Mildred Roene Frantz, 91, of Marion, died Thursday June 24, 2010 in St. Luke’s Hospital. Services: 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Northbrook Baptist Church by the Rev. Eric Schumacher.
Entombment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be today from 6-8 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Survivors include her children, Lynn Kenneth Frantz of Cedar Rapids, Marilyn E. (David) Pafford of Waco, Texas, and Madilyn E. (David) Beaner of Marion, her sisters, Irene Rash of Dallas Center, Iowa and Ruth Allyn of Eldora, Iowa, her grandchildren, Stephanie Lynn (Adam) Hoge of Cedar Rapids, Rebecca Frantz (Ben) Youngkent of Marion, Melinda Sue (Mark) Frizzell of Chico, Texas, Melissa Ann (Tony) Pennington of Waco, Texas, her great grandchildren, Madison Elizabeth, Megan Lynn, and Meredith Anne Hoge all of Cedar Rapids and Hailey Marie Pennington of Waco, Texas and a special friend, Judy Lynn Welch of Marion.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lynnet Kenneth Frantz, a sister, Lucille Sally Boyle and grandson, Kenneth Anthony Frantz.
Mildred was born July 28, 1918 in Gifford, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Pearl March Yantis. She married
Lynnet Kenneth Frantz on September 22, 1946 in Cedar Rapids. Mildred was employed with the Cedar Rapids Credit Bureau. She was an active member at Northbrook Baptist church where she was organist and Sunday School teacher. Mildred was a devoted mother and homemaker. She loved quilting, gardening, canning her home grown vegetables and was a great cook. Mildred was proud to be the mother, grandmother and great grandmother of twins. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
A memorial fund has been established for Northbrook Baptist Church.

William C. Etscheidt, 70, of Cedar Rapids died April 21, 2006 following a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral Mass: 10 AM Tuesday at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Father Donald Klein will officiate. Friends may call Monday at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 4 to 7 PM with a vigil service starting at 6 PM. Military rites by American Legion # 298. Entombment: Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
Survivors include his loving wife of 46 years, Mary Ann; three sons Bob JoLynne Etscheidt of Iowa City, Don Angie Etscheidt of Cedar Rapids, and Bill J. Tammy Etscheidt of Newhall; sister Alice George Smith of Cedar Rapids; brothers Glenn Leatha Etscheidt of Blairstown, Richard Kim Etscheidt of Newhall; sister in laws Kathy Etscheidt of Newhall, and Norma Sykora of Arizona. Also surviving are grandchildren Brandon Etscheidt, Jonathan Etscheidt, Amber Etscheidt, and Aaron Etscheidt.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Robert, a daughter Julie, and triplet grand daughters Kate, Emily and Sara.
William Charles Etscheidt was born October 17, 1935 the beloved son of John and Elsie Brecht Etscheidt. He married
Mary Ann Delphey on August 22, 1959 in Harpers Ferry, Iowa. He was employed at Dale Lee Distributing for over 32 years. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, Marion American Legion # 298, Friend of Bill W., and a member of USS Toledo Association. He was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals and Iowa Hawkeye fan. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and will be greatly missed by all.
William donated his corneas to the Iowa Eye Bank.

Anthony "Colby" Engel, 76, of Marion, died Thursday, October 19, 2006, in St. Luke's Hospital following a short illness. Memorial services with military rites will be held at 11 AM Tuesday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Dr. William J. Pugliese of Christ Episcopal Church will officiate. Inurnment in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may register at the chapel after 10:30 AM on Tuesday. Arrangements by Cedar Memorial Funeral Home.
Survivors include his wife Loretta, two sons Rick and Stephen both of Marion, two brothers William H. Engel III and wife Madolyn, and John H. Engel and wife Carol all of Baltimore, Maryland, two granddaughters Candace Engel of Cedar Rapids, and Hannah Engel of Ridgeland, Mississippi, and a close family friend Lori Menge of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Colby was born July 31, 1930 in Baltimore, Maryland to Dr. William H. and Catherine Purdy Engel. He married
Loretta Diggs on October 31, 1959, in Hot Springs, Arkansas. He was an off set printer for Russell Guides. Colby was a member of Christ Episcopal Church. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. He loved to fish and read.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or to the Diabetes Association.

