Ethel L. Cook, 97, a resident of Mercy Hallmar, died there Saturday, December 18, 2004, following a short illness. Services at 3 PM Monday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. William Harnish will officiate. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel after 2 PM on Monday. Following the service her family and friends will gather at the Cedar Memorial Family Center. Arrangements by Cedar Memorial Funeral Home.
Survivors include three daughters, June Cabrnoch and husband Richard of Cedar Rapids, Cathy Stober and husband Michael of Fairfax, and Norma Boetel of Cedar Rapids, three sons Dennis and wife Mardean and Kenneth and wife Neva all of Cedar Rapids, and Ramon and wife Georgia of Irving, Texas, a daughter in law Mary Cook of Cedar Rapids, a sister Helen Kober, of Racine, Wisconsin, 24 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son James, and nine brothers and sisters.
Ethel L. Cook was born October 31, 1907 in Anamosa, Iowa to Charles and Myrtle Potter Barker. She married Ben O. Cook on March 30, 1925 in Lisbon, Iowa. He died August 3, 1988. Ethel was a homemaker and enjoyed cooking and playing cards.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Mercy Medical Center Foundation in Ethel's name

JoAnn M. Clauson
Born in Emery, SD. on April 1, 1935
Departed on May 24, 2005. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Service: Saturday, May 28, 2005

** JoAnn M. Clauson, 70, of 2819 Teresa Dr. SW died Tuesday, May 24, 2005 at her home after a short illness. A Funeral Mass will be at 10 AM on Sat. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Rev. Msgr. Karl Glovik will officiate. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 4 to 8 PM on Friday where there will be a vigil service at 7:45 PM. Friends may also call at the Church after 9 AM on Sat. before the Funeral Mass.
Survivors include her loving children, Greg Kathi Clauson and Mike Clauson all of Cedar Rapids and a daughter, Kathy Bruce Wright and their children, Bruce Jr. and Brittany of Swisher, and an aunt, Katie Wulf of Sioux Falls, SD. She was preceded in death by her parents.
JoAnn was born on April 1, 1935 in Emery, SD., the daughter of William and Mary Murphy. She married Caroll R. Clauson on June 4, 1957 in Sioux Falls, SD. He died in May of 1989. JoAnn was a homemaker and a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. She enjoyed camping, fishing, gardening, bowling and the Iowa Hawkeyes. She also liked taking walks with her dog, Nicklaus and especially loved spending time with her "pride and joy", her two grandchildren. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to the Make A Wish Foundation, the American Heart Association or the charity of the donors choice. A reception will follow the funeral. JoAnn will be dearly missed by her family and many friends.

Russell L. Collins
Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on March 24, 1925
Departed on June 8, 2005. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Dr Russell L. Collins, died Wednesday morning, June 8, 2005 of respiratory complications at St. Luke's hospital. He was 80 years old. There will be a private interment, but friends may pay their respects at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home on Friday from 4 to 7 PM.

Dr. Collins was born on March 24th, 1925 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He married Shirley Ann Patton June 3, 1948 in Cedar Rapids. They were classmates at Coe College where he excelled at both football and track. He graduated from Coe College with a teaching degree in Biology and was also a graduate from the Tuskegee Air Institute as an Army Air Corps fighter pilot. He continued service in the U.S. Air Force until retirement in 1958 when he returned to Cedar Rapids to attend the College of Dentistry at the University of Iowa. He practiced dentistry in Cedar Rapids as well as 24 years at the Men's Reformatory in Anamosa, Iowa, when he retired in 1991.

Dr. Collins was active in many different civic organizations in the Cedar Rapids area, including the Jane Boyd Community House and the NAACP. He was active in the Civil Rights Movement during the 1960's and beyond, and was a frequent speaker on race relations at Linn County High Schools and civic groups. His love of sports made him a frequent spectator at local high school and college events and he was a volunteer kids coach for several sports when younger. He was a member of the American Legion Hanford Post #5.

Surviving Dr. Collins are his wife of 57 years, Shirley, his daughter Imelda, and three sons, Kai of Austin, Texas and Russell and Damien of Cedar Rapids, as well as 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Dr. Collins was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Ardath, a brother, Aubrey and two sisters, Onolea and Ardath.

He will be missed by his death by all that he touched in his life.

Military Rites by the American Legion Hanford Post #5.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Joyce Eileen Corbett
Born in Fairfax, Iowa on February 29, 1928
Departed on September 8, 2005. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Joyce "Joy" Eilleen Kleppe Corbett, 77 passed away suddenly but peacefully of natural causes Thursday, September 8, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. Burial services will be private. A "Celebration of Life" Memorial service will be held at 10 AM Wednesday, September 14, 2005 at the Noelridge Park Gardens by Pastor Glenn Hunt. Turner West Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Joy was a special individual even from birth, choosing to come into the world on Leap Day, February 29, 1928 to Mary Yanacek and Herman Kleppe. She lived all of her life in the Fairfax, Walford, and Cedar Rapids areas. She was valedictorian of her graduating class at Walford High School, past member of the Walford United Methodist Church where she served as Youth Counselor for the Walford Methodist Youth Fellowship.

