Ricky L. Clark, 49, of 514 18th Street SE, died Thursday, March 19, 2009, at University Hospital in Iowa City of complications from a transplant. Services will be held at 11 AM Wednesday in Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. Rufus Johnson will officiate. Additional services and burial will be held in Huntington, Tennessee. Visitation will be from 2 to 7 PM Tuesday in Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home and at the chapel after 10 AM on Wednesday

He leaves to cherish his memory, Cassandra Gibson, two children, daughter Arielle and son Zachary Gibson, two sisters Patricia (George) Colbert of Mesa, Arizona, and Ginger Hamilton-Roach of Lavinia, Tenn, a brother Robert Hamilton Jr. of Independence, Iowa, Aunt Dorothy Clark of Lavinia, Tenn., two uncles Ozie Clark of Lavinia, Tenn., and Frank Clark of Fulton, Kentucky, nieces, Crystal Roach, Bridgette Johnson, Cedar Rapids, IA., Candace Williams and Cyera Reeves, and nephews Donta Colbert, Mesa, Arizona, David Roach Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Austin Williams, a great nephew Keenan Backstrom, and a host of cousins, friends, and acquaintances. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Ethel Clark Hamilton.

Ricky was born June 17, 1959 in Milan, Tennessee. He was employed by International Paper for many years. He was a member of the I.A.M. Local 831 Union. He enjoyed barbequing and being with his family. Ricky was a devoted father, kind hearted, and touched many people in a very special way. He will be missed dearly by those who knew him.

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for the family.

Melvin J. Coppock
Born in Lisbon, Iowa on July 24, 1926
Departed on March 30, 2009. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Melvin J. Coppock, 82, of 2654 Rainier Ct. NE, died Monday morning, March 30, 2009, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, following an extended illness. Services will be held at 10:30 AM Friday at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Rev. Donald Klein will officiate. A reception will follow at the church. Graveside services and entombment at 1:30 PM in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4 to 7 PM on Thursday with a Rosary beginning at 6:30 PM.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Helen Coppock; two sons Mark (Mary) and Loren (Patti) both of Cedar Rapids; two daughters Marsha (Herb) Plimpton of Hillsborough, CA, and Julie (Jim) Stepanek of Cedar Rapids; a twin sister, Marilyn (Ed) Carpenter of Urbandale, Iowa; 10 grandchildren: John Coppock, Kate Middleton, Ryan and Sean Hallerud, Trisha McClure, Michelle and Peter Stepanek, Kevin and Michael Doyle, and Jennie Benke; and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother Myron and his wife Marion.

Melvin was born July 24, 1926, in Lisbon, Iowa, the son of Irwin and Isabel (Willson) Coppock. He was a 1945 graduate of Mt. Vernon High School. He enlisted in the US Air Force in 1944 and served in the Pacific. He married Helen Hartin on June 22, 1947, in Cedar Rapids.

Melvin was employed by Dows Dairy for 26 years and Erusha Realtors for several years thereafter. He and Helen owned a number of local apartment buildings for 46 years, until their retirement in 1998. He was a faithful member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

We will remember him for his smile and his quiet and humble disposition. He was a loving Husband, Father and Grandfather.

The family wishes to thank the Mercy Hospice House Staff and caregivers for their dedicated care of Melvin.

Memorials may be made in his honor to the Dennis and Donna Hospice House of Mercy, or to St. Pius X Catholic Church.

Rebecca Darland
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio on December 24, 1959

Rebecca L. “”Becki” Darland, 49, of 8725 Deer Crest Dr. NE. died Sunday Feb. 8, 2009 at St. Luke’s Hospital after a short illness. Services at 11:00 AM on Wednesday at the Oakland Church of the Nazarene. Rev. Dr. Dan Casey and Rev. Dave King will officiate. Entombment at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 6 to 8 PM on Tuesday and at the Church after 10 AM on Wednesday.

Survivors include her husband, Tim, their daughter, Jessica at home, two sisters, Dinah (Fred) Huff of Tijeras, New Mexico and Jenni (Dave) Knippers of Bethany, Oklahoma. She is also survived by two nephews, Captain Shane Huff of Tampa, Florida and Allen (Hilary) Knippers of Yukon, Oklahoma; two nieces Jaime (Jon) Huff Swarner of Covington, Georgia, Amy Knippers of Bethany, Oklahoma, and a great niece and nephew, Helen and Simon Huff. She was preceded in death by her parents and her baby sister, Jacquelyn Lee.

Becki was born on Dec. 24. 1959 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the daughter of Reverend Dr. Jack and Ouida Waldrop Lee, and grew up in Decatur, Georgia. Becki was involved in her Church, Oakland Church of the Nazarene, as a school volunteer and in her community. Becki loved to travel and spend time with her family. She will be missed by all of her family and friends. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to the Rebecca Lee Darland Scholarship Fund.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff and doctors of St. Luke's Hospital for the care and compassion they provided to Becki and her family.

