WATERLOO -- Lola M. Powell, 85, of Phoenix, formerly of Waterloo, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at Paradise Valley Hospital, Phoenix, of natural causes.
She was born March 6, 1915, in Floyd County, daughter of William and Mary Peddicord Crosby. She married Floyd D. Powell on May 13, 1934, in Shell Rock. He died Jan. 2, 1990.
Survived by: a son, Bill D. of Waterloo; a daughter, Shirley M. Bohnsack of Phoenix; and 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: two sons, Keith and Larry; and two sisters, Gladis Ucker and Mrs. George Keifer.
Family graveside memorial services: will be later in Riverside Cemetery, Shell Rock. There will be no visitation. Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel-downtown is in charge of arrangements.
CEDAR FALLS -- Martha I. Brown, 87, of 2724 Bicentennial Drive, Apt. 302, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at home of natural causes.
She was born Feb. 22, 1913, in Oelwein, daughter of Lawrence and Julia Gulsvig Bulger. She married Wilbert Brown on May 1, 1937, in Oelwein. They later divorced.
Mrs. Brown worked at Rath Packing Co. for 25 years, retiring in 1975.
Survived by: two daughters, Linda Kelley of Cedar Falls and Jan Stark of New Hope, Minn.; and four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: a sister, Mary McSweeney; and an infant brother, James Bulger.
Services: 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, Waterloo, where there will be a 5 p.m. Senior Citizen's rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also for an hour before services Friday at the church.

WATERLOO -- Maebelle Gillett, 89, of Winter Haven, Fla., formerly of Waterloo and Manchester, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, at Winter Haven Hospital of natural causes.
She was born Aug. 11, 1910, daughter of Richard and Verna Graham. She married Ronald Burright. They later divorced. She married Lockwood Gillett on Feb. 1, 1966, in Moline, Ill. He died Sept. 13, 1989.
Survived by: a daughter, Sandy Burke of Winter Haven; a stepdaughter, Fonda Federspiel of Waterloo; a stepson, Merle Gillett of Denver; and four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside memorial services: 1:30 p.m. Friday at Garden of Memories.
DUNKERTON -- Bernard L. Johnson, 61, of Arlington, Va., formerly of Dunkerton, died Nov. 19, 1999, in Richmond, Ind., from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
He was born May 31, 1938, in Chariton, son of Harold R. and Erma Mason Johnson. He married Marian Spies on Aug. 13, 1961, in Dunkerton.
Mr. Johnson earned business and law degrees from the University of Iowa and an MBA degree from the University of Michigan. He was a certified public accountant with Price Waterhouse Cooper since 1966 and became a partner in 1974. From 1984 to 1993 he was head of International Tax Services in the Great Lakes region and from 1993 to 1995 in the southeast region. In 1995 he was named head of the Foreign Tax Group. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
Survived by: his wife; a son, Brian of Carmel, Ind.; a daughter, Julie Harris of Glen Ellyn, Ill.; three grandchildren; and his mother of Bella Vista, Ark.
Memorial services: 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Dunkerton, with burial in Dunkerton Cemetery. Locke Funeral Home, Waterloo, is in charge of local arrangements.
CEDAR FALLS -- Lavina E. Baderschneider, 93, of the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home, formerly of 807 Ellen St., died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at Sartori Memorial Hospital of natural causes.
She was born Dec. 7, 1906, near Klinger, daughter of Carl and Kate Neumann Matthias. She married Theo. "Ted" Baderschneider on June 27, 1929, in Klinger. He died Oct. 2, 1974.
Mrs. Baderschneider and her husband worked at the Klinger General Store for 10 years, then bought a store in New Hartford, which they operated for 11 years.
Survived by: a son, the Rev. Victor Baderschneider of Mahomet, Ill.; two daughters, Wera B. Gahre of Fontana, Calif., and Edith B. Liesener of Silver Springs, Md.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Vernon Matthias of Readlyn.
Preceded in death by: three brothers, Fred, Ora and Clarence Matthias.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John Lutheran Church, with burial in Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, and for an hour before services Saturday at the church.

