Marjory E. “Marj” Crane, 83, of 606 18th St. SE died Saturday October 23, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center. Services at 11:00 AM on Wednesday at First Lutheran Church. Rev. Dr. Kay Slocum will officiate. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Tuesday and at the Church after 10:00 AM on Wednesday.

Survivors include her husband, Carl, daughter, Carol Seng of Hiawatha ; a son Don (Barb) of Cedar Rapids, daughters Lisa (Dan) Ripley of Hiawatha, Sharon (Eric) Deitz of Davenport, Nancy (Joe) Omundson of Bondurant; and a brother Allan Underberg of Monona, Wisconsin. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a step-mother, Ruth and a son-in-law, Kenneth Donelson.

Marj was born on September 4, 1927 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the daughter of Edward and Velma Watson Underberg. She married Carl L. Crane on June 12, 1950 in Cedar Rapids. Marj was not only a secretary and volunteer at First Lutheran Church for many years but was a devoted member belonging to various groups there. Marj was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed and forever remembered.

Memorial donations may be given to First Lutheran Church.

Milton E. Carlson
Born in Sioux City, Iowa on November 13, 1913
Departed on October 18, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Milton E. Carlson, 96, of Cottage Grove Place, died Monday, October 18, 2010, following a brief illness. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Wednesday, 2010. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.

Survivors include: a daughter, Cynthia and husband James Good of Gig Harbor, WA; two sons, Douglas Carlson and wife Lynn of Seneca, SC, and Richard Carlson and wife Jennie of Edina, MN; four granddaughters, Kathryn and husband, Chris Sikes of Williamsburg, VA, Elizabeth and husband Josh Palmer of Easton, PA, Amanda and husband Jayson Buechler of Sammamish, WA, and Stephanie Carlson of Edina, MN; three great-granddaughters, twins Olivia and Isabel Cobian of Easton, PA, and Laine Buecheler of Sammamish, WA; a great-grandson, Maxim Palmer of Easton, PA; and two nephews, James Lobb, CA, and Robert Carlson of Sioux City, IA.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Billee who died March 2, 2003, his parents, Robert and Ellen Carlson, a brother, Arnold Carlson, sisters, Vera Marshall, Ivah Allen and his twin sister, Mildred Lobb, and nephews Lyle and Jack Carlson and Herb and Ralph Marshall.

Milton was born November 13, 1913 in Sioux City, Iowa and married Wilma “Billee” Loraine Douglass in Muscatine, Iowa on March 14, 1943. He was the youngest of five children born to Robert and Ellen Dahlsted Carlson, who had emigrated from Sweden. His family lived on a small farm near Elk Point, South Dakota, where he attended his first three grades in a one room school house. After the family moved to Sioux City, he completed schooling and graduated from Central High School. He enrolled at Iowa State College (now University) and joined Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. He graduated with a degree in General Engineering in 1936, but finding employment in engineering during the Depression was discouraging. Milt found work with a hardware store in Perry, Iowa in 1937, but soon moved to Toledo, Iowa, where he accepted a job in the branch office of Iowa Electric Light and Power Company.

In 1939 Milt began employment with the Stanley Engineering Company in Muscatine, Iowa. During WWII he worked on special war related projects, including a new air base in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned to the Enlisted Reserve Corps with the U.S. Army Signal Corps program at the University of Chicago. Following his service, he returned to the Stanley Engineering Company and also obtained his State License as a Professional Electrical Engineer from the Iowa State Board of Engineering Examiners in Des Moines.

In 1948, Milt accepted a position with the Cedar Rapids home office of Iowa Electric Light and Power Company (now Alliant Energy), where he went on to serve in various capacities, including that of Chief Rate Engineer, Commercial Manager of the Cedar Rapids District and Manager of Contract Services. He represented the company in its relations with Municipal Utilities, Gas Pipeline Companies and the Federal Power Commission, where he frequently appeared on behalf of the company at hearings in Washington, D.C. He retired in 1982 after 34 years of service.

Milt took an active part in the work of his profession. He was a Past President of the Cedar Rapids Engineer’s Club. He served as President of the Iowa Engineering Society in 1961 and 1962 and received the Anson Marston Award in 1974 for outstanding service to the Society. He was a life member of the National Society of Professional Engineers.

Milt was actively involved in community affairs most of his life. As member of the Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce, he served on the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee. He worked with Junior Achievement and also served on the Board of Directors. He was an active member of the Tuesday Noon Optimist Club for many years and was a Past President. He was a past member of Elmcrest Country Club.

Milt enjoyed giving of his time and abilities throughout his life. He was an Eagle Scout and led a Boy Scout troop after college. For a number of years after retirement he enjoyed working as a volunteer preparing income tax returns for elderly and low income families. Into his nineties he helped youth with their homework at the Boys and Girls Club and also volunteered with the Big Brothers Big Sisters Organization in the Lunch Buddy Program. More recently he volunteered to assist a class at Kirkwood Community College by meeting regularly with two students for a class project centered on interviews with a senior citizen.

Milt was an active member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church for over 60 years, serving on numerous boards and commissions. Throughout these years he was a member of the Family Fellowship Sunday School Class and actively participated in the religious and special programs of the Class.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, St. Luke’s Hospital or to a charity of choice.