Mary Grace Collins
Born in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico on June 9, 1942
Departed on April 23, 2009. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Mary Grace Collins, 67, of Cedar Rapids, died at her home, Thursday, April 23, 2009, following a yearlong courageous fight with cancer. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, April 27, 2009 at Saint Pius X Catholic Church, 4949 Council St SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52402. Friends may call from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Sunday, April 26, 2009 at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, where a vigil service will take place at 4:00 PM. Per Grace’s wishes, the casket will remain closed at all times. Burial will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

Grace is survived and cherished by her husband, Roger; daughter, Melenie (Brian) Grimm and their newly born daughter Elena Graciela; son, Steve; and son, Jason, all of Cedar Rapids. She is also survived by her five sisters; Martha (Daniel) Escalante, Eugenia (Eduardo) Rodriguez, Olivia (Alfonso) Hernandez, Lucero (Moises) Munoz, Rocio (Arturo) Zacarias; her four brothers, Francisco (Betti) Cervantes, Luis Carlos (Mati) Cervantes, Jesus (Alejandra) Cervantes and Guillermo (Veronica) Cervantes. Her siblings live in Mexico, with the exception of her brother Francisco, who lives in Grand Junction, Colorado.

Grace was preceded in death by her parents, older brother, Gilberto Cervantes, and younger sister, Maria Auxilio.

Maria Graciela Cervantes was born, June 9th, 1942, in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico, to Luis and Inez (Pena) Cervantes. She joined the Cordi Marian Sisters in 1956 and soon moved to San Antonio, Texas, to support the order’s missionary efforts. She became Mary Grace Cervantes as a U.S. naturalized citizen in 1970, moved to Iowa in 1972 to attend the University of Iowa. In her first year at Iowa, she meet Roger L Collins, a native Iowan, was engaged in 1973, and the Sacrament of Marriage was celebrated between her and Roger in Leon on June 9th, 1974. Grace graduated from the University of Iowa, College of Nursing, in 1975 with a BS degree in Nursing and went on to work for the University of Iowa Hospital as a staff nurse for almost five years. In 1980, Grace took a position as a staff nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital and soon transferred to the obstetrics floor. In 1994, she met the rigid requirements and demonstrated the special knowledge to be NCC certified as a maternal newborn nurse, RNC.

Grace truly loved patient care; especially the interaction with the families to provide care for newborn babies. She was cited numerous times by her managers, co-workers, and patients as she provided excellent care, often going beyond the usual duties to ensure the mom’s and baby’s new life together began well. She retired in 2007 after serving as a Registered Nurse for 33 years. She had worked long enough to become a grandmother in nursing many times over as the children she had helped start their lives were returning to have their own children.

The passions of Grace’s life were her family, friends, and the care of her patients. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend. Her family raised her to be a devoted Catholic and she was a member of Saint Pius X Catholic Church for 30 years. She took great pleasure in sharing her abilities to cook, sew, and decorating of all types as part of the fellowship she shared with her family and many friends. Grace enjoyed the care of her backyard flower garden and potted plants. She loved the family cat, Kisses, and cared for several grand cats. She had the wonderful ability to tell long detailed stories to provide life lessons and instruction. Grace greatly enjoyed family travel to have new experiences, to go to new places, and to meet new people. She lived her life to enjoy every day, to face new experiences without fear, and to focus on what really matters in life.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Chirantan Gosh, the staff of the Cancer Care team at St. Luke's Hospital and the St. Luke's Hospice team for their exceptional care, compassion, guidance, and support. All of these health care professionals provided Grace and the family with extraordinary care.

If desired, memorials may be directed to St. Luke's Hospice or any charity of choice in lieu of flowers

Floyd L. Cordes
Born in Guernsey on October 12, 1928

Floyd L. “Hooker” Cordes, 80, of 348 – 26th Street NW, died Saturday, April 25, 2009, at University of Iowa Hospital. Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at Trinity Lutheran Church by the Rev. Jonathan Offt. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery with military services by the VFW Post #788. A visitation will be held at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel, Monday, from 4 to 8 p.m. and after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Hooker is survived by many nieces and nephews, LeAnn Wigant, Jolene Jensen, Kathy, Paul, and Larry Rose, Geraldine Taylor, Delbert Bahr, Faye Brown, Rose Ellen McAdam, Georgia Dettman, Mickey Campbell, Sharon Roegge, and Ron Emal; several great nieces and great nephews; a host of special friends; and his “girls”, Sara and Midge. He was preceded in death by his wife Merna in 1992; brother, Ronald; and sister, Margaret Hartman.

Hooker was born on October 12, 1928 in Guernsey and married Merna Rose on October 10, 1956 in Moline, IL. He worked for several companies and most recently was employed by FMC, retiring in 1996. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and Past Commander of VFW Post #788 and second district commander VFW, State of Iowa. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Hooker loved to work in his shop, rebuilding equipment.

Memorials may be directed to Camp Courageous or Trinity Lutheran Church.

Patrick M. Coghlan
Born in Cedar Rapids, IA on November 8, 1943
Departed on April 28, 2009. Resided in Morrison, IL.

Patrick M. “Rooster” Coghlan, 65, of Morrison, Illinois, formerly of the Solon area, passed away on April 28, 2009 following a long illness. Pat was born to E. Max and Clarice (Ross) Coghlan in Cedar Rapids on November 8, 1943.

He is survived by a daughter, Becky (Ed) Johnson of Cedar Rapids, and two sons, Brad (Mary) Moyer of St. Paul, MN and Scott (Sherry) Coghlan of Loveland, CO, a brother Daniel Coghlan and a sister Karen Flint, both of Cedar Rapids. He has nine grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a great granddaughter.

Pat retired from Local Union 81 Heat and Frost Insulators after thirty six years of service. He lived in Morrison, Illinois for the past 17 years, where he had many friends.

Visitation will be on Thursday April 30th, 2009 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Services will be held at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories on Friday May 1st, 2009 at 3:00 PM.
