WATERLOO -- James Fowler Howrey, 70, of Kiawah Island, S.C., formerly of Waterloo, died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C., after an extended illness.
He was born Sept. 19, 1930, in Waterloo, son of Julia Fowler and Benjamin G. Howrey. He married Ellen Kaupke Nov. 14, 1959, and they were later divorced.
A U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, Mr. Howrey worked for the Waterloo Paper Co. before moving to Cedar Rapids, where he was employed at Cedar Rapids Galvanizing Co. and later became owner. He also farmed and operated Howrey Transportation, and in 1985 moved to Upperville, Va., where he served as a business manager for 11 years, retiring in 1996.
Survived by: two daughters, Elizabeth Lederer of Cedar Rapids and Melissa Holman of Madison, Wis.; five grandchildren; and his former wife, Ellen Howrey of Cedar Rapids.
Services: 11 a.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, Cedar Rapids, with private burial in Waterloo. Friends may call from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

HAWKEYE -- Eula I. Heth, 88, of Hawkeye, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at Oelwein Healthcare Center, Oelwein, of natural causes; survivors include two sons, Harold of Cedar Rapids and Carl of Rolla, Mo.; a daughter, Helen Westphal of Owatonna, Minn.; and seven grandchildren; she was preceded in death by her husband, Esra; a sister, Elisabeth Gamm; and two brothers, George and Arthur Kraft; services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hawkeye, with burial in Hawkeye Cemetery; friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home, Hawkeye.
Dorothy K. Livingston, 91, of the Western Home in Cedar Falls, died on December 4th, 2000 of pneumonia. She was born July 7, 1909, in McPherson, Kansas, to Charles W. Kline and Florence E. Upshaw Kline. Dorothy graduated from East Waterloo High School in 1926 at the age of sixteen and from the University of Iowa in 1930 with a degree in English. She was a member of Gamma Phi Beta social sorority and Phi Beta Kappa. She taught one year in Belle Plaine and then moved to Fairfield, Iowa, to continue teaching until her marriage to Joseph Norvell. They had one daughter, Nancy. They later divorced and Dorothy stayed in Fairfield where she owned and operated the Book Nook, a book store and gift shop.
On January 25, 1947, Dorothy married Aden B. "Bite" Livingston. They returned to Bite's hometown of Cedar Falls, Iowa, where their daughter, Catherine was born. In 1950, they moved to Hampton, Iowa, where Bite ran the local airport and the Western Auto Store. Their daughter Susan was born there in 1951. They returned to Cedar Falls and Bite owned and operated Livingston Skelgas Service in Waterloo. In addition to raising her children, Dorothy was an active volunteer in the Sartori Hospital Gift Shop, a member of DAR, and a Girl Scout Leader for her daughter's Brownie Troop. She was an accomplished pianist and a voracious reader and passed her love of music and literature to her three daughters.
She is survived by her daughters: Nancy Norvell Ball, Evanston, Illinois; Catherine Ann Livingston, Cedar Falls; and Susan Livingston Barre, El Dorado Hills, California. Grandchildren, Jennifer Marie Ball, Carbondale, Colorado, Christopher Ball, Denver, Colorado, Benjamin Ball, Los Angeles, California, Melissa Susan Barre and Travis Livingston Barre, El Dorado Hills, California. Great-grandchildren, Abigail Marie Reilly and Hayden Reilly, Carbondale, Colorado.
There will be a memorial service at the Western Home Chapel on Thursday, December 7 at 2:00 p.m. A celebration of Dorothy Kline Livingston's life is being planned for July of 2001.

Ernest Oltman of Waterloo
Ernest Oltman, 85, of Waterloo, formerly of Dike, passed away on Monday, August 14, 2000, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa of natural causes. He attained the age of 85 years, 10 months and 13 days.
Ernest was born October 1, 1914, in Allison, Iowa, the son of Dick and Alice "Swygman" Oltman. Ernest attended country school in Butler County until the eighth grade. He joined the Army Air Corps in July 1942 and served until December 1945. He was united in marriage to Ada Goldthorpe on November 12, 1945 in Ashton – Under – Lyne Lancashire, England. Ada passed away in 1985. Ernie farmed for 35 years and retired from farming in 1976. He also ran a custom corn shelter for 10 years and did carpentry work. Ernie worked for the University of Northern Iowa as a custodian for 12 years. On April 30,1988, Ernest married Mary Duncan in Waterloo, Iowa. Ernie was a member of the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church in rural Holland, where he served as an Elder, Deacon, Usher, and was handy with church repairs. He was a member of the Dike American Legion Post No. 471.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ada in 1985; a son, Gerald Oltman in 1978; three brothers, Dick Oltman Jr., Reiner Oltman, and John Oltman; two brothers-in-law, Sam Dreeseman and Henry Druvenga; a sister-in-law, Anna Mae Oltman.
Survivors include his wife Mary of Waterloo; two daughters, Anne and her husband Larry Lampe, and Lois Marienau of Cedar Falls, Iowa; two sons: John and his wife Karen Oltman of Cedar Falls, Iowa and James Oltman of Minneapolis, Minnesota; a stepson: Gary and his wife Lucy Duncan of Waterloo, Iowa; and a step daughter, Linda and her husband Sam Ginn of West Des Moines, Iowa; six grandchildren, Terry Lampe, Brenda Chase, Sheryl Stockdale, Jennifer Oltman, Dan Oltman, and Kevin Oltman; six stepgrandchildren, Heather Ginn, Elizabeth Ginn, Logan Ginn, Mason Ginn, Julia Duncan, and Dayton Duncan: four great-grandchildren, Joshua Chase, Zachary Chase, Christopher Stockdale, and Allie Stockdale; a brother, Ben and his wife Hilda Oltman of Parkersburg, Iowa; four sisters, Helen Druvenga of Parkersburg, Iowa, Trena Dreeseman of Dike, Iowa, Fannie Bruns and her husband William of Dike, Iowa, and Jadean and her husband Jim Tripp of Reinbeck, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Frances Oltman of Stout, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 130 p.m. Thursday, August 17, 2000, at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church in rural Holland. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pastor Russell Muillenberg and Pastor Marvin Cleair of the Kimball Avenue Church will officiate. Full military rites will be conducted by the Dike American Legion Post No. 471. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at the Dike Funeral Chapel. A memorial fund has been established. The Dike Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

