a General Manager for American HomePatient. He greatly enjoyed his job and the compassion he was able to share with clients. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. David enjoyed playing golf, was an avid Nebraska Cornhusker’s fan, and above all his greatest enjoyment was the time spent with his family and friends. He was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend who will be greatly missed.

David was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother Joseph Boyle.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the David Boyle Memorial Fund c/o Zion Lutheran Church, 201 1st Ave, Hiawatha, Iowa 42233. It was David’s wishes that the proceeds are directed towards the further education of his children and to Hospice of Mercy.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Hospice of Mercy, especially Kevin Kremer. The heartfelt compassion and care they received was deeply appreciated.

Natalie J. Ballou
Born in Cedar Rapids on April 25, 1929

Natalie J. “Nat’ Ballou, 79, of Living Center East, formerly of 135 Janice Dr. NW., died at Living Center East on Saturday Dec. 20, 2008 after a 30 year battle with M.S.. Services will be at 3:00 PM on Saturday at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Friday.
Survivors include her husband, Earl O.; a daughter, Kathyrn M. “Kat” Ballou (Sid) Hansen of Parkersburg; a son, Rodney D. of Honolulu, Hawaii and a sister Suzanne Schmidt of Cedar Rapids. She is also survived by a grandchild, Sidney M. Hansen. She was preceded in death by her parents, two infant children, William and Patricia, a sister, Kathleen and a brother, Sonny.
Nat was born on April 25, 1929 in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Merton E. and Susan M. Fritz Jenkins. She graduated from McKinley High School where her personal motto was “I shall laugh till I die”. She married Earl O. Ballou on August 30, 1952 in Cedar Rapids. She worked at Kreamers Dept. Store for several years. Nat enjoyed dancing, crafts, arts and was an avid knitter. Memorial donations may be given to Camp Courageous or to your local M.S. Chapter in Nat’s name

Mary E Blocker
Born in Toldeo, Iowa on June 24, 1916
Departed on February 13, 2009. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Mary E. Blocker, 92, of 3523 Stoney Point Road SW, passed away February 13, 2009 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha after a lingering illness. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Matthew Catholic Church on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at 10:00 AM. Rev. Mark Osterhaus will officiate. Visitation will take place from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, on Monday, February 16, 2009 at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, where a vigil service will take place at 6:00 PM. Interment will take place at Blessing Cemetery in rural LaPorte City.

Survivors include her daughter, Marie Sandquist; grandchildren Sandra Nelson, Rita Blessing, and John (Wendi) Gabrielson; as well as 9 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren, 5 step great grandchildren, and 1 step great great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

Mary was born June 24, 1916 in Toledo, Iowa the daughter of Joseph and Katherine (Waterbeck) Machacek. She married Albert Blocker, of Traer, in 1936. He preceded her in death in 1944. Mary moved to Cedar Rapids in 1956 and was employed by Armstrong’s and Killian’s until her retirement. She volunteered at Mercy Hospital for several years. She had made her home with her daughter since 2007. Mary’s greatest joy was helping and doing for other people.

The family is very grateful to Hospice of Mercy for their love and support at this sad time.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hospice of Mercy or to St. Matthew Catholic Church.

Randal Ray DeKlotz
Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on August 10, 1956
Departed on October 6, 2011. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Randal Ray “Randy” DeKlotz, 55, of Cedar Rapids died Thursday October 6, 2011 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha after a courageous battle with cancer. Graveside services at 11:00 AM on Monday at Czech National Cemetery. Rev. Bob Voels will officiate. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral home from 2 to 5 PM on Sunday and after 10:00 AM on Monday.

Survivors include his wife, Kristine, two daughters, a grandson, his parents Kenneth and Barbara of Delhi, brother, David of Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri and a sister Debbie (Dan) Washburn of Marion. He is also survived by his father and mother-in law Mike and Carole Beaton, special friend Wendy Faganel and his beloved Labrador, Rylie.

Randy was born on August 10, 1956 in Cedar Rapids. He graduated from Linn Mar High School in 1974 and from the University of Iowa in 1985. He married Kristine L. Beaton on December 2, 2005 in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Randy worked at Rockwell-Collins and most recently was the sales manager for Maritime Systems. He enjoyed boating at Coralville with family, friends, and was an avid Hawkeye Football fan. Randy loved traveling, especially to the Far East and the Caribbean where he and Kristine would enjoy the island life and scuba diving. Randy was a “Foodie”, loved gourmet dining, great wine as well as having a real zest for life.

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.

“The family would like to thank Dr. Nabi and the staff at Oncology Associates for the wonderful and loving care given to Randy.”

Due to the recent construction, it is required that visitors to Cedar Memorial enter making a right turn from west bound First Avenue (heading toward downtown).