Emma Krob Castle
Born in Solon, Iowa on March 9, 1915
Departed on October 9, 2010. Resided in Jefferson City, Missouri.

Emma Krob Castle, 95, of Jefferson City, Missouri, formerly of Marion died Saturday October 9, 2010 in New York City after a long illness following a stroke. Funeral Mass: 10:00 AM on Thursday at St. Matthew Catholic Church. Rev. David Beckman will officiate. Burial will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Wednesday where there will be a vigil service at 6:30 PM.

Survivors include her son, John K. Castle and his wife, Marianne of Palm Beach, Florida and New York City; five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and a son-in-Law, Dr. Lyle Hedges of Jefferson City, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Maryanne Castle Hedges, and two sisters, Henrietta Schlueter and Helen Nalley.

Mrs. Castle was born on March 9, 1915 in Solon, Iowa the daughter of Joseph and Anna Brock Krob. She was a very gifted pianist who enjoyed playing for her family and friends. Mrs. Castle was a devoted Catholic all of her life and carried that devotion to the love and care given to her family. She will be truly missed.

Memorial donations may be given to the Mary Manning Walsh Home, Attn. Sister Sean William O’Brien, 1339 York Ave. New York, NY. 10021.

Harold D. Cope
Born in Paullina, Iowa on June 13, 1927
Departed on September 25, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Harold D. Cope, 83, of Cedar Rapids, died at St. Luke’s Hospital, Saturday, September 25, 2010. Services: 11 a.m. Friday at Oakland Church of the Nazarene by the Rev. Dave King. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Thursday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. and after 10 a.m. Friday at the church. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.

Survivors include his children, Larry (Pam) Cope of Marion, Linda (Gene) Parks of Palo, and Cindy (Michael) Terry of Cedar Rapids; nine grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and his sister, Mary Slife of Center Point. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Joyce; a daughter, Judy Tatro; a brother, Walter Cope; and grandson, Aaron Terry.

Harold was born June 13, 1927 in Paullina to Byron and Sarah Cope. He married Joyce Nelson on January 14, 1948 in Cedar Rapids. She died in 1995. He was a flooring installer for over forty years. He then worked for the Abbe Center for fifteen years. Harold was an Army veteran of WWII. He was a member of the Oakland Church of the Nazarene.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.

Marjorie Cohn-Fifield

Marjorie Cohn-Fifield, 85, of Marion, IA, formerly of Toddville, died Thursday, September 23, 2010 at Willow Gardens Care Center, Marion after a brief illness.

Graveside Service: 1:30 pm, Monday, September 27, 2010 at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Mark Halverson officiating. Friends may call from 2-4 pm Sunday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.

Survivors include her children, Larry Cohn (Pam) of Springville, Roland Massow (Sylvia) of Robins, and Susan Godley of Las Vegas, NV; Sister, Joan Foster (Clifford) of Mesa, AZ; Also surviving are 7 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Clyde Cohn and Raymond Fifield.

Marjorie Charlene Hamilton was born May 24, 1925 in Iowa Falls, IA the daughter of Charles and Emma (Tjarks) Hamilton. Marj “Big Red” worked as a cook in the Marion School District for 30 years. She will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew her.

Mary June Cullen
Born in Ottumwa, IA on September 6, 1925
Departed on November 22, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

June Cullen, 85, a resident of the Meth-Wick community, died November 22, 2010, following a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM, Saturday, November 27, 2010 at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Friday, November 26, 2010 at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

Surviving are her daughters Deborah Spaith and husband Donald of Madison, WI, Vicki Clendenen and husband Dave of Cedar Rapids, Lynn Swehla and husband Gaylon of Solon, and Robin Ryan and husband Dana of Anamosa; grandchildren, Donnie Spaith and wife Brooke of Madison, WI, Rick Clendenen and wife Melanie of Cedar Rapids, Tiffany Stull and husband Jeff of Lisbon, Kelli Swehla of Hiawatha, Ashley Swehla and significant other Andy Sweeney of Hiawatha, Cory Okken and wife Jill of Atkins, Dusty Okken of Cedar Rapids, and Carly Okken and fiancée Pete Taylor of Cedar Rapids; great grandchildren, Ashley, Tyler, Trey, Cody, Shannon, Zack, Austin, Caden, and Gracie.

She was preceded in death by her husband Richard, her parents, and her siblings Paul Collett, Edyth McCall, and Lee Shoemaker.

Mary June Cullen was born September 6, 1925 in Ottumwa the daughter of Ray and Jennie (Potts) Collett. During WWII she worked in San Francisco, CA as a ship welder to support the war effort. She met Richard R. Cullen who was in the Navy and they were later married on May 7, 1948 in Hurnando, MS. She spent her time as a Navy wife and caring for her family. She was an avid fan of Iowa Hawkeye Football and Basketball, as well as a die hard fan of the Green Bay Packers. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, and time spent with family. She especially enjoyed time she was able to spend with her daughters, whom she called her best friends. She will be forever remembered for her humor and love.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the staffs of the Meth-Wick Community and Hospice Compassus for their kind and compassionate care.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
