James W. Gerlich, 85, of Cedar Rapids, died at home, Tuesday, October 26, 2010. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Monday at All Saints Catholic Church by the Rev. David O’Connor. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors. A visitation will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday and after 9:30 a.m. Monday at the church.

Survivors include his children, Kathy (Ralph) Russell of Cedar Rapids and William (Dawn) Gerlich of Marion; four granddaughters, Katie Dolter(fiancée, Nick Boyd) of Chicago, IL, Jill Dolter of Naperville, IL, and Jennifer and Kelly Gerlich of Marion; two brothers, Edward (Ruth) Gerlich of Sioux City, and Robert (Alvina) Gerlich of Hazel Green, WI; three sisters, Alice (Jim) Sauser of League City, TX, Mary Underhill of Lake Havasu City, AZ, and Carol Gassman of Maurice, LA; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 40 years, Lila, his son, James E. Gerlich and his fiancée Christine Williams, and two sisters, Velma Jones and Ruth Heying.

Jim was born November 5, 1924 in Bellevue, Iowa, the son of Julius and Eleanor Griebel Gerlich. He served his country as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps from May 1943 to June 1946. On August 17, 1949 he was united in marriage to Lila M. Pregler in Dubuque. He graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Civil Engineering. He was a licensed professional engineer in Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering. In 1953, Jim accepted a position at Howard R. Green Company in Cedar Rapids. In 1986, he retired from that company as a principal owner and 1st Vice President. Jim published several articles on municipal wastewater treatment. He is listed in the World Book of Who’s Who in Engineering.

Jim was an award winning woodcarver and was a member of the Cedar Valley Woodcarvers. He was a founding member of Mended Hearts, and an active volunteer of SCORE since 1987. Jim enjoyed spending his free time at the family cottage on the Mississippi at Bellevue. There was nothing more important to Jim than his family. He valued each and every day with them. We will all miss him dearly.

Memorials may be directed to Camp Courageous or All Saints Catholic Church.

Belle Edith Gardner
Born in Cedar Rapids on August 13, 1921
Departed on November 11, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Belle Edith Gardner, 89, died on November 11, 2010 at Heritage Nursing Home after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Services at 11 AM Thursday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Pastor Sam Dronebarger of Noelridge Park Church will officiate. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Wednesday and at the chapel after 10 AM on Thursday.

Surviving are her children, Ronald (Patricia) Gardner of Cedar Rapids, Barbara Hosford of Hiawatha, Linda (Daniel) Tyo of Springville, Marvin (Cheryl) Gardner of Des Moines; 13 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Howard of 68 years, her parents, two sisters, Dorothy Boesenberg and Trudy Hass, a brother Ted Demory; an infant sister, Lois; and a son-in-law Clayton Hosford.

Belle Gardner was born August 13, 1921 in Cedar Rapids the daughter of Earl and Gertrude (Moore) Demory. She was united in marriage to Howard Gardner on October 18, 1939. She worked for Sears as a tailor for 25 years. She enjoyed Christmas and birthdays, always making her family feel special. She also spent time making candies and loved her Shirley Temple dolls and movies; among her favorites was the traditional Christmas, red velvet cake. She was a former member of New Covenant Bible Church. Belle and Howard enjoyed their time volunteering at the Sunshine Acres Children’s Home in Mesa, AZ for 10 years. She greatly cherished her time spent with her family; they take great comfort in knowing she is with the Lord in heaven. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

The family would like to thank Heritage Nursing Home and the Mercy Hospice staff for the special care given to Belle.

Memorial donations may be made to Sunshine Acres Children’s Home, 3405 N. Higley Rd., Mesa, AZ 85215.

