James H. Day
Born in Cedar Rapids, IA. on July 23, 1923
Departed on January 12, 2004. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Visitation: Wednesday, December 31, 1969
Service: Friday, January 16, 2004
James H. Day, 80, of 150 Thompson Drive SE, died Monday in St. Luke's Hospital.

Friends are invited to join his family in celebrating his life at a memorial service Friday, January 16, at 1 o'clock in the Clark Alumni House at Coe College. Arrangements are with the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Elinor; three sons, James H. Day, Jr., and his wife, Janice, of St. Paul, Minnesota; Jonathan C. Day and Joy, of Marion, and Thomas A. Day and Laurel, of Hiawatha; a daughter, Ann Freeman and her husband, Jeff; and eight grandchildren: Owen and Grace Hearty, James Farrell Day, Kenyon and Brennan Day, Janey and Kate Day, and Andrew Freeman.

Jim was born July 23, 1923, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Burton Hoyt Day and Ruth Hardwick Day, who were also life-long residents of this community. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1941. His Franklin classmates have always meant a great deal to him, and he enjoyed helping to plan their reunions.

He enrolled in Coe College in the fall of 1941. Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the Army's ASTP Army Specialized Training Program with other men from Coe. Called up in 1943, he was sent to Camp Cook, California, and later to Stanford University and University of California at Berkely as a student.

By the summer of 1944, in anticipation of replacement needs, the Army had drastically cut the program and placed most of the men in rifle companies. Jim was assigned to the 11th Armored Infantry Division, which participated in the 'Ardennes Endeavor' of the Battle of the Bulge, losing nearly half its men during its 96 days in combat beginning in December 1944. That division relieved the Fourth Infantry Division after it had taken Bologne. The Fourth Infantry Division had replaced each of its men three times.

On January 5, 1945, Jim was taken to a field hospital by ambulance for treatment of frozen feet. On January 5, 2004, when he was taken by ambulance to St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, he noted that anniversary date.

Jim was always quietly proud to have been a member of 'The Greatest Generation.' He had a highly developed sense of honor and duty, and was a person of great integrity.

Following the war, he returned to Coe and graduated in 1948. He then went into the restaurant equipment business, The Day Company, which his father had started during the Depression, and where Jim had 'helped out' from about the time he was nine or 10.

In his retirement, Jim was an avid reader and enjoyed studying the stock market and working with his stamp collection. He took great pleasure in having lunch or dinner with good friends, telling jokes, and reminiscing about 'old-times.' He loved British television comedies, 1940s jazz and Big Band music, slapstick comedy, goldfinches and cardinals, and the Chicago Cubs. His greatest joy, however, was always his family, and he delighted in his grandchildren, who now range in age from 15 years to five months.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that friends may, if they wish, make a contribution to Coe College in Jim's memory.

William B. Harnish. Inurnment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4-7 p.m. and after 10:00 a.m. at the chapel on Saturday.
Survivors include three children, Nancy Royce Baker of Hiawatha, Karl Cheryl Clendening III of Roanoke, Virginia; and Gary Kathy Clendening of Boulder, Co; eight grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband Karl on April 12, 2004; a daughter Barbara on June 24, 1992; and a sister Mary.
Helen was born June 16, 1911 in Chicago, Illinois to Harry Earl and Julia McIntyre Yearick. She grew up in Chicago and married George Ottersen. They had two daughters Nancy and Barbara. She was divorced and moved with her children to her parents home town, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She then met the love of her life, Karl Clendening Jr and on September 23, 1939 they were married. They had two sons; Karl III and Gary. Karl adopted both Nancy and Barbara.
Helen loved life and laughter. She especially loved her family and friends. She was active in the schools PTA programs and was a Cub Scout Leader. From childhood on, her favorite thing to do was to have a picnic in the park where family and friends would gather together. She was an excellent cook, and her house was always beautifully decorated and clean. Her sewing machine was always busy with mending, creating clothes for her family, making elaborate costumes for parties, drapes for her window, and slip covers for her furniture. She played all kinds of card games, but Bridge was her favorite. She belonged to one bridge club for over 60 years. She enjoyed fishing and never came home empty handed. Her hands were always busy with painting pictures, needlepoint or crocheting. She supplied all her relatives and many friends with afghan. She and Karl traveled all over the United States in their trailer and took the time to visit all places of interest. If they took the wrong road while traveling, she'd smile and call it "adventure". She loved to tell a good joke and always had one ready for a friend, or at a meeting. There wasn't much she couldn't do when she pet her mind to it.
We, her children, have been blessed to have had her as our Mother and Friend for so many years. We know she was tired after a full life of 97 years and she wanted to be reunited with her loving husband Karl and her beloved daughter Barbara. We will never forget the unconditional love she gave to all of us. We will proudly and lovingly hold her in our hearts forever.