CEDAR FALLS -- Katherine Johanna Moser, 94, of Cedar Falls, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home of natural causes.
She was born May 30, 1906, in Bavaria, Germany, daughter of Conrad and Babette Miller Reuter. She married William F. Moser on Oct. 24, 1942, in Des Moines. He died March 25, 1951.
Mrs. Moser was a housekeeper at Drake University Dormitory, retiring in 1973.
Survived by: a daughter, Helene K. Bond of Waterloo; and two grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: three brothers and four sisters.
Family directed memorial services: 11 a.m. Saturday in the Good Shepherd's Chapel at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home, with inurnment at a later date in the Masonic Cemetery, Des Moines.

CEDAR FALLS -- Helen E. Jensen, 82, of Cedar Falls, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at the Lutheran Home of natural causes.
She was born July 11, 1918, in Reinbeck, daughter of Sophus and Marie S. Chritiansen Hermansen. She married Ernest Jensen on May 29, 1948, in Cedar Falls.
Mrs. Jensen had been employed as a secretary/bookkeeper for Takin Brothers Moving and Storage, Waterloo.
Survived by: her husband; two sons, Al of Castic, Calif., and Steve of Carlisle; three grandchildren; two sisters, Elsie Gehrke of Waterloo and Mildred Arends of Cedar Falls; and a brother, Stanley Hermansen of Dike.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Fredsville Lutheran Church, rural Cedar Falls, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Richardson Funeral Home, with family present from 4 to 6 p.m. Visitation also for an hour before services Thursday at the church.

ELK RUN HEIGHTS -- Harold R Walker, 78, of 203 Elk Run St., died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, of cancer.
He was born May 8, 1922, in Waterloo, son of George L. and Ella May Kinsel Walker. He married Virginia Retz on Nov. 27, 1943, in Waterloo.
Mr. Walker worked for 39 years at Shephard Lumber Co., retiring in 1985, then worked for three years at BPI. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survived by: his wife; a son, Bob of Waterloo; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and two brothers, William of Dover, Ark., and Lewis of Gig Harbor, Wash.
Preceded in death by: three brothers, Laurence, Everett and Charles; and a sister, Edna Billman.
Services: 1 p.m. Thursday at Locke Funeral Home, Waterloo, with burial in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by Evansdale AMVETS Post 31 and Waterloo AMVETS Post 19. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

CEDAR FALLS -- Mae Louise Kahler, 76, of Cedar Falls, died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000, at Allen Hospital, Waterloo, of natural causes.
She was born Nov. 10, 1923, in Parkersburg, daughter of Howard M. and Julia K. Atwater Bucknam. She married James F. Kahler on Feb. 7, 1948, in Maywood, Ill. He died Oct. 2, 1985.
Mrs. Kahler was past president of American Legion Auxiliary Post 237.
Survived by: a son, J. William of Cedar Falls; a daughter, Jane A. Campbell of Dike; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Edwin H. Bucknam of Cedar Falls.
Preceded in death by: a sister, Sarah McLarnan.

WATERLOO -- Dr. Fred Dick Jr., 87, of 153 Rachael St., died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, at Allen Hospital of cancer.
He was born June 24, 1913, in Huntington, Ind., son of Fred Sr. and Helen Bendel Dick. He married Thelma A. Titus on Dec. 12, 1939, in Indianapolis.
Dr. Dick received his bachelor and medical degrees from the University of Indiana and served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He was a pathologist at metro hospitals when he came to Waterloo in 1953 and became chief of pathology at Allen Hospital, retiring in 1979. He also served as chief of staff at Allen as well as director of the Allen Hospital School of Medical Technology and was past president of the Black Hawk County Medical Society.
Survived by: his wife; two daughters, Bonnie Dunham of Balltown and Patricia A. McCabe of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sons, Fred R. of Iowa City and John H. of West Branch; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Doris Kunkel of New Haven, Ind.
Preceded in death by: a brother, Jack.