John M. Ely, Jr., of 203 23rd St. NE, died Friday, March 30, 2007, in St. Luke's Hospital from complications following surgery. Memorial Service: 4:00 P.M. Sunday, May 27, 2007, at Peoples' Unitarian-Universalist Church by the Rev. Marlene Walker. Cedar Memorial Grant Wood Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Inurnment: Oak Hill Cemetery in the Ely Family Mausoleum.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Shirley Ward "Polly" Ely, his children, John M. Ely III Connie of Anamosa, Martha Ely Goralka Joseph of Antioch, California, and Nathaniel W. Ely of Madison, Wisconsin, and two foster children, Charles M. Hudson of Iowa City, and John Thomas of Tucson, Arizona. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Elizabeth Ferring-Olson Gary, John T. Ferring Leah, Vikki Ely-Fee Kenneth, Sarah Ely-McCollum Gregory, and John Isaac Ely. There are twelve great-grandchildren.
Mr. Ely was of the fourth generation of one of Cedar Rapids' pioneer families. He was born February 17, 1919 in Cedar Rapids, the son of John Montague Ely, Sr. and Laurel Sullivan Ely. He graduated from Franklin High School, attended Coe College, the University of Iowa, and graduated from Princeton University in 1941. He married
Shirley Ward on June 20, 1942 in Worcester, Massachusetts. John served in the Merchant Marine from 1942-1945 and worked for the Quaker Oats Company in Cedar Rapids as a purchasing agent until his retirement in 1984.
John interested himself in local, national and international political and social issues. He was a lifelong civil rights activist. While serving in the Iowa State Legislature, from 1961 to 1969, he sponsored the bill to repeal the Iowa Death Penalty 1965 and co-sponsored the Fair Housing Bill of Iowa. In addition he was instrumental in establishing the Iowa Civil Rights Commission. He was an advocate for world peace, social justice, equality and diversity. He was co-leader of the Moratorium March of 1969. In later years John was a citizen-lobbyist with RESULTS, appealing to Congress for micro-enterprise, free education for primary schools in developing countries, and the Global Health Fund to fight AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. He was formerly on the board of Planned Parenthood, the Visiting Nurses Association, and was President of the Oak Hill Cemetery Board, as well as being active in the United Nations Association, the Hawkeye Chapter of the Iowa Civil Liberties Union, the Iowa Railroad Passengers Association and the YMCA. He was a member of the NAACP, the Peoples' Unitarian-Universalist Church, the Cedar Rapids Rotary, the Cedar Rapids History Center, and had previously served on the board of the Inter Religious Council of Linn County. He was a tireless and dedicated humanitarian.

Ruth "Lillian" Fahey, 90, of the Winslow House Care Centre in Marion died Tuesday Sept. 23, 2008 at the University of Iowa Hospitals after a sudden illness. Private family service will be on Friday at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5 to 7 PM on Thursday.
Survivors include two daughters, Patti Dan Boonstra of Cedar Rapids, Connie Fahey of Hiawatha, one sister, Bonnie Hoenig of Ft. Madison and a brother, Thomas Pat Gunn of Bonaparte. She is also survived by a grandson, Nathan Kate Boonstra and two great grandchildren, Samuel and Benjamin Boonstra. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Richard Charles and a brother, Donald Gunn.
Lillian was born on June 21, 1918 in Ft. Madison, the daughter of Charles and Ruth Johnson Gunn. She married
Wilfred "Bill" Fahey on March 31, 1944 in California. He died in 2003. Lillian was a homemaker. She enjoyed sewing and especially the time spent with her beloved family. Memorial donations may be given to the Iowa Donor Network in Lillian's name.

