Stephen P. Cope, 59, of 3345 Stone View Circle SW, died Saturday November 29, 2008 in St. Luke’s Hospital following a sudden illness. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday December 3, at King of Kings Lutheran Church, where visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. until service time. The Rev. Mark Halvorson will officiate. Inurnment: Private at St. John Lutheran Cemetery, Newhall. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include wife, Judy, his children, Amy (Jerry) Wright of Cedar Rapids, Jamie (Tim) Cope of West Des Moines, Step-daughter, Diana (Daniel) Slaughter of Wausau, Wisconsin, a brother, Richard (Susan) Cope of Marshalltown, a sister, Pamela (Ronald) Bane of Marshalltown, 3 grandchildren, Joshua Wright, Donovan Young, Jordyn Butler, many nieces and nephews and his beloved dog, Penny.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Michael Cope.
Stephen was born October 8, 1949 in Marshalltown, the son of Walter and Berta (Kline) Cope. He married
Judy Koopman on August 16, 1980 in the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Stephen graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1977 and also took graduate courses at Iowa State University in 1974. He was a Information Technologist and Trainer. He worked for Norand, The Gazette and ACT. He enjoyed computer games, astronomy, music and reading. He was a friend of Bill W. He served in the U. S. Army during Vietnam from 1968 to 1969. He was a member of First Cavalry Division and received many medals for service during his Tour of Duty

Mary E. Carfrae

Mary E. Carfrae: 86, of 1720 Applewood Place NE, passed away peacefully Sunday afternoon, November 30 at Mercy Medical Center following a short illness. A funeral Mass will be held Thursday December 4 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Matthews Catholic Church with Rev. Mark Osterhaus officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday, December 3 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home where a prayer service will be at held at 4 p.m.
Mary is survived by two sons, Steven (Joanne) Carfrae and Thomas (Kathy) Carfrae of Cedar Rapids and a daughter, Caroline (Eurtly) Parker of Ely, Iowa and six grandchildren, Sarah (Joe) Shevlin of Chicago, Matt (Bick) Carfrae of Des Moines, Nick (Holly) Carfrae, Abbey (Matt) Swenson all of Cedar Rapids, Ryan (Becky) Moffitt of Coralville and Tim Moffitt of Nashville, TN, and six great grandchildren, Owen, Jack, James Shevlin, Laila and Charli Carfrae and Lily Carfrae and a brother, John Hiegel of San Diego, CA.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Carfrae on April 19, 2008, a son James Carfrae and her parents.
Mary was born August 16, 1922 to Charles and Grace Hiegel in Davenport, Iowa. As a young child, the family moved to Cedar Rapids where Mary attended Immaculate Conception School, Franklin High School and Mount Mercy Academy. She married
Jack J. Carfrae on May 16, 1943 in Seattle, Washington. When Jack returned from the war, they set up house in Cedar Rapids. Mary was a stay at home mom until 1960 when Jack and Mary decided to open their meat processing business, Carfrae Meat Company. Mary helped Jack any way she could, but she always made sure she was there for the children. She took great pleasure in watching her grandchildren grow up to be young adults. She cherished every moment she could spend with the great grandchildren.
Mary was a wonderful cook, using simple ingredients making a delicious meal. She thoroughly enjoyed reading cookbooks and trying new recipes. Mary was a long time member of St. Matthews Catholic Church and St. Bernadette’s Circle.
The family thanks Dr. Gray, Dr. Ghosh and Mercy Medical Center for the care given to mom.
In memory of Mary, memorials may be made to Camp Courageous or St. Matthews Renovate and Renew Project.
Myrna V. DeJarnette
Born in New Market, Missouri on February 14, 1911
Departed on May 6, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Myrna V. DeJarnette, 99, of 360 17th St. SE, died Thursday, May 6, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center after a short illness. According to her wishes, her body was cremated. Her ashes to be buried beside her beloved husband in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later date with Rev. Tammy Buseman of First Baptist Church-Church of the Brethren officiating.
Survivors include two nephews, Thomas Ackerman (wife, Paula and children, Caitlin and Alex) of Mendecito, California and Gerald Ackerman (wife Eva) of Canyon Country, California. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Hilda Hansen, Vern Runyan, Margaret Ackerman and Jimmie Pumphrey; brother, Kenneth Pumphrey and her dearly beloved husband, Henry.
Myrna was born of February 14, 1911, the daughter of Edgar and Sadie (Hatfield) Pumphrey in New Market, Missouri. Myrna was a member of First Baptist Church-Church of the Brethren and 42nd Rainbow Division Vets Association Auxiliary.
Myrna along with her siblings enjoyed happy childhoods in Weston and Kansas City, Missouri and Nebraska City, Nebraska. She graduated from Nebraska City High School in 1929 and moved with her family to Cedar Rapids in the early 1930s. Myrna married
Henry DeJarnette in 1969. He died in 1997 after a long and happy marriage.
Myrna’s first job was with Midland Mortgage and later worked for F.E. Corey, patent attorney who in 1939 formed Pickwick Company. She was employed by F.E. Corey and his son Walter at Pickwick for over 50 years, retiring in 1999.
Her life span of nearly a century covered The Great Depression, five wars, and numerous stages of industrialization up to and including the computer age thus far.
Myrna leaves this planet not with reluctance but with the anticipation of joining her family and her beloved husband, Henry. Myrna will be greatly missed by her friends, especially her dear friend and care taker, Donna Fults and her family.
Memorial donations may be given to the charity of the donor’s choice.