CEDAR FALLS -- Hilda L. Bromley, 95, of the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at Sartori Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born March 8, 1905, in Sumner, daughter of Henry and Minnie Behrens Schwerin. She married Vern "Sandy" Bromley on Oct. 15, 1938. He died in December 1984.
Survived by: a sister, Elsie Sullivan of Victor.
Preceded in death by: three sisters, Alma Thode, Lucille Conrad and Hulda Schwerin; and five brothers, Ted, Henry, Raymond, Rhinehart and Herb Schwerin.
Memorial services: 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Cedar Falls Lutheran Home chapel, with inurnment in Garden of Memories. There will be no visitation, her body was cremated. Garden View Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

WATERLOO -- James E. Schmitt, 71, formerly of Waterloo, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at a nursing home in San Diego of natural causes.
He was born in Waterloo, son of Ralph and Dolorosa Saux Schmitt. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was employed as a teacher.
Survived by: two sisters, Mary Edwards of Harrison, Ark., and Donna Maringer of San Diego; and a brother, Richard of Waterloo.
Preceded in death by: a sister, Betty Murray.
Services: 10 a.m. Monday in LaJolla, Calif., with burial in San Diego. Pacific Beach Mortuary, San Diego, is in charge of arrangements.
WATERLOO -- Robert A. Stewart, 80, of Pagosa Springs, Colo., formerly of Waterloo, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, in Albuquerque, N.M., of natural causes.
He was born Oct. 5, 1920, in Waterloo, son of Arthur H. and Barbara Rose Tiggeman Stewart. He served for 24 years in the U.S. Air Force, retiring as lieutenant colonel. He was a German prisoner of war during World War II.
Survived by: his wife, Jane; two sons, David of Huber Heights, Ohio, and Steven of Newport, R.I.; a daughter, Barbara Lynn Collier of Troy, Ohio; six grandchildren; and four sisters, LaRainne Jones of Fowlerville, Mich., Dorothy Timmerman of Kingman, Ariz., Charlotte Ohrt of Denver, Colo., and Darlene Allen Page of Waterloo.
Preceded in death by: a son, Michael; and a sister, Barbara Anne Waddell.
Burial: will be in Santa Fe National Cemetery, Santa Fe, N.M. His body was cremated.

HUDSON -- Arlus Annette Steimel, 69, of 11443 Ansborough Ave., died Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, of cancer.
She was born March 23, 1931, in Waterloo, daughter of Dean Ellsworth and Regilda Marie Hayes Moyer. She married Lewis Alfred Steimel on June 15, 1949, in Waterloo. He died Feb. 22, 1989.
Mrs. Steimel owned and operated several gifts shops in the metro area, most recently The Generation Store.
Survived by: three sons, Joseph D. and James C., both of Eagle Center, and Jon L. of Reinbeck; a daughter, Janet O'Neil of Cedar Falls; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: a great-grandson; two brothers, James and Douglas Moyer; and a sister, Sonya Sammons.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Eagle Center, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, Waterloo, with a 4 p.m. senior citizens rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also for an hour before services Thursday at the church.

WATERLOO -- Evelyn Gladys Berry, 91, of Oconto Falls, Wis., formerly of Waterloo, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at St. Vincent Hospital, Green Bay, Wis., of natural causes.
She was born Jan. 1, 1909, in Arrowsmith, Ill., daughter of Marshall P. and Sarah Ethel Maurice Reynolds. She married John Everett Berry on June 6, 1947, in Nashua. He died June 7, 1989.
Mrs. Berry was employed as a nurses' aide at Community Memorial Hospital, Oconto Falls, retiring in the early 1970s.
Survived by: two sons, Roger of Spring, Texas, and Ralph of Houston; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: four brothers; and two sisters.