Mary L. Evans, 65, of 4923 Oakgrove Rd. NE died Monday May 7, 2007 at her home after a long illness. Memorial services at 11 AM on Friday at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of memories where friends may call after 10 AM on Friday. Cedar Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Alice Evans of Cedar Rapids and Gladys Evans of Dubuque, a son, Nelson Evans III of Cedar Rapids, her mother, Gladys Davis of Chicago, Ill., two sisters, Shirley Martin of Cedar Rapids and Mildred Hunt of Chicago, Ill., three brothers, Eugene Davis Jr. and Charles Davis both of Chicago, Ill. and Anthony Davis of Baltimore, Maryland. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Araf and Nelson Braylon Evans, Erica, Rochelle and Brittany Floyd, her former husband, Nelson Evans and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, and three sisters, Ethel Strong, Barbara McLauren and Josephine Mabry.
Mary was born on May 19, 1941 in Opelika, Alabama, the daughter of Eugene and Gladys Stenson Davis Sr. She received her master degree from Mt. Mercy College and was a social worker for the Iowa Dept. of Corrections for 10 years, retiring in 2003. Mary enjoyed gardening, travel and interior decorating. A memorial fund has been established in Mary's name.

Lois O. Gingrich Elam, 92, Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday afternoon, May 30, 2007, at Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha, following a short illness.
Lois was born April 24, 1915, at rural Mt. Auburn, Iowa. She was the daughter of Jason and Lenora Fitzsinger Gingrich. She married
Marion William Elam September 18, 1969, in Cedar Rapids.
She received her religious upbringing at the Mt. Auburn United Methodist Church where she also attended school and graduated with honors. Her mother died prematurely and consequently, Lois and her brothers were raised by their grandmother, Elizabeth Fitzsinger. She worked for many years in the Cedar Rapids area in the restaurant business and later as a successful sales person with Family Record Plan. During World War II, Lois joined the war effort by moving to California where she worked at a military base as fork lift operator, semi truck driver and then later as a chauffeur driver for military officers. Lois was an active member of the Cedar Rapids Women's Club in the 1980s, serving as president in 1985. She remained active by bowling every week in a bowling league at Lancer Lanes into her nineties. Lois loved decorating her home, growing flowers and entertaining friends and family with her tremendous meals. She was known as, and loved by many as simply "Aunt Lois".
Aunt Lois is survived by five nephews that she considered her sons. Jim wife Carol Winnebago, IL, Craig wife Deb, Cedar Falls, IA, Lynn wife Roxe Cedar Rapids, IA, Bart wife Kim Marion, IA, and Kyle wife Melissa Cedar Rapids, IA. She is also survived by 12 great nephews, 4 great nieces, 2 great, great nephews and 1 great, great niece.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and beloved grandmother; 2 brothers, Ivan and Llewellyn Sam; two sisters, in infancy, Phyllis and Claire.
Funeral services will be Monday, June 4, at 1:30 p.m. at the Mt. Auburn United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Julie McCullough officiating the service. There will be no visitation. Private inurnment in Mt. Auburn Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established.

Survivors include her husband, Ray, a daughter, Kim (Kent) Cromer of Marion, a son, Alan Smith of Hiawatha, three step-daughters, Danette Fuller of Cedar Rapids, Linda Hernandez of Thousand Oaks, California and Rita Fuller of Oregon, two sisters, Kate Howery of Cedar Rapids and Mona (Bob) Paul of Cedar Rapids. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and 4 brothers.
Marilyn was born on January 1, 1932 in Iowa City, the daughter of William and Lucille Kvach Kreutzer. She married
Ray C. Fuller on May 20, 1976 in Cedar Rapids. Marilyn worked in accounting at Rockwell-Collins and retired from there after several years of service. She was a deacon and faithful member of First Lutheran Church. She enjoyed cross-stitching, sewing, crafts and especially the time she spent with her friends and beloved family.
Memorial donations may be given to the First Lutheran Deacon Program in Marilyn’s name.
