Joan C. Carpenter, 87, of 2115 1st Ave. SE died there on Monday May 4, 2009. A memorial celebration will be at 11:00 AM on Friday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Inurnment at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, John, a son, John L. of Alisa Viejo, California; two daughters, Susan (Hal) Hellentall of Cedar Rapids and Anita Lambert of Amana; a sister, Mary Edgerton of Richmond, Virginia and two brothers, Jack Gearing of LaBlanc, Michigan and William (Mimi) Gearing of Highland Park, Illinois. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Jeanne Sheehan of Trout Lake, Michigan. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Joan was born on October 3, 1921 in St. Clair, Michigan, the daughter of Milton and Inez Jones Gearing. She received her masters degree in education from the University of Michigan. She married
John R. Carpenter on Aug. 19, 1949 in St. Clair, Michigan. Joan was a homemaker, enjoyed tennis, and started playing racquetball at the age of 82. She was a devoted and life long member of the First Church of Christ Scientist.
Joan was a wonderful person; loving, caring, compassionate and an example for everyone to follow. She will be greatly missed by her many friends and loving family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the charity of the donor’s choice. The family would like to thank the staff at Cottage Grove Health Center and Amenity Hospice for the wonderful care given to Joan. There will be a gathering and lunch at Cottage Grove Place from Noon until 2:00 PM on Friday.

Delorise L. Derby, 76, of Crestview Acres in Marion died Wednesday March 10, 2010 at St. Lukes Hospital after a brief illness. Graveside services at 11:00 AM on Friday at the Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 9 until service time on Friday.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia (Matt) Lubbock of Marion and a son Ray Jr. of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Jodie (Melvin) Aiken of Kansas and a brother, Everett (Linda) Young of Marion. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Kerrie, Tracie, Scott, Ricky, Mikayla, Hailey and Dallas; seven great grandchildren, Kyle, Britini, Hunter, Lucas, Oliver, Parker and Kira. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a daughter, Carol Derby, a sister, Dorothy Cox and two brothers, Don and David Young.
Delorise was born on January 8, 1934 in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of C. Vincent and Grace Kelly Young. She married
Raymond R. Derby on June 9, 1951 in Iowa City. He died in 2006. Delorise was a homemaker. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
A memorial fund has been established in Delorise’s name.
Gary Burton Craven

Gary B. Craven, 72, of Cedar Rapids, died June 6, 2009 at St. Luke’s Hospital following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 11, 2009 at Christ Episcopal Church. Rev. Martha Rogers and Rev. Barbara Schlachter will officiate. Friends may call from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Surviving are his wife Mary; sons Michael and wife Suzan of Brighton, CO, Bryan of Calgary, Canada, and Aaron and wife Dana of Rosemount, MN; grandchildren Erika, John, and Kaden; great grand child Carson; brothers and sisters Kathryn, Jean, Clifford, Ron, Dee, Karen, Connie, and Neil; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, David, Rollie, and Charles.
Gary Burton Craven was born March 26, 1937 in Gentry County, Missouri, the son of Clifford and Neva (Wilkinson) Craven. He served his country honorably in the United States Army as a helicopter pilot. He was united in marriage to Mary Meyer on June 29, 1974 in Richfield, MN. He was employed at various jobs throughout his career, his last job being as a manager at Firestone Tires. He was a member of AM Vets, and Christ Episcopal Church. He enjoyed building and working with computers, and greatly enjoyed flying planes. Most of all, his greatest enjoyment was the time he was able to spend with his family whom he dearly loved.

Marshall LeRoy Clossen, 89, of Maquoketa, Iowa, formerly of Marion, died Wednesday, June 10, 2009, in the Genesis West Hospital in Davenport, Iowa, following a short illness. Memorial services will be held at 1 PM Sunday at the First United Methodist Church in Maquoketa. Visitation with the family will be from 4 to 7 PM on Monday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, and at the chapel after 10:30 AM on Tuesday. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Tuesday in Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories in Cedar Rapids. Rev. Jeff Dadisman will officiate. Entombment with military honors will be in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Surviving to honor his memory are his wife of 67 years Frances, a son Steven (Brenda) Clossen of Maquoketa, three daughters Cynthia (Jim) Cox of Cedar Rapids, Connie (Don) Freytag of Marion, and Catherine (Henry) Hansen of Pt. Charlotte, Florida, nine grandchildren, Matt and Christopher Stookey, Lee and Eric Hansen, Jason Steffens, Elizabeth Molitor, Justin, Bryan, and Caitlin Clossen, and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Mildred Clossen, and a brother John.
Marshall was born February 14, 1920 in Ollie, Iowa. He married
Frances Wiggins on February 1, 1942 in Memphis, Missouri. He was drafted into the Army March 19, 1942, and served with the 358th Medical detachment, 90th Division, Third Army, in the invasion of Normandy beach during WW II. He was a member of the Marion American Legion Post No 298. He enjoyed crafting, camping, square dancing, and traveling after his retirement.