John W. Collins, 93, of Living Center West died there on Saturday Dec. 6, 2008 after a short illness. Services at 1:00 PM on Wednesday at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories where there will also be military rites. Entombment at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5 to 7 PM on Tuesday.
Survivors include his wife, JoEtta, and a sister, Evelyn Reed of Cedar Rapids. He is also survived by 3 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, James William, John W. III, a daughter, Joyce Elaine and one great grandson, Jaylen.
John was born on June 23, 1915 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of Rev. John and Anna Curry Collins. He graduated from Old Washington High School in 1934. He married
JoEtta Price on Aug. 30, 1943 in St. Louis, Missouri. They moved to Cedar Rapids in 1945 and lived in the same house until the flood of 2008. He spent almost all of his working days in federal service, starting with the Rock Island Arsenal, then the Army followed by the Cedar Rapids Post Office and ending with the federal court as a Bailiff, retiring in 1972.
He had been a member of the Mayor’s Ad Hoc Committee on storm sewers, a member of Churches United Board of Directors, Choir Selective Service Board, Trustee and Choir Director of Bethel A.M.E. Church. While in retirement he was a part-time staff worker at Jane Boyd Community House.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to Bethel A.M.E. in John’s name.
Betty Jo Crooks
Born in Boyd County, Kentucky on December 28, 1934

Betty Jo Crooks, 74, of 624 – 26th Street NW, died peacefully at her home, surrounded by her family, Monday, February 23, 2009. Services: 11 a.m. Friday at The First Church of The Open Bible by the Rev. Dan Sanford. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel and after 10 a.m. Friday at the church.
Survivors include her children, Robin (Mark) Ortgies, Kenny (Anita) Crooks, Shari (David) Gish, all of Cedar Rapids; brother, Henry (Aline) Houck of Cedar Rapids; sisters, Libby Shelby, Kay Bailey, and Evelyn “Bill” Wheeler, all of Ashland, KY; grandchildren, Trenton, Matthew, Michael, Elizabeth (Vince), John (Nikki), Cash, Trevor (Megan), Blake (Shayla), Shantell, and Kendon; and six great grandchildren.
Betty Jo was preceded in death by her husband John and sisters, Lucille, Mary, and Emma.
Betty Jo was born on December 28, 1934 in Boyd County, Kentucky to John and Goldie Houck. She married
John Crooks on January 28, 1955 in Anamosa. He died in 1983. Betty Jo loved children and was a day care provider from 1963 to 2000. She cared for over 50 children during that time. She was a faithful member of the First Church of The Open Bible. Betty Jo lived for her family and will be remembered for her wisdom and unconditional love.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Schroeder, Dr. Ghosh, the Iowa Blood and Cancer Center, and the special St. Luke’s Hospice staff, Michelle, Linda, Lolly, Peggy, and Lorrie for the loving care given to Betty Jo.

Shirley Ann Dickens
Born in Albany, MO on July 7, 1940
Departed on April 3, 2010. Resided in Hiawatha, Iowa.
Shirley Ann Dickens, 69, of Marion passed away on Saturday, April 3, 2010 at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. Rev. Carol Sundberg will officiate with inurnment in St. Paul’s United Methodist Church Columbarium.
Survivors include her husband James W. Dickens of Marion; daughter Lisa (Todd) Foley Luker of Clear Lake; step-children Jenniffer Dickens of Marion and James (Wendy) Dickens of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren Hadley and Henry Luker of Clear Lake; step-grandchildren Gabriel and James Dickens of Cedar Rapids; sisters Joyce Brown of Kansas City, MO and Dorothy Lange of St. Joseph, MO and a nephew Jerry Lange of St. Joseph, MO.
She was preceded in death by her parents Curtis and Lucille Evans.
Shirley was born July 7, 1940 in Albany, MO the daughter of Curtis and Lucille (Cutts) Evans. She married
James William Dickens on July 27, 1981 in Cedar Rapids at the Asbury United Methodist Church. She was previously married
to Robert Foley divorcing in 1978. She was employed with the Square D Company in Cedar Rapids for 10 years and for Allstate Insurance Company in Lexington, KY for 10 years.
Shirley was a member of the St. Paul’s Untied Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids, and the Kum Disciples Sunday School Class at the church. She enjoyed bird watching, traveling in the motor home to Florida in early spring so she could get an early start on warm weather, and visiting and eating out with her family and friends.