Joy was married to David H. Corbett from 1951 to 1982. She is survived by her son, Scott Corbett and daughter Julia Gary Kent, all of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Vera Bill Hyland of Des Moines; two brothers, Gordon Shirley Sevig of Walford and Dale Susan Sevig of Eau Claire, WI; and several loving nieces and nephews.

Joy valued her independence above all, but loved sharing special moments with her family and pets. She was an avid birdwatcher and nature lover whose yard was a haven for wildlife. Joy was also a voracious reader, and possessed a beautiful soprano singing voice which will be a wonderful addition to Heaven's choir.

Joy believed that flowers should be enjoyed in their natural state, so in lieu of floral tributes, memorials may be sent to Camp Courageous of Iowa, or the Cedar Valley Humane Society.

Joy loved to laugh, and that sound will be sorely missed.

Carolyn J. Custer
Born on February 28, 1936
Departed on September 8, 2005. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Carolyn J. Custer, 69, of 1501 F. Ave NW, died Thursday, September 8, 2005, in her home following a short illness. Memorial services at 3 PM Saturday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Beverly Thompson-Travis will officiate. Friends may register at the chapel after 2:30 PM on Saturday. Arrangements by Cedar Memorial Funeral Home.
Survivors include her daughter Carol Lynn Perry and husband Anthony of Decatur, Illinois, her son Dennis Dale Custer and wife Jodi of Hiawatha, two grandchildren, Sonya Benda and husband Tim, and Kyle Custer, and two great-grandchildren Taylor and Colton Benda, two brothers John Steyne and wife Helen of Pensacola, Florida, and Daniel Steyne of Cedar Rapids, and five sisters Jackie Gaskill and husband Joe of Oswego, Illinois, Patricia Osweiler and husband Benny of Carlisle, Iowa, Kathryn Peel and husband Jimmy of DeFuniak Springs, Florida, Lynda Walleck of Cedar Rapids, and Leah Fisher and husband Gary of Bella Vista, Arkansas. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters Geraldine Wright and Roberta Milke, and two brother in laws Andy Walleck and John Milke.
Carolyn was born February 28, 1936 in Cedar Rapids to John Arthur and Mayme Blanche Jindrich Steyne.
Carolyn had worked as a cashier for K-Mart in Cedar Rapids for 3 years and had worked in production for Metric Systems Corporation in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida.
She was a member of the Grub Club, and enjoyed attending the Cedar Rapids community concerts. She was an avid yatzee player and also enjoyed playing scrabble.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke's Hospice in Cedar Rapids, or to the American Red Cross for hurricane Katrina relief.

Velma L. Dlouhy
Born in Linn County on March 30, 1938
Departed on July 19, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Velma L. Dlouhy, 72, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday July 19, 2010 at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Services: 10 a.m. Thursday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel by the Rev. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and after 9 a.m. Thursday at the chapel.

Survivors include two sons, Douglas (Cathy) Dlouhy and Daryl Dlouhy; grandchildren, Jason, Alyssa, and Emily Dlouhy; sister Bernice (Milford) Collingwood; a sister-in-law, Helen Barta; and her dog, “Champ”. She was preceded in death by her brother, Elmer Barta; and special friend, Jerome “Rome” Welter.

Velma was born March 30, 1938 in Linn county to Louis and Emily Fisher Barta. She worked for First Trust & Savings Bank for over 38 years. She was a member of the Eagles Club and the National Czech and Slovak Museum. She was an avid Cubs fan and a great cook.

Memorials may be directed to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.

Genevieve Shaffer Divis
Born in Marion, IA. on April 25, 1916

Genevieve Shaffer Divis, 86, of 926 16th Ave SE, died Friday, December 20, 2002, in her home following a short illness. Services at 1 PM Tuesday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Robert Pleiness of the Good News Baptist Church will officiate. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Monday and at the chapel after 12:30 PM on Tuesday.
Survivors include two daughters Bronia Harford and husband Lawrence and Joan Hartson and husband Leland all of Cedar Rapids, a step son Elmer Divis and wife Patricia of Marion, eleven grandchildren, Kathryn, Richard, and Michael Harford, Bradley, Mark, and James Rocarek, Laura Robinson, Kristan Bevins, Cindy Andrews, Shelley Kolosik, and Eric Divis, 22 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a brother Alva Shaffer, a grandson Steven Harford, and a great-granddaughter Tabitha Robinson.
Genevieve was born April 25, 1916 in Marion to John and Lulu Andrews Shaffer. She attended old Washington High School. She married John W. Divis on June 21, 1937 in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He died January 10, 1982. She and worked for Wilson's and as a cook and bartender at Seb's Tavern-Mac's Lounge. She enjoyed bird watching especially Cardinals. She loved gardening and her dogs.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Diabetes Association, or to Hospice of Mercy.