Linda Mae Godwin
Born in Dubuque, IA on December 26, 1945

Linda M. Godwin, 64, of Cedar Rapids / Las Vegas, Nevada, died at Mercy Medical Center, with her family at her side on Wednesday, December 15, 2010. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. at St. Matthew Catholic church by the Rev. David Beckman. Inurnment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m., where a vigil service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Ron, her children, Jeffrey (Teresa) Kapler of Plymouth, Minnesota and Chad (Whitney) Kapler of Chandler, Arizona, father, Orrin Smith of Cedar Rapids, her siblings, Colleen Hamilton of Plano, TX, Ronald Smith of Dubuque, Patricia Smith of Aliso Vijo, California, Carol Smith of Marion, Ellen Eihausen and Laurie Smith, both of Ft. Collins, CO, and Orrin Smith Jr. of Coggon; and three grandchildren, Drake, Jack and Michael Kapler, her father-in-law, Henry Godwin of Cedar Rapids, her in-laws, Dennis Godwin of Olympia Washington; Marshall Godwin, Deborah Godwin, Laurie Erlacher, Brian Godwin, Amy Godwin and Mark Godwin all of Cedar Rapids. She was preceded in death by her mother, Rita Smith.
Linda was born December 26, 1945 in Dubuque to Orrin and Rita Smith. She married Ron Godwin in Cedar Rapids on August 30, 1997. Linda worked for Square D. Company for 28 years and also was advisor to Ron in the restaurant business. She was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church and Spanish Trail Country Club, Las Vegas, Nevada.
Linda was reliable and dependable, a true giver in life often making sacrifices of her own to help others meet their own needs. She was someone who never took pity on herself in challenging times, instead rising to the occasion and leading by example.
Her children and grandchildren were her pride and joy. There was nothing she valued more than spending time with her family.
She also enjoyed seeing the world in her later years, whether in Australia witnessing the Olympics, riding a gondola in Italy, or in Vegas at Spanish Trail Country Club sipping on a Santa Margherita before a night out on the strip playing video poker.
Admired by so many, she will be greatly missed. Her strength and strong will combined with compassion and a positive outlook on life, made her a very unique and influential person who has touched the lives of so many who knew her.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Mercy Medical Center and the staff of the Intensive Care Unit for the loving care they gave to Linda.
Memorials may be directed to St. Matthew’s Building Fund or a charity of your choice in Lieu of flowers.

Patricia J. Gamsky
Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on February 23, 1927

Patricia J. Gamsky, 84, of Cedar Rapids, passed away at her home on, Thursday, March 31, 2011. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 4, 2011 at St. Matthew Catholic Church; Rev. David Beckman will officiate with burial in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home on Sunday from 4 until 8 p.m. with a vigil starting at 7:00 p.m.

Patt was born on February 23, 1927 in Minneapolis, MN, the daughter of Clifford and Florence (McNamara) Wilson. She was a graduate of the Mount Mercy Academy. Patt married Thomas Gamsky in Cedar Rapids on June 30, 1962. Thomas passed away on May 29, 2007. Patt worked for Metropolitan Farm Loan in Cedar Rapids until she married.

She was a member of the St. Matthew Catholic Church and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and her black lab, Finnegan.

Survivors include her twin daughters, Ann (Ed) Fuxa of Omaha, NE and Jan (Mike) Hessman of Cedar Rapids; 7 grandchildren, David, Frannie, Kathryn, and Kyle Fuxa, and Cara, Liz, and Kate Hessman; a sister Janann Wilson of Cedar Rapids; and several nieces and nephews.

Patt was preceded in death by husband Thomas, her parents, and two sisters Mary Lou Franey and Jerry McCarthy.

Memorials may be directed to St. Matthew Catholic School in Cedar Rapids or to JDRF - Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Criss Eugene Gladwin
Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on November 7, 1946

Criss Gladwin, 62, of Springville, passed away on Monday, October 12, 2009 at St. Luke’s Methodist Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Funeral service will be held at 9:00 AM Friday, October 16, 2009 at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. Dr. Karen Downy Beals will officiate with entombment in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 PM on Thursday, October 15, 2009 at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.

Survivors include his wife Sharon Gladwin of Springville; son Brock Gladwin of Springville, daughter Blaire Gladwin of Cedar Rapids; sister Darlene Swore of Cedar Rapids; brothers LeRoy (Judy) Swore of Cedar Rapids, Chuck (Carol) Swore of Cedar Rapids, Dennis (Susie) Gladwin of Casper, WY, and Randy Gladwin of Tampa, FL.

Criss was preceded in death by his parents Harley and Thelma Gladwin.

Criss Eugene Gladwin was born November 7, 1946 to Harley and Thelma (Volz) Gladwin in Cedar Rapids. He graduated from Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids. He married Sharon Hardy on October 2, 1982 in Winthrop, IA. Criss was an Engineer for Cedar Rapids Incorporated for 33 years before his retirement.

He was a member of the Springville Presbyterian Church, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of America – Cedar Rapids, he enjoyed golfing and fishing. He was an avid University of Iowa wrestling fan, and he had a talented gift for free hand drafting.

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.