Helen Faye Curry
Born in Humansville, Missouri on May 29, 1919
Departed on September 20, 2009. Resided in Mt. Vernon, Iowa.
Helen “Faye” Curry, 90, of Cedar Rapids passed away on Sunday, September 20, 2009 at the Hallmark Care Center in Mt. Vernon. Per Faye’s wishes her body has been cremated. Private family services are pending with Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Survivors include her son Danny (Sue) Curry of Lomita, CA; two daughters, Roxy (Robert) Draker, and Candy (Ed) Horn both of Cedar Rapids. She is also survived by six grandchildren and four great grandchildren; and a sister Peg Wilson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband W.F. “Dan” Curry; and an infant daughter Christy Ann.
Helen Faye Umphenour was born May 29, 1919 in Humansville, MO the daughter of Roy and Maude (Stewart) Umphenour. She marred W.F. “Dan” Curry on April 6, 1940 in Muscatine, IA. Dan passed away on April 26, 2003. Faye was employed with Rockwell Collins before her retirement in 1981. She was a member of the Cedar Rapids St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.

Jeanette Cecil

Jeanette Cecil, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, October 20, 2009, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Inurnment: Hollansburg Cemetery, Hollansburg, OH. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
Survivors include children, Col. David (Helen) Sarver of Spokane, WA, Michael (Margi) Sarver of Newport Coast, CA, and Carol Trask of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Karen Via of Marathon, WI; and five grandchildren, Robert and Megan Sarver, Michael, Kelly and Ian Trask; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Norman and Edith Irelan; a brother, Richard Irelan; and sister, Shirley Long.
Jeanette was born October 26, 1931 at home in Hollansburg, OH. Although she only had a high school education, she rose to be the Vice President of Trust at Key Bank in Dayton, OH, retiring in 1996. Jeanette was an avid reader, sometimes reading several books a week. She belonged to several card groups and the Red Hat Society. She loved traveling throughout the United States and Europe, especially to visit with her children and grandchildren. In recent years, she volunteered at Mercy Medical Center.

Erwin Leroy Clinton Jr.

Erwin Leroy Clinton Jr. (Bubba), of 230 South Cedar St. in Monticello formerly of Cedar Rapids died Friday Oct. 23, 2009 at St. Lukes Hospital after a lingering illness. Memorial services at 1:00 PM on Tuesday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories where there will also be military rites. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Monday.
Survivors include his wife, Janet, a son Craig (Vickie) of Marion, four daughters, Tina (Randy) Maher of Cedar Rapids, Cecelia “Sherry” Hill of Anamosa, Angela (Rob) Basta of Florida and Cassandra (Rick) Covington of Monticello; a step-daughter, Shelly (Tim) Brown and step-son, Jamie Turpin all of Cedar Rapids; five brothers, Eddie (Audrey) of Texas, Allen (Iva) of Norway, Iowa, Bill(Pam), Bobby (Kay) and Jim (Janie) all of Cedar Rapids; three sisters, Carol Sawyer of Marion, Barb (David) Hearron and Kathy (Richard) Ballew all of Cedar Rapids. He is also survived by fifteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Sherry Werner, Rosalee Bryan and Elaine Meyers and his former wife, Mary B. Nugent Clinton.
Erwin was born on June 5, 1938 in Iowa City, the son of Erwin and Ruth Sadler Clinton Sr. Erwin was a career Navy man who served from 1955 until 1977. He retired as an E-8 and proudly served in Vietnam. After his retirement from the Navy he worked for the city of Cedar Rapids Parks Dept. in maintenance from 1977 until he retired in 1997.
Erwin was a member of American Legion Hanford Post No. 5 and VFW Post No. 788. He enjoyed working crossword puzzles, fishing, playing cards and especially spending time with his friends and beloved family.
